"Yep, that's right," Black said. Large snake thing on the tracks fit just about as much as any other description. He knew that not every world would have one, and seeing one could be a very hard and confusing thing to experience. Seeing cars was probably hard enough, too, and they would appear a lot less complicated to see and explain.

He found it impressive, though. Despite being here only a short time, Varric had managed to do a lot of research. Black hadn't always been the best at researching. That was normally White's job. He did a lot of his battling on mixing knowledge with instinct, but a lot of that knowledge didn't come from him looking stuff up. He learned it on the fly.

Black wasn't sure where an editor or a publisher would most likely to be able to located. They weren't things he thought about. But, Santa Destroy and Neo Domino CIty were still his first bet. Varric would probably want to go through a more "modern" style of publishing, as he wasn't sure if the more "medieval" style that was common in Thedas would get as much done or few viewed favorably. Publishing was one of those things that highly advanced over the years.

"Someone who's a stickler for grammar?" Black didn't know. He had never been one of those. He bet Jack and White would be people who side-eyed people for their grammar, but he wasn't sure if they would like to actually proofread or anything like it. "I don't really know. Sorry. I mean, I can try to help with that, but I'm not the best student." He had only been in school until he was twelve, unlike a lot of other kids. That was what it was like to start your Pokemon journey.

Well, at least he asked. "Don't worry about it. I'm sure I'll find someone." Varric figured that people in the publishing business were around somewhere, just like everyone else. Hopefully, he could find them somewhere close to where he was going to live... wherever that might be. Somewhere far away from the Deep Roads. He had seen enough to that place to last him several lifetimes, and he wasn't interested in poking at the darkspawn if they currently weren't doing anything on the surface.

Poking at darkspawn was a terrible idea if you weren't a Warden. Sometimes it was a terrible idea even if you were a Warden. Corypheus was a shining example of that.

"But I think I've asked enough questions." Varric leaned forward, propping his elbows on the table as he looked at Black. "Your turn. I mean, if you got any. People usually do." Or maybe Black had something to add about this world that would be helpful. Either way, it gave them something to talk about besides everything Varric had to do in order to get settled here.

The sooner he got started, the sooner he could finish, sure. But it wasn't like he had a deadline or anything. Chatting with someone he just met wasn't going affect the time he had in the long run. He was stuck here, so the way Varric saw it, he had plenty of time.

Black was glad he was able to be at least some help to Varric. He was always trying to be helpful to those he met along the way, even if he wasn't able to answer all their questions. Black wasn't sure on things like the publishing business, since he wasn't the biggest reader nor was he in the industry himself, but he had tried to provide information on the topic that he knew. He hoped that was something that would be able to help Varric out in the long run.

But, now it was time for Black to ask questions. He knew he had a few in him. Black had always been a curious person, so it often wasn't too hard for him to come up with something to ask. He just knew he had to not be too overwhelming to someone when he was asking them stuff. Asking too many questions could put someone out. Varric didn't seem like the type to feel that way, but they had just met so one could never really know. First impressions were important, but they weren't everything.

"What kind of cool creatures do you have in Thedas?" Black asked. His voice sounded eager. It might have been because he was from a world with Pokemon - the only world that seemed to have Pokemon at all, unlike some of the shared beasts between worlds - so he was endlessly curious about what sorts of creatures they had elsewhere.

"I mean, besides darkspawn and dragons and bronto," he said. "I know about those. Nugs, too. Are there other things?"

Black asked about something that Varric expected a Pokemon Trainer to ask. The kid was from a world filled with Pokemon, with little space for any other kind of creature. Some of the worlds that the dwarf had read about were like that - they were inhabited by people and a certain kind of creature, and anything else was excluded. It must've been an eye opener to come here and suddenly have to deal with animals that don't shoot fire and ice out of their mouths.

"Besides demons, too. Which I would put in the same category as darkspawn - mean, ugly and not very fun to encounter." Varric shifted in his seat. "Well... you already know that dragons live in Thedas, and they're probably the most exciting creatures to come across, especially high dragons." If you don't mind getting stomped on and eaten. Dragons were mean. A lot of critters in Thedas were mean. "There's a lot of overlap of what we have and what other worlds have. Cats, dogs, foxes, deer, bears. Normal animals.

"Then we got the other critters. Things that are larger than they should be, things that are venomous and will make you die in agony and lastly, things that are bizarre enough that it makes you wonder what kind of shit caused them to be that way." Seriously. "One of those categories should have something cool in it. Which one do you want to hear about?"

Black was glad that Varric didn't find the topic he wanted to talk about weird. He was here researching stuff, so maybe he had read up enough about Pokemon and how their world worked. Besides, he was here in the Pokemon Center. He was able to see all the Pokemon that were coming and going through the Center, and it was pretty obvious that Black was a trainer himself. It was pretty much part of his nature to be so curious.

And, Black had always been super curious. Sometimes, his curiosity got him into trouble. This didn't look like it was going to be one of those days, which was great. Black leaned on the table as Varric explained the other types of creatures in his world. Black had assumed that dragons would likely be the ones viewed as the most interesting. That hadn't come as a surprise to him at all. But, there were other types too, and he wanted to know about those.

Black thought for a moment before he answered. "Bizarre," he finally answered. Bizarre things were always the most interesting. He heard Thedas had some sort of god they worshiped. The Maker? That was what He was called, right? They probably had fun stories about how a bizarre creature came to be and why the Maker would make it like that.

Bizarre, huh? If Pokemon had been living in Thedas, a good number of them would fit into this category. But they didn't have to - Varric could think of critters that would surely interest Black. Maybe the kid'll go out and see them roaming around here.

"There's Sylvans. Sometimes a demon or a spirit will possess a tree, of all things. Then they shape them so they could walk. Most of them will stand still and attack anyone who passes by, but I've heard that some just speak to travelers. In rhymes." Varric couldn't confirm or deny that bit of info. "Sometimes, the tree that gets possessed was burned, and what's worse than an attacking tree? One that's on fire."

Everything's worse with fire.

"We've got gurguts, which are like wyverns, but without any of the charm that the Orlesians say wyverns have. Bogfishers are these round, wrinkly things with pig snouts that live in swamps. They're shy, but they'll kill you if you piss them off. Quillbacks have four legs, but they've got beaks like birds and enough spines to turn you into a pincushion. Lurkers are these large reptile things that can apparently see without having any eyes to see with. And then there are the ghasts."

Which were probably some of the weirdest things out there. "Ghasts are these little green guys that live in caves and holes. They live in groups and collect whatever's lying around - armor, boots, shiny trinkets. Some of them can even use magic, for whatever reason. One that's by itself will run away, but they're fearless when they're together."

Black leaned forward the moment that Varric started describing Sylvans to him. They had trees who were sentient in the Pokemon world - things like Trevenant. They weren't always the most pleasant of things to come across if you were meeting them in the woods on a dark night. They were likely to attack you, or maybe even worse.

Black's parents had a television channel he liked watching at home, which liked documenting paranormal things throughout the regions when it wasn't airing horror movies. There had been some creepy stuff on there that had caught his attention. He would imagine some of the stuff Varric was telling him now would also appear on the channel, though he wondered if the show makers would actually risk approaching.

He wasn't sure. He would hope in this world, people wouldn't be trying to get so close to dangerous things, if any of those things were here too. Sometimes, it was cool learning about it, but people needed to keep their own safety in mind, too.

"Your world sounds really cool," Black said as he sat back down on his seat. "There's so many things I wouldn't have imagined being there." He glanced around the room, taking in the sights of the Pokemon and their trainers. "It's funny because there's so many different kinds of Pokemon, you'd think that I'd be able to come up with all sorts of things in my head about what the other worlds are like." He looked back at Varric. "But, the things I run into never cease to amaze me."

If there was one good thing about this world, it was that. The experience. Black was well aware of the dangers and knew to watch out for them. But, that didn't stop them from being something that interested him.

Varric wasn't sure if he could describe his world as cool, but he supposed it must sound like it was to anyone who hadn't been there. Especially if they were a curious boy who trained strange critters for a living. There were probably a lot of people who were in the same mindset as Black, and they didn't have to be Trainers.

Thedas was... not the brightest place to be represented here. But Varric had seen not only the bad, but the good. The good was what kept him going, in a way. From one crazy disaster to another, he knew - hoped, at least - that the heroes would (somehow) make it through and that the world was going to be saved.

At least for a while.

"The stuff crammed into this world is something, all right..." Varric reached out for a pile of books, running his fingers down the many titles on the spines. Different books on different subjects from different worlds. "Most of us went from believing that there's only one world - one physical world, anyway - to suddenly learning that there's a shit ton of them. There's things out there that people thought only existed in their imaginations. Who knows just how many worlds are out there, and now we're getting the chance to learn more about some of them."

That was the positive side of this whole story, anyway. There was also the unknown dangers, the doom and gloom and all that shit. But again, Varric liked finding the good in things. The alternative, after all, really sucked.

Black knew that Varric was definitely right on that. He was a little different in that he knew there were more than one physical world, but he knew those as planets. His world had the technology that could investigate space and know that there were other planets. Rumours said that Deoxys came from outer space too. He also knew about other planes of existence, though how true they were supposed to be he wasn't entirely sure. They weren't supposed to be the same as his own world though. They were still different.

The Pokemon world could be complicated, but it still wasn't as complicated as the web of worlds that he had discovered once he was unceremoniously dumped into the Goddess' world. It did intrigue him, though, which was why he spent so much time exploring his surroundings. There was always something knew to learn.

"I understand what you mean," he said. "You think you have everything figured out and then something new happens. Even here. We thought the Western Continent was all there was to it and just when we got used to living that way, the Eastern Continent showed up." And, with it came a new set of troubles. There were some weird places in the Eastern Continent, like Silent Hill. But, it also came with the good, as it brought around Saturn Valley and he liked it there.

"We're stuck here at any rate, so we might as well make the most of this place." That was the biggest piece of advice he could have given to anyone who just got here. There was no getting off this ride until the Goddess stopped it herself, so you might as well find a way to enjoy it.

"It's the Goddess who owns the book, but we're the ones writing the story," Varric agreed. And the people writing the story could either make it an exciting adventure, or a boring tale of doing nothing. The dwarf would take some excitement over boredom. They didn't know just how this story was going to end, but hopefully it wouldn't end with the Goddess getting mad. Stories with deities getting mad normally didn't end well for at least some of the characters involved.

"Got anything else to ask? Or you up for a game of cards?" Varric had a deck from home in his coat pocket. There were quite a few games that could be played with them, but maybe Black would be interested in learning how to play Wicked Grace if he hadn't yet. The Trainer was a pretty smart kid, so he'd probably get the basics down pretty fast. Faster than certain people back at home, even.

Black smiled. He liked Varric's story analogy. He thought it was a very good one for what was going on in the world. The Goddess only nudged the people who lived here along, for better or for worse. Other than that, it was up to them to make sure the world moved along to the beat of its own drum. With all the big things that occurred, one still needed to look back and remember that there were several days in between where people were simply living life.

It was a nice thought to think about, actually, in peaceful moments. It was a reminder for when they had trouble happening.

His face lit up with interest when Varric mentioned a card game. Black didn't really plan card games. Sometimes, he'd watch the adults in the Network play a few games and he used to play Go Fish with his friends back home, but he didn't know how to play a whole lot of ones. He bet Varric knew a bunch of them.

"What kind of card games?" he asked, leaning forward.

"Nothing we'll be making bets on today," Varric replied, pulling the deck of cards from his coat pocket. "So don't you worry." The cards were a little worn around the edges, a sign that they had seen many games (and bets) in the past. If he was with old friends, then bets were inevitable, especially as the night wore long and the number of drinks increased. But today he was playing with a kid he just met, so any card games they play were safe.

The dwarf expertly shuffled the deck. "I was thinking of Wicked Grace, which is my usual go-to. Don't know just how popular it is around here, but I'll teach you the basics if you don't know them already." Varric started dealing out their respective hands. "Like any card game, there's a little skill involved, as well as luck. You've got to make good use of the cards you've been dealt, even if they don't stay in your hand for long."

And the same could be said about this world, but any worries seemed far away when you're spending the rest of the afternoon playing cards. It was little things like this that made life much more enjoyable. Those big stories of adventure and trouble at every turn could wait until later.
