Moonlight and fresh air filtered down through the large crevice, a break in the earth and rock that otherwise served as a barrier between the world of light and the tainted underground. The ancient creature perched on the crumbling remains of what used to be a grand dwarven building, the space around him long since devoid of the civilization that had made its home here for centuries. Until the darkspawn had driven them back into certain cities, the dwarves' last holdouts against the all-consuming Blight.

Not the usual place to find a creature meant for the open sky, but here Durnehviir was.

The Deep Roads were a curious place to him. There was history, but what could be considered conventional signs of history were mostly left to be forgotten in the ancient ruins of thaigs. The creatures who survived here had to be resourceful or lucky to avoid the taint, and yet many were suffering from the taint regardless. The tunnels ran deep; the deeper one got, the worse the taint affected even the very rock it anchored to.

While Durnehviir would like to get a closer look, his huge form and awkwardness on the ground prevented him from prowling most of the Deep Roads. The most he could do was find places such as this, open to the sky above, that he could swoop into.

The dragon had nothing to fear from the taint. His kind was extremely resilient and he was even more so, due to the fact that he was technically a rotting corpse. There was nothing left for anything to infect. Durnehviir would be the one doing the infecting, not the other way around.

Talho had gone down into the Deep Roads.

She’d heard many things about the Deep Roads, but she had, for the most part, stayed out of them. They had a taint to them, and were dangerously filled with all kinds of creatures. Still, Talho went down there for this one time, just to check the place out. She didn’t like not having a good personal knowledge of the place, regardless of the dangers. She couldn’t depend on hearsay just because she’d heard a few things.

Leaving Adroc back at the Axolotl with a babysitter, she geared up and prepared herself. Then, she wandered off to a crevice she’d heard of that allowed a bit of a visual of what the Deep Roads had. She gazed around, seeing the abandoned buildings and…

… Okay. Was that a dragon that she was seeing perched on a building? There wasn’t a sight that one saw every day.

Now this was unexpected. There was a mortal soul nearby. Someone who was clean, not doomed to die haunted by the melody that those with the taint were forced to hear. Although that could change very quickly if one was careless.

Durnehviir could see her - a human woman who, at least, looked like she actually geared up for a trip to the Deep Roads. He had seen travelers who were ill-prepared for the dangers within. He doubted they had survived for long. The dragon knew that she had spotted him, yet so far she had not done the usual thing most mortals did when they had spotted him, which was to run away. Those mortals who did not flee were the ones he was most curious about, since that sometimes meant he was able to speak with them.

For the moment, however, he did not speak. Rather, he would see what she would do first. Would she run like the other mortals? Or would she get closer? Then, seeing his repulsive form, would she turn and flee? Durnehviir watched her, the only sound coming from him was his breathing, ragged as the air passed through his nostrils and into lungs that were no longer completely there.

It wasn’t every day that one found a dragon. Sure, they were getting a little more common with how they attacked towns and things, but this one was different. From what she heard of the dragons, they attacked nearly on sight and were destructive, but this one was more watching her, almost curiously. Talho reached for her pistol…

… But eventually decided that it might be best to get a grip on the situation first. Cautiously, she approached the dragon, taking in the area around him. The dragon was… interesting, to say the least. His form was captivating, decayed and rather revolting, and his breathing ragged, indicating that whatever rot was affecting him was also affecting the things inside of him.

“… You just going to sit there?” she finally asked.

Ah, so she was one of the curious, then. Not one who would flee from the sight of a decaying monster spending his time in a forgotten ruin. Others would have ran and prayed that he did not follow. The mortals who stayed and even dared to ask him questions... those were the ones worth keeping alive. For his own sake as much as theirs.

"Sometimes, it is better to wait, to see if those who know of one's presence approach first." Most of his kind were impulsive, quick to attack whenever they saw fit. Out of hunger, offense, or the urge to destroy, which all dragons had ingrained into their very beings. Durnehviir had spent what seemed like an eternity in the Soul Cairn, in unintended service to the Ideal Masters. As such, he had perfected the art of waiting over those countless bleak years.

"You are unlike most joorre. Most would flee at the sight of a decaying dovah." Thick slime oozed from between his teeth, slowly trickling down his lower jaw. "Drem Yol Lok. I am called Durnehviir."

Huh, so the dragon spoke.

Talho decided that it was best not to pick a fight with him. She straightened into a casual pose, deciding to at least act the part of someone civil. She had to wonder why he was just sitting here. What was it that he was waiting for, aside from seeing if someone was going to just waltz up to him like she did? There had to be another reason to just sit around.

He had mentioned that she was different from most joore. The word was unfamiliar to her, and she narrowed her eyes at it, and the rest of the unfamiliar words. She had heard that the dovah had their own language, but this was the first time she was hearing it with her own ears. It was very rough on her ears, she wasn’t sure she liked the sound of it.

She supposed, too, that she would be unlike most of the people of this world. Unlike most of the civilians she had run into, she had military training. If she fled from every weird sight she saw, then what kind of person could she call herself?

“I’m Talho,” she introduced, once Durnehviir had offered his own name. “Don’t suppose you know anything about this place?”

She was quick to respond with her own name. Good. Durnehviir appreciated common courtesy. Dragons were easy to offend, which normally did not bode well for the offender. At least he likely would not eat a human for forgetting to introduce themselves. Other dragons would attack for lesser reasons.

Talho asked him what he knew of this place. Durnehviir had some knowledge of the dark tunnels that run underneath the Western Continent. Most was the sort of knowledge one could easily pick up from reading a book about Thedas, but there were a few other things that were hidden from all except those who had the right senses. "We are in the Deep Roads, the dark secret below the Goddess' original junaar. Once the Dwemer - the dwarves - of Thedas thrived here in their cities, but they were overrun by an unending force of vulom. Darkness. They call it the Blight."

Durnehviir shifted a little so he was more comfortable. "The dov do not normally venture down here." Dragons preferred open sky. Even he would not be down here had it not been for the crevice that opened this thaig up to the world. "Any joor who comes to this place risks getting afflicted by the taint, especially if one attempts to reach the lower depths." Here, where they were close to the surface, the taint was limited. Talho would not want to explore further down, where the darkspawn were so thick that they had to climb over each other in order to move.

He could not physically see them. But to him, their souls - or what darkspawn had in place of souls, he was uncertain which it was - stood out beyond the layers of rock, glowing like a forest set ablaze.
