It took Raichu some time to realize just how much his new Trainer valued his freedom, and why.

They sat out on the top of a rocky cliff, one of many in the central area of the Eastern Continent. Far from the village of Mr. Saturns. Far from the farm that thrived on hard work, persistence and magic. Far from the racing facility built upon a promise between friends. Wes hadn't reached this lonely place on his bike, or on the back of one of his Pokemon; instead, he reached it by riding the trapar waves that flowed freely on this planet. He had done so using the lift board that Raichu was now sitting on, a gift from one of the few humans in this world that the young man trusted with all his heart.

Flying meant freedom, in a way. It gave those willing to risk falling a chance to reach the clouds.

Sitting on the edge of the cliff, Wes was playing his harmonica, one of two instruments Raichu knew he owned. The Alolan Pokemon found the tune a little on the melancholy side, but he supposed that wasn't surprising. His Trainer had recently found an answer to something he had been so stubbornly seeking. The problem was, he wasn't sure if it was true or not. It was likely, in all honesty, a trap. And yet there was no way to know for sure unless he sprung it on purpose.

Debating this with the team, they couldn't decide what they should do. More and more things came up, including some things from the past that a few of the Pokemon would only hint at. Raichu didn't know the entirety of what they meant, but he had a guess. Before the hour was up, Wes had adjourned their meeting and went out here to get some lifting practice in.

Now out in the middle of nowhere, listening to this melody, Raichu knew that what Wes really wanted was to forget some of the things that the other Pokemon had brought up. Out here in the canyon, there were no enemies, no skeletons in anyone's closets. Just rock walls and an open sky.

When Lloyd had first been presented with his lift board, he was ecstatic. He'd seen Holland lift so many times, he really wanted to try it for himself. And, with some of his other friends in the Network learning as well, he definitely wanted to do it even more. Of course, there was the fact he needed to learn how to do it. It was clear to him that lifting wasn't something easy to do, and not many people had the feel for it that Holland did. After all, he was told Holland was the best in the world at what he did - even back in a world where more people knew how to do it. Here, he was the only expert and possessed the only bit of knowledge in how to make a lift board, which was apparently very complicated. Lloyd took a few lessons from Holland until he got a feel for it and was comfortable in being able to do it on his own without adult supervision.

Which was where he was now. Practicing how to lift on his. He'd chosen Saturn Valley for his practice zone as it was a place he was very comfortable with. And, if he did manage to fall, he was sure the Mr. Saturns were going to look after him - somehow. He didn't know how they did half the things they did do, like build their homes, but he was sure they had a way.

Right now, he was moving through the air steadily. His movements were a bit on the shaky side and he wasn't cutting through the air like a knife, but he was still riding the trapar with enough ease to keep himself from falling to the ground below. As he moved along the air, something caught his ear. It was a melody - a rather melancholic melody, but a melody all the same. And, it was a harmonica. He only knew one person who played a harmonica.

"Wes!" he called once he was able to see him. He wanted to wave but he didn't want to accidentally cause his board to go off course or to knock himself off of it. He went over to the Pokemon trainer before carefully landing his board on the grass. "What are you doing here?" he asked as he stepped off of it.

Upon hearing the voice, Raichu's ears twitched and he perked up, smiling when he spotted Lloyd. As the boy landed, the Pokemon stood up and waved. The melody died off as Wes pulled his lips from the harmonica, but he didn't speak until Lloyd had both feet on the ground.

"Just clearing my head." The Trainer needed times like this, when he could just forget about his worries for a while. A big canyon like this, where he could disappear for a moment, was the perfect place for that. It reminded him of home and nobody would have an easy time finding him. Almost - Lloyd had found him just fine, but Wes wasn't bothered with that in the least.

Rising to his feet, he turned from the edge, stuffing his harmonica into his coat pocket. Raichu hopped off his Trainer's lift board and tossed an end up to him, allowing Wes to grab it. "So you're out lifting too, huh?" Practice makes perfect. That was true for most things, lifting included. It was a challenging sport requiring skill and for one to disregard a primal fear - falling from a lethal height.

Wes was here to clear his head, which made Lloyd really hope he wasn't bothering him or anything by coming over. He knew he liked it when people came to talk to him when he was feeling down, but not everyone was like that. It could very well be a childish thought on his fault, and Wes wasn't a child any longer. He didn't think Wes would mind, though. He knew Wes pretty well these days, and Wes wasn't a temperamental adult that thought he was better than children. It was one of the reasons he liked him.

Lloyd glanced down at his lift board that he left on the ground. It was red and blue, matching the colours of his favourite superhero. He had picked them out himself and even helped Holland paint it. He was worried he would make the paint uneven, but it turned out okay. He wondered if Holland fixed any of his mistakes that he hadn't noticed when he had gone to sleep that night. He wouldn't put it past Holland to do that; it was such a dad thing to do.

"Yeah, Holland's been teaching me," he said, looking back at Wes. "He says I'm good enough now to practice on my own, so that's what I've been doing!" He sounded rather proud of it. Jack was also showing him how to duel, too. He was learning a lot these days, and he was pretty proud he was picking them up. Lloyd wasn't good at a lot of things besides science, but he was glad that he was good at things his friends took interest in.

"And that's what brought you all the way out here." Made sense. There wasn't much else out here besides wilderness. Maybe there were some wild Pokemon - they seemed to live nearly everywhere that people weren't, as long as it wasn't too dangerous for them. Unlike a lot of other Trainers, Wes didn't have too much interest in seeking out wild Pokemon to catch, but it was nice to know that they're thriving on this planet.

"I was planning to get some more practice in sometime today. Right, Raichu?" The Pokemon nodded and floated up on his tail, hovering in the space between the two humans. "Feel like practicing together?" It was far too nice of a day to just spend sitting on a cliff. Wes had been feeling better since he had flown out here; his mood was definitely lighter than it had been while he was discussing plans with his team.

It probably helped that they were out in the middle of nowhere. Wes had always preferred the general quiet of the wilderness over the noise of a bustling city. Might be because he grew up out in a desert canyon far from civilization. To him, it just seemed nicer without a bunch of people or buildings.

Wes wanted to practice with Lloyd? That would be great! If he and Raichu were already here practicing together, then it wasn't like Lloyd was derailing their plans or anything. As much as he knew it shouldn't bother him, sometimes it still did whenever they switched up what they were doing to help him out with something he was trying to do. They shouldn't have to stop whatever it was they were doing just for him. Sometimes, he also forgot he was only eleven years old, and it was perfectly in the nature of the adults he spent time with to want to help him out.

He needed to remember he was just a kid, but he also wasn't a burden. He was used to his parents treating him like that, even as much as he believed they loved him. They still weren't always the best of parents. He thought they could be taught some parenting skills from the adults he lived with. Each time he thought that, he instantly felt bad.

He missed his mom and dad, despite it all.

"Let's do that," he said, his voice sounding his excited. "We can help each other out!" He was sure Wes started learning before him. Maybe he could offer some helpful tips to help Lloyd learn better! He was always on the lookout for the best method to learn!

Wes had to smile at just how excited Lloyd sounded. Sometimes, it was easy to forget that some of the kids living on the Axolotl were just that - kids. Wherever they were from, they had ended up dealing with a bunch of shit that kids their age shouldn't have. So it was kind of nice to see them acting like the kids they were.

And he liked helping them and making sure that, while they were stranded on this planet, they had better lives than he had at their age.

"Then we're going to have to get back into the air," Wes remarked, carrying his board away from the edge of the cliff. If they were going to be watching for each other's quirks and flaws, they would actually have to be lifting first. Right now, he was planning to take a running jump off the cliff, something he had gotten the hang of not too long ago. It did take him some time to figure out how fast to run and what distance, and it was worth the effort to be able to get back into the air that way, especially in places such as this.

Once he was far enough away, Wes sprinted for the edge, jumping right at the end. Before gravity took hold, he moved his board underneath him, landing both feet flat on its surface. Since he didn't have Holland's sense for trapar, he had to feel how it pushed up against the bottom of the board in order to determine how to adjust his balance. Wes made sure he was steady before he ascended back over the tops of the cliffs.

Raichu applauded, but he didn't follow him. Instead, he waited for Lloyd to take off. Ever since learning that humans could fly like he could, he had taken a special interest in lifting. And like a lot of things, there were some aspects of it that he assumed varied with the individual.

Lloyd stepped out of the way once Wes looked like he was going to take off. He was surprised to see that Wes simply ran and jumped off the edge of the cliff they stood on - he wished he could do that! - but he also knew Wes had been lifting longer than he had. Holland did stuff like that all the time, but he was an expert in lifting and probably been freefalling since he was Lloyd's age. Wes even could ride flying Pokemon, so being up in the air was different from him too. Lloyd didn't have that sense, not yet. He needed to work his way up there.

So, he was going to get off the ground a simpler way.

Lloyd placed his lift board down on the ground, and he stepped on it. It might have looked silly but he shuffled his board with his feet until he could feel it catch the trapar waves that were coming off the ground. They caught the back of the board first but eventually they went through the whole thing. And, then Lloyd was lifting.

He moved slowly over to Wes before stopping next to him, a big grin on his face. It was a silly way to get into the air, but he was in the air and that was what was important.

Raichu watched as Lloyd shuffled in order to get his board to catch trapar. That was an interesting way to get going. Admittedly, he had only really seen Holland and Wes lift before today. Holland was an expert and was able to get into the air in mere moments, while Wes preferred running take-offs, whether they were from a cliff or not.

Once the kid was in the air, the Pokemon followed, flying after Lloyd with the greatest of ease.

Wes waited for Lloyd to reach him, grinning when he did. Not bad. How one got into the air wasn't that important. It worked, right? "Let's go," was all he said before starting a flight through the canyon. Right now, he wasn't going fast, so he could make sure that Lloyd was able to keep up.

As usual, he didn't worry about falling, or even Lloyd falling. Raichu was here with them; his quick reflexes and psychic abilities meant he would catch them long before they had a chance to hit the ground. Wes would even move to catch Lloyd in case his Pokemon somehow wasn't able to.

Lloyd felt comfortable on the lift board right now. He was taking his time when he got to Wes, and he didn't feel nervous about falling off. Not once. He knew it was partially because he wasn't doing any fancy tricks. He'd seen Holland do flips in the air as easily as if he was walking. He never once fell off the board, not unless he meant to. Sometimes, Holland seemed to like to freefall before putting his board back under his feet. Lloyd didn't think he would ever get to that point, but he sure did like moving along at the comfortable pace he was going.

"Right behind you," he said as he followed after Wes. He glanced around as he moved, though he was still focused on making sure he didn't fall. Trapar waves could be tricky ones. If he wasn't careful, his lift board might have lost its hold on them and plummeted to the ground below. He wasn't going to do that as long as he was careful.

Even if the view was super distracting at times! It was so pretty up here!

"Can Raichu normally do that?" Lloyd asked, curiously. He didn't get to see all of the Pokemon all the time and he was still learning about them. He remembered hearing about Raichu, but he never heard of them doing that before, even though he knew Wes' Raichu looked different than others.

Wes enjoyed being up in the air. It was one of the reasons why he flew on Flygon so often, but lifting was still a different experience. He wasn't relying on his dragon, but his own skill. There was something pretty encouraging about being able to do something that a lot of Trainers couldn't without their Pokemon. And this area they were in was absolutely beautiful.

It was kind of like certain areas of Orre. As harsh as the region could be at times, one could always head out to see scenery like this, if they were prepared for the sun, sand and heat. It was one of the things that made living there worthwhile.

"Most of them can't." Raichu was surfing right alongside them, being careful not to come in contact with the trapar that trailed from underneath their boards. "This Alolan Raichu's part-Psychic-type, and he's able to use his power to float like that." This surfing ability also allowed them to do a few other things, too. Right now, though, Raichu was just using it to match their lifting, which was something he really liked doing. The Pokemon was smiling as if he had been given an entire stack of pancakes to eat.

Oh, this Raichu was a special variant of Raichu then. Lloyd thought he could remember hearing Black mention something like that, but he had been half-asleep at the time and probably had to be carried to bed by the older boy. Black was always able to stay up later, probably due to the fact he had willingly left home at young age and was able to make his own schedule. Lloyd's sleepiness still seemed to kick in right around the time his mother always wanted him to head off to bed.

But, it was pretty cool that something like variants were a thing in Pokemon. They were a thing in regular animal species, but Lloyd never thought about applying the logic to Pokemon before. Knowing it was made him want to see more of them. He wondered just how many differences there were.

"That's really awesome," Lloyd said, looking at Raichu. He looked so happy too. Lloyd thought he was a very cute Pokemon. He looked absolutely cuddly too. Lloyd wondered if maybe he could try giving him a hug sometime; hopefully the Pokemon wouldn't mind.

"Do you have a destination in mind?" Lloyd asked Wes. They were clearly going to stay in Saturn Valley, but it was important with trapar to try and figure out if there was somewhere they wanted to land, even if just to take off again. Trapar wasn't something one could count on to be constant. That was one of the things Holland told him.

A destination, huh? Right now, they were pretty far from any real landmarks. Wes had ventured deep into the area on purpose, although he hadn't thought of where he was going to go once he was this far out. But he did know the layout - all its high cliffs and deep valleys - by heart. Memorizing landscapes like this was something he had been doing since he was young. All he needed for the Saturn Valley area was a few trips out with Flygon.

Wes did have a map of the area on his P*DA, but he felt that it was sometimes better to travel to a place without having to rely on data all the time.

Raichu said something to him then. Wes didn't understand the actual words, but he knew his friend well enough by now to get the feel of what he was saying. Trainers learned to understand their Pokemon that way. "That place? Yeah, that'll work." There was a place hidden deep in this area that Lloyd would probably like. Anyone who was just exploring from the ground would never even know it was there, let alone be able to get to it.

"Follow me." Wes adjusted his balance and then turned, gliding around a wide rock wall. As long as the trapar went their way, they should get there easily.

Lloyd could feel a little wave in the trapar below him, which caused him to wobble but he kept going anyways. It was like hitting a rock while you were on a skateboard or a bicycle. If you weren't careful, you might have tipped yourself right over or simply fallen off whatever it was you were riding. But, if you knew what you were doing, you could get past it just fine. That was what Lloyd did - ride through it.

It also sounded like Wes knew some place they were able to land and take a break before testing the trapar and taking off again.

"Okay, lead the way," he said, following after Wes. It was easy to ride the trapar wave behind Wes, as it was visible from streaming behind the lift board. Lloyd merely caught onto whatever was trailing behind him, making it easier for him to keep balanced.

It was quite nice up here, but Lloyd really wondered where Wes was taking them. He had called it that place, and that made Lloyd really curious. He knew there was tons of places around the Valley he hadn't had the chance to see yet.

Raichu flew alongside his friends. While he knew exactly where Wes was leading them, he didn't go ahead of them. He preferred sticking close, ready to catch either of them if they fell. Wes was trying to make sure he wouldn't have to. Every bump and ripple in the trapar, he rode out, making subtle adjustments to his stance to ensure that he remained balanced.

"Be careful," he called back to LLoyd as they entered a narrow space between two cliffs. There was about two feet of space on either side of them, which gave them a little space to maneuver, but it was still a tricky spot to fix their mistakes should they make them. Eventually, the space opened up a little more, and Wes turned towards what looked like a cavern entrance with a ledge in front of it.

The opening was high up so it could only be flown to; the rockier surfaces under it kept it hidden from anyone who might be below it.

Wes landed on the ledge, then he quickly picked up his board and got out of Lloyd's way.
