Wes took shelter behind the scrap of concrete and metal that used to be a wall, the sandstorm raging all around him. A terrified wild Combee was hiding under his long coat, trying to stay out of the harsh weather that would surely tear him apart. Over the howling wind, a laugh could be heard, spiteful and mocking.

Figures that they would end up in this mess.

Following rumors of a Trainer with an extremely aggressive Hippowdon, Wes had ended up in Edge. There he found a Cipher Peon ready to beat up another Trainer after he defeated the poor kid's Pokemon. The ensuing confrontation resulted in a chase into the ruins of Midgar and an innocent Combee nearly getting mauled by the Peon's Shadow Pokemon. Now they were all in this mess together.

The vibes that came from Hippowdon were bad enough. The ones that Wes was picking up from their surroundings - a ruined city of broken hopes and lost lives - were even worse, hurting much more than the sand striking his face. Just being down here was distracting, and he couldn't afford to be distracted now. He tried focusing on the one burning point some distance ahead that was Hippowdon.

That Pokemon was the only Shadow Pokemon he could pinpoint right now. It was difficult to detect others, if there were any.

Having recalled his other Pokemon earlier in order to protect them from the sandstorm, Wes glanced at Skarmory, perched on a nearby wall, sharp talons digging effortlessly into the building material. To the steel bird, this weather was nothing. Orre's sandstorms were much worse and Skarmory enjoyed those. "We've got to get to that Hippowdon!" Skarmory cawed in agreement. "I'm counting on you to lead the way." Wes' shades were protecting his eyes from the sand, but he still couldn't see very far ahead, so he needed to rely on his Pokemon's sharp sight.

Spreading his bladed wings wide, Skarmory took off. After murmuring some reassurance to the Combee hiding under his coat that they would make it out of here alive, Wes followed, plunging into the sand.

Black had been around the block enough times to know trouble when he saw it. And, when that trouble involved Pokemon in some way, Black had an innate sense to know it.

That was what he felt when he entered the ruins of Midgar, the more or less abandoned city that was attached to its twin, Edge. Black rarely came into the ruins, usually finding no reason to go there. It wasn't really a hotbed for wild Pokemon. Normally, one found trouble there in the form of bandits. While Black would deal with them when he needed to, he wasn't always the most equipped to go after them on his own.

Not that he was really ever on his own; he always had his Pokemon with him. But, he also preferred if they weren't being attacked by people with swords and guns.

It was a sandstorm Black found once he got well enough into the area. The sand stung his cheeks as he walked in, and he immediately let out Tyranitar. She stood in front of him, blocking him out from a lot of the swirling sand. He held onto her tail so he wouldn't lose her.

"There's something going on in here," he called out up to her. "Let's find out what it is."

She grunted in response before she lunged into the sandstorm, moving slow enough that Black was able to easily keep up with her.

That guy out there was still laughing at them. Fucking Peon. When Wes got his hands on the bastard, he was punching him in the gut. Hard.

With Skarmory leading the way and Combee still hiding in the space under his coat, Wes silently moved through the sandstorm, getting closer to his intended targets - the Peon and his Hippowdon. There were still no visible signs of them ahead, but they were there. Skarmory's body language informed him that the bird had noticed others nearby, though.

"Who is it?" Wes asked the Pokemon, knowing that he didn't have to worry about the Peon hearing them. The sand swallowed up his words before they could go further than Skarmory's ears. Skarmory cawed and pointed his beak towards where he noticed movement; his tone of voice suggested that whoever they were, they were familiar faces. "Alright. Find 'em."

Skarmory started heading that way and Wes followed. Soon enough, a large and familiar silhouette appeared in the howling sand.

The sand blowing around was cutting. Black would definitely admit - hand on his heart and all that fancy jazz - that he didn't like it. In Unova, there was a desert. Black had been there several times while traversing his home region. Sometimes, the weather there could get kind of bad, but Black normally avoided it when that was the case. One was more likely to run into a wild Pokemon jumping out of the sand than really bad weather that prevented one from being able to see more than two feet in front of their face.

As he and Tyranitar continued through the blowing sand, figures came up in front of them. Tyranitar stopped, growing slightly. Black was able to hear the rumble in her, so he peered around her large body into the sand. He could feel some of it sting his face, but he ignored it. Because he was able to recognize that silhouette up ahead.

"Wes!" he called. His voice was partially swallowed up by the blowing sand and he wasn't fully sure if Wes was even able to hear him. "Let's get closer," he said, urging his Tyranitar forward so they could go speak to Wes and his Pokemon. He kept Tyranitar in between them, just in case he was wrong. Tyranitar would be able to react quickly enough if she needed to.

It was Black. Wes could barely hear him, but he was pretty sure that it was him. The Trainer continued walking until he was able to clearly see Black. With him was the Tyranitar that Wes had caught at Mt. Moon and traded to the kid. Like Skarmory, she seemed right at home in this kind of weather. The bird landed on a pile of debris once everyone was close enough to each other to speak.

"Funny meeting you in a place like this." Not really. Pokemon Trainers were, by nature, curious. Sometimes too curious for their own good. They also had a tendency to jump into things if they sense a problem. "Are you holding up alright?" Nobody wanted to be caught up in a sandstorm - one that their Pokemon didn't cause, anyway. But Wes was used to it and besides, his outfit was designed to protect him in weather such as this. Black looked like he wasn't quite as prepared.

One of the more important things was to keep the sand out of his eyes. Trying to see through a sandstorm was bad enough, but trying to see through it while there was sand in your eyes was even worse. Danger could lurk anywhere in here, but at least Wes knew exactly where the source of this sandstorm was. Once he was sure that Black was okay, he was going after it.

It actually was Wes. Black was relieved. If it hadn't been Wes, Black would have two choices - either being embarrassed that he assumed someone was his friend when they weren't or being attacked. He was glad he figured it out right.

"I'm okay," Black said with a grin. "I've been in deserts before. Unova's got a pretty big one. I won't lie. I've been traipsing through it multiple times. Normally, it isn't this bad though." He glanced around, keeping his hat tilted downward so it helped block any of the sand attempting to blow into his eyes.

"How's this even happening anyways?" Black said. He jerked a thumb over his shoulder, indicating the way he came. "Further down, there's nothing and no one in the city seems to even have noticed this is happening this far into Midgar." He didn't get it. It was a self-contained sandstorm in an area that simply didn't get sandstorms. He only ever seen this happen during...

Wait.

"Is there a Pokemon involved?" he asked, looking back at Wes.

Black was alright. Wes knew the kid was a lot tougher than he looked, so maybe he shouldn't have to worry about him. Still, considering that one of his enemies from back home was causing the problems here, he felt like the safety of everyone in the area was his responsibility.

Anyway, only a few things could cause a sandstorm like this to appear in an area where it shouldn't be, especially one that only covered a limited area. Wes nodded. "I chased a Cipher Peon down into the ruins. His Shadow Hippowdon whipped up this sandstorm." He looked off in the direction where he knew the Peon and his Hippowdon were waiting. "Don't know yet if he's got more Shadow Pokemon, but even having that one makes him dangerous to anyone he runs into. Right, Combee?"

The small Pokemon's trio of faces peeked out from under Wes' coattails. Combee voiced his agreement, then quickly ducked back into hiding. That scary Hippowdon nearly killed him, so he would know!

So it was someone guy from Cipher out here causing the problems? Whoa, boy. Black honestly didn't see that one coming. While he knew about Cipher, he wasn't from the same region as them. He relied on the news he would seen back home as well as what Wes told him since they met here in the Goddess' World.

"That's not good," he said. It was an understatement, and he knew that. He dealt with Shadow Pokemon before, but he wasn't expecting one again so quickly here. They were troublesome to deal with too. There were no Shadow Pokemon in Unova, so trying to deal with trainers with them was an entirely new experience.

But, he was always up for the challenge.

"Well, let's find him," Black said. "We'll help out. If he's got more tricks up his sleeve, we'll be useful." He patted Tyranitar's side. "No tricks are getting past us."

They just needed to know where to start looking.

Wes knew that Black would offer his help, even if he didn't ask for it. That was just the kind of person Black was. Two Trainers against one would definitely help, though. They just needed to see what that bastard out there was planning.

"Let's go," he said, glancing at Skarmory. The bird launched himself into the air. Wes then turned to Black. "I'm hoping to sneak up on him while he thinks he's winning. Keep an eye out for any other Pokemon." Not just Shadow Pokemon, but wild Pokemon like Combee who were unlucky enough to get trapped in the sandstorm. As long as they were nearby, they could get hurt. Neither Trainer wanted that.

Wes started to follow Skarmory again, making his way through the sandstorm. The closer they got to the center of it, the worse it got. The sand brushing against his face was actually starting to sting, even for him. The ruins themselves were starting become even more of a distraction - he was feeling a little dizzy as he passed through them, picking up on the untold stories that haunted the abandoned city.

They were pretty close to where the Peon and his Shadow Pokemon were when Skarmory flew into a small building that was still mostly intact. Wes slipped in through the opening that used to be the doorway. This should give them some cover from the sandstorm, and it gave him a moment to focus and clear this thoughts. He leaned against the wall while Combee flew out of hiding, buzzing nearby. "Bastard's still outside, laughing his ass off," he said to Black. "What can we do to shut him up?"

They needed to come up with a plan now while they had the chance.

Black followed Wes and Skarmony through the sandstorm, making sure to keep close to Tyranitar, just in case. He knew he needed to be careful in this situation. There were Pokemon around - and who knew what other creatures who might call Midgar home - that could get caught in the crossfire. They were always something that was on Black's mind when he tried figuring his way out of these types of situations.

They got close to the Cipher Peon and his Pokemon before dodging into a building where they could watch what was going on. Tyranitar had to duck to fit through the door, but she made it in just fine, squatting into a location where she wouldn't be noticeable from the outside. Black peered out a window, squinting through the glass. He was surprised the glass was still there, but it helped him get a better look, as sand wasn't blowing into his face.

Already his mind was racing. Black was used to thinking several steps ahead in a Pokemon battle. It was his best skill. It helped that it was something he could use in a multitude of situations.

"He doesn't know we're here," Black said, meaning himself and his own Pokemon. "I think it might be best if you get his attention. Tyranitar and I can sneak up on him." Even if Tyranitar wasn't the most sneaky, she would be fine in the sandstorm and not buffered about so they wouldn't draw attention to themselves, especially if Wes was distracting the guy. "We'll take out the Hippowdon so it can't use Sandstorm anymore." He paused, thinking. "I don't suppose you have something on you that can change the weather while its distracted, do you?"

The Peon wouldn't be looking for Black or his Pokemon; right now, the only Trainer he was after and knew for sure was in the area was Wes. As long as they gave him no reason to think otherwise, he wouldn't bother to look for other Trainers or Pokemon while he had his intended target in his sights. Which meant that Wes would have to be the distraction. Again.

The older Trainer smirked. He wouldn't have it any other way.

"I have Ninetales with me. She can use Hail." While hail wasn't as ideal as rain or intense sunlight - they could still get hit by it - at least they wouldn't have it constantly slapping them in the face. And they should be able to see better. "I need to snag Hippowdon, and that guy's going to sic it on me the moment he knows I'm here. That should give you a chance to sneak up on them, though." As long as Black and Tyranitar approached carefully, they should be able to launch a surprise attack without giving the Peon a chance to change his plans.

Wes just needed to make sure he was able to snag Hippowdon before the Peon attempted to escape with it. They couldn't leave it in that bastard's hands.

Hail? That worked just great. Yeah, they could maybe get hurt by the hail, but hail wasn't a steady stream of the same type like the sandstorm was. It could maybe cause them damage, but it was also easier to see through. There were pros and cons to using it in turn, but Black was resilient enough for to withstand it until they were done, and Tyranitar wasn't as likely to be harmed by it due to her thick hide. They would manage.

"Let's do that," he said. "Give me a bit of time. We're going to get around. Then, go confront him. Put on a show, if you want. Once that Hippowdon's out, change the weather so that the sandstorm isn't messing up our vision so much."

It would work out just fine. Black didn't know what his exact attack strategy was going to be. He would see it better when he was behind them. Until then, he had all sorts of ideas running through his head.

"Catch you then," he said before getting up and leaving the window. Tyranitar followed after him as he found a back exit to the building. He disappeared outside into the sandstorm again.

Once Black and Tyranitar left, Wes turned to Combee. "Well, Combee, why don't you-" He wasn't finished when the small Pokemon zipped back underneath his coat. "Alright then." Wes had been ready to suggest that Combee remain here - where it was mostly safe - but it seemed like his new companion had already made up his mind. Maybe he was worried that something might find and attack him while he was waiting here.

With Skarmory leading the way, Wes headed back out into the sandstorm, approaching the center of it. The closer they got to the Hippowdon, the more the ground and debris sloped down, forming a pit. It would be easy to lose his footing here, but he was careful, studying how the wreckage settled against each other and only stepping onto spots where it was stable.

Put on a show, Black said. Sure, why the hell not. Wes waited for a few minutes, then he made his move.

A Great Ball flew up in a high arc, the wind actually moving it into position before dropping it on the Cipher Peon's head. It harmlessly bounced off his helmet. "Oh, I know it's you!" he yelled. "You think one measly Ball's gonna hurt?"

He was soon pelted by many more, most hitting their mark despite all the wind and sand. The barrage only stopped when Hippowdon roared and charged ahead, plowing through scrap metal and broken concrete as if it was a sand dune. Wes darted out of the way in time, while Skarmory dove down and attacked with Steel Wing.

Which only seemed to make the Hippowdon angrier than it already was. It continued chasing after Wes, its Trainer yelling and hurling insults over the wind.

Making his way through the blowing sand was easy enough, if only because Black had a plan that his mind was now focusing on. Once he had something for his mind to chew on, it was often difficult to get Black to let the thought go. It helped stop him from thinking of any of the little stings that littered his face whenever a particular piece of sand hit him.

Through the sand, he was able to make out shadowy shapes. He and Tyranitar stopped as his eyes focused on them, picking out who was who. The Peon seemed annoyed; the Hippowdon angry. That was how someone found their downfall. Black had defeated many a trainer who exhibited such traits, whether in a regular Pokemon battle or one that was more extreme reasons.

All of Tyranitar's moves went through his head quickly. He counted out loud in a soft tone, his voice being carried away in the sand. And, then they moved.

"Tyranitar, Rock Slide," he ordered. It wasn't a move that would particularly damage the Hippowdon a lot due to the type advantage, but it was going to get its attention enough to distract him and that was what he really wanted.

Tyranitar didn't hesitate. Once in reach, she hit the Hippowdon with the barrage of rocks.

That did it. The Hippowdon turned, bellowed, then launched itself at Tyranitar with Shadow Rush. Skarmory chased after it and slammed it with Night Slash, causing it to veer off-course and collide against the ground. Scrap metal and flares of a shadowy aura were thrown up into the air. The Peon cursed at the surprise attacks and was about to order Hippowdon when he heard a whisper close to his ear.

"Boo."

Wes roughly pushed the Peon, causing him to tumble and slide down with a scream. A normal Pokemon would've gone to assist its Trainer, but Hippowdon was so enraged by Skarmory and Tyranitar that it didn't care. The Peon eventually rolled to a stop against a broken wall and scrambled onto his feet, trying to put as much distance between himself and Wes. The Snagger was walking towards him, eerily calm despite the sandstorm howling around him and a Shadow Pokemon nearby.

While he needed to make sure he could snag Hippowdon the moment it couldn't battle anymore, there was still something he wanted to do while Black and the others were confronting it. And that was to terrorize his current object of disdain. He owed Cipher that much and more.
