Besides the gunfire at the front of the building, it was quiet. Sami didn't like it. She shifted in her spot quietly, so she had a better view of the back entrance without being noticeable. From deep within the darkened hallway, a low guttural growl could be heard. Then footsteps. They were heavy, bending the floor with their weight. The creature emerged from the shadows and into the daylight.

It was, from what Sami could tell, reptilian. An oversized, mutated crocodile, able to put most of its weight on its hind legs. It was wearing armor, with some of the pieces looking like they were embedded into its scarred hide. Clearly, it was serving as a living weapon for whoever was attacking the facility. It flexed its sharp claws as it scanned the area for prey.

Nobody moved in its sight. Sami was hoping that even the clones, with their limited lifespans, had enough common sense and survival instinct to remain hidden. Unseen behind her rock, Sami took aim with her rifle, designed to puncture through even the toughest scales and hide. She had found it a necessity to have such power behind her shots while living here. It was possible, though, that the croc might leave without attacking them, if the battle on the other side of the building could lure it back.

Even so, she wasn't taking any chances. The moment that the croc decided to attack someone in this area, she planned to open fire.

What the hell was that? Eggman was just able to see the weird crocodile creature that emerged as he peered quickly over the top of his covering rocks. He did not like seeing it. Whenever something new came into a conflict like this, that meant that things were only going to get worse. He knew this sort of thing only too well as he was typically the cause of this.

"What sort of karmic day am I have?" he asked as he rummaged in his coat. Someone - who he was unable to see from his current position - was shooting at the croc, which meant he wasn't going to. If he did, he might draw its attention and ire and it would come for him.

No, Eggman was going to play it as safe as he could. If he was able to even get a moment, he would bail from this. In fact, as part of his rummaging, he pressed a button that would send a summons for his Eggmobile on his nearest airship so he would be able to get out as quickly as possible. His rummaging continued and he produced five small beetle-like robots.

These ones weren't spy robots, but they were going to do something more interesting for the moment. He set them on the ground and they scurried towards soldiers, a tiny ticking sound coming off of each of them.

Sami waited. Someone - not anyone who had been in the lab with them - had wandered onto this side and started shooting at the croc, which immediately resulted in it roaring and stomping towards him. Since it wasn't anyone who was hiding in this area under attack, Sami didn't fire. She kept her rifle aimed at its retreating back, then it disappeared around the corner of the building as it chased the idiot who attacked it so recklessly. There was a scream and the sound of something slamming against the building's wall, then it was quiet over there.

The commander shifted in her spot. The croc didn't come back.

Instead, she heard yelling and more gunfire than before on the other side of the building. Sami counted off the time in her head - one minute, then two. The battle waged on. "Retreat," she hissed sharply behind her; the clones were quite willing to comply and fled the area, disappearing deeper into the swamp.

As for her, she was going to stay for now. Sami wanted to see who these intruders were and depending on the battle's outcome, she might have to be the one who put that huge croc down.

The bugs Eggman had sent off blew up beneath the soldiers, though not enough to kill them. It simply... damaged them enough that they wouldn't be a problem anymore. Eggman wasn't quite sure what else was going on with the battlefield, but he was already determining his escape route via his Eggmobile.

"It should come from up there," he murmured to himself until his own voice was drowned out by gunfire. There were more people here suddenly. But, who? He was uncertain, but he wasn't really willing to go traipsing off to find out! That could be left off to whoever it was that wanted to finish dealing with these people.

Eggman peeked over the wall he was hidden behind and saw no croc, but he was sure the battle was still on-going as he could hear it. From his spot, he could see the woman soldier. Ah, maybe he should ask her so he could use whatever plan she was making to get away.

Eggman scrambled from his spot to hers, hiding down in a slump. "So, do you have some sort of plan?" he asked. He waved his hand vaguely over his shoulder. "About that?"

Eggman was still around, huh? Sami thought that maybe he would've ditched the same time that the clones had fled. She didn't glance at him, instead keeping watch in case the croc suddenly came around to this side of the building again. The noises she was hearing told her that she might be waiting for a while.

"I want to see who's controlling that thing," she said. Whoever it was had wanted something from this facility, whether it was the clones or the Black Hole data that had helped create them. They were willing to attack and kill researchers and guards they could've just as easily held captive, even bringing along that croc to clean house. Why do that?

"I do have a plan, though, if you're game." There was still a chance for the doctor to get out of this before things got messier than they already were. But whatever there was around that corner to discover might be interesting to him. Science was at the heart of this matter; those people fighting each other were rival interests, both to him and to each other. "We sneak over there, see what the situation is, then deal with both the croc and whoever it didn't kill off yet. If I can get a clear shot at its vitals, I can bring it down."

She might need more than one shot. It depended on how durable and how angry that creature really was. "After it's quiet again, we figure out just what lab it and its handlers crawled out of." Again, Eggman could choose to just walk away. Would he pass up this opportunity, though?

Huh, so she did have a plan after all. Eggman wouldn't say it was a good plan, but he was still a might curious - how could he not be? - about what exactly had been going on in this place, and if he could get his hands on any sort of data, that would be more ideal than leaving empty handed. Besides, there would still be some time before his Eggmobile got there, and he was free until then.

"I'm game," he finally agreed. "You go, and I'll be right behind you. " He indicated for her to go on ahead, as he was the scientist and not the soldier. That meant she should be leading the way, no? There was no reason for him to get shot at when a soldier meat shield was right in front of him.

Even if he was a bigger target.

He tugged on the end of his mustache. Maybe for good luck. He wouldn't say.

Sami smirked. "Let's move out, then." She left her cover and headed towards the side of the building, easily making her way across the swampy ground. Once she got there, she kept close to the wall, moving so she was silent. She didn't know just how well that croc could hear, but she wasn't going to take any chances with it.

Reaching the corner, Sami peered around it. The side of the building that she, Eggman and the clones had been didn't look all that much like a battlefield, but this side did. Bullet holes marred what was left of the building's wall, the rest having been blown apart by explosives. Fire burned in several spots and most of the nearby vehicles had been destroyed. She couldn't see all the casualties, but she did see enough to know that most of the people who had been involved in this battle weren't ever going to leave this swamp.

The croc had its back turned to her while it started to eat someone's corpse.

Sami spotted only two of the intruders - a far cry from the army that had charged in, guns blazing. It was quiet enough now for her to overhear why as they bickered with each other. "These guys just lost control of the beast they brought with them," she whispered to Eggman. Now the two men were hiding under the skirt of a deflated hovercraft, as if that was enough to protect them. Maybe someone should've tested their experimental weapon and made sure they could keep control of it before sending it out into a real fight.

As of right now, she didn't have a good shot at the croc. Sami had to wait for it to finish eating and move, unless there was a way to distract it.

Eggman waited for the soldier woman to move first. He gave it until the count of three before he went after her, just in case she drew their attention accidentally and gotten herself shot at. Once he was sure it was safe to follow her, he did. If something had shot her, he would have bolted, and more quickly than any of these people would have suspected a man of his size to move. When it came down to saving his own skin, no one could be faster than Doctor Eggman.

He crouched down close to her as he peered at the carnage that he hadn't seen before. This side of the building gave the impression that there wasn't very well trained soldiers on the other side as there were only two of them left. Pity for them. They should have had better training.

Eggman would have never suffered such casualties. Nope. Never.

"Is a distraction what we need?" Eggman asked, his eyebrows raising almost in surprised before a grin took his face. "I have just the thing." Eggman was nothing if not always prepared for any task at hand. He drew out of his pocket another one of the bugs and set it to the ground. It immediately stared crawling towards the croc, as if read their minds on what needed to be done.

Of course, it didn't. If Eggman had mind-reading technology, he would be using it for worse things than mind-reading bugs.

Sami kept her eyes on the croc while Eggman's little bug went towards it. By now, it had devoured most of the guy it had been munching on and was almost ready to seek out someone else to eat. That was until it saw movement heading towards it. Dropping what remained of its prey, the creature turned, snorted and lowered itself so it was almost at eye level with the bug.

It then opened its massive jaws and roared, causing the soggy ground it was standing on to shake. The two men who had been bickering fell silent. Not getting the response it wanted out of the tiny little bug, the croc moved to stomp on it. Before its foot came crashing down, there was a bang.

Down it went, falling on its side, with a clean shot through its head.

"Fuck." One of the men came crawling out of his hiding place, his friend coming out not too long after. He ran over to the dead croc and nudged it with his foot. "Fuck! That was the prof's prized pet! He's going to experiment on us next when he finds out about this!"

"We'll just blame it on some other guy," replied the other man, clutching his gun. He was looking around, trying to figure out where the shot had come from. Having taken out her main target, Sami had her rifle trained on him now, just in case.

"Look around! We're the only two left! There's nobody else to fucking blame!" The first man's voice became louder with each sentence. "Everyone's dead, the lab's destroyed and the clones are probably all gone by now! And we got NOTHING TO FUCKING SHOW FOR IT!" Picking up a piece of scrap metal, he started screaming and swinging it against a piece of the croc's armor.

The surviving intruder who wasn't currently losing it spotted Eggman's bug. "Stop that and come here," he said, crouching by the tiny critter to get a better look at it. But the other guy ignored him and yelled profanities at nobody in particular.

Ohoho, so their plan had been successful. Eggman knew it was only that way because he had his little bug robots on him. If not, there was no way this soldier woman would be able to pull off getting the distraction that she needed to be able to shoot the croc out. He was also capable of shooting it himself - even if he wasn't really to risk his own neck if he was by himself - so clearly this victory was mostly on his shoulders.

She probably deserved... a pat on the back. She was going to have to get it somewhere else, though. He wasn't fond of touching people when he didn't need to.

One of the men left seemed to have noticed his bug, so Eggman pulled out his tablet and pressed a button on it. The bug detonated right then and there, leaving no more than small fragments of dust that one wouldn't be able to use to identify what it was or how it was built.

It didn't do any damage since it wasn't built for that, but it did leave the investigator with a fine layer of dust over him. Eggman had to hold back his laughter at the sight.

So, what now?
