As they walked, figures appeared in the mist ahead of them.

Oogie Boogie stopped and squinted at the scene before him.

There were four figures in total. One was a woman, and Oogie Boogie knew immediately that she was where the screaming at come from. Only such a scrawny human woman could make such a loud and annoying noise. Even so, Oogie Boogie had liked her scream. It was one of terror and that had brought him joy.

The other three figures weren't human, even if they somewhat looked like it. They were as human as jack Skellington - that blasted fake king - would be considered. There were parts of him one could match to a human, but they were all off.

An unsettling air came from the foursome. The woman was on the road, on her knees and raised up as one of them clutched at her hair. Oh, they were harming her, apparently. That was where her terror was coming from.

Well, good for her. She was stupid enough to have gotten caught.

As figures started to appear in the fog, Link caught their scents. One was clearly human, but the other three were... not. They smelt so foul that the sack smelled like roses in comparison. A low growl rumbled in his throat, even before he could clearly see what the two of them were approaching.

And then they found them - three strange figures terrorizing a woman. At least, that was what it looked like. Link considered the possibility that this was an illusion caused by the phenomenon within the town. From here, it looked real, but he couldn't be certain. Even their scents might be trying to trick him.

If the scene was real, then there was someone in danger. If not, then danger awaited whoever tried to save her.

One way to find out.

Link barked, then plowed forward, rushing for the one that was clutching at the woman's hair. He snapped at its arm, then at its heels, harassing it until it finally took a swipe at him. The wolf jumped out of its reach.

Oh, were they supposed to help now? Oogie Boogie watched with bemusement as his newest servant ran off to be of some assistance to the woman. Oogie, on the other hand, didn't bother heading towards them. He remained where he was, stroking at his chin as he thought.

Was the scene before them real? That was the first thing Oogie Boogie thought about. He knew all too well about tricks and illusions. They were something he utilized quite frequently. They were honestly quite nice to use. Very effective. Nice to harass the people who annoyed you with. Oh, Oogie Boogie could just recall all the fabulous ones he had used against the people of Halloween Town who annoyed the crap out of him.

Wait, something was going on now.

If it had been possible, Oogie's eyes might have glazed over. As it were, that was impossible.

Instead, he turned his attention back to the scene before him. The one that had been holding the woman's hair wasn't anymore. She had fallen limp, almost like a doll. The three were now focused on the wolf who was attacking them.

....Did the woman have anything good on her?

Oogie was going to find out while everything else was distracted. He needed to get her away from the scene so he could sort through her pockets. After all, he was a king. He was entitled to whatever she had. He just needed the right moment.

Well, illusion or not, the strange figures were now focused on attacking him.

Link dodged as one tried to rush him, then circled around the trio. They had left the woman alone to attack him, so he was hoping that the sack was doing... something. Helping. Admittedly, he wasn't sure just how much help his companion was willing to provide. That sack was definitely shady.

Although probably more trustworthy than these things.

Snarling, the wolf sprung, front paws hitting his target's shoulders. It fell onto its back, knocking down another that was right behind it. As they scrambled to both get up and swipe at him, Link jumped off and chased after the third figure.

They had physical bodies, so that was a strike against the illusion theory.

Getting somewhere and not drawing attention to himself was easy enough for Oogie Boogie. He was used to be the shadow in the moonlit night. He was the one who would slip into children's nightmares, making them terrified to go to sleep at night. That was a lot harder to do than most people tried to give him credit for.

Just because he was large and normally lumbering around Halloween Town didn't mean anything when it came down to that. He owned Halloween Town (he did, regardless of what Jack Skellington or any of his little friends thought - like that one kid... the one with the stupid spiky haircut. Oogie couldn't remember his name) and that meant he was allowed to go wherever he wanted in it how he wanted.

He didn't really keep an eye on what was going on with the three beings and the wolf. The wolf could keep them distracted.

If he didn't, then he wasn't doing his job and Oogie Boogie wasn't going to pay him anymore.

Oogie Boogie stooped down by the woman. She was unconscious. Great. He picked her up as if she weighed nothing and slung her onto his shoulder. He only spared a brief glance at the fight before he jogged back towards the fence, ducking out of sight with his new load.

Link could see from the corner of his eye that the sack was leaving with the woman. That meant that he could give his opponents his undivided attention. The four combatants circled around each other, until one of them attempted to attack him from behind. Link spun around, caught its arm in his teeth and proceeded to rip it right off.

It didn't seem to like that and it tackled him. The others piled up on top of them. A scuffle ensued, but ended when Link tore through one of their throats, killing it. The surviving ones withdrew and scurried off into the fog. Link stared after them until he was sure they were gone.

With the opponent fully routed, he turned and trekked back towards the fence, aiming to catch up with the sack.

Oogie Boogie thought that this woman should have thought about losing some weight. She was pretty heavy for a woman of her height, and Oogie Boogie wasn't exactly a weakling. He was anything but a weakling. He was the strongest person in Halloween Town. Jack Skellington was just a spindly little twig in comparison to him.

But, this woman needed to hit the gym. He was sure Neo Domino had a nice one, with all that shiny human stuff they had in that place.

He didn't like that place. Humans were dumb with their obsession with shiny things. They could have had something a lot more interesting, like shadows and darkness, but nope. Humans were the most stupid of creatures. It was probably why they were so easy to spook. It was lucky they were stupid; Oogie Boogie would have been out of a job.

He made his way back behind the fence again, dropping the woman without much care. He could probably have been gentler, but she was unconscious so being nice didn't really matter. Crouching on the ground next to her, he started going through her pockets, barely registering when the wolf appeared again.

The sack hadn't gotten very far. Link found him again, going through the woman's pockets. The wolf let out a small huff, the equivalent of a sigh. What was he doing now? Link hoped that he was looking for identification. A lot of people in this world carried identification with them. It was a common thing in many different worlds.

It wasn't like he could really chastise the sack - he needed his help getting out of here.

Link crept closer and looked over the woman. She was unconscious, but she didn't seem to be injured. She was lucky - those things that had caught her could've easily harmed her, or worse. Maybe it was possible to wake her up, and then neither he nor the sack would have to carry her.

A distant howl caused his head to snap up, ears forward. Another wolf? Or something else?

Going through a human's pockets was an annoying difficulty to Oogie Boogie. As a sack of bugs, he had no pockets to speak of. He didn't have to bother rooting through them for any of his valuables. Where he kept his valuables? No one needed to know that. It was a perfectly hidden secret.

But, he found nothing on this woman but a wallet. He pulled it out, a frown on his face, and opened it. There was no money inside. Just one of those cards humans liked using for shopping and spending money that they didn't have and couldn't avoid to spend. And, a driver's license.

"People needing to get license to drive," Oogie Boogie grumbled, holding the thing at arm's length. "What next? Needing to be licensed for using your weapons?" Weapons were important for defense, and people needed to use them. Oogie Boogie personally came with a whole amazing arsenal at his disposal for whatever he wanted to use them for.

But, what now? He had taken the woman in hopes that he was able to get something off of her. At most, he could use her card but he had no need for the things that humans spent money on. He let the license drop to the ground, just in time to hear a noise.

"What was that?" he asked in a hiss, crouching down and looking around.

The only thing the sack had found of note was a driver's license. Link understood that people needed licenses to drive cars, since they were apparently more dangerous than riding an animal. So they took a test in order to qualify for this license. It didn't completely stop the number of car accidents that happened on a daily basis, but it ought to at least help keep those numbers down...

People also needed licenses for weapons, too. Not always - Link didn't have anything of the sort - but some places required them in order for their citizens to own and use weapons. As much as he wanted to tell the sack this, he couldn't speak to him in this form. Too bad - the reaction might've been interesting.

Unfortunately, they had other things to worry about now.

Link scanned the area around them, sniffing the air for scents. Nothing, but... was it just him, or was the fog getting really thick now?

..,yeah, it was. He could barely see a meter beyond his nose. The wolf took up a fighting stance and started to growl. He didn't like this.

Oogie Boogie didn't like the fog that was closing in around them. It wasn't because it was fog. No, he liked fog, normally. Fog was something he could hide in and troll the people who only existed for him to spook - namely humans. It was for him to travel easily in, as Oogie Boogie was better at skulking around than some of the idiots in Halloween Town gave him credit for (regardless of what they thought, he was a better scare master than that damn Jack Skellington was).

But, this fog. This was not a natural fog. It was not the type of fog that Oogie Boogie was capable of benefiting from.

He didn't like it.

"Something's coming," he said, low and under his breath. Through the fog ahead of them, past the broken fence, a figure was moving. It seemed to limp on a bad leg that was crooked at a weird angle, but it was moving steadily towards them.

"Wolf, that thing," he said, pointing. Was it alone? He wasn't sure, but he hoped so. It would be easier for him to kill it, and he didn't want to break a sweat. This was not the type of effort he was willing to put in. And, he wasn't willing to put his life on the line for anyone.

He wasn't a coward; he was smart. Or, so he told himself.

"Go get it," he said to the wolf again. That thing could attack it. If the wolf died, then Oogie Boogie knew to flee.

What was that thing? It was limping towards them, one of its legs completely crooked. Link couldn't catch a scent from it at all, but the vibes he was picking up from it were really unsettling. He went towards it, baring his teeth. As strange as this approaching figure was, he wasn't afraid of it. There were very few things that could possibly scare him these days.

Once he was close enough, he could make out the distorted features of the creature, and as it moved to strike him, he lunged, catching it by the throat. He still couldn't smell it, but he could taste it. Something foul and unnatural slid across his tongue and into his throat. The wolf wanted to let go but he hung on, sinking his fangs deeper and pulling the creature to the ground.

Link swung his head. A tear. The body flew some distance and tumbled onto the ground like a rag doll. He dropped its throat and backed away, hacking to get the taste out of his mouth. It didn't help much, so he stopped and stared at the fog.

Were there more of them?
