Rouge the Bat

This city wasn't that bad. Rouge could say that she had seen worse, and she almost always had.

With the sky turning shades of pinks and oranges, she stepped out of the store. She hadn't gone in there to shop; rather, she was making a delivery. Her client had given her a package in Dunwall and sent her to New Marais. There had been only one time when she had to stop - apparently a small group of people had trailed after her and wanted the package for themselves.

Rouge had dealt with them quickly. She didn't need to know just what was in the package as long as she was paid.

She arrived at the drop-off point sooner than expected and was paid extra for both her discretion and speed. Now she was free to do whatever she wanted, and Rouge planned to make the most of it.

Dinner, and then... maybe a movie? Or she could go shopping, now that she wasn't carrying around that package anymore. And she was staying overnight, so she needed a hotel. A nice hotel. One that suited her tastes.

Instead of simply finding a bench to sit on, Rouge flew up to the roof of a building and sat down on the ledge. Casually crossing one leg over the other, she began to search for information about the city on her phone. Once she figured out where she was staying for the night, she ought to check out the shopping here. Maybe if there was a jewelry store...

Speaking of jewelry stores, perhaps she may have noticed a familiar face staring in the window of their said store. Not so much as to admire the contents of the store, as a friend he knew might have, but it was difficult not to think of said friend when looking at the rather vacant shopping center. It wasn't strange that the store was empty. Jewels were, after all, rather expensive. It wouldn't have been a good idea for anyone to buy jewels as an impulse buy.

Fortunately, or unfortunately whichever you prefer, Shadow knew someone who loved jewels so much that she was more than happy to break a few rules for them.

Honestly, Rouge's love for jewels didn't really bug Shadow all that much, after all the Chaos Emeralds were among the ones the bat valued the most. Still, it at times bewildered the Ultimate Lifeform what the bat saw in these everyday trinkets. Sure, they cost an insane amount of money, but it wasn't like she was going to sell them or anything. She would buy, or rather steal, jewelry for keeps.

But these gems didn't have the kind of power the Chaos Emeralds had, so what was their use?

Even more so, why did Shadow always just stand aside and let Rouge do as she pleased? Well, perhaps a good answer to that question would be that it never got in his way. Even when the two were competing in a free riders competition, they seemed to be working toward different aspects of the same goal. Either way, Rouge lust for jewels never really got in his way, so why let it bother him?

Speaking of the bat though, the hedgehog would occasionally, like right at that very moment, find himself concerned about said bat, as well as a few other people that he'd be even less likely to admit any concern for. Perhaps she even crossed her mind more often than the hedgehog would like to admit to himself.

Shadow scoffed at himself as he saw the stressed out expression on his own reflection. What reason did he have to worry? Rouge and everyone else could take care of themselves just fine. They didn't need his concern, and he didn't need to be concerned. With a bit of a huff, get himself out of his worked up thoughts, Shadow turned away from the glass and made his way down the street, eager to get away from anything that would cause him to "worry" about his teammates.

Okay, she found a hotel - one that still had vacancy and didn't look like a dump. That was one thing off her checklist. It was still a little too early to go there, so maybe she could do some shopping now...

Before she could search for stores to check out, she happened to glance down at the street, and saw a familiar face heading towards the building she was currently sitting on. Rouge had to blink a few times, just to make sure she wasn't seeing things.

Was that Shadow? Rouge hadn't seen him in months. Which was rather unusual... until the Goddess decided to make it an everyday thing in her life. What were the chances? The bat lowered her phone and watched as he got closer to her patch of sidewalk. Well, he looked more or less the same as he did when she had last seen him, although it also looked like he was dwelling on something.

Or someone, maybe.

"My, my," Rouge said aloud as the hedgehog passed under her rooftop seat, "don't you look more pensive than usual."

Shadow found himself glowering. This wasn't working. The hedgehog knew to much about that bat, despite how long it had been since he last saw her. Rouge would love a city like this, and Shadow knew it. Being a lover of jewels and living the lavished lifestyle, Rouge was quite the city person. Personally Shadow wasn't a huge fan of the bright and lime light that cities like these had, but at times he remembered he would have to put up with it while working with Rouge.

Rouge was a great teammate, don't get him wrong. It's just that, well... the bat could get a little side tracked at times.

The moment he heard a voice though, his ears twitched and he found himself glancing around for a few moments. It didn't take long for Shadow to figure out where his long time teammate was, though. The hedgehog looked directly above him and noticed just the bat he'd happened to have been thinking about at the moment.

To say that he wasn't happy to see her would have been a lie, but he wasn't going to let her know that. It took a tad more effort than normal for Shadow to keep the slightest of smiles off his face, but he just barely managed to do it.

Though, judging by how much Rouge seemed to know her teammates, the bat would probably know anyway.

"I would ask what you're doing here," Shadow began as emotionless as he could muster, which was actually quite a bit. Anyone who wasn't Rouge probably wouldn't be able to tell how pleased he was to see his friend. "But that would be stupid. You're probably just mingling around like you usually do." Judging by the fact that there was a jewelry store, which she could find on her own she didn't need his help, he wouldn't be surprised that she'd want to pick up a bit of a souvenir for herself.

But yeah, that's typically how Shadow and Rouge usually greeted each other. Without ever really saying hello. Some may have though that to be weird, but then again, Shadow wasn't known for being normal.

Rouge smiled slyly, stood up and hopped down from the roof, landing on the sidewalk a few feet away from Shadow. She could tell that he was trying to act like them meeting up again wasn't really important to him. But she knew better. The bat played along anyway. "Mingling? I do have work on this planet, you know. Just finished up a delivery, in fact." She needed the funds, after all. She had a home in Neo Domino to maintain, and she also needed to purchase the latest treasure hunting equipment, and neither of those came cheap.

Oh, and she needed funds for jewels, too. The ones that she actually bothered to acquire legitimately.

"But it isn't like you're doing anything important right now either, hm?" Skulking around with that look on his face. He was clearly thinking about something, although everyone but Rouge probably thought he was just being grumpy. Which Shadow could certainly be at times, but he wasn't like that all the time, despite what others thought.

They just didn't know him like she did.

Rouge hopped off the roof, though thanks to her wings and expert flying skills, Shadow wasn't worried about her hurting herself. Rouge wasn't stupid enough to just jump off a building without being prepared for a soft landing. Others may have been shocked, but Rouge probably thought it was fun to freak other people out, even if it was just a little.

Rouge was mature, but she was still a stickler for fun, very much unlike Shadow.

"Well, if you must know," Shadow said with a bit of a smirk, despite not really having anything impressive to say. "I haven't been to... wherever we are for very long. And it just so happens that I was trying to find a bit on what's going on exactly, maybe touch base with you or Omega." Shadow paused for a few moments arching one of his brows. "So, what? You thought I was gonna ask for help or something?"

Rouge knew him enough to know that it would take a ton to get him to ask anyone for help. As far as he himself knew, it was impossible. Shadow viewed himself as the most reliable individual, and if anyone should have been asking for help, it wasn't him. It would take something impossibly huge for Shadow of all people to ask for help from anyone, let alone a stranger.

He had just recently told a kid off for not leaving him alone despite the fact the hedgehog knew full and well that the kid was just trying to be nice. Maybe a normal person would have felt bad, but Shadow didn't. After all, he did give the kid a chance to walk away without a word needing to be said. The kid was just too eager to persist, and he learned the hard way not to pester Shadow.

He was sure Rouge would be proud...

So he just got here, then. Probably had no idea what was going on, too. Typical thing for newcomers. Rouge couldn't blame them, really. Nobody expected to be yanked from their homes and dropped into a completely new world with a bunch of strangers and unfamiliar places.

"Omega's not here, as far as I know," Rouge replied. A shame, really. She could've brought him along the next time she decided to drop by Eggman's fleet. She was sure the robot would enjoy that, although the doctor probably wouldn't appreciate his machines getting blown to pieces.

But she would enjoy it.

"Too bad you don't need help, however," Rouge added, with a smile and a nonchalant shrug. "I've been here for months now, and I've learned quite a bit about this world. You could go find the doctor and ask him, but he's been getting really good at hiding lately." They were stranded on this planet with Doctor Eggman as the only other person from their own world around. And he wasn't an easy person for anyone to find.

Eggman preferred being alone when he wasn't off attacking a city or something similar. But being a Victor gave him another reason to stay out of sight, she supposed. Plenty of people wanted to catch him just for that.

"Hmph."

Shadow smirked as he gave his friend his usual huff before folding his arms, something else he usually did. "I'm afraid I'm not quite as desperate as to ask for the Doctor's advice," Shadow never did find him to be that reliable source of information, unless you count his little amnesia incident. "And if you have a good grasp on what's going on here, then perhaps you have the information I need."

Perhaps the Doctor would be more knowledgeable about this situation, but Shadow knew that Rouge was more trustworthy than Eggman (well except for that one time when he was temporarily teaming up with Metal Sonic). If she already had the information he needed, then there was no need to waste time trying to find a man who didn't want to be found. Still, it would probably be a good idea to find out what the Doctor was up to.

Better add that to his to do list just in case.

"So, what's it gonna take for you to tell me what's going on?" Knowing Rouge, there was always a chance that there was a catch attached to any information she gave, or any favors she made, even if it was for Shadow.

Well, if he was suggesting that she add a catch for any useful info she had, then Rouge would take it. She could've just given it to him for free. As a token of friendship, or something silly like that. But if he insisted. She wasn't going to ignore an offer for something if it was given to her, just like that.

"Let's see..." She wasn't going to give him anything he would find too annoying or bothersome. Shadow was her friend, after all. "I don't have anything right now, but how about you tag along during one of my trickier assignments in the future?" Her work here took her to every corner of the planet and there had been some rather interesting challenges. She wouldn't mind having someone to watch her back during the more dangerous ones, and it would give Shadow something to do for a day or two.

And he wouldn't have to talk to anyone or anything, because she would be handling all that stuff.

"If you don't mind, of course." One assignment for all the info he needed about this planet. That was a very good deal. If he didn't like it, then Rouge would just have to figure out something else. Which was also pretty generous of her - she would've told anyone she was less familiar with to either take it or leave it.

Shadow waited and mentally rolled his eyes as the bat seemed to need to take a minute to think about what it was that she wanted from him. It was true that Shadow didn't make deals with just anyone, not willingly anyway. But it was rather typical of the greedy bat to have to think over her options carefully, see if she could drip the hedgehog dry, or get something out of this that she really wanted. He wasn't really expecting her to be all that greedy on him of all people, but he was expecting that she might have wanted him to try to locate some jewel or something.

What she did instead wasn't quite as expected, though perhaps he should have seen it coming.

So in order to get the bat to give him information, he would just have to join her on mission. So... "Basically what we do all the time anyway?" Not that Shadow was complaining or anything. If that's what she wanted, he'd be more than willing to comply. The hedgehog found himself smirking inwardly, not giving the bat any clues at what he was thinking.

She must have missed him. A lot.

Well, saying that he didn't miss her would be... untrue. But still, though they have their own ways of showing how they cared, being sentimental wasn't one of them. Perhaps the bat might've caught a bit of a glint in Shadow's eye at the thought of the bat actually reminiscing about missions she'd have with Team Dark, or even just herself and Shadow since they did that a lot, too.

Of course, Shadow wasn't actually going to say anything about it. After all, if he was doing something that she thought had a bit of sentimentality to it, he wouldn't want her to bring it up (though she can be a bit of a tease sometimes).

With a shrug, Shadow formed another smirk at Rouge before giving her his answer. "I don't see how I could possibly say no to that." It was as if he wasn't actually giving her anything at all. These were things they would do all the time back at home anyway. "So," he began as he folded his arms as he usually did. "What's going on?"

They were on another planet, that much Shadow knew. What he didn't know was why, and whether or not it was possible to get out. Also, frankly, where they were was less of a concern.

Yes, it was pretty much like their usual work. It was going to be like old times - stealth eventually giving way to chaos, explosions and loot for everyone (especially her). Too bad Omega wasn't here, too. He was going to miss out on all the fun.

Rouge motioned for Shadow to walk with her - she didn't want anyone to listen in, and she certainly didn't want anyone to accuse her of loitering. Also, they were less likely to have people interrupting their conversation. That would be annoying, and whoever dared to do so would quickly regret it. "Well, for starters, this planet we're now living on is made out of pieces from different worlds. It's almost a year old, as far as anyone can tell. New people arrive here every single day, and there doesn't seem to be a way back home."

And those newcomers had absolutely no clue how they got here. Like Shadow, but most of them probably would've asked someone about it as soon as they found another person to talk to. Rouge couldn't really imagine her friend going out of his way like that. Which was probably why she was explaining things to him right now.

Shadow unfolded his arms as he followed his ally's lead, walking side by side with her. Honestly, he didn't care about the reason she had behind having them move around, though he was pleased that it was causing people to stare at them less. Rouge was more definitely the more social one of the three members of Team Dark, and certainly from just the two of them. In a sense, the two of them were quite different in almost every way except for subtlety and ambition.

Rouge was relaxed, but when she wanted something, she was no slouch. Rouge wasn't someone who got in the way either. In any situation she was in, she was in it to win, which was exactly how Shadow was, and something he saw value in.

"Different worlds, huh?" Shadow pondered aloud as he peered to the sky for a moment as they kept moving. A world that was a mix up of other worlds that had existed for a year... Shadow was certain other worlds existed, and upon seeing the kid with his strange animal friends, the hedgehog was already suspicious that they may have been in another dimension or something.

Even in the town they were in at that moment, there were a few of what Shadow could only assume to be those same creatures were walking around.

But what made Rouge so certain that they couldn't get out? If she was here, and Shadow had somehow gotten here a year later, was it possible for everyone to end up here at some point? The Doctor going missing for so long, Sonic at the very least would most likely be suspicious. Would he accidentally wind up on that planet?

He would theorize that, perhaps, more impure individuals were banished here, since the three that appeared here had one thing in common: They had been, or still are, villains at one point or another. It could still be stated that Shadow or Rouge were still capable of doing bad things, even if they typically tended to lean toward the good side. Rouge especially, oddly enough, was a more reliable ally to Sonic than even Shadow was. That is, in term of readiness to be a team player.

Rouge had been there for a year, so she probably figured out along the way that going back was impossible, but he was the Ultimate Lifeform. Shadow never was the type to be satisfied with "Oh golly gee! This is so impossible! Might as well give up now..." Nope. He was the type that looked at the word and say "No you ain't."

But then again, it would have taken a lot for Rouge to just call it quits. Assuming that she even cared to get home in the first place.

Come to think of it, did he even care about getting home? Nah, not really. Unless...

Shadow hummed. "So," Shadow spoke thoughtfully and carefully. "Do you think, perhaps, someone is behind this?" The hedgehog wasn't positive, but a mixed match world from different dimensions, and three people from their dimension made it rather difficult to figure how someone wouldn't have a hand in all this. Like some sort of elaborate scheme or game. Someone playing around with a power that they shouldn't?

"Oh, there is someone behind this, all right." Rouge knew that for a fact. Whether it really was who claimed to be the one responsible, or there was actually someone else pulling the strings, she wasn't completely certain. But they weren't just sent here by mistake. All of this was someone else's doing.

"She's called the Goddess. She shows up once in a while, in the form of a girl. She acts very much like any child who has the power to alter worlds to their liking." In other words, she acted like a brat. The Goddess was in charge of this planet and she knew it, and she didn't hesitate to make sure that everyone else knew it.

This world and everyone in it were like toys to her.

"I don't know where she goes when she isn't here. But when she does show up, you know that something big is going to happen. Months back, she threatened to blow up the planet if we didn't take part in challenges. And she's done it again recently." Rouge was still looking into that matter. She might have to jump in sooner or later.
