Oh. Varric didn't mind carrying stuff for her? That was unexpected. Normally, when she went shopping with adults, she had things shoved onto her because they didn't want to be carrying it. And, why carry something when you had a child to do it for you? That was one of the points of having them. They were pack mules when you needed one.

She hesitated but still gave her remaining box over to Varric, freeing her hands up. "Thank you," she murmured, her voice very quiet. He was probably still able to hear her since it wasn't exactly like the store was filled with noise. It barely even had music playing overhead. She heard something like classic music, but she didn't recognize any of it. Not that music class had ever been her favorite. She remembered not even taking part in it.

She couldn't remember why, though.

Mei went back to looking for the items she needed. She needed to go through a couple more aisles, but she found the remainder of what was on her list. She tugged them off the shelf and juggled them in her arms over to the counter before resting them there. The cashier barely acknowledged her; he just started adding up the totals.

That was fine. Mei pulled her small wallet of her pocket. The money Holland gave her was in there.

"Not a problem." Varric didn't see why he couldn't help Mei out - he had already gone this far, right? Might as well. It was the right thing to do. Lots of adults thought that kids should carry a bunch of things around on their own and wouldn't have bothered helping. That was part of the problem with adults - when it came to kids, they were always looking down.

Once Mei finished finding everything and went to the counter to pay for it all, Varric followed and set what he was carrying onto its surface. The cashier didn't even bother to look up. Huh. Real talkative guy, wasn't he? Some bosses would fire - or kill in some cases - a guy who looked like he'd rather be anywhere but here. Couldn't have people looking bored at their job, after all.

Although this job probably really was that boring. It looked boring, anyway.

Mei waited until he finished counting up all the products that she and Varric placed on the counter. He mumbled the amount of money that he needed for the products, but Mei was able to hear what he was saying just fine. She, herself, could be a mumbler at times too. It was like being able to speak a different language sometimes.

Carefully, she counted out the money she needed and handed it to him, without there being a need for change. Once it was in the register, the guy bagged all of it, though Mei was sure there was going to be more than she would be able to reasonably carry on her own. Mei was a regular middle school student, unlike a lot of people her age in this world. She wasn't built for strength.

And, gym class had never exactly been her strong suit.

She grabbed the bags she was able to lift before looking at Varric.

"I don't suppose you would mind helping me carry these, would you?" she asked.

"Wouldn't leave you to drag all these home by yourself after all that," Varric chuckled, grabbing the remaining bags. Really. What kind of guy would help someone carry their stuff to the counter and then just leave? It was clear that Mei couldn't carry everything on her own. Even though everything was bagged now, that only made handling them slightly easier.

"Come on." Varric headed to the door and went out, keeping it open for Mei. Between the two of them, they should be able to manage. It wasn't like anything was going to happen, right? No fights breaking out in town or something exploding.

No, he shouldn't think that way. That might jinx what was otherwise a perfectly normal, calm, peaceful and somewhat boring day. Days like this were uncommon in Thedas. Knowing just what kind of shit happened in this world, Varric thought that it was safe to say that such days were uncommon here, too. Anyway, he had planned to help Mei until she didn't need his help anymore. It was the least he could do after she had let him tag along, breaking up the day a little.

Mei was thankful that Varric was still willing to help her out. Really, he had no real need to do such a thing. But, he was still willing to help her out, even if it meant going out of his own way. That said something about his character. Mei thought it was something that adults always forgot when they did rude things to others. Adults sure had a tendency to forget how foolish they liked making themselves look.

"Thank you," Mei murmured before she followed him out of the shop. It was still a busy street, but she noted that people were more likely to move to give her a bit of space once she was carrying bags. She supposed it was because no one wanted to draw attention to themselves by someone complaining if they knocked their bags out of their hands. It was a selfish reasoning for sure. But, if it meant that Mei had an easy time navigating the convoluted streets of Konoha, then she was alright with it.

She glanced over at Varric as she had to pause - a horse and wagon were going down the street and she didn't want to be run over.

"There isn't anything you need to do, is there?" she asked. If he needed help with something, she would help him. Otherwise, her destination led her outside of the village.

Look at that. People didn't mind jostling others while they passed each other, but the moment someone was carrying something, they actually moved out of the way. Because they didn't want to get in trouble or cause a scene. Varric found that both he and Mei could walk through a busy street unhindered just because they were carrying bags that nobody wanted to hit. Figures.

It did say something about Konoha, too. There were places out there where people would still run into you and knock all your stuff around. On purpose.

As they stopped, Mei asked him if there anything he needed to do here. "Nothing I can't come back for." Varric had been just looking around, seeing what sights in Konoha there was to see. He could come back later and do that. Right now, he was helping Mei out and he felt like that was a little more important than him sightseeing.

"Just lead the way, I'll be right behind you." As long as Mei's destination wasn't into the nearby woods that liked to eat people, things were grand.

Oh, Varric didn't have anywhere in the village he wanted to go. That was okay then. Mei was kind of relieved. She would feel obligated to help him out since he was helping her out. It only made sense. But, Mei was also getting tired of being in a large crowd and wanted to get back to the airship where she was able to curl up in her room without anyone bothering her. Unless it was a meal time, the others were likely to leave her alone. And, she had a whole slew of books she wanted to read.

Mei led the way through the village until she managed to reach the front gates. People were more sparse here since they weren't just hanging around there like they were in the rest of the village. She let out a small sigh of relief as she stepped outside the gates.

"I need to find the Axolotl," she said to Varric, though she wasn't sure if he understood what she meant. There was space outside the village where people were able to park all manners of things. That was where she left the Axolotl and that was where she went to look for it.

She was really hoping Holland hadn't been called away for one reason or another. Otherwise, she was going to have to wait for him to return for her.

"So, a ship then." Varric could just tell because it was named after a critter. Lots of ships were named after people, critters, or something else - status, symbols, emotions. They could be meaningful or just plain silly. The important thing was that the ship got a name. Some people thought it was bad luck for a ship to not have one.

Back in Thedas, a ship meant something that sailed over water. Here, it could mean anything that carried people and cargo and was able to move across far distances. It was a necessity to a lot of people here, since this planet was good to lifestyles that involved going to a bunch of places for various reasons in a pretty short amount of time.

"Should be here. It didn't leave, right?" Varric didn't ask Mei what the ship looked like. After surviving all those crowds in Konoha, the kid sounded like she could use a little break. It was clear that she wasn't comfortable when she had to talk a lot, and he wasn't about to make her stress trying to describe a ship to someone who, frankly, didn't know all too much about ships. Flying ones, anyway.

And he assumed it was a flying ship. Konoha wasn't anywhere near a large body of water.

"No, I don't think so..." Mei wasn't quite sure where it was when they parked it. That wasn't something she was paying attention to. Maybe she should have. She wouldn't be searching for it now. She tried to make a mental note of it for the next time she decided to go into town. Remember where your guardians parked the big fancy ship you all lived in. It was a good tip to have.

But, then she was able to see it, looming over a much small ship. Mei felt relieved. She went over to it, standing down where the ramp would lead to if it was open. She set her packages down and pulled out her cellphone, sending Holland a quick text so he knew to open the doors for her.

"This is it," she said to Varric as she tucked her cellphone away. She gave him a small polite bow, like she would have done to any adult back home. She noticed it wasn't so common out here and some of the adults she knew thought it was weird, but it was a habit she couldn't quite grow out of. "Thank you for helping me out today."

Varric let out a whistle as they approached the ship. This thing was not only huge, dwarfing - heh - a smaller ship that was parked nearby, but it looked pretty damn fancy, too. Must be worth a fortune in any currency that existed on this planet. He knew shit about flying ships, but this was definitely one that was well made.

While Mei was fiddling with her cellphone, he placed the stuff he was carrying beside the rest of the shopping. He assumed that she was messaging someone to open the doors for her. Maybe even for them to come down and help her bring everything in.

"No problem," he nodded. "Guess I'll see you around, then. If you ever need someone to help you carry stuff again and you see me, just ask, alright?"

Varric didn't wait for an answer, for it didn't need one. The dwarf waved farewell as he turned, heading back towards the village.

Mei didn't give a verbal response as Varric said his farewells. She simply waved goodbye. That was enough. Besides, she liked Varric. For an adult, she thought he was pretty cool. Most adults wouldn't have tolerated having to help a girl do something like a chore. But, he did and that made her like him. She would remember him and not avoid him if they met in the future, that was for sure.

The ramp for the airship came down, and Raikou came down with it. He grabbed some of her bags, which he brought back into the airship. Mei watched Varric's retreating back for another moment before she grabbed up the remaining of her bags and headed inside.

Shortly after she was in and the ramp came up behind her, the Axolotl took off.
