"No kidding." Control the power, and you control the building. Kaitou Kid often took advantage of that, switching the power off in the room that his prize was being kept in. The more complex the controls were, the more he took advantage of them. Security cameras would either switch off or show something to fool the police. Doors would open and close at his behest. Unique features of the building became unique traps.

Kaito was so tempted to go fiddling around with that fusebox right now.

"See anything else that Kid might want to play with?" he inquired, moving his flashlight's beam towards the rest of the basement. "Anything that the cops might overlook?" Because they did overlook a lot of things. Like that door, this basement and the fact that two kids were now wandering around in it. Some security.

Hm, anything else that Kid might want to play with...

Lloyd moved away from looking at the fusebox to look at the other stuff around the basement. He was still being as careful as he possibly could because he didn't want to trip, fall and hurt himself. As a kid of eleven years, he had had his fair share of bumps, bruises and scraped knees. He didn't want to get any of those while he was here.

That would also mean he had to explain to Holland and Talho where he got them and... well... he didn't think either would approve of him sneaking into buildings because of his curiosity in regards to a phantom thief.

He would probably end of grounded.

"I don't see anything yet," he said, though he was heading towards where a bunch of boxes to the side. Maybe there was something useful over there...

As soon as Lloyd looked away from the fusebox, Kaito stepped closer to it. He had it opened and modified without giving away what he was doing, and it was closed again before the kid could even look back this way. Okay, that was done. Time to see what else he could fiddle with.

"Gotta be careful, Lloyd," he said as he followed him over to the bunch of boxes that was sitting off to the side. "Don't know what we'll end up tripping over." Literally! Someone could've left a sharp object just lying around for no real reason, and it'll be bad if they tripped and fell on it. Kaito was pretty sure that the adults that Lloyd's been living with wouldn't be thrilled if he let anything happen to the kid.

A noise made him shine his flashlight into a corner. A box had just fallen from the top of another, tumbling onto the floor.

"Huh..." They were the only ones down here. It must've just fallen because its weight had settled and unbalanced it, and their walking was enough to knock it over.

Right?

Lloyd didn't think there was any other interesting things here in the basement. He had looked around and saw nothing but a lot of boxes that were marked for simple storage items that probably belonged to the people who used the building. There wasn't anything on any of them that might have been interesting to him.

Lloyd was disappointed. He had been hoping to learn and see a few more things. After all, they had gone through the trouble of breaking into the basement.

Which was definitely a thing he wasn't going to be telling his caregivers when he got home. They didn't need to know about any of this, nope. Not at all.

"What was that?" Lloyd turned around when he heard a noise from behind. Slowly, he started moving back over to Kaito. That wasn't anything they needed to worry about, right. Maybe they should check it out...

"Dunno..." Kaito kept his flashlight pointed towards the corner. "Thought it was just the boxes shifting from their weight. Or maybe it's a-"

A snarl came from the corner and the boxes moved. Out sprang a creature, all matted fur and scabbed skin, with a nasty set of teeth.

"-a rat." And what a rat it was! Instead of the tiny little rodent that one would expect to be down in a basement like this, this one was a monster! "Geez, it's huge!" And fearless, for it advanced on them, hissing and snarling. The ugly thing sure meant business.

Despite his initial surprise, Kaito made sure he was between it and Lloyd. "You know what? We should go." The teen kept his flashlight trained on it, but it wasn't going to be much help if that thing lunged for them. Kaito couldn't afford to get hurt when he had a show to put on in a few hours, and he sure wasn't going to let Lloyd get hurt, either. "Let's go back upstairs. Don't think there's anything else down here, anyway!"

Whoa! It was a rate, and it was a pretty big one! Lloyd had seen some pretty big rats but this one was definitely one of the largest he had seen ever. It looked pretty angry. Lloyd wasn't naive when it came to animals. Sure, most animals weren't going to mean any harm, and even if they did, there could be a very good reason why an animal would attack. Some people said that meant a human should never fight back at an animal.

But, there was all sorts of things that should also be factored in. Like, an animal could have an easier chance of killing a human, especially if it was bigger or venomous or poisonous. Protecting animals was important, but no one should do that at the risk of their own life like that.

It was lucky that Lloyd's airgun wasn't lethal though, as he pulled it out and popped the rat right in the forehead, knocking it out.

"You're right, we should probably go," Lloyd agreed, heading for the way out. He was careful as he stepped up onto the stairs so he wouldn't trip and fall them. Wouldn't that be ridiculous if he had managed to explore the basement without tripping, only to trip on his way out!

Geez... Lloyd was a lot more formidable than he looked. Kaito was impressed, but now that the rat's been taken care of, they should really get out of here. He followed Lloyd back up the stairs without making a sound - he didn't want that rat to wake up and chase them out. Nope. Not taking any chances here!

With little fanfare, they left the building through the same door they had entered, and Kaito made sure it was locked so nobody would notice. Then he led the way back to the front of the building, where it seemed like nobody had even noticed they had gone back there.

"Well, at least we got to have a look around." And Kaito got to fiddle with the fusebox; that should really help him out tonight. Now all that was left was to wait until the show started. Not a problem at all.

Stepping outside of the building was nice. He didn't realize just how musty it was in there until he was no longer confided to the basement. Sure, Midgar-Edge wasn't the best with its atmosphere, but it was a city and that was only to be expected with a city. Cities didn't get to have the same nice air as somewhere in the countryside. But, Lloyd was still able to breathe easy here.

He glanced up and down the alleyway before he followed Kaito back towards the crowd they had left earlier. It looked like it had gotten bigger. Word must have spread that Kaitou Kid was going to be here and more people had come out to see. Lloyd couldn't blame them. There had been some sort of pageantry to seeing him the first time Lloyd had seen him. It was kind of like seeing that a superhero was real.

And, Edge could kind of use a hero more than some other places. Or, so he heard.

Lloyd merged back into the crowd, as if he had never left it. "That was cool," he said up to Kaito. There was a bit of excitement in his voice when he spoke. He had really enjoyed being able to sneak around like that.

Hah, if Lloyd thought that was cool, wait until he got to see what tricks Kid had up his sleeves tonight! Kaito didn't say that, though. They did get to see what the basement was like and it was kind of interesting for a basement. He could've really done without the giant rat, but oh well. At least nobody got hurt.

Except for maybe the rat.

"See?" Kaito grinned at Lloyd. "We don't need that Kid guy to be around in order to do something fun around here." Lloyd had seemed pretty excited to sneak into a place that he wasn't supposed to be in. Kaito had done it so many times that it was pretty normal for him. But kids don't sneak around like that often. Or they do, but they almost always get caught.

"So... what do you wanna do now?" They checked out the basement. Not much else they could do with that building now, with all those cops around. And the closer it got to heist time, the antsier people would be.

Lloyd still couldn't stop being impressed by the mere size of the crowd that had gathered. It was a testament to how much Kaitou Kid's legacy was growing in this world. Lloyd wondered if that was what it was like in Kid's home world. Did people gather just to catch glimpses of him? How famous around the world was he? Were there people out there who were secretly rooting for his success and enjoyed it every time that the police had failed?

Lloyd wished he could ask Kaitou Kid himself. The stories the phantom thief could probably tell... Lloyd imagined them to be amazing.

But the crowd was really big now, so there wasn't a whole lot they would be able to do here anymore except stand around and watch. Lloyd kind of wanted to see, but he also wasn't sure if that would turn out well at all. He might not actually get to see any of the cool stuff, and he would have been stuck standing there for hours. He had gotten to do something cool, like sneak into the building's basement. Maybe it was best to leave for now.

Besides, he could always come back and watch when the time was right.

"Maybe we should go," Lloyd said, looking up at Kaito. It would probably be for the best, too. If someone thought there had been something causing problems, they might start searching for the culprits in the crowd. While he knew the adults in his life wouldn't have been as mad at him as his own parents, they probably would have caused a scene. Some of them could be...dramatic.

Just seeing how large the crowd was now - even though there was still plenty of time before tonight's show - pleased Kaito. These people were here to see Kaitou Kid. Some might be from his world, but a lot of them had never heard of the phantom thief before arriving on this planet. They wanted to see him, all the same. They wanted to see him escape the cops in what would be an impossible situation to many other criminals. They wanted to see a miracle.

And that helped made it all worthwhile. Despite all the planning and work involved, all the danger, the risk of getting arrested, the injuries. Making a fool out of his best friend's dad. Lying to him. To her. Kid's audience kept Kaito going. That, and knowing if he could just get his hands on Pandora before his dad's murderers could find it...

Kaito shook his head and smiled. Maybe he would find it tonight. Maybe not.

"Come on, then!" he said as he started to make his way through the crowd. "Stay close, alright? Don't wanna lose you in this mess!" Crowds were great to disappear into if you were being chased, but not so much when you're just trying to get out of the way. And Lloyd seemed like such a nervous, timid kid at times... Kaito thought it would be easy for him to get lost and confused in a crowded place like this.

Yet it was Lloyd who faced Kaitou Kid up on the roof of Radiant Garden's castle on the eve of the Struggle Tournament finals.

Heh. Maybe this kid'll run into the phantom thief on another rooftop tonight.
