Carly yawned and stretched her arms, then turned to look back at the group of archeologists not too far away from her. Everyone was taking a break right now before getting back to work in a few more minutes.

Today she was documenting the group as they searched through the deeper parts of the ruined city, trying to find more evidence of the rich culture that the people who had once lived here apparently had. Things had gone pretty smoothly for her so far - she interviewed a few of the scientists and took photos and video of them at work. They found a few artifacts, including something that suggested that the moon people might've been part of some kind of space community that included other planets.

It was all interesting stuff and she was glad to be here, getting the scoop on what new discoveries were waiting to be uncovered.

After eating the sandwich that one of the expedition staff had given her, Carly used the remaining time to check up on her equipment. Cameras were good to go. Recorder's all set. Notebooks, pens and pencils all accounted for. She was ready to keep on working!

Ah, the moon! It was such a nice place to be after being stuck in Silent Hill!

Of course, it was cold and desolate, but there weren't any twitchy ghost ladies around trying to make him open empty chests and who would inevitably attack him if he probably took too long. Of course, Ronald hadn't taken too long. He was smarter than that, and he had wanted to get out of that house as quickly as possible. Once he had departed from Ammy, he had wanted to go somewhere that would be a lot less annoying to be in, though he had promised to come join her for her own key hunt, whenever that would be. He would have time to get there, at least. He knew which location she was going to be at and he would be able to make it there on time.

For now, though, he was on the moon. He had never been to the moon before, even back home. Shinigami could probably be on the moon since they didn't quite work the same way humans were supposed to work, but they had never bothered to do so. They probably hadn't had the technology for it. He never paid attention; it was too above his pay grade.

But, he had heard that there was an archeology group here and he was curious. Maybe they wouldn't mind a lone shinigami poking around.

In fact, he was sure he saw them just up ahead.

With the group just about ready to go, Carly made sure she had all the gear she needed with her. She was used to lugging this stuff around with her, so she didn't think twice about pulling the straps of various bags onto her back and shoulders. What she was more concerned about was tripping over something while she was working. Everything she had brought with her for this assignment was durable, but taking a nasty spill would still suck.

Picking up her video camera, she turned it on and made sure it was all set to go. Carly wasn't recording anything yet, but she still got a sweeping view of their surroundings, as well as the archeologists as they got ready to leave. Everything looked okay...

"Eh?" Carly's view landed on a guy approaching them. He was handsome and very well-dressed. Now, who could that be?

Ronald could see the group that was before him, and he could tell that they were packing up to leave. Well, he guessed he wasn't going to see much of their work, unless he was going to snoop and poke at the area they had been working in previously. Though he wasn't honestly sure if there was anything for him to look at.

Well, he was here now. He stepped into the area, seemingly catching their attention. Whoa, that was awkward, the way they all looked up at him at the same time.

Scientists were weird.

He noted one didn't quite match the others, and she had a bunch of bags with her. More than it looked like she would be able to carry.

"Who are you?" one asked. He didn't even seen which one had said it to him.

"I'm a shinigami," he said in reply. That caused them to freeze. ...So, was that the wrong thing to say? Probably.

Soon Carly wasn't the only one who had noticed the guy approaching them. All the people she was working with suddenly looked up and spotted him. And when one of them asked who he was, the guy responded that he was a shinigami. And they just froze and stared at him... oh, geez.

"I-I don't think he's here for any of us," Carly said, breaking the short but really awkward silence that fell upon them after the guy had answered. She lowered her camera. "I mean... he just strolled up to see what we were doing. At least that's what it looks like!"

She laughed nervously. Not only was she feeling awkward because she just drew everyone's attention to her, but because she was the most likely person to be the reason why a death god came calling! But she was pretty sure that he was just visiting the moon like everyone else. Shinigami had free time like other people, right?

This didn't exactly go the way that Ronald was expecting. He had been around so many people that didn't quite fit into the norm where he was from that he had forgotten that not everyone took the fact that a shinigami was walking around as a good thing. Some people also only saw shinigami as those guys at the Seireitei, who were kind of stuffy when dealing with outsiders.

Not that he was one of those kinds of shinigami. He was a different kind. Some might have considered him a worse kind. He didn't like to agree, but whatever.

"Yeah, listen to her," Ronald said, pointing at the woman who had stated that he was probably not here to kill them or anything like that. "I'm just here to take a look. I heard some people were around here looking at things, and I thought I just take a look."

They were still looking at him kind of skeptically. That wasn't good. He wondered if they had guns, not that guns could actually do anything to him. Maybe knock him out but that was it.

"I'm Ronald Knox," he said quickly. Introductions always smoothed things over, right?

The archeologists still looked skeptical. Carly wasn't sure why. Shinigami were people too, and they didn't always go roaming around looking for people who needed to die. She was sure that they had free time and days off from their work, just like everyone else! No need to look at him funny just because of what he did for a living.

There were people out there who had even stranger jobs.

'Think, Carly, think!' There had to be something she could say that would put everyone at ease. Right? If Ronald wanted to look around and see what they were up to, then there had to be something that would seem like a legit reason for the group to have him around. How about...?

"If he's hanging around, then we shouldn't have to worry about anything, right? Who out there would mess with a shinigami?" There were a few things that Carly could think of, but none of them would be up here on the moon, trying to attack them or steal their stuff. The security checkpoint at the entrance of the ruins probably couldn't keep all the bad people out, though. Having a bodyguard - even just a passive one - ought to put everyone's mind at ease.

Wow, humans were tough critics, weren't they? Ronald had seen their kind fuck up again and again - his people didn't start massive wars just because their king threw a temper tantrum, and they didn't even have kings because have a ruler who was able to be, more or less, all powerful like that was a foolish decision and shinigami would be succumb to such a dumb thing - and yet they were the ones who were most likely to judge someone else based on what they were. Their idiocy never ceased to amaze Ronald. You would think a group of scientists would know better.

"Yeah, listen to her," Ronald said, pointing to the woman who was clearly trying to help him out. Bless her for not being as stupid as these other guys. He didn't say it out loud, but their logic was really messed up. If they were so wary over a shinigami pulling shenanigans around them, they should be more polite. Ronald could have killed them all on the spot. He knew a few who might have just for giving them the stinkeye.

Ronald shrugged, kind of nonchalant. "But, I mean, if you want me to leave just because you're afraid, that's fine," he said. "But, I guess, unlike you, I read the paper and know that there's been a few mysterious disappearances on the moon that makes people think there's something up here eating them."

Humans only, too. Ronald guessed it had a specific diet. Reading the newspaper came in handy sometimes.

That did it. The group discussed this amongst themselves and then agreed. Carly assumed that they didn't want to get eaten out here. She didn't either, but she knew she had some good luck coming her way today. Carly had used her deck earlier today to see what her fortune was, and her cards said she should be having a good day. Her cards would never let her down!

"Great! I guess that settles it." Carly turned to Ronald again. "Glad you can come with us. I'm Carly Nagisa, and I'm documenting this expedition." If the archeologists did well here and she got enough good footage, then maybe it would air on TV! Even if it didn't, they were still going to pay her, but Carly thought just being here while all these discoveries were being made was payment in itself. She was one of the first people who would see what these guys uncovered.

Well, that seemed to have done the trick. If there was one thing humans could be counted on, it was that they were scared of being eaten. Sometimes, all one had to do was threaten someone with the possibility of them being eaten, which was exactly what he had done. Sure, they really could totally get eaten, but Ronald honestly doubt it was going to happen.

But, it was the thought that counted, so Ronald was now free to be among them. Awesome.

Ronald left the rocks he had been standing on to go over to the woman who had helped him out. Apparently, her name was Carly. He had known a Carly once. One of the other shinigami had killed her, which had been sad. She had been really pretty.

"Ronald," he said again, just in case she hadn't caught it the first time. "So, what's the scoop on what's going on around here?"

The group went back to their preparations for the rest of the day. Carly had all her gear packed up already, so she was ready for adventure! Hopefully, they didn't run into any space monsters that planned to eat them all the way out here, but she did feel reassured that Ronald was sticking around. It was enough to keep her from dwelling on it too much.

"We've uncovered a few artifacts so far," she explained. "They all suggest that a great civilization used to live here many years ago, which supports what's already been discovered so far. But it also seems like their society extended far beyond the moon - there's records about people and places on planets all throughout the solar system!"

The solar system this moon was from was pretty much like the solar system from Carly's world. The planets even have the same names. Which made her wonder... was the planet she was now living on even part of a solar system? There didn't seem to be any nearby planets...

"They also seemed to really like cats." For whatever reason. Maybe they found cats cute. That was a good enough reason as any.

Ronald was impressed that they were actually finding a lot of stuff around here. He had never been the sort of guy who was into archeology or any of its related science fields. He didn't find that sort of thing interesting enough for him to actually look into a lot. He had more important things he could be spending his time doing.

But, in this world, he thought he might as well expand his horizons, even just a little bit. There was a moon on his world, but no one had gone there. He didn't know if some ancient civilization had lived there or not. Mankind didn't know either. Were they humans? Were they aliens? Ronald didn't know.

"...Cats?" Ronald asked, surprised. "Really?" They had cats on the moon. That was... weird. He hadn't seen that coming at all.

He shook his head. Well, if the moon liked cats, who was he to judge? Cats were pretty cool.

"Is there anything cool I can see?" he asked. He would like to see something physical and substantial, rather than just hearing about everything. If he wanted a lecture, he'd go to school.

Well, it was better to see cool stuff than to just hear about it. They were going to find even more cool stuff soon, but there were a few things here that Ronald could look at if he couldn't wait. "That lady over there..." Carly said, pointing towards her, "is in charge of all the smaller artifacts and making sure they're packed up right." Because even though they looked sturdy, they were still old. They might break if they weren't careful handling them.

When the archeologist looked up and saw Carly, she waved. Carly waved back and apparently, the lady understood what they wanted before she was even told. "If you want to look at some of our findings before I stash them away, come over here!" she called over to them. They were going soon, but they still had some time.

Carly went over, switching to the camera she was taking photos with. Might as well snap a few more of their findings while she had the chance.

It was cool that they still had stuff out that Ronald was able to take a look at. He had come all this way, only to show up in time for them to start packing up. That had been, in a way, horrible timing, and he could have very well left without having learned anything. That would have been super ultra lame. He would have kicked himself in the ass over that.

But, it wasn't the case. There was still stuff for him to look at. He glanced at the archeologist that Carly had pointed out. Apparently, that lady knew some things. And, she had some things. Both of those things were way better than having nothing.

Ronald followed after Carly, shoving his hands into his pockets as he did so. He felt he looked less intimidating that way, slouching like he was. Normally, he didn't care if people found him intimidating. He thought that that would be considered a them problem, as he wasn't naturally intimidating at all, or so he thought.

"Wha'cha got?" he asked once they reached the archeologist. His voice sounded curious, and he was. He also hoped that would be helpful in getting these humans to show him stuff.

Carefully, the archeologist laid out the artifacts that she hadn't packed up yet. "We got some cutlery. Forks, knives... that sort of thing. They have really intricate designs. Here's some cat figures... careful with that one, it's almost losing its head. Something that looks like it should be a hourglass, but I'm not entirely sure. It's broken. This one, I'm sure it's a pocketwatch. And then there's these pieces... not sure what they were a part of yet, but they've got a moon design on them."

Carly snapped photos of each item, but lowered her camera as the lady put one last artifact on the table. This one was a little larger than the others - a flat panel, made of some kind of stone. Marble? Did they have marble on the moon? It was cracked down the middle, but the layer of dirt that had accumulated on the top surface over who knows how many years had been wiped off.

"What's that?" the reporter asked.

"This," replied the archeologist, "is a map of the moon. It's a pretty detailed carving... a work of art."
