Here he was: Konoha, the Village Hidden in the Leaves.

Varric had been to larger cities, but size wasn't everything. Most dwarves didn't look at size the same way that humans did. Surface dwarves, at least. Dwarves living in underground cities liked big buildings and big statues of their ancestors and the Paragons. Save for a few ancient, crumbling ruins, the surface didn't have things like that and a lot of the dwarves who lived above ground didn't really care for them.

That was back in Thedas, anyway. A whole new world meant a whole new story to be told.

What really interested Varric about Konoha was the look and feel of the place. The architecture wasn't like anything he had seen in Thedas. And the way that a lot of the people lived here - as fighters trained in speed, stealth and certain combat arts - was pretty intriguing. There was a ranking system for them, from what he had heard. He should see if he could get some more info about that.

While he had already found a place to stay and got most of his stuff in order, Varric couldn't help but return to the Western Continent to explore some of the areas he hadn't really touched before. Mostly, he was doing research - he could understand a place better by going there and besides, wasn't he going to start a new serial? He hadn't decided on the perfect setting for the kind of tale he wanted to write this time. A village of ninjas - the only village of ninjas on the planet, as far as anyone was aware - might be a good choice.

Despite being shorter than most of the people around him, Varric weaved around them without any problems. Traversing through highly populated areas such as this had never been a problem to him; he thrived in cities. The dwarf hummed quietly to himself as he walked, blending into the crowds as if he was always meant to be there, yet another traveler hailing from a different world. As much as he enjoyed being the center of attention, there were some things that were better done without drawing a crowd.

Mei carefully stepped around the people on the streets in Konoha. She was getting more used to being in large crowds of people, though it was still somewhat unusual for her. She was used to Yomiyama City, where most of the streets seemed fairly empty during the day. It was a small city, after all, but it was the sort where nothing normally went on around there. There were no big celebrities to draw fans to linger around waiting for them, nor were there any large businesses that weren't simply out branches of places that preferred to be stationed in cities like Tokyo.

It helped that she had been to Konoha before. The ninja village had been one of the first places she had ever visited in the world and it was where she had met Lucas. Meeting Lucas had been a lucky break for her, as he was the one who introduced her to the members of the Network. She didn't count herself among their members, but they had taken pity on her and allowed her to stay on the Axolotl. It was nice having a place to lay her head at night.

She had been sent out for chores - Holland had requested she pick something up for him in the village while he worked on the airship's systems - so she carried a small bag with her. He had given her more money than necessary as well, so she would be able to buy things for herself. That was nice of him. Her mother didn't do that a lot.

Her eyes were focused on the names of the shops she passed, sliding over the buildings that were clearly residential, so it wasn't a surprise when she bumped into someone. She immediately stopped, turning to regard them. She was surprised that they were short than she was, seeing as she was small and slim herself, and they looked like an adult.

"Sorry," she said, bobbing her head in apology.

Varric had been doing great in not bumping into anyone, but that had to end eventually, whether it was his fault or someone else's. Not that he would blame anyone for bumping into other people by accident. "Nah, it's fine," he replied, waving off the human girl's apology. "It's a place with lots of people. Happens all the time." Which was why pickpockets liked working in big crowds - they could pretend to bump into someone, then disappear before their target knew any better.

Strange eyepatch aside, this girl didn't look like a crook. She wasn't a pickpocket. Varric could tell just by looking at her. Not a shred of criminal misdeeds on her, but he could be wrong. Sometimes people could really surprise you.

"You were probably looking at the buildings, too. Lots of them to see." All kinds of shops, some of which Varric only had a slight idea of what they were selling. He was still fairly new here, so he was still picking up info on certain things. Food, styles of clothing, all those vehicles people had invented in order get to places faster. If he had never left Kirkwall for anything ever, he would've been more surprised that there were people living in some huge ass city above the planet.

Nice to know that his adventures with Hawke and the Inquisitor had prepared him for some really weird shit. He wondered what they would've made of this world.

Mei was surprise that the man wasn't that bothered by her accidentally bumping into him like she had done. She knew a lot of adults were finicky about children bumping them. Or, about them bumping children and then deciding it was the child's fault because said child happened to be there and adults could do no wrong. One of the reasons Mei could hold a poker face so well was because of her needing one whenever an adult decided they needed to berate her for no reason, like when some old woman yelled at her in the doll museum because the woman had knocked over a doll and Mei happened to be across the room.

It had been amusing to Mei that she had the authority to kick the woman out, seeing as her parents owned the place. She didn't do that though. Instead, she simply stared at the woman until she had left because she was probably creeped out and thought it was possible that Mei was a doll herself. That was a silly notion, of course, but more people came to that conclusion than one would have thought.

"I was," she agreed. "I'm on chores for my guardian and I've been trying to find this shop." She hadn't been to this particular shop before, so she wasn't quite sure where it might have been in the grand scheme of the layout of this place. While she was here, she might as well ask for directions.

Digging into her pocket, she pulled out the paper that had the shop's name on it, scribbled down in Holland's scrawl. She held it out to the dwarf. "You wouldn't have happened to see where this is, have you?"

She was running errands for her guardian, huh? One of the side effects of this planet was that there were now a lot of kids who had been separated from their parents. Either that, or they never knew their parents to begin with. Either way, a lot of adults have been taking them in. The results, like a lot of things on this planet, varied.

The girl pulled out a piece of paper with the shop's name and Varric read it over. "You're in luck. I passed that place not that long ago. It's back that way." He jerked his thumb behind him. "That was before that big group of College mages wandered into the area, though. Must be on a field trip." Why else would so many of those guys leave the comfort of home and trek all the way here from Briggs? Unlike the Circles, he so far hadn't heard any complaints about living at the College. In fact, the mages mostly preferred being there instead of dealing with people who would find one reason or another to yell at them.

"Need help getting there?" It wasn't like Varric was doing something so important that he couldn't help the kid out. Really, all he had been doing was going around, taking in the sights and sounds of the place. He'd still be doing that, even while helping her. Besides, she looked like she wasn't entirely used to these crowds. He, on the other hand, was.

Mei was relieved to hear that the guy had seen the shop somewhere already. She found the note of the mages of the College unimportant. If they were in the shop at all, then maybe it would slow down her paying for things, but other than that, the mages were generally nice. They were students trying to learn their craft, and unless they were trying to be obnoxious teenagers, then they weren't a bother to her. She didn't comment on that, though, nor show it on her face.

"If you don't mind," she said. She glanced around. "The city I'm from isn't nearly this busy." She would have said it seemed outright dead, but for some reason she couldn't think of, it seemed bad to her to refer to Yomiyama City that way. It was like the city had a... a problem or something like it with death. Maybe that was why the city just seemed sad sometimes.

It was also probably why she fit there so well. It was like she belonged there, and she didn't know why. She missed it, if only a little. Mostly, she missed her friends.

"I'm Mei, by the way," she said, bowing her head slightly again. "Mei Misaki."

"Varric Tethras," the dwarf replied. "It just so happens that the city I'm from is this busy, at least during certain times of day." It could get really quiet some nights. Most of the noise during Kirkwall's nighttime was caused by three things: someone completely wasted, someone getting pissed off at someone else, or the gangs that occasionally form for some dumb reason or another.

Unsurprisingly, it was often a combination of those, too.

"Well, let's go. And stay close - don't want to lose you in these crowds. Can't see over anyone's heads around here." Or anywhere, really. Varric started making his way back towards the shop that Mei was looking for. "We get into any trouble, let me handle it. Anyone will believe anything if you phrase it in just the right way."

What he meant was that he could bullshit his way out of a situation. He could present Mei as the heir to KaibaCorp and make it completely believable. Even if the people he was lying to looked it up on their fancy phones. Varric had already developed the type of excuse for when people were trying to look shit up on their own. Living in New Marais had given him plenty of opportunities to perfect that particular kind of fib.

Varric. That was a nice name. It wasn't like anything she had ever heard before in Japan, but she knew there was a fast world out there with so many different kinds of names. Added to the fact that there were so many other worlds attached to each other now, there might as well be several new names that Earth had never heard of. Her first name - Mei - was a very common name. Maybe wherever Varric was, his name was common too.

"Okay," she simple said as she fell into step behind him. She didn't argue with adults. Not very often, anyways. Most of them assumed they were always right, so there was simply no point in trying to say otherwise. Besides, he was right in this regard. The place was busy and they didn't want to lose each other.

And, she didn't want to deal with trouble, either, so if he wanted to handle it, she was more than fine with that. He was probably better at it. Mei preferred avoiding it; that was her tactic.

Mei was able to walk close enough to him without bumping into him while still looking around. This town was quite fascinating. She wondered if Japan ever had true ninja villages. Her lessons in history told her no. The ninjas of Japan were very different from these ones.

Varric knew Mei was following right behind him. He didn't need to look. Years of helping his brother run the family business had given him a keen sense of awareness. Words could do a lot of damage to a business. So did sharp, pointy objects. Businessmen in the Free Marches used both, depending on whichever suited them best and whether or not someone pissed them off.

Although he'd rather talk his way out of a mess than shoot someone, if not shooting them wouldn't lead to any disastrous consequences. After all, you couldn't deal with someone once they're dead.

Unless their body was possessed by a demon. But once that happened, everything's off. Demons were bad news and Varric wouldn't deal with one beyond sticking a bolt between their eyes.

Along the way, he studied the sights and sounds of the ninja village, even though he had passed down this street earlier. Might as well; he was still doing research on the place. "Almost there. The shop's just beyond those mages. Should we wait until they leave or try to squeeze on by?"

Mei didn't understand how anyone could stand living in a place like this. It wasn't necessarily overly crowded, but it was far too busy for her liking. Maybe it was because it wasn't as big as some cities that she thought it was so busy. Neo Domino City hadn't seemed so busy, but it took up far more space. The Citadel had seemed busy when her and Dorumon went there, but she also thought they had gone there on a busy day, not to mention they were in a busy part of the space station.

When they reached the shop in question, the mages were still inside. Mei frowned momentarily.

"Let's wait outside for them to leave," she said. She went to stand off to the side of the door where she was out of the way. This way, she wouldn't be accidentally bumping into anyone who would make a fuss over it. A lot of the mages she was aware of were fairly nice people but they were also scholars and researchers. Scholars and researchers typically possessed a tendency to be really testy. She preferred not bothering them.

After a few minutes, they vacated the store. Mei watched them go before she went inside. It was nice inside and she immediately started moving along the aisles with efficiency, looking at the list Holland had made her.

"Right. Wouldn't want to step on anyone's toes." Some mages were pretty easy to annoy. Non-mages were, too, but those guys didn't have the ability to light people on fire. Sometimes, waiting for a crowd to clear out was the best thing to do. Longer waits could get pretty boring, but at least nobody ended up on fire or stabbed.

Usually.

While they waited, Varric watched the street in front of them. In his head, he counted off the types of people who passed by. Lots of ninjas - they were very easy to recognize. There was a group of young people he pegged as duelists from Neo Domino. An Argonian lady in a dress. Some Nopon merchants, their Armus in tow. Plenty of others. Konoha attracted a lot of people.

Not bad for a village that was right next to the forest infamous for people wandering in and never coming back out. Travelers often avoided a place if the surrounding areas were bad news, but that didn't seem to affect Konoha.

Once the mages were gone, Mei went into the store. Varric followed her - might as well make sure she got what she needed. He liked being helpful, although they might have a problem if something Mei needed was on a high shelf. "So, what are you looking for, anyway?"

Mei looked back at Varric, showing the list that was written down in Holland's messy handwriting. He always came across as the type of person who really didn't care just how his writing looked as long as it was legible. Mei went to school with a bunch of fourteen and fifteen year old boys. Being able to read their written was a feat unto itself.

"They're computer parts," she said. She shrugged lightly. "Or something. I don't quite know everything he uses them for." She wasn't that versed in these sorts of things, and she knew the airship was filled with technology that Mei wasn't familiar with and wouldn't have been found in her homeworld. She was sure the airship was something she assumed was something one would find in the future.

"There's a few of them. He doesn't care what brand they are. As long as they work and are a good price." And, if they didn't work, someone like Holland or Wes would be able to make it work anyhow. That was something she figured out when she got here.

She went back to looking through the shelves, trying to find the items in question.

The handwriting on the list left a lot to be desired, but at least it was legible. A guy definitely wrote it. Varric wasn't thinking that just because it was messy, but there were certain quirks to it. Lot a character. Someone who made sure it was legible but otherwise didn't give a shit how it looked. There were a few other things, too. A person's handwriting actually reflected their personality more than people would think.

Too bad he didn't know much about computers. In worlds that had them, everyone who could afford them used them. But the technology would improve so quickly that a lot of systems were outdated within months. They made certain kinds of work easier, at least until a virus broke out or something like that.

Thedas didn't have computers, but Varric figured he should research and even try out all this fancy technology sooner or later. Much of the world used and depended on it, and he wanted to make sure that he was in the loop.

"Well, I know shit about computer parts. But if they're like everything else, don't get the cheapest one you can find. It'll probably find some way to crap out on you." Inferior materials and shoddy assembly. It was better to go for something that was mid-range. Varric searched the shelves until one of the labels caught his eye. "Here," he said, lightly tapping one of the boxes in the middle of a row. "Fourth item on your list. Not pricey, but not dirt cheap."

Mei's gaze lingered on the items. She needed a few number of them. Was there a basket somewhere? She wasn't sure if she would be able to carry all of them together. She was sure there were bags when she bought them, but she was likely to fumble. At least, she needed to have both hands. She read over the list again and made sure she memorized it. Then, she stuffed it into her pocket.

Mei turned when Varric spoke. "Oh." She came over to read the label. It seemed like the type of thing that Holland would approve of. She picked it off the shelf and checked the box this time. It seemed to be in good condition. "This one works," she murmured before turning to look at the other shelves. After finding nothing else immediately in the aisle they were in, she went into the next one. Here, she located two more of her items.

But, they were a little more bulky and she couldn't quite carry them all at once. She stared at them, trying to work in her mind how she was to carry them. If she brought them to the counter now, would the clerk be annoyed? She felt awkward even thinking about asking such a thing. It was in moments like this one she remembered what an awkward teenager she was.

Some of her classmates would be laughing at her right now.
