The rush of air and trapar past the rocky slopes sent pebbles clattering downhill.

Reaching the bottom of the mountain, Wes leveled off, adjusting his stance and taking note of his balance, staying as relaxed as he could possibly be. So far, he hadn't crashed his lift board into anything today and he was trying to keep it that way. Damage meant free time spent on repairs instead of practice. And he had promised Holland that he was going to practice whenever he could.

Practicing lifting was like practicing riding a motorcycle. Balance, acceleration, braking, tricky maneuvers... the possibility of crashing and getting injured, or worse. But a skill couldn't be improved upon without doing it, and Wes had lost his fear of falling years ago.

Physically falling, at least. Still working on the other kind.

Wes drifted along the ground, keeping his board about a foot above the grass. Raichu pulled up beside him, matched his speed and made a comment that sounded positive. His newest Pokemon was his usual companion when he went out to practice surfing on trapar waves. Flygon was usually out as well, including today, flying higher and on his own course. Yet the dragon was ready to swoop in and catch his Trainer if he fell from a dangerous height.

Trying to get a sense of how the trapar waves were from how they ran underneath the board - he didn't have Holland's special ability, so he had to make do - Wes opted to surf higher, gliding back up along the slope of Mt. Moon. Raichu quickly followed, riding his tail up into the sky. They normally practiced away from the front of the mountain, where there was more space and less questions from curious Trainers.

Well this hadn't exactly been what Kellyn had been expecting. Riding on a Staraptor he had captured recently, he observed the cities and people from high above. Sure it hadn't been a very detailed observation, but it was enough to be able to scout out possible places to explore, to be able to have something other than just empty space on his styler's map even if he didn't know what the locations were just yet.

Now on the coast, Kellyn really hadn't been expecting to see mountains. Or rather a singular, rather familiar mountain. While he himself had never been to Kanto, he had seen pictures, and because he had a photographic memory, he knew this place looked exactly like Mt. Moon. It threw him off pretty bad, but he still figured he may as well check it out to see if his assumption was correct.

Unfortunately he didn't see the person on the... Whatever that was until they were on a collision course. "Staraptor! Evasive maneuvers!" He called, lurching to the side and avoiding the near wreck as he had Staraptor make an emergency landing. His shaken Friend Pokémon piled off the bird and Kellyn made sure none of them were hurt. Flareon immediately stuck close to Kellyn, the timid fire type more frightened than the other three by far. He picked up the little flame pokémon to comfort it.

Other than Pachirisu chittering angrily and clinging to Kellyn's shoulder, they seemed alright, and none of them were injured. That just left the one they nearly ran into... Kellyn turned his concerned eyes to the sky and looked for any sign of the strange boy. He hadn't gotten a very good look at him, but he thought he had white hair. It shouldn't be too hard to find, right?

They had gone quite some distance up along the mountain without mishap, only to nearly crash into some kid on a Staraptor. Raichu cried out in alarm and Wes swerved to the side, very narrowly avoiding the kind of disaster he had been working hard to prevent. After having such a rough time recently, he was trying to avoid getting injured again if he could help it.

And he didn't want anyone else getting hurt because of him, either.

The board slowed in its flight as Wes scanned the ground. Where did they go? It wasn't long before he found the Staraptor, its rider and a bunch of other Pokemon, including some Eeveelutions. The corner of Wes' mouth twitched, almost forming a smile - he had a soft spot for Eevee and its evolutions, a result of growing up with two of his own.

Carefully, he glided down the mountain slope again. There was a bit of a rough patch near the bottom and he worked to steady his board, but he did reach the ground. Wes hopped off and picked up the board, tucking it under his arm.

"Hey, kid!" he called, Raichu flying down to hover next to him. "Are you alright?" Judging from the uniform, Wes had to guess that the boy was a Ranger. This was a first - he had never seen Rangers on this planet before. Wary of newcomers - especially those who might have a problem with him due to his history and reputation - he kept his distance instead of approaching.

Admittedly Kellyn didn't keep up with events outside of Almia and Fiore. Perhaps it was a little irresponsible of him to be so uninformed about other places, but he imagined that they had their own rangers to take care of those areas. Surely he couldn't be expected to keep tabs on every region, that was too much for even him. Either way, he had no clue who this was, and smiled at him, though the distance confused him a little. Why was he staying so far away? Wouldn't it be easier to talk if they were closer?

Oh well, it wasn't like Kellyn couldn't walk. With a friendly spring to his step, he approached the other boy, though his smile turned sheepish as he did so. Yeah! Sorry about that, I wasn't expecting to see anyone else up so high. He slowed to a stop a fair distance away, but not so far that they had to yell. Kellyn would respect his boundaries, but he didn't like yelling just to talk to someone. His little scaredy cat Flareon got comfy in his arms , looking at Wes curiously. Glaceon, Leafeon, and Vaporeon all followed the Ranger on foot, though they cautiously stayed behind Kellyn, wary of strangers as wild pokemon often are.

Pachirisu, however, made it very clear his opinion of this incident and turned away from Wes on Kellyn's shoulder with a huff, his cheeks sparking as he did so. Kellyn couldn't do much to cheer him up while holding Flareon, but he knew Pachi well enough to know he wouldn't ever hurt someone just because they upset him. He did sometimes throw fits, but he never hurt anyone.

Shifting Flareon to one arm, he extended a hand to Wes, "Anyway, I'm Kellyn. Are you alright? No one got injured, did they?" His gaze went to the rather curious looking Raichu, but he didn't comment, simply making sure it was alright was first on the agenda. He could ask why it looked like that later.

Wes relaxed a bit when the Ranger approached on his own, which either meant he didn't know who he was, or he simply didn't care. There was still a distance between them, but now the group was close enough that he could see clearly what the Pokemon were thinking about. The Flareon was curious, but the other three Eeveelutions were wary, which wasn't surprising. The Pachirisu on Kellyn's shoulder was obviously annoyed, and Wes couldn't blame him for that.

"We're okay, just a little surprised, that's all. Sorry for throwing you guys off course." After a moment's hesitation, Wes stepped forward, reached out and accepted the handshake. "I'm Wes. This is Raichu." Smiling, Raichu twirled around in the air and waved, trying to show that he was friendly and nothing anyone needed to be worried about, despite not looking like most of the Raichu living around here.

Wes was still trying to figure out where exactly he came from, but he hadn't bothered to ask. If Raichu wanted to tell him, then he will on his own terms. It didn't matter too much, anyway. Raichu wanted to be here, and that was good enough for him.

Off course? Kellyn chuckled a little and waved it off dismissively, "Don't worry about it! I was just scouting out the areas on this continent and thought I recognized this mountain. It's Mt. Moon, right?" He looked upwards at the mountain, a smile on his face as he did so, oddly positive considering the circumstances. "I've never been to Kanto before, but I've seen pictures. It's nice to know it looks even better up close!"

Turning his attention back to Wes, his smile widened marginally, "It's nice to meet you, Wes. You too, Raichu." He set Flareon down now that he was more calm, and petted Pachirisu a little to try and get him to stop being so bad-tempered about this whole situation. It had just been an accident, and Pachi just had to come to terms with that. Not everything was done on purpose.

Ever since the whole 'Mr. Kincaid' thing Pachi has been a lot less trusting of strangers.

Clearing his head of that unfortunate train of thought, he focused on the strange Raichu in front of him. Of course he wasn't rude or stupid enough to think about trying to befriend it, but he was curious, "He's so cute! Is he from the same region you are?" He figured it was a fair enough question. He had run into pokemon from all sorts of regions already and just because he saw someone with a pokemon didn't necessarily mean they came here with that pokemon. After all, trainers never really stopped catching pokemon.

Realizing that he may be overstepping a boundary due to his overly friendly tendencies, Kellyn lifted his hands, "You don't have to answer if you don't want, I'm just curious is all. I haven't seen anything like him before. Raichu like this weren't common in Almia or Fiore."

"This really is Mt. Moon." Trainers from Kanto who arrived later have confirmed that the mountain had been missing from the region for a while, meaning that the Goddess really did rip places out of worlds just to make this one. Why she chose Mt. Moon, Wes couldn't even begin to guess. It wasn't like anyone could ask her, either. Even if they could, would she even answer?

But Kellyn had quickly dropped that subject for Raichu. Wes glanced at the Pokemon, who shifted back and forth on his tail, easily floating there. "I met him here recently. He's an Alolan Raichu, so I'd figured he either evolved there before coming here, or there's someplace on this planet that causes Pokemon to evolve in the same way." Which was it, though? That ought to be something he looked into whenever he got the time. "He's part Psychic-type, which is why he can float like that."

The best partner to have around for lifting practice, too, if Holland wasn't anywhere nearby.

"I haven't seen anything like him before I went abroad, either. My home region doesn't have much in terms of wild Pokemon." Most of the Pokemon there were brought in by their Trainers. With the exception of the twins and Plusle, Wes had stolen all of the Pokemon he acquired in Orre. But that was a story for another time, if that time came at all.

So far, Wes didn't find Kellyn's questions too bothersome. It sounded like the kid only arrived here recently, and to be honest, Wes was used to people from his world asking him questions. Especially the younger Trainers - they were curious about everything. Where he was from, what it was like over there, what Pokemon he had with him, and how did he manage to catch an Entei. Stuff like that.

Kellyn listened attentively, nodding when he said there weren't many wild Pokémon where he was from, So you're from Orre? I remember reading about it once or twice. Orre having little in the way of wild Pokémon had popped up now and then when he was reading about different known regions. He couldn't say a lot about it other than that small detail, but it's the one that stuck with him as Orre’s defining trait.

Kellyn smiled kindly, I'm from Fiore, but my family moved to Almia. We don't hear a lot about Orre over there, but it sounded neat from what I read. As far as the Pokémon Wes had with him, Kellyn wasn't exactly interested beyond hoping they were well cared for, which he was sure they were from how happy Raichu looked. As a ranger, he was a Pokémon lover in the widest sense. He loved all pokémon, not just some, not a certain type, all of them.

He couldn't deny his curiosity about Orre, though, and before he could really stop himself he mused aloud, Is there a ranger branch in Orre? I don't remember hearing anything about it at the Union, but supposedly Rangers get appointed to several regions.

So Kellyn had heard about Orre, although he didn't know very much about it. Maybe that was for the best. Other regions had mostly positive reputations, while Orre... it was still getting there. Things had improved in the past few years, but it still had a long way to go.

"Things are run a little differently at home. What passes for our Pokemon League would confuse Trainers from the outside, and there's no Ranger branch at all." If there were Rangers wandering around Orre these days, Wes wouldn't know. There hadn't been the last time he was there, but again, things were changing for the better.

"But, you know..." Wes started to say, standing his lift board up on one end. As he let go, Raichu caught it. The amused Pokemon hung on at the top, letting the board swing back and forth a little bit, but he would never let it fall or hit anyone nearby. "Orre would've benefited from having Rangers. Maybe things would've been different." There was a little more weight to that last sentence than Wes had wanted, and behind his smile hid emotions brought forth from thinking about home.

Kellyn could see from the look in Wes’s eyes that he had probably hit somewhat of a delicate subject. An apologetic smile took the place of his previous one and he reached up to hold his partner, the electric type curling up in his arms. ... All regions have their good points and bad points. Being an outlier isn't always a bad thing, he said thoughtfully, Bad things can happen to any region, but there's always someone there to help. Rangers or trainers, anyone.

Kellyn grew quiet as he scratched behind Pachi’s ears. He wouldn't deny that Rangers would have helped, but it was just a fact that they hadn't been posted in Orre yet. Had he known they needed it, he would have requested to send rangers over or even go himself, but now that they were here there was no point in thinking about what could have gone differently.

Things worked out, didn't they? Kellyn asked softly, looking up from Pachi and back at Wes. The blue and white rodent seemed to be in a better mood now and regarded Wes with slight concern. He could see that the other boy was hiding how he felt. There's no sense thinking about what ifs now, right? All we can hope is that the Union sends rangers over.

Pa pachi pa? Pachirisu tilted his head at Wes, now sitting up and looking at him.
He's asking if you are okay. Kellyn translated, offering the pokémon to Wes. Pachirisu had always been the type to want to be close to people. It's why his developing initial distrust of strangers hurt Kellyn a little bit.

Things had worked out for Orre. It had changed and grown in the past few years. Wes knew that. But that last attack on the region had shaken his confidence, mainly because he hadn't been able to help. Circumstances ensured that he wouldn't be able to fight, that someone else had to fight those tough battles instead. By the time he was able to get back out there, the fight was already over.

Orre - stubborn and resilient as ever - recovered. Wes found that his own heart couldn't do so quite as easily, but he had other things to worry about. Especially now that he was living on this planet, far from home.

"I'm alright, thanks," he replied, reaching out and gently scratching behind Pachirisu's ears. Wes wasn't concerned that the Electric-type might give him a nasty shock - he could tell that Pachirisu wasn't in a bad mood anymore, and that his concerns were honest. Besides, getting zapped would be mild compared to some of the other things he had gone through. "He's pretty perceptive. My first two Pokemon are like that, too." Those twins could read Wes like an open book; Espeon didn't even have to read his mind.

Nodding at Wes's observation, Kellyn looked at his partner fondly, "I've had him with me the longest, so he's gotten good at sensing the emotions of humans and other Pokémon." Having Pachirisu with him got him through a lot of difficult captures in his career, and had been a great companion, so the small Pokemon held a special place in his heart.

The four eevee evolutions with him had decided that Wes was not a threat, and having calmed down from the rough landing were now approaching, each at their own pace. Leafeon got the closest to him, but stayed a respectful distance, mostly just curious about Wes's strange outfit. Flareon stayed by Kellyn's feet, and Glaceon disregarded Wes completely, more interested in Raichu. Vaporeon followed behind Leafeon, still seeming wary.

Kellyn smiled at the pokémon, but a concerned expression crossed his face when he noticed something coming towards them. "...Watch out!" He called, lunging and managing to effectively tackle Wes out of the way of a boulder that would have otherwise crushed one or both of them. "Rock throw... from that angle it would be..." Kellyn looked up, seeing a canine like pokémon with red and white fur glaring down at them. "What kind of pokémon is that?" He asked, a little startled by how hostile it appeared to be.

The Lycanroc let loose a howl from where it was perched on the mountain's cliffs and began running towards them. Pachi's cheeks sparked, a serious expression settling over his furry features, "Chi pa! Pachi!" The rodent was looking over his shoulder at the other five pokémon who had scattered in the face of danger, apparently giving orders as he ensured his partner and Wes were alright.

"We have to move!" Kellyn was back on his feet in seconds and offered a hand to Wes, ready to help or protect him if need be.

Pokemon who had been with their human companions for a long time often learn how to sense the emotions of others. Wes wondered how long Kellyn had Pachirisu, but the Eeveelutions had distracted him for a moment. Each one had its own personality, and at least one was still wary of him. Vaporeon likely didn't know who he actually was... but maybe it still knew, in a way. The past could never be hidden easily.

Wes' thoughts lingered on that before a sharp pain at the back of his head alerted him to something else. The next thing he knew, he was on the ground, a boulder slamming into the spot where he and Kellyn had been standing. He was quickly on his feet again, his gaze landing on the Pokemon that was approaching fast.

That Lycanroc was...

"Flygon!" Wes yelled. From the sky dove the large dragon with a Screech, wings nothing but a blur as he plummeted towards the hostile Pokemon. "Dragon Tail!" Just before he would've collided with the Lycanroc, Flygon twisted around and slammed his tail against it, knocking it back up the mountain some distance.

That should buy them some time, but not for long.

Startled by the sudden turn of events, Raichu hovered nearby, still clutching Wes' lift board. When Wes wordlessly motioned to him, the Pokemon teleported away, then reappeared again, the board gone and stashed away somewhere safe. Wearing a concerned expression, the Alolan Pokemon kept close to his Trainer - he knew that was a Lycanroc over there, but he had no idea what its problem was. In contrast, Flygon was angry, and he made sure he was between Lycanroc and the others, ready to shield them from harm. He knew for certain what was wrong with it.

Wes did too, as its very presence ate away at his nerves. "Kellyn..." he said as calmly as he could; already he was feeling ill, but he stowed it away, determined to keep it hidden and deal with it later. "That Lycanroc's more dangerous than you know. It isn't normal." And that Rock Throw might be the most normal thing Lycanroc had in its arsenal. As it came rushing down the mountain again, Flygon readied to meet it head on. Wes focused on it as it came closer, his next command on his lips.

Why here? Why now, of all days?

Well apart from having never heard of this kind of Pokémon before, Kellyn had figured that something was wrong with it. Generally Pokémon didn't attack for no reason. That fact coupled with Wes apparently knowing what the issue is only served to convince Kellyn that Wes had dealt with this type of thing before, perhaps more than just on this world, though he didn't have any way of knowing specifics unless told.

"I'm a Ranger, Wes. Danger is part of the job description." With his piece said, he readied his styler. With how the Lycanroc was behaving, it reminded him faintly of the Shadow Crystal's affect on Pokémon. He balled his hand into a fist and took aim. "Vatonage! Capture On!" At his words, three gems on his styler began to glow, and the capture disc deployed immediately, quickly approaching the Lycanroc.

The Lycanroc growled at Flygon getting in his way, and placed it's forepaws on the ground. A dark haze-like aura spread over the ground and suddenly spikes began shooting upwards from the ground.
Kellyn swiped his pointer upwards so that the capture disc would avoid damage, then took Wes's wrist and tugged him along so they wouldn't be caught in the strange spike attack, which was spreading down the mountain alarmingly fast.

"Staraptor!" Kellyn called, the bird giving a loud acknowledgement in reply. Since Wes was using his Flygon to fight, he figured it would be safer for both of them to ride on Staraptor for the time being. As per Pachirisu's orders, the other four had found places to hide where they would be safe for the moment, so Kellyn was able to focus on the capture at hand.

With a swipe of his pointer, the capture disc curved to loop around the Lycanroc. Being in the midst of an attack, it didn't react until the disc made a complete loop. The Lycanroc snarled and ducked out of the new loop that was forming, though it seemed to buy them time- the attack had been interrupted.

The large bird landed close to them, and Kellyn climbed on, motioning for Wes to follow. Wes may know more about what was afflicting the poor Pokémon, but it was too dangerous to stay on the ground right now.

Flygon shot back up into the air. The dragon circled around, aimed for his target and then launched himself towards Lycanroc, using Dragon Claw to knock it over. Then he glided away before he could be hit by his opponent's own claws, keeping a safe distance away to avoid another Shadow Rave or any other attack that Lycanroc might throw at him.

Wes understood Kellyn's plan to get them into the air, but instead of climbing up onto Staraptor, he took an Ultra Ball off his belt and tossed it, sending out his Braviary. "Don't worry about me," the Trainer remarked to Kellyn as the older, scarred bird landed beside them. "For Snaggers, danger's also in the job description, right at the very top." Anyway, splitting up in the air would give them more maneuverability. As he got onto Braviary's back, Wes noticed how the Pokemon's feathers were bristling, his eyes locked onto the Lycanroc.

Like Flygon, he knew all too well what that Lycanroc really was.

"Be patient," Wes said quietly, lightly patting the bird's head. "You'll get your chance." Braviary nodded and with a stern glance at Kellyn and Staraptor, he spread his wings and took off into the air. The wordless warning was clear: move fast and keep up. Shadow Pokemon don't wait for their prey to prepare themselves.

The bird used Hone Claws while Raichu surfed up beside him. Wes kept his eyes on the Lycanroc down below. Like the Rampardos currently living in the Center, this Shadow Pokemon was running wild without a Trainer, meaning he wouldn't be able to use his Snag Machine to catch it - there was simply no Trainer to snag it from. Kellyn was apparently trying to capture it, but with Lycanroc running around and attacking as it was, any chances of success would be slim at best. They had to level the playing field.

"Raichu, I'm going to need your help." Raichu nodded firmly. He had no idea what was going on, but if his new Trainer needed his help, then he'll have it.
