As the brightening morning sky swept away the remnants of dawn, the hoverbike tore across the desolate ground. Shades concealing his eyes, the rider stared ahead. His two closest friends were tucked into the sidecar, enjoying the wind as it blew past their faces. The bike's engine and hover systems rumbled and hummed as they worked to keep the machine running smoothly.

The Trainer and the two Pokemon remained silent.

Wes had to get away, even if it was for just a few hours. There was just so much he had to think about and he couldn't sleep for any longer with it all tossing and turning in his mind. So he had a quick breakfast, scribbled a note that he was going out for fresh air, then got Umbreon and Espeon into the bike's sidecar and away they went. They headed straight for the place on the Western Continent that was closest to the arid landscape of Orre.

It wasn't exact, but good enough.

Deciding he had enough of going straight, Wes leaned into a curve, sending the bike into a new direction. Before he had to go back to his life here on this planet, he wanted to clear his head. For him, riding his bike off into an open landscape with no destination in mind was, in its own way, therapeutic.

Sometimes, a man needed a break. Even an admiral.

Hackett had left the Citadel. He was only going to be gone for a total of five days, without an escort. Any longer and his troops were supposed to send a search party out to look for him. A small part of him - the small, devious part that had been the teenager who helped pull pranks on his fellow recruits - thought it would be interesting to not return on schedule, just to see if they would be able to pull off what they were supposed to.

But, he had thought against it. Even if it was a test, if he had gone missing, no one on the Citadel would ever let him leave again.

And, sometimes, a man seriously needed a break.

"Uncle Steven, look!"

Hackett turned from where he had found shelter from the sun under a rock formation to where his charge, Arc, was pointing with one of his small stubby star arms downward. It was hot outside, though he was lucky to have decided on a space suit as oppose to his uniform for the day, as it was made to withstand many extreme temperatures. The sun on this planet was nothing in comparison.

"What is it?" he asked, going to join Arc by the cliff face. He instinctively reached for his gun, though he didn't draw it.

"Someone's riding a bike!" Arc said, excitedly. "And, it's floating!"

Hackett frowned. The bike was floating... in a way. Half of it, at least. It was interesting; he had never seen one like it.

When a rock formation appeared on the horizon, Wes planned to simply pass right on by. He did so, but as he caught a glimpse of who was using it for shelter, he was caught by surprise. "Is that a Luma?" he called to the twins in the sidecar. They both looked behind them briefly before answering in the positive.

What was one of Rosalina's kids doing all the way out here?

Curious, Wes turned the bike around and went back the other way, passing by the formation again. This time the bike was slightly closer to the rocks and he had a better view. Yeah, definitely a Luma, although he couldn't recognize this one. By now, he could tell apart most of Rosalina's family - it was pretty much like telling apart Pokemon from a group of the same species. He just had to look at individual features - little quirks that set one apart from the others.

This one was with a guy in a space suit for some reason. At the risk of looking a little too suspicious, Wes let the bike race along for a just a bit longer before he turned back again for a third look.

The bike got closer to them, and Hackett was able to make out the details of it. To him, it looked like a piece of junk and the sort of them that had been more common place on his home planet decades and decades before he was even born. One would never find something built that way unless they were going into museums in certain countries.

But, then again, he had seen such things as being common place still in other worlds. He shouldn't have been too surprised that there were functioning ones showing up. It was still an odd choice for a bike design. He didn't find it aesthetically pleasing. It was, to him anyways, sort of hideous. He hadn't been raised in the nicest parts of his hometown or anything, but maybe the slicker designs he was used to growing up made looking at something that seemed so bulky not as appealing.

Not only was it bulky, but it was circling around, as if it had noticed them looking down on it.

"The rider sees us," Hackett said to Arc, who looked at him curiously before looking down at the bike again. It might have been too obvious to some, but Hackett had spent a lot of missions where he had to pay attention to these details. It was good that all that desk riding hadn't made him completely useless.

"Oh," Arc said before he floated out a bit. "We should say hi then!"

Hackett felt a twinge of alarm. "Arc-"

"Hello!" Arc called down to the rider, waving his small stub arms. Hackett winced. Sometimes, he forgot that Arc could be reckless like a child. The last person he had dealt with that was reckless Shepard. But, Shepard always got good results, even if gunfire started flying.

Hopefully that wouldn't happen. Hackett liked to believe that he personally wasn't reckless. Sometimes, though, it got the better of him. Spending years as a field soldier would do that to someone. At least, his back wasn't aching today if a fight did break out. Medigel could do magical things.

Wes couldn't help but smile. Lumas were, by nature, extremely curious, to the point that common sense didn't always have to apply. In Saturn Valley, they tended to flock towards anything new, shiny, or simply something they hadn't seen much of before. They expected people to be friendly and explain unfamiliar things to them.

Which might not be the safest thing to do, out in a place like this.

Something about the guy who was with the Luma bothered him; he didn't know why yet. Still, Wes slowed the bike down, stopping not too far away from the kid. The bike's engine quieted to a low rumble, enough that it could be talked over.

"Hey," he greeted in return. "Sorry if we startled you. I was just wondering what a Luma's doing all the way out here in the Badlands." It was a dangerous place, and it was pretty far from Saturn Valley, half a world away. Umbreon was watching the little guy with curiosity, but Espeon had his eyes on the man in the space suit, trying to figure him out without the use of his telepathy.

"Uncle Steven, look, they're coming closer!" Arc said, excitedly. He seemed more interested in the bike and the person riding it than the fact that the man could very well be a bandit. Hackett wasn't used to how bandits might have dressed as anyone who constituted as a bandit back home was still dressed in the same sort of manner.

But, the man greeted them in a friendly manner. That made him mildly less suspicious. Mildly.

"Hello," Hackett said in greeting. He reached an arm up automatically and snapped a salute. It was such a common reaction for him, considering he was around soldiers most of the time. It was just a general reaction for them, even though it wasn't something he had to do. As a higher rank - the highest rank - he didn't quite need to do it. "Admiral Steven Hackett."

"I'm Arc!" Arc piped up. "I"m here with Uncle Steven!"

Hackett couldn't stop the small smile that appeared on his face at that statement.

"I'm familiar with Rosalina, his mother," Hackett explained to the younger man. "Arc took a liking to the Citadel when they came to visit, so he's opted to live with me."

"Living with Uncle Steven on a space station is the best!" Arc piped again.

So... Arc and Uncle Steven. Or rather, Admiral Steven Hackett. The guy who was currently in charge of the Citadel. Wes had heard of him, and just knowing that he was right here in front of him made him both a little wary and concerned. Encountering people with authority almost always gave him that feeling.

"I'm Wes," he replied, pushing his shades up from his eyes and onto his head. For a moment he was worried about giving out his name - people have been after him since Calamity ended - but he ultimately decided that it was okay. Likely Hackett wasn't one of those people; this guy had far more important things to do than trying to catch Victors for bounties. "And these two are Umbreon and Espeon." The twins piped up with friendly greetings of their own.

"I've been helping Rosalina with a certain project," he then explained, "so I've been seeing her and her family a lot these days." It started because of Lloyd, but Wes found that he wasn't just helping out because of him. The Trainer really did enjoy working on the project, building and maintaining vehicles, testing them out on the track. And just having someplace to go, being with other people and getting out of the Axolotl for a while.

It gave him something to focus on, which kept him from constantly worrying about current events and what his enemies might be up to when he wasn't hunting them down.

Wes? Hackett had a file on a man who went mononymously by that name. He had been unsure of it it was because he didn't want to be address by a surname as well or if he simply hadn't had one. Hackett had come to the conclusion that there were certain worlds that simply didn't use last names. That was the case with many of the alien species he knew, as their naming conventions weren't the same as humans. Even in human history, there were several points in the varying parts of the world where no one had one, unless they were nobility.

But, was this the same Wes he had a file on? It had been made before he had gotten here, in relation to the event called Calamity that had taken place within the first few months of the world's creation. Was this the same man? Or was he someone different? Hackett had known a few people by that name - a boy he knew on the streets of his hometown, a cadet a few years younger than him, a civilian who only liked being addressed by Wesley - so it wouldn't be all that odd for there to be multiple people by that name here.

"You know Mama?" Arc asked, surprised. He floated close to Hackett's face and whispered, "He knows Mama."

"Yes, I heard," Hackett said, his lips quirking in a smile. He looked over at Wes. "Have you been there recently? Are they doing well? I, myself, haven't had to opportunity to go by there in a few weeks."

Wes allowed himself to relax, if only a little. Admiral or not, a guy who was in the company of a Luma couldn't be bad, and it was nice to talk to someone new about a topic that wasn't too serious. They were still out in the middle of nowhere, but he was used to having conversations out in places like this, sitting on his bike.

"I've been there just a few days ago," he replied. "They're doing well. Rosalina found more of her kids." Wes wasn't surprised - more Lumas showed up on the planet every once in a while, part of the neverending arrivals sent here by the Goddess. In one way or another, they made their way to Saturn Valley, where they stayed.

Arc seemed to be one of the few exceptions.

Umbreon piped up with a remark and Wes glanced down at him. They stared at each other for a moment, before Wes sighed. "Okay, okay." He looked back at Hackett and Arc. "She made cookies that day. They were really good."

The Dark-type looked pleased when his Trainer said that. Wes shook his head, but he smiled slightly nonetheless.

Hearing that Rosalina was doing well and she had found more of her children who had been forced into the world warmed Hackett's heart. He saw Rosalina as a friend - maybe one of the small few he would even call a close friend in this world - and it felt good to know she was doing alright. He wasn't the best at keeping in contact, but he made a mental note to call her when he next had the chance.

One of Wes' Pokemon also deemed it into to give important. This little statement seemed to delight Arc as he squealed and went straight for the Pokemon's face.

"Mama makes the best cookies!" he said, jovially. He looked back at Hackett, who nodded.

"It is true," he said, a smile touching his eyes. He looked back at Wes and added in a tone that was sure to please his young nephew, "I've been all over the galaxy, and I haven't quite made a soul who was able to make cookies the way Rosalina does."

Arc was definitely pleased with that. He let his pleasure show for a moment more before he looked at the two he was near. "You're Pokemon?" he asked, quizzically. Arc hadn't seen many Pokemon, though Hackett would have recognized them as such as he had a database on his computer on the Citadel.

Umbreon voiced his agreement about Rosalina's cookies when he had found Arc rather close to his face. Espeon agreed too, a touch of amusement lighting up his eyes. Then Hackett spoke in a way that Wes hadn't been expecting from an older, high-ranking official of a military.

Hackett was fond of Arc. And Rosalina too, it seemed.

"Her baking's really something, all right..." Aden's was really good, too, but there was just something about Rosalina's. Maybe it was her experience. She certainly would have had plenty of time to perfect her recipes and techniques, and it was clear that she enjoyed baking, especially for her family and their guests.

"Yeah," he replied when Arc asked about the twins. Wes switched off his bike's engine; what remaining sound died away. This prompted Umbreon and Espeon to slip out of the sidecar - both of them started to stretch now that they had the room. "They're Pokemon. I'm a Trainer, and these two have been with me for as long as I can remember."

It was almost an odd thing for Hackett to have such a normal conversation with someone who wasn't in his care. By that, he meant that he rarely had conversations that weren't involving a mission with anyone outside of the Citadel in a while. Most of the time he had these conversations with the people who lived on the Citadel, and, in a way, these were business too, as it was his business to make sure they were living good lives.

Hackett always took his job very seriously.

But, right now, he was focused on how excited his nephew was to meet some Pokemon, who he could talk to.

"If you're Pokemon," Arc said, floating between Umbreon and Espeon, "can you do fancy tricks? I heard Pokemon did fancy tricks."

The corner of Hackett's mouth quirked into a smile. He knew that Pokemon weren't quite doing fancy tricks, as that wasn't really the proper term to use, but he knew exactly what Arc meant. He, himself, was curious to see what the two were capable of doing as well.

Fancy tricks? Some Trainers - and their Pokemon - would be offended by those words. Wes didn't care, honestly. It was exactly how most curious young kids would phrase it, even those from the world he and his Pokemon came from. Not really something to get angry about. Anyone who did should probably get their priorities straight.

The twins looked at each other, then a soft purple glow appeared around Espeon. The same glow appeared around Umbreon, and then the Dark-type started floating up in the air. Umbreon didn't look bothered by it at all.

"Espeon's a Psychic-type," Wes explained. "Umbreon's a Dark-type, so he's normally immune to psychic abilities. But these two are twin brothers... their close bond allows them to do stuff like this." Espeon had some trouble communicating telepathically with other Dark-types, but he was able to contact Umbreon just fine.

Umbreon pretended to run through the air, even though he was now just levitating in place, a couple of feet off the ground.

Hackett was interested in seeing the moves that the Pokemon knew. He probably had a better understanding of what they were capable of in comparison to Arc because he had been able to read up on a lot of information regarding Pokemon, but he hadn't seen much of it in action personally. A few vids, but that was about it. Seeing it in person would be a new experience.

While Hackett maintained his rather composed stature, Arc wasn't. He squealed with delight once he saw Umbreon raised out of the car and was essentially walking in mid-air. He knew that Espeon was the one doing it, and that floating shouldn't be so impressive since he was able to do it and it was his basic form of travel, but it still looked so cool to see.

Arc floated around Umbreon and even underneath him, as if checking for any secret tomfoolery, but he, of course, found none.

"Can you do another?" he asked, excitedly.

Espeon nodded and suddenly, Umbreon vanished. He was out of sight just long enough for Arc to probably wonder where he had gone, but almost as suddenly, Umbreon was standing right beside the Luma. The Dark-type cheerfully asked what the kid thought of his friendly Feint Attack.

Wes smiled as he watched, but something caught his eye as he looked past the group. Something white... tails? A lot of them, unnaturally bright under the morning sun. They quickly disappeared behind the rock formation they were currently beside.

"Thought I saw something," Wes said, pulling the key from the ignition and stuffing it into his pocket before climbing off his bike. "Be right back." As he headed towards the rocks, his curious Umbreon went to follow him. Calmly watching, Espeon remained where he was, sitting beside Hackett and Arc.
