When Holland knew he was going to head to Briggs to try and figure this whole key business out, this had not been how he thought it was going to go. He didn't think he was going to have to deal with a whole bunch of snowmen.

"Magical snowmen," he muttered to himself, hunching his shoulders up against the wind that blew. "What a load of crock."

"You're telling me," the soldier who was near him muttered back. Holland couldn't help the lopsided grin that appeared on his face then, though the cold almost froze it right off. He really should have brought a scarf with him.

At least, the snowmen hadn't come about yet. There was blowing snow everywhere, but the soldiers of Fort Briggs would be able see them coming before they were able to get within sight of it. Holland wasn't sure how, but he thought they probably had hidden mounds in the snow somewhere, places they could use to spy out anyone approaching the fort.

Either way, it meant they had time to prepare for the oncoming attack. However you were supposed to prepare for something like this.

Holland wasn't even sure, but he hoped it would happen before he froze his arms off.

Rosalina had been to the College of Winterhold before. It was a charming little place, inhabited by interesting people. This was, however, her first visit to Fort Briggs. Some of the soldiers had been startled when she flew in - even more so when she had warped from one part of the fort to the other to survey the area - but they dismissed it as normal. This was a strange planet they lived on and they were preparing for an attack from magical snowmen.

Like every other day in Briggs, it was snowing. Rosalina was wearing a winter coat over her dress, as well as a hand-knitted scarf and a pair of gloves. The wind still brushed against her face, but she barely felt its chill. She scanned her surroundings for anyone who might be familiar to her, and only found one - a friend of a few friends of hers, standing next to one of the fort's soldiers.

She studied them for a moment, then she made her way over, leaving no footprints in the snow. "'Magical' may mean a great deal of things, yet I would still try the basics first, Mister Novak," she said to Holland. He hadn't said anything out loud and Rosalina couldn't read minds, but she had a good idea of what he was thinking just by looking at his face. She held her hand out, and a colorful weapon appeared in a burst of stardust, hovering just over her palm.

"And direct heat," she added, offering the flamethrower to him, "is the best way to get rid of snow. We might as well try that first." If fire wasn't effective, then they would have to try something else. They would have to wait and see. At least using that weapon would warm Holland up somewhat - he looked a tad cold.

Holland didn't know the woman who approached him and the soldiers, but he recognized her all the same. Several members of his own team were friends with her and had mentioned her often. Not to mention she stood out in comparison to everyone else in Saturn Valley that one would have been able to figure out who she is just by a mere description.

"Hey, Rosalina," he said. She clearly knew who he was so there was no reason to beat around the bush and ask for introductions. They had more important things to be doing right now and making small talk wasn't anything more than a waste of time. They might as well get to the grunt of their problem.

"Flamethrowers would be nice," he said. He glanced at one of the soldiers who simply nodded and took off, likely to see if they could locate as many flamethrowers as they could find within the fort. Seeing how much firepower the soldiers he loved to pack, Holland wouldn't be surprised if there was a fair few.

"I'm guessing if that takes them down easily, there's going to be a hell of a lot of them to make up for it," he continued, rubbing at his chin. His gloves felt almost scratchy because of the material, but he ignored it. The Goddess was likely expecting them to use fire, so if they did the snowmen were either going to be strong against it or there would be so many that it wouldn't be as much of an advantage. "We're going to need something else for it."

He thought for a moment before looking at Rosalina. "What do you think. You're more familiar with anything magical than we are. Should we take some of the fighting down to them, or try to beat them from up here and hope they don't make it over the fort wall?" Either way could be dangerous to the people involved, especially when they weren't as familiar with the enemy.

"If the other challenges are anything to go by, then this one, too, is on a time limit." Rosalina gave Holland the flamethrower she had conjured up. She had made it appear so she could give it to him, after all. Besides, she wouldn't need it. If fire was the key to this battle, she already had something up her sleeves. Of course, the Goddess would be expecting that. "If our flames don't melt our adversaries... then there are other ways to destroy a snowman. Luck willing, we shall find a weakness before we spend too much time with our attempts."

It was difficult to be certain of anything when the Goddess was involved. Also, they have yet to see these snowmen. All they could do was prepare the best they could with what little information they knew.

"While it would be risky to meet them before they reach here, it may also give us an advantage." Depending on just how formidable these snowmen were, a team outside the fort could possibly cut down their numbers before they reached it. And those waiting at the fort could see what kind of abilities the snowmen had before they would have to fight them. "I think a team can go out there and see what they can do, as long as they're careful. Venturing too far away from the fort would increase the risk of harm coming to them."

Holland took the flamethrower. He was hoping that it would be more powerful than any of the others that were found within the fort itself since it was magical and all. It was going to have to work.

He listened to Rosalina's words on what their plan of action should be. She suggested it could be dangerous but also beneficial to getting a head start on dealing with the problem at hand. His mind raced through all the preparations that he had seen the fort going through.

"Hey, go down to the entrance," he said. She could probably move faster and get this plan implemented faster than he could. "They have explosives. Not big ones, but ones that should pack enough firepower to cause some damage. Take some soldiers and get them set up just so we can see them from here. That way, we'll know when they're here."

In the mean time, Holland was going to try and see what sort of defense he could implement on the wall before he took the soldiers down to use to the flamethrowers they had.

"Very well, then." Rosalina nodded to Holland, then warped to the entrance. She understood what he was getting at and believed it was a solid idea. A couple of minutes later, she and a few soldiers were leaving the fort. They were all carrying explosives; she hauled her share by using her ability to manipulate gravity to levitate a stack of them. Once they were far enough away, they proceeded with Holland's plan.

Rosalina made sure that all of the explosives were away from the fort, yet within sight of it. The soldiers, who were used to their environment, made sure each site was marked in such a way that they could be seen from the fort while still being hidden by anything approaching from outside. They made sure each side of the fort had some explosives sitting out and away from it before returning behind the safety of the wall.

Taking out a Fire Flower that she had been carrying, Rosalina activated it, her appearance changing slightly as she acquired its power. Then she hovered above the fort, watching the surrounding area as she waited. She was able to see far into the tundra, but there was nothing unusual yet. That meant that they still had time, but that didn't mean they were safe. Things could change very quickly once the snowmen appeared and made their move towards them.

Okay, Rosalina was going down to help get the front line set up for when they snowmen arrived. It was time to get the fort's top wall organized.

If there was one thing to say about Briggs, it was they packed a lot of firepower. With straight efficiency, they got long distance weaponry on the top wall, setting it out in organized rows. They made sure anyone with guns would be set into two rows so while one row was reloading, the next could start firing. It kept them in a steady line so there wasn't any breaks or falls.

The soldiers who went to find more flamethrowers and gone outside. They would be more efficient down below where the flames would be able to hit in the snowmen. Up above, one couldn't quite aim and it was likely the flames wouldn't even reach unless something came right underneath them. No, they needed their most efficient weapons on the ground floor. So, that was where Holland went, exiting through the large front gates.

On his way down, he was stopped by a messenger before he went outside. Stepping through the snow, he went to join Rosalina.

"They're just about here," he said. The soldiers who were hidden in their snow mounds along the way had sent the message via morse code. As if on cue, the snowmen started on the horizon, hurrying at a quick speed - much faster than Holland thought was possible - towards them.

Her aerial survey finished, Rosalina had flown down so she was waiting at the front. When Holland came to inform her of the incoming threat, she nodded and stared out at the horizon, where the snowmen were starting to appear. There were quite a few of them; anyone who had thought of snowmen as immobile figures had never seen ones such as these before.

It wouldn't be long until the enemy was upon them. But first, they would have to get past the fort's first line of defense.

The explosives went off, as planned. They blasted the first of the snowmen to pieces, sending their burning hats, scarves and sticks flying. Over their remains jumped the next wave, pressing on towards the fort they were about to attack.

Rosalina patiently waited until they were within range before pelting them with a barrage of fireballs. The snowmen took the heat better than regular snow did - they didn't melt straight away. Each required several hits before they started to fall apart, so she didn't let up with her attack.

And, there they were.

Holland looked back over at the fort's front wall to see it was lined with soldiers who were ready to take on anything that made it through the front line. If there was one thing someone couldn't say about the soldiers who resided in this fort, it was that they weren't efficient. Within minutes of the news about the chest being here, they were already making plans on how to deal with it. And, there had been no talk of failure. There was only success for them.

Holland remembered what it was like to be that confident as a soldier. He was that before. He was less so now, but he still had faith in his combat capabilities, even if he had never dealt with enchanted snowmen before. He supposed there was a first time for everything.

He turned back to ready himself for the combat. His fingers instinctively went over the flamethrower in his hands, feeling out just what he needed to use the damn thing. When the first snowman came into range, he blasted it. It didn't melt easily, but it seemed like it was doing the job.

"Don't let them circle us!" he called out to the other soldiers as he turned his attention to the next snowmen. Being circled was the last thing they needed; it made them an easy target while limiting who could use what as they were more likely to hit each other.

It was time for battle.

What they needed to do was to keep the snowmen from circling them. One alone wasn't a real threat, but they could be dangerous in numbers. And with numbers they arrived. In all her years, Rosalina had never seen so many snowmen in one place before. She recalled one time that came close, but that was centuries ago and the snowmen there hadn't been attacking her.

Vanishing from the spot she was standing, Rosalina reappeared directly behind a group of the frozen foes and ambushed them, melting down each one after a few hits. She was aware that she was far more durable than the humans here and had an easier time moving about, so she made a point to use those abilities. Her next attack was within the center of a group she had warped into.

By the time she was finished with those snowmen, she caught sight of something different on the horizon.

"It appears," she called over the sound of battle, "that they are bringing catapults." Likely so they could fling giant snowballs at the fort, or hurl themselves over the wall.
