Varric had never planned to step into Thieves' Landing. Ever. Whenever something went awry and all evidence pointed to this town, then he had people he paid to go check things out for him. They did, as usual. Then they disappeared. Not usual.

And these guys were trained professionals. Some cowboys shouldn't be capable of stopping them. One was an archer who can draw his bow and stick an arrow in a gunman's eye before he could even draw his pistol. Another was an experienced College mage. Everyone else was on par with their skill. So Varric knew that something fishy was going on when they just suddenly vanished. A few days later and he was out here in this backwater, right in the middle of a shootout.

Not quite the middle. Varric had found an upstairs window with the perfect view of the ground. His finger was on Bianca's trigger as he waited for the next person to make a move, preferably a mistake.

"And you're saying these guys moved in a few weeks ago?" he asked his companion, a Khajiit with patchy tortoiseshell fur. The feline's orange eyes narrowed as she pulled another arrow out of her quiver, guarding the window at the opposite end of the dwarf's.

"They took over one of the buildings on the outskirts. Anyone who seems strange to them... they go missing. Like your friends." There was a noise outdoors and both of them went quiet, yet nothing came of it. "They only come out at night or when it's cloudy. This one thinks they smell funny."

"Well, that's great." It was both cloudy and almost night. Nearly everyone was hiding. Some of the residents, tired of these outsiders coming in and running around like they owned the place, were up in arms as well. Nobody wanted to be the one to make the next move in plain sight.

So now they were playing the waiting game. Which Varric didn't mind. He kind of expected to end up in this sort of thing sooner or later. He was more surprised it hadn't been sooner.

Ah Thieves' Landing! The place smelled like piss, beer and vomit. Ronald was not surprised over that as he'd been told this place was meant to be the American Old West, and if there was one place in the world that smelled like piss, beer and vomit, it was America. Ronald had gone there before. After the extravagance that was England in its splendor - granted, he was more likely to be near nobility and not the squalor on the streets - America was almost an embarrassment. It was one of the reasons he didn't like going there too much.

Of course, there was a ton of places in the Goddess' World that apparently came from America, but they all seemed to be different versions of America where that specific location didn't seem to have a corresponding counterpoint. Sometimes, the very geography of this place was confusing to him.

It did, though, become very clear as he walked down the main street that something here was... not right. There was no one around, not a soul. He knew it wasn't like thieves were going to be rampaging the street, but he had expected to see them milling around. Pissing. Drinking. Vomiting. Any one of the things that made this place have the extraordinary scent that it had. But, there wasn't anyone.

"This is weird..." he muttered to himself. That was when someone shot at him, hitting the ground just an inch from his foot. "Jesus Christ!" he shouted as he stepped back. A bullet wouldn't really hurt him the way it would hurt a human, but that didn't mean he want to be shot. What the hell was going on here that they were randomly shooting passersby?

One moment, it was silent. The next, someone shot at a guy who appeared on the main street. He shouted. And then everyone was shooting at each other again. Varric took advantage of the chaos, spotting one of the strange outsiders who had been causing a mess of things. The dwarf waited until his target decided that he was going to sneak up on the sharply dressed man in the street, aimed, then put a bolt between the outsider's eyes before he got anything done.

Those eyes were glowing. They stayed glowing, even after the man dropped to the ground. Kind of creepy.

Varric let out a sharp whistle before he called down to the street. "Hey, you! In the nice suit!" There was only one guy down there who was dressed in what anyone would consider 'nice' attire. Not that he was one to judge people by how they dressed, but Varric got a good feeling about him. He had been sizing up people for years using factors besides the clothing on their backs. "Better get up here!"

There was no other place the guy could seek shelter at, unless he wanted to run right into the line of fire. Plenty of the shooters were at ground level and were willing to open fire on anything that moved. Varric was willing to watch the guy's back if he decided to head over to this building and up the stairs.

What the hell was going on here? Ronald heard it was some sort of rogues' playpen, but he didn't think there were going to be gunfights in the middle of the street.

Okay, scratch that. They were Americans, and Americans loved nothing unless they loved their guns. Ronald really should have seen this coming.

He was aware someone was trying to sneak up on him from behind, but he was trying to see where the one who shot at him was holding out. Besides, he was way faster than any human could possibly be, so he would have been able to disarm them and probably not them unconscious once he needed to. As it turned out, though, he didn't need to. Someone did it for him. How nice of them.

When he heard someone call to him, he glanced up to see the window that the person was in. Ronald sighed, took a step back and made a jump for it. He landed easily on the window sill before dropping in. If this guy was going to try and attack him, he was in for a rude awakening. Ronald wasn't in the mood.

"So, what's with the shoot out?" he asked. He stepped away from the window, lest he got shot at again.

Forget stairs, then - this guy just jumped up to Varric's window. The dwarf stepped aside to let him in as if this sort of thing was normal. Which it was on this planet. There were people out there who could jump even higher. Probably some of the other people involved in this fight could, if they only stopped shooting at each other.

"Oh, you know, the usual," he replied when asked about it. "A group of people getting pissed off at another group of people. Apparently, the locals don't take kindly to outsiders taking over a building and then supposedly kidnapping people."

"This one's starting to think that they're vampires," commented the Khajiit at the other window. There was a scream outside, and everyone in town went quiet to watch as one of the outsiders, having picked up a gunman by his vest, chomped down on his victim's throat.

"Yep, definitely vampires." Sure, why not? Vampires fighting cowboys sounded like the sort of thing that happened around here. It got noisy again once everyone started shooting at the vampire in question, who lunged up onto a balcony across the street in order to attack someone else. Varric went back to his spot and took aim. "That explains a lot, though I can think of at least a dozen other things that would be worse."

Ah, right. Someone took over a building they weren't supposed to have, and then they were probably kidnapping people. And, they could very well possibly be vampires too. To some people, that might seem rather crazy and insane, but Ronald shrugged that bit off. He was from a world of demons. Vampires should could be possible. He was pretty sure there were vampires living here. He might have seen one or two at some point, even if he didn't quite realize it.

"Well, I'm a shinigami and not a Seireitei shinigami but a different shinigami, so why not vampires?" he asked, raising his shoulders in a shrug. "So, are they in the wrong then? And, they're really not supposed to be there? Because, if not, I'll help out."

Ronald wasn't always the type of person to lend assistance, but he was an expert when it came to death. If people were dishing it out when they weren't supposed to be, then he didn't mind getting involved and letting them know what was what, even if that meant they were going to die instead. Served them right for trying to be death bringers themselves.

Besides, he couldn't die. If these people were really dangerous, then Ronald had a better chance of dealing with them than some cowboys. And a dwarf. And a cat.

"Vampires or not, I got business with those guys, since they're probably the reason why my people are missing." Chances were they were either dead or quickly heading that way. Varric didn't like that, but as long as there was a chance they were still alive, he was willing to go fight vampires in order to find them. It was his fault they were in this mess, after all. "Locals want them out, too. Which is why they're now forming a mob in the street, I guess."

After the last visible vampire had been gunned down, some of the men had grown bold and left their covers, grouping together and shouting. "At least they're optimistic about their chances."

"Why don't they stay in the shadows?" inquired the Khajiit as she watched the mob advance on the building that was currently a vampire lair. "The moon is almost out. More of them will leave their nest to hunt the humans and feed."

"Because, Patches, people feel more confident when there's a lot of them. Same goes for birds and deepstalkers." Varric left the window and headed for the stairs. "If we're going to help, then we'd better get closer. Just not too close." The building that mob was heading for was a little too far away for his taste. If they could sneak after them and find a closer building for cover, they would have an easier time shooting any vampires that came out of that place.

And they would have an easier time protecting these cowboys. They didn't have a lot of experience dealing with supernatural beings, Varric guessed. Otherwise, they would know that storming a vampire lair when those vampires knew they were coming was a terrible idea. Nice to know that the other supernatural being here - shinigami-but-not-that-shinigami guy - was on their side.

Ronald was pretty sure he understood what exactly was going on here, and he didn't need many more details than what was being given to him. It was quite a simple situation to understand, really. Vampires caused problems - sucking the blood of humans was always problematic, as well as unsanitary - and the people here did not approve. What else was there to understand? There was apparently a mob forming outside as well. A cowboy mob. Ronald couldn't help but roll his eyes at that. Humans liked forming mobs over things. Sometimes they helped, but mostly they just caused problems.

Well, he guessed he needed to help fix the problem before the humans caused more.

"If these vampires on in that building," he said, jerking his thumb toward the window, "let's just use the mob. They're out their causing noise and drawing attention, like humans like to do. Let's go around back. Most of the vampires won't be expecting that."

And, if there was a guard or two there, they could take them out. Ronald had no qualms about killing vampires when he wasn't supposed to. They weren't on his lists; there was no paperwork involved with them for him.

"I kind of like that idea." Once Varric reached the bottom of the stairs, he went for the building's doorway and looked out. Everyone was too busy lighting torches and shooting their guns in the air to notice them. "Except that if we're found and there's something really bad in that building, we're the ones who's going to be neck-deep in bloodsuckers. Your guys' neck level, not mine."

"You have Bianca," replied the Khajiit. "Just shoot. Stakes through the heart all around."

"True. Would that work on these vampires?"

"These ones should die like everyone else in Tamriel."

"Well, at least we know they can actually die." Some stories have it that the vampires actually don't. All that really did was cause problems for the other characters and they're forced to seal up the vampire in some way. Hopefully, without he or she escaping years later when everyone forgot about them. That sometimes happened, too. "There's an alley just across from us. Should get us around to the back without anyone noticing."

"Well, I'm not exactly human, so the worst they can do to me is knock me out and fail at using me as a human sacrifice," Ronald said as he followed after the dwarf and Khajiit. He didn't know of Tamriel vampires, as these ones apparently were, worshiped anything, but if they were planning on using someone as a sacrifice, he would be an awful choice. As a shinigami, the only part of him that was in any way human was how he looked. Other than that, he couldn't be used as one.

Someone tried sacrificing him before. He was supposed to be doing work, but someone caught him by surprised. He had held off on freeing himself because he wanted to see if it was going to be a sexy human sacrifice.

It wasn't.

There was a lot of nonsense going on outside on the street. Ronald glanced at it before skirting off on the same side of the street he was on. He didn't go too far, just far enough that he wasn't so noticeable as he crossed the street to the alleyway that the dwarf pointed out. he kept his eyes on the crowd as he made for it. Once he was in the alleyway, he waited but didn't hear anyone notice that they had gone that way.

"I hope this building's got a back door," he muttered as he went for the back of the building. Oh look, it did. Lucky.

Why did all the lairs of the villains - human and otherwise - come with back doors? Varric knew that it was often so they could escape the heroes once their plans went astray. But having one still meant that those very same heroes could use it to get the jump on them. He guessed that these vampires had an excuse in that they just simply took over this building, but still.

The lady of the group tried the door. It wouldn't budge. "Locked," she hissed under her breath.

"No worries, I got this," Varric said as he stepped forward, putting Bianca away and drawing his set of lockpicks from his coat. "Lost count of just how many locks I opened for whichever protagonist I've been following. What's nice about this world is that no matter where we are, most of the locks work in almost the exact same way." He got the door unlocked within moments; carefully, he opened it, making sure it wasn't attached to any trap triggers.

There weren't any, but the wall directly across from the door was covered in blood and... other things. Night had nearly fallen, but there was still enough light for Varric to see it. "Now, isn't that cheery."

Oh, the dwarf could pick locks. That was super convenient. It was even more convenient that the locks of the varying worlds were often the same unless they were digital. It was funny how the most weirdest of things were similar in between the varying worlds, but other things weren't. One could pretty much make a scholarly career off of trying to figure out all of the differences and similarities. He wondered if there were universities offering degrees in such a subject.

By the time his thoughts on that were completed, the lock was open. Ronald followed them into the building, which was splattered in blood.

"Why are vampires so messy?" he muttered to himself, looking over the blood. The sight didn't bother him. His trade was in death and blood kind of came hand-in-hand with death. He didn't particularly like seeing it as it was likely to get on his clothes and blood stains weren't the easiest things to wash out of nice clothing, especially his white shirt.

"I'm guessing we need to go up for them," Ronald said, glancing at a staircase he spotted through a doorway. "We don't want to get caught on the stairs though." Being caught there meant they could only fight one at a time. Was it better idea to try and draw the vampires down to them, so they would be the ones caught?

Vampires were a lot messier and bloodier in real life, just like everyone else. In the stories Varric read, they either lived in big fancy castles or houses that only the rich could afford. Oh, and a lot of them were unnaturally attractive. Judging from the one they had seen earlier, the kind of vampirism they were dealing with right now didn't do one's face any favors.

The shinigami pointed out the staircase, and he did have a point. If they got caught while going up it, there wasn't going to be much room. But they could force the vampires into the same kind of trap if they played their cards right. "This one can sneak up and lure them down to us," suggested the Khajiit.

"As long as you're careful, Patches." Varric drew Bianca again and quickly checked her over. "Judging from their taste in interior decoration, they might decide to use you for a rug."

"Khajiit more likely to sneak up on them and turn them into rugs," retorted the feline as she started to sneak up the stairs. Varric couldn't hear any footsteps from her at all. She disappeared around the turn and all was quiet. Then it sounded like she threw some kind of small object, causing voices to raise up in alarm. The Khajiit was back down the stairs before anyone could find her.

"They're coming this way," she reported, drawing out a pair of daggers made of ebony.

"Guess the fun's about to start," replied Varric.
