Once everyone was seated, one of the teachers - an elderly Nord - came and looked the audience over, as if making sure that everyone was accounted for. Satisfied, he cleared his throat and began to speak.

"Thank you all for joining, especially our two guests from the world outside. Today's lesson focuses on the various use of Restoration spells. As you all surely know... or, at least, I hope you young mages studying here all know... the most common use for Restoration magic is to heal wounds, whether they're yours or those of someone else. Indeed, healers at temples throughout Tamriel are always around to help the wounded who come in through their doors.

"Of course, that is only part of what Restoration magic could do. Today we will be going over those other functions."

The Prince listened with interest. He was aware that there were other kinds of Restoration spells, but he hadn't seen much of them. Being someone who had healing magic, he was curious to learn more about it.

Sagiri

Sagiri played with the hem of her jacket, making sure it was arranged in a way that it wouldn't twist and become uncomfortable if she tried to move around. Sagiri didn't like drawing attention to herself. She only did so whenever Oboro had ordered her to do so because they had a job to do. Sometimes, it was the best way to accomplish their goal. Most times, though, Sagiri would prefer to go unnoticed, and she knew that even the simplest of things could draw unwanted attention to her.

She was sitting stiffly, then, but she preferred that. She didn't find it uncomfortable. She was used to be stiff and cramped up. When she used to do missions as a child, she would need to be used to uncomfortable positions as she waited until it was time to complete the task that had been given to her.

Sagiri shook her head; now was not the time to be thinking of Nether Gate. She wanted to think that Nether Gate didn't exist. She knew that was a fallacy, as it very much existed - she had lived it and then it had come back when the civil war had happened. But, they had put it to rest again. Hopefully, it stayed that way this time.

They were starting to learn about Restoration magic. That was interesting to Sagiri, as she herself wasn't much of a healer, though she had some healing magic. She had to use runes for it, of course, so she was limited to what their ability was.

Sagiri tugged her notepad out, and she started taking down notes. This was information that could prove to be useful for them.

The moment Sagiri shook her head, Freyjadour glanced at her briefly. It seemed like she had been thinking about something, but he wasn't sure what it was. Sagiri was, as he had long since learned, a person who was very difficult to read. But he didn't ask, and once she had taken out her notepad, he assumed that everything was okay and went back to listening to the lecture.

"The Restoration School involves controlling life forces," the old mage continued. "That means it can be used in various ways beyond simply healing injuries. Wards, for example, allow you to prevent those injuries from happening, or at the very least minimize the harm done to you in a fight. They are, however, very draining on magicka and thus require the proper preparations in order to be efficient.

"A mage with proper training in Wards will be well protected against any spells cast against them, so it's beneficial to put some time and effort into learning how to maintain them. They are even capable of blocking the breath attacks of our world's dragons... but don't go thinking about testing this on your own. A dragon has more than just Shouts in its arsenal of deadly attacks, as its teeth and claws obviously show."

Sagiri wrote the word 'Restoration' at the top of her page as it appeared that restoration was what they were currently talking about. Again, she wasn't much of a healer though she had some healing capabilities due to runes. Learning about the sorts of healing that other people could accomplish would be something helpful. She would be able to use that knowledge either when fighting against someone with it or fighting with someone who could use it for her benefit.

She was making sure that she got every detail down, as even missing one small, minute thing could make mean she missed something glaringly important. Sagiri liked detail with her notes, because she was a detective and she just how important that detail was. It just meant she needed to know her own codes for writing if she wanted to short form anything. It was a good thing she had those. Once more, detective work.

Sagiri only glanced up momentarily, wondering if they were going to be getting demonstrations. That would be helpful in understanding them, even if she couldn't write a demonstration down.

"Now, how about we see Wards in action for ourselves?" The old mage's words made Freyjadour perk up - he was interested in seeing this protective magic and was hoping that he wouldn't have to wait until he encountered a mage defending themselves in the middle of a fight. As several students raised their hands to volunteer, the Nord picked a young Khajiit woman - with a couple of scarves wrapped around her neck for extra warmth - to come up to the front of the class. "Stand over there, and get ready to cast your spell."

The two mages stood facing each other with a few meters between them. "Remember to time your Ward, so you don't waste magicka holding it up when you don't need it. That would lead to you having less magicka to use when you do need it, and during a fight, you might not have the chance to replenish it by drinking potions." The teacher readied a spell in his hand, but his pupil didn't cast her defensive spell until he brought his hand forward, shooting a fireball her way.

The Khajiit brought up a shimmering shield of energy, and the fireball dispersed the instant it collided with the Ward.

Sagiri tried to remember if there were any runes back in Falenas that would be able to make wards in the same fashion that these mages were able to craft them. She couldn't remember. There were a lot of runes in Falenas, but she had never bothered to memorize them all. She was equipped with two that she used, one that was fairly unique that others couldn't simply buy or find. It meant she didn't care too hard about other types of runes. Maybe she should have paid more attention.

What she was paying attention to now was the demonstration before them.

Sagiri was mildly pleased that they were actually going to show the wards being performed and used, as opposed to just telling them what they were about. One could only pick up so much information from having it discussed. That was another thing that Sagiri learned from detective work. Having someone explain the scene of a crime didn't help as much as being able to see it in person where you were able to try and piece together the events in your mind.

She focused, though, on the two mages performing the demonstration. She was surprised by how many had volunteered. Clearly, wards was something that mages learned early on in their education here.

She didn't react when the fireball hit the ward, but she was impressed. She wrote down the timing she had counted with the attack and when the ward went up. The mage who was giving the class had said the timing was important.

Hmm... the Ward completely blocked the fireball. Freyjadour was impressed. That seemed like a very effective way to block a magical attack coming straight at you, although it did have its limits. The drain on magicka, as the teacher said. Although, from what the Prince could see, the Ward's protection was mostly directed in front of the mage. It probably wouldn't help much if a spell came from behind, or to the side.

It was like a physical shield, in a way. But that was only what he was getting from what he was currently seeing. Maybe he was wrong.

The two mages showed off a few more Wards - as well as spells hitting their ethereal surfaces - before it was time to move onto the next topic. The Nord did so after thanking his student and sending her back to her seat. "Now that we've covered Wards, it's time to move onto the next purpose of the Restoration School. While there are Restoration spells that heal injuries, the school also contains spells that are, in a way, the opposite of that. They affect those who are quite beyond the point of healing and may have been dead for many, many years.

"The undead can be a serious threat to anyone, but there is another way to defend oneself from them besides burning them to a crisp. Certainly, Destruction spells of the fire variety are effective, but we shouldn't ignore the usefulness of Restoration as an alternate means of defense."

Sagiri

Sagiri watched the ward making, fascinated. She wondered if they were as useful against physical weapons as they were against magic, as she knew sometimes magic required different properties for that depending on what world you were from and how the magic there worked. She also wondered if the wards were effective enough of attacks coming on other sides. They weren't full-body wards. Would it be possible for someone like Sagiri who knew how to sneak attack someone when they weren't expecting it to get around the ward?

This was probably why the students needed classes on them. It wasn't only to make sure they knew how to perform the ward itself, but how to defend against people who knew how to get around the wards as well.

But, they were moving on from wards now to other spells in the Restoration school.

Sagiri leaned forward when the teacher mentioned that you could use Restoration spells as a means of offensive too. That wasn't something that most people even thought of, and Sagiri wanted to hear what an expert had to say on the situation.

"Now, there are a couple of ways that Restoration could be used against the undead. The first is turning - provided that you're using the right spell for the particular undead you're facing, it will flee and will remain fleeing for a certain period of time. The Turn Undead spells will do this, but there are also spells that will create a protective circle. Any undead that ventures into this circle will be forced to turn away and run. Whatever spell you use, it should provide you with an opening, either to prepare an attack or to escape.

"If you do prefer an offensive edge to your Restoration, there are still spells that will burn undead, much like Destruction. However, these spells have absolutely no effect on those who still draw breath, so don't mistake the flames of Restoration with those of Destruction. Against a living opponent, it may prove to be your undoing."

The teacher then smiled, clasping his hands together. "How about a demonstration?"

"You're going to set us on fire?" asked one of the students.

"No. Well, yes, in a way - we'll test out the safety of Restoration if you young ones want to. What I mean is that we do have something viable for you to test your spells on, so you can see the effects up close."

Freyjadour glanced at Sagiri. "Does that mean what I think it means...?" That they brought something undead into the College on purpose. Provided that it was something the staff could control, then it should be relatively safe. But there were so many different kinds of undead on this planet... hopefully, they hadn't gotten their hands on something dangerous.

Sagiri

The pen in Sagiri's hands made the quietest of noises as she used to it write words in a speedy fashion. She didn't even need to look down at her notes as she wrote them, as she was so practiced in taking notes while paying attention to what was going on ahead of her. Even if she missed the lines, she was able to judge from habit how far the words should have been from each other. If they were too messy, she would simply copy them again.

Restoration magic, to her, was interesting. She never thought about how it was possible to use it against someone. She always considered it a form of healing. It was supposed to be something that one used to heal one's self or heal their allies. But, it worked as an offense against certain types of enemies, particularly the undead. Sagiri would never have thought of doing something like that.

Magic never ceased to amaze her.

"They brought something for a demonstration...?" The words Sagiri spoke were barely audible and she glanced towards the doorway. Were they going to haul something in? She didn't understand. Couldn't that place the students in danger?

She used one hand to check the kunai that were hidden in her sleeves. She wanted to make sure she could draw them loose at a moment's notice. Just to be safe.

"Now..." began the teacher as two other mages from the faculty rolled in what looked like a coffin. A really old one - the wood that it was made of looked ready to fall apart at the slightest touch. It held together anyway as it was rolled in, but even then, Freyjadour felt a twinge of unease. Some of the students murmured their concerns. "We will be using a standard draugr for our lesson. There's nothing to be worried about." The teachers removed the chains that secured the coffin and stepped back. For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the lid of the coffin popped off, there was a snarl, and out climbed the draugr, glowing eyes glaring at its new surroundings. The teachers took one look at it and were startled over what they saw. One started casting a fire spell, but the undead warrior wanted none of that. It uttered words both strange and ancient, and suddenly the mage was blasted across the room.

"By the gods... that's not a normal draugr!" exclaimed the mage who had been running the lesson. He started preparing his own spells while his students scrambled to safety. "That's a Death Overlord!" Freyjadour jumped to his feet and drew his sansetsukon just as the creature went on the rampage, chasing after the mages while swinging a sword as black as midnight.
