Riki huffed when he had realized he had taken another wrong turn.

This shouldn't have been so difficult. He had been here before. He went in and gotten out without too much trouble. He had conquered this forest already! So why was he getting so turned around now? Did the forest change? Had it decided that it wasn't causing as many people to get lost as it liked, so it switched around its trees and bushes and pathways? Was it that stubborn?

Why do these trees all look the same?

Aaaaahhhhh! He had to get out of here so he could go back to his own forest and see his littlepon!

"Calm down and think like Heropon," Riki said to himself. He was Heropon and he had been here before! He wasn't going to let the forest's bad mood put him in a bad mood. Nope! Taking a deep breath, Riki stared at the pathways in front of him. The last time he was here, he had taken...

"This one!" And away he went, hopefully towards the edge of the forest and not deeper in. It really was embarrassing, being a forest creature and getting lost in a forest he had been to before.

If there was one thing to be said about Jack Atlas, it was that he didn't like to be the loser. And, he was no failure. Both of those things were things that could be said about Jack Atlas. So, maybe that was two things. Maybe they could be the same thing, so he didn't come out as a liar when he made such a statement, as Jack Atlas was also no liar.

One of the first things he learned about the world all those months ago when he got here was that Kokiri Forest was a weird ass place. Most specifically, it was easy to get lost in. Some people were said to never have come out of the place. Jack had no idea who those people were as no one ever seemed to place any names along with them. Jack always took that as a sign that those stories were fake, as normally a person would be able to give a name if someone they knew went missing. Even the best story tellers could come up with a name.

So, since he had the free time, Jack had gone to Kokiri, to see its Lost Woods and come out without a problem because he was King Jack Atlas and there was nothing in the world that King Jack Atlas couldn't do.

...Including getting lost, which Jack happened to be at that moment, even if he wasn't going to admit to that.

"Damnit..." Jack had no idea where he was at the moment, but he knew what he needed to do, and that was fine a way out. He rounded a tree, only to notice a familiar sight up ahead. "...Riki?"

Riki stopped in his tracks when he heard his name.

"That voice..." he mumbled. That voice. That bold tone. Just the way his name was said. There was only one person Riki knew who had a voice like that. When he glanced ahead, he suddenly spotted who he was expecting to see.

"Jack!" Riki suddenly hurtled himself towards the duelist, knocking him down with a force that could've taken down something much larger than a tall human like Jack Atlas. Riki promptly found himself laying on his friend's chest. "Riki glad to see Jack! Many twists and turns in forest... not sure when Heropon see friendly face again!" Not only did he find a friendly face, it was a friendly face he knew, and that was a great bonus!

"Wait." Riki crawled over to Jack's face. "Duel King not suddenly lost in Lost Woods?" Because Jack Atlas didn't get lost. Unless this was a special case...?

It was Riki. Jack was in luck because he was in a bad mood by that point. Right now, if he had to run into some stranger, he might have been in too bad of a mood to deal with them. He would have let himself get further lost in the forest just so he would be able to get far away from them. But, it was Riki and he liked Riki, so he wouldn't have minded having Riki around while he was lost.

Which he wasn't. He was not lost. Jack Atlas didn't get lost.

There was a loud grunt as Jack was knocked to the ground. He felt slight pain as his back hit the ground roughly. That only seemed to aggravate him, though he tried to remind himself that Riki wasn't a human and he wouldn't have thought anything of it. Riki was heavy, considering his size, and Jack wondered how many Nopon his chest could take before it collapsed and he died.

He should probably not be thinking about that.

When Riki asked if he was lost, though, Jack had visibly flinched. Was it that obvious that he was lost? He wasn't supposed to be out here. He knew that much. But, did it look that obvious?

"I'm not lost," he said with only some of the annoyance seeping into his voice. "I came exploring. I just don't know what exact part of the forest I'm in because I've never been here before." That was not the same thing as being lost. Not to Jack Atlas, who didn't get lost.

But, that also made him wonder. "Are you lost?" he asked. "What are you doing here?"

Riki stood up, balancing on Jack's chest as if it was normal for him to do this. Which it was, although Jack normally wasn't the one on the receiving end. Unfortunately, Wes was starting to get really good at dodging Riki whenever he tried to tackle him, so maybe it was time to move on to someone else.

Judging from his most recent results, Jack seemed perfect! Riki wouldn't expect any less from Neo Domino City's finest!

"Riki not lost!" the Nopon proclaimed, puffing out his chest. It was true! Well, mostly. He did get turned around a few times. "Riki exploring Lost Woods, but not because Riki lost. Forest no match for Heropon's great forest senses!" Because he had those. All Nopon did. His were just sharper because he was also very heroic. That made prefect sense.

"But if Jack here..." Riki continued, finally hopping off of Jack's chest, "then exploring better!" Because getting lost exploring was way more fun when a friend was with you!

So... Riki was lost?

Fair enough. If it was possible for Riki to get lost, Jack supposed there was a small chance he might have also gotten lost in this place. Not that he was going to admit that out loud to Riki at all. And, he was pretty sure he wasn't lost because Jack Atlas jut didn't get lost.

Once Riki got off his chest, Jack immediately got up and onto his feet. He did a very thorough inspection of his clothing, making sure that there was no dirt on them. He liked wearing white. It was a colour that was hard to pull off, and he pulled it off immensely. But, white was so easy to get dirty. He would be alright with a bit of dirt, especially depending on how he got it, but dirt that was there because Riki knocked him on the ground wasn't allowed.

There, he was fine now.

"Then, we should explore together," Jack agreed. Traveling with Riki was better than traveling by himself. It would have surprised his friends back home to know how much he actually liked Riki. They didn't seem like a pair that would get along, but they did.

Jack indicated for Riki to go ahead. "Lead the way." He could easily see over Riki's head, so it wasn't a problem to let him go in front. He was probably less likely to lose Riki that way.

Okay! They were traveling together now, exploring this vast forest. Because they wanted to. And not because they were lost or anything silly like that!

"Friends head down this path, then!" Riki said as he pointed, pleased that Jack would allow him to lead the way. Of course, the choice didn't need much thinking over. The Nopon lived in a forest and knew how to travel through one without getting eaten. Jack was a city human who probably didn't spend a lot of time in forests. More likely to get eaten.

Although, Riki thought that some of the stuff that happened in Neo Domino City was just as likely to get one eaten as what went on in Makna Forest. Very strange place, that city.

Anyway, away they went! Riki started heading down the path, easily bouncing over a few tree roots and around a bush. He wasn't going too fast, so Jack should be able to keep up. Even if the Nopon had decided to go faster, Jack could still keep up with him - he was quick on those long human legs of his.

Jack followed after Riki. It was probably hard for some people to follow after someone like Riki, who was a bit of a bouncy mess whenever he moved around. He rarely seemed to just walk straight like a normal human would have. Jack assumed it was something that was just common with Nopon. Jack probably had more contact with Nopon in this world than most humans did, so he thought that was something he had at least had a handle on.

It wasn't quiet walking through the forest, but it wasn't loud either. Everything around them seemed like it was making noise, but it was all peaceful forest noises. Which might have seemed odd considering where they were, but Jack wasn't one to look into it too much.

Cursed or haunted forest or not, it was still a living, breathing forest. It operated just like any other.

"Do you have any idea where we might be going?" Jack asked, if only to hear himself talk and break the otherwise quiet forest around them. Sure, he liked the forest noises, but he liked his own voice as well. He didn't think that Riki had any true idea where he was going, but he might as well ask anyways.

"Of course Riki know where friends might be going!" Riki replied. They were going from one area of the forest to another. Even the smallest of littlepon could tell them that! As for the details... well, judging from the looks of the foliage they were passing through, they should be heading towards the edge of the woods. Not deeper in, where the supposedly scarier stuff was waiting to ensnare its hapless victims and keep them trapped within the forest forever.

Although, considering the winding nature of this forest, it was possible that they really were heading deeper in.

But those were just details! The type of details that tall people would fret over and whenever they did that, they never got anything done! Riki paused to examine tracks on the path. Knowing the animals that passed by was an important aspect of forest exploration (and survival). The tracks were small and, upon further study, looked like they belonged to an Electrike. Nothing to worry about there!

"Does Jack not trust Heropon's forest senses?" Riki asked as he continued walking.

Riki had no idea where he was going.

That was a very obvious thing to Jack at that exact moment. Sure, Riki had an idea of where he wanted to go, but he wasn't really going there. Not for certain, at any rate. He was just hoping that his senses would take him in the right direction.

"No, I just your forest senses completely," Jack replied, rather sincerely. He didn't add that he was trusting them to not know where to go while in Kokiri and that he was trusting them to probably get them lost even deeper into the forest. They were probably going to end up in a lot of trouble during this trip. Jack wished it was something he had thought about; he had maybe put his own senses on a little too high of a pedestal.

He wasn't going to admit to that at all, though. That was something that he would never admit to.

"Tell me when you have an idea of where we are," Jack said. He had to dodge around a thorny bush to keep it from snagging his jacket.

Of course Jack trusted Riki's forest senses! He was a very smart human. Humans often weren't very smart at all. Riki had to rescue a group from Makna's river the other day. Apparently they thought they could kayak through the swift current.

Which was all well and good - maybe they really did know how to put up with the current - but they failed to take into account just how tasty they and their boats looked to the forest's wild creatures! Everyone capsized and nearly drowned, got eaten, or both. Riki had to haul everyone ashore with the help of some of the friendlier creatures.

"Jack be first to know," the Nopon replied cheerfully. Several minutes of wandering through the woods later - Riki hummed the entire time - and he stopped. Going quiet, he sniffed. Then he turned around and faced Jack.

"Riki smell camp." Fire, food, gas, other stuff. Now, who had decided that this was a perfect place to go camping in? That wasn't a bright idea at all!

Jack let out a noise to Riki saying he would be the first to know. It wasn't much of a response, but he didn't have a proper response to that. Just that he had heard Riki. It was important right now for them to make sure they acknowledged each other, so they would know if they vanished or something. If Jack didn't make noise, it was possible something could snatch him and Riki wouldn't even notice.

Of course, that was if something was capable of snatching someone like Jack. They would need to be able to sneak up on Jack; he didn't think that was an entirely possible feat. He would put up a fight as well. He might not have had the warrior capabilities that Riki possessed, but he still grew up in the streets. He knew a thing or two about handling himself.

"Camp?"

Jack stopped and sniffed the air, but he didn't smell anything. Not really. If there was a scent that could reach the human's nose, it was very faint that it was barely registered. Jack continued walking, sniffing as he went. Wait, there it was.

"Do you think you can find it?" he asked Riki. Riki's nose would be much stronger than his.

"Riki can find anything with nose!" Besides, the scents coming from the camp were so noticeable to him, it would be hard to not find it, even if he tried! "Jack follow Riki and Riki go to camp," he said, before breaking away from the path they were on and into the forest's undergrowth.

The Nopon moved easily, although he used his Biter to cut down or push away any branches that were too annoying, thus creating a path for Jack to walk through.

After minutes of following his nose and seeing not much besides greens and browns, Riki broke into a small clearing. It was recently made, for he could see the freshly cut bushes piled up off to the side, and the branches of the surrounding trees had been trimmed away for more room. Those branches were stacked neatly beside what was left of a campfire, along with a few coolers meant for food and drink. A safe distance away from the campfire was a tent.

From the smell, it was new, but one side was completely tattered. The front of the tent was open, with a sleeping bag resting haphazardly beside an unlit lantern. Nobody was in sight.

"Hmm... camper not here." Very strange. And suspicious! What happened here?

Jack followed after Riki to the makeshift path that he was using to lead them towards the possible camp in question. It had been lucky that he had been breaking things that were in Jack's way; his jacket was likely to get torn, and that would have annoyed the duelist far too much. There were many things in this world he had come to tolerate. Wrecking his clothing was not something he approved of.

He wouldn't have turned back, but he would have been a lot more angry when dealing with whoever he would run into next.

It didn't take long for Riki to get them to the camp. If there was one thing about Riki that Jack always knew he could trust, it was his nose. And, probably his stomach. Riki could be a glutton at times. More than once had Jack come to the Axolotl to find they needed to buy more food because Riki had eaten a lot of it on his last visit.

The camp looked recent, but there was no one nearby. Jack stepped around it, careful not to step on anything that could prove relevant to them.

"It looks like someone's been here recently, though," Jack said as he crouched down by the small fire pit. He held a hand over it; heat was still coming off of it.

Why did someone even want to camp here? Riki thought that all those rumors about the forest being sentient, haunted, cursed and everything else was enough to keep most people away. But here they were in a camp that had been set up recently, with a tent with one side all tattered and the remains of a fire that was put out just a short while ago. Either that, or it died out on its own.

A good camper wouldn't leave a fire unattended. That made Riki think that the camper didn't leave on their own accord. The Nopon snooped around the tent. There wasn't much inside that was interesting, but the ground around it was a completely different story.

"Jack! Look and see what Riki found!" Riki pointed to the drag marks in the dirt by the tattered side of the tent; they led off into the surrounding brush. That might explain why they couldn't find the camper, but how come they didn't hear anything earlier? There hadn't been any screaming or anything. Maybe what took the camper away was very sneaky!
