High above the city he currently called home, Kirby viewed the buildings down below as he zipped over them.

Lacking anything else to do today, he was taking his Robobot Armor out for a spin. This one came with a built-in Jet Mode, so he didn't have to go around scanning anything just to access it whenever he wanted to fly. He just pushed a button and boom! Instant jet! Then he could go flying around the planet, as long as he remembered to keep an eye on his power supply.

Kirby could also shoot things, but there wasn't anything to shoot up here today. He guessed that meant that if Santa Destroy was going to get attacked today, it wasn't coming from above.

Stubby hands on the controls, he eased his armor lower, whooshing over a bunch of rooftops before climbing up again. Instead of hanging around Santa Destroy, maybe he should fly somewhere else while he had the time. Fly there and grab something to eat. Yeah! And then he could bring it back before Bad Girl came home, so they could eat together.

Just as he decided on that and was about to leave Santa Destroy's skies, he caught a glint of something on the horizon, at the same altitude as he. Kirby peered forward. Whatever it was, it was coming at him really fast! Kirby pulled on the controls and sent the Robobot Armor into a roll, narrowly avoiding colliding with something as it went shooting past.

What in Dream Land...?

It was that time of day that Kay always looked forward to - lunchtime!

Okay, it wasn't exactly lunchtime, but it was close enough and she had just gotten off her work shift. Instead of going home, making herself a sandwich and watching some daytime soaps as that was what was all that would be on television at this point of the day, she was going to go out and find something to eat. She was even going to bring Sami something home as well. She was thinking that Burger Suplex would be a good idea since she wasn't so far away from them.

It was fairly warm out that day, so Kay had the short sleeves of her work shirt rolled up so her arms were fully exposed. It felt so much nicer under the sun that way. She walked down the streets, whistling. It wasn't so busy at this time of day and this point in the week, which made it nicer while walking. She was used to crowds, but it was always nice not having to worry about other people around you.

Overhead, something momentarily blocked out the sun. Kay stopped and looked up, using one hand to shade her view. She caught sight of something whizzing past something else.

"Whoa, what's that?" she said, even if there was no one else around to answer her. Automatically, she started moving in the direction of where that thing was going. She wanted to see what exactly it was!

After all, there was a saying: curiosity killed the cat. But, people often forgot the rejoinder to it: and satisfaction brought it back.

It was a robot. Definitely a robot! That looked like a bird! And not a friendly one like Coo or Pitch or Dyna Blade... Kirby watched as it swooped up higher into the air, then it turned and dove at him, firing some kind of energy weapon from its beak.

Whoa!

Kirby dodged its attack again, flying the armor higher to avoid hitting any of the taller buildings in the city. The robot chased after him. He was pretty sure it wasn't one of Doctor Eggman's. It didn't have the Eggman Empire insignia on it and it wasn't even in the proper colors! It was blue, a few shades darker than the nice bright sky they were flying under.

Facing his newest opponent, Kirby opened fire on it. So much for flying somewhere else. It turned out that he had something he could shoot today after all!

Whoa! Trying to dodge around people willing running down the street and looking at the sky was a hard ass job! Kay was pretty used to going around the streets without crashing into anyone - it was like when she ran through the school hallways except on a much higher scale than before - but trying to look up in the process made it a lot more difficult to pull off. She crashed into a couple of people along the way.

"Sorry!" she yelled over her shoulder to the third person. She was pretty sure he swore at her, but she ignored it. Sometimes, people weren't having a good day and that was the best way for them to express themselves. She wasn't going to judge them for that! As long as they weren't doing really bad things, then it should be okay.

When she looked back at the sky, she couldn't see it.

"Shit, where...?" She glanced around. Oh! There it is! She started running in that direction again. Was she even getting closer? It was hard to tell since whatever it was kept moving. She was going to find out what it was though!

Kirby's shots struck the robot bird in the face and chest. Alright! That didn't seem to damage it all too much, however, and it returned fire. The puffball rolled the Robobot Armor again, returning right-side up just in time to see that the bird was... fleeing?

No, it was diving again, this time targeting the street. It reached out with its talons, and then...

Hey! Snatching people off the street was a bad thing to do! Kirby chased after it as it rose into the air again, clutching its prize. What did it need a human for? Robots don't eat! If it was attempting to use that person for a shield, then it was holding them the wrong way!

Both aerial machines raced out of Santa Destroy's airspace. Kirby kept trying to shoot the robot, but now he had to be careful not to hit the person it had snatched up. Wait... if he shot it down, that person was going down with it! What was he going to do?

Kay kept running, trying to keep her gaze on the thing she saw flying through the sky. She thought there might have been two things, actually. It looked like maybe they were fighting. Maybe. She wasn't entirely sure. It was so hard to see when she was so far down. Did no one else see what was going on up there?! Kay thought the people of Santa Destroy were being way too obtuse over this! They should be more alarmed over what was going on right above their heads!

Maybe they simply didn't care. She heard weird things happened here before, but that didn't mean they should be ignored. That didn't mean--

Kay's thoughts were completely cut off as something grabbed her by the arms and lifted her into the air.

"WHOA! HEY! HEY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" she shouted, kicking. She tried waving her arms as well but they were in such a tight grip that she wasn't able to move them very much. She could hear the people below her gasp, but mostly she just felt her ears pop from the suddenly ascension into the air. She had only taken her eyes off the thing for a second and it had managed to swoop down and scoop her up. She was not impressed!

And she was so high up! What was she going to do?!?

The robot bird was ignoring what its new prize was screaming at it; it seemed more concerned about Kirby shooting at it. It ducked and weaved and avoided the puffball's shots as they flew further and further away from Santa Destroy. Deciding that his bullets weren't doing enough, Kirby switched to his missiles.

One such missile struck the bird in the leg, causing it to unwillingly loosen its talons on that foot. It still had a grip on the girl with its other set, though.

Kirby pressed a button his dashboard and the Robobot Armor expanded, becoming a jet several times its original size. Distracting the bird with a barrage of exploding missiles fired in front of it, Kirby swooped in, flying right underneath it. "Hi!" he called up to the girl, waving one stubby hand. There was now a seat behind his that she could drop into, if she could get herself free from the bird's other talons. He had even lined his jet up properly so she could just fall into that seat. There were matching goggles for her to wear, too!

Because she'd probably want to protect her eyes. Kirby hadn't even used the bulk of his missiles yet and if that bird didn't let up, there was going to be a lot more explosions!

This was insane! Kay kept struggling, but the thing was holding her too tightly to be able to do anything at all! It was clear it was fighting someone, though it was hard for her to get a good look at the other due to all the swinging around that was happening to her. She let out a small screech when that other someone hit her captor with a bullet - a missile? - but it caused it to let her right arm go.

This other someone turned out to be a pink puffball piloting something. Oh, but it looked like he had an extra seat for her!

Kay reached into her pants and pulled out a switchblade. It was probably something she shouldn't have been carrying, but she was anyway. It came in handy while she was working, so she really didn't see a problem to carrying it around with her.

She flicked it open and slammed it into the thing's other leg. It shrieked and released her, dropping her neatly into the seat.

"Hi!" she said brightly to the puffball. Oh look, goggles! She picked them up and put them on. Nice, they even fit right.

The girl landed in the seat. Great! Smiling, Kirby immediately zipped out of the range of the robot bird, which now raced after the jet, firing energy beams from its beak. Since he wasn't sure if his passenger had buckled herself in yet - humans were always falling out of things, for some reason, so they needed straps - Kirby didn't send the Robobot Armor into rolls as he dodged the attacks. Instead, he just ascended and descended quickly; that seemed to be doing the trick.

Until the robot let out a screech so loud it caused Kirby to flinch. It was answered by a chorus of equally loud screeching, and soon the sky was filled with identical robots. And all of them had their eyes set on his jet! Kirby dodged the flock as best as he could, opening fire with his missiles whenever he got the chance. They sure were in hot water now!

When he nearly got clipped by one of the robots, Kirby pressed another button, loading a dashboard with weapon controls for the seat behind his. If they were going to have any chance to make it out of here without getting shot down, then the girl was going to have to handle the shooting while he focused on flying. Hopefully, she had experience with missiles!

Kay reached for the straps that helped keep her in place. She'd been in a few different sorts of vehicles that had similar seat belts - ones that were different than the sort you would find in a car - so she was able to get them in with little difficulty. She tested them out to make sure that they were secure.

"I'm strapped in!" she announced, just in time for more of the bird robots to show up. "Whoa!" She wasn't expecting to see more of them! Where did they all come from? Who even made these and why were they in Santa Destroy? There were so many questions about these things that Kay really wanted the answers to, but she didn't think she was going to get any of them. Not yet, anyways. Maybe if they got shot down.

Speaking of shot down...

It looked like Kay was going to be in charge of the shooting. All right! This was something she was familiar with!

"Don't you worry!" she called to the puffball. "I got some shooting experience!" This couldn't be all that much different than shooting off a tank's weaponry. She would get this. Within moments, she was firing as if she had done it all her life. Yep, differently not too different!

Okay, okay! With his pilot skills and her shooting experience, they could totally do this! Kirby let her have full control of the Robobot Armor's bullets and missiles while he focused on making sure they didn't get shot out of the sky. Many of the robots had resorted to dive-bombing them, so he threw the armor into a roll, descending further and further with each turn.

Once they were out of range of all those sharp beaks and talons, he leveled off and ascended again, weaving through energy beams as they rained down around the jet. One by one, the birds fell out of the sky, but there were so many of them that it didn't feel like they were making a lot of progress. Where did these things come from, and why were they here?

Was he overlooking something important? Kirby would admit that he did that, sometimes. What didn't help was that these robots were all over the place, screeching and attacking them!

If it wasn't for those robot bird things clearly trying to hard them, Kay would have thought this was kind of fun. She shot one of the birds out of the sky and grinned, a big one that lit up her face. Nah, this was definitely fun. She didn't think they were in any real danger here, not yet anyways, and so it wasn't odd of her to think this was kind of enjoyable. It reminded her of arcade games, the kind that came with guns that you needed to aim and shoot at the screen. She played a lot of those; the video game club at school even had one in their club room that they let her play sometimes. That coupled with her tankery experience meant she was barely missing any of her shots.

But, there were other things they needed to worry about too. The robots almost seemed like they weren't going to come to an end, which meant there was something they needed to do that wasn't just dodging and shooting them. There needed to be something they were missing.

After Kay shot another one out of the sky, she looked around, a small frown on her face.

"Hey, look at that one!" she said, pointing. "Its design is a little different!" It was hard to tell when it moved, but Kay was pretty sure she was correct on that one!

Wow, this girl barely missed any of her shots. She was pretty good! Kirby couldn't watch too much because he was trying to make sure they didn't get shot in return, but he felt like they were going to get through this. If they could figure out how to - it almost felt like every single one of the robots that they shot were instantly replaced with a new one.

Then the girl pointed out one of the birds and Kirby looked at it. Yeah... that one did look a little different! It had a different beak, different talons, and its color was a little off. That had to be the key!

Engines roaring, Kirby flew towards it. The robot noticed them and took off, ascending higher and higher into the air. Then it turned around and opened fire on them, forcing Kirby to dodge its attacks. They had to get to that one! He sure hoped that the girl was able to shoot it down!

It looked like the plan was going to be to try and shoot the robot bird that was the odd one out. That was probably the best plan they had, anyways, as they couldn't seem to figure out what else there was they could do. If it didn't work, then they would simply try to find something else they could do. There was no need to figure out all sorts of things if all they needed was the one.

"Ready when you are!" she called out to the puffball. She was already trying to get her sight in, focusing only on that one bird as they dodged and ducked around the others. She would worry about shooting anything else once she had gotten her target knocked out of the sky.

Once she was lined up, she stared through her sight for only a moment before she fired. Her shot hit it directly. To make sure she did damage, she hit it again.

"Bull's eye!" she shouted pumping a fit in the air. "Did that do it?"

They got it! Kirby watched as the bird dropped from the sky. And so did the others, as if their power was suddenly cut off. The puffball peered over the side as he watched them fall...

The lead bird came back to life.

As the other robots fell towards it, they broke into their many pieces, collecting on their leader's body. With a roar, it rose back to the same level as the Robobot Armor, casting it in shadow as it loomed over it. Kirby stared up at it, a small frown on his face.

Wow, it was huge!

As the newly-formed boss lunged with talons large enough to ensnare and crush the Robobot Armor, Kirby rolled it out of the way and began to circle around, narrowly avoiding getting impaled by a razor-sharp beak. Okay, time for Round Two! It had to have a weak point somewhere!
