It was funny how near silence could erupt into chaos in a matter of seconds, but that was essentially what was happening in this building right that moment. The vampires became very aware that they were under attack right now, and they didn't appear to be the sort who had any sort of plan going for them. They were all trying to rush the staircase and attack as quickly as possible. There was actually more of them than Ronald had initially thought, but that just meant the battle was going take a little longer than he originally thought it would.

It helped that, as he immediately learned when one clamped its jaw on his arm, that his shinigami flesh was thick enough that a vampire couldn't just bite him without effort, as its fangs didn't pierce his skin. Before it was able to try again, Ronald swung his death scythe up into its face. Knocking it out at least. That might have killed it, but there was another one already jumping for his back so he turned his attention to it instead.

Goddess, there were a lot of these fuckers though. How many of them were able to cramp into this building? Ronald wasn't sure, but he tried being extra careful as he swung his death scythe at his next target.

Varric heard shouting from the front of the building. Guess that mob had finally decided they had enough balls to storm it. The dwarf wasn't sure how many vampires were waiting for that group, because there was a hell of a lot of them down here trying to kill him and his companions. After the table he was using for cover had been reduced to a pile of scrap wood, he had to find some other piece of furniture to hide behind. Some woman had bared her fangs and lunged at him, only to miscalculate and sail right over his head.

Sometimes, being short helped him avoid getting chomped on.

There was a vampire in his way, so Varric smacked the guy in the face with Bianca and vaulted over a bookshelf, which was resting on its side. That was when he heard a snarl and a few dark shadows came barreling down the stairs. "Oh, of course they would have vampire dogs, too." One of the undead canines jumped towards him, but he shot it in one of its glowing eyes. It collapsed and slid up to the bookshelf, where it remained still.

How many of these bloody things were there? It seemed like there were vampires coming out of nowhere. Of course, it was possible some of the ones they were knocking down were simply getting back up but there just seemed to be so many of them. Ronald was starting to feel glad vampires didn't exist where he came from. They were annoying as all shit.

He heard a growl behind him but didn't turn fast enough. Something slammed itself into his back and caused him to topple forward. He hit the ground in a position that allowed him to roll onto his feet into a crouch position.

"They have dogs too?!" he asked with a groan. It lunged at him again, but he got both hands up to grab it by its jaws, holding its mouth open. He leveraged himself upward and onto his feet before he let go. The hound's mouth snapped shut, but Ronald gave it a swift kick to get it away from him.

It sounded like the mob was reacting outside too.

"I should have stayed home today," he muttered to himself before summoning his deathscythe to him. He had dropped it when he had gotten hit.

So vampires and vampire dogs. Wonderful. Could be worse. Varric was thinking just that as he continued to fire off bolts, one after another. Mostly, he targeted the ones that were getting too close for comfort, but whenever he had the chance, he would shoot at bloodsuckers that were close to the far wall, pinning them in place. They didn't always stay there, but at least it slowed them down.

Then he heard an unearthly roar from upstairs and made a face.

"You're the closest thing we have to a vampire expert here," he remarked to the Khajiit as she vaulted over the bookshelf he was behind. The feline crouched as she used the edge of the furniture to scrape blood and flesh off of her daggers. "Mind telling me what else could be up there?"

"Hmm." The Khajiit glanced at the stairs, which were currently empty. For now. "This one would say that there are gargoyles up there."

"Gargoyles." One of the dogs came charging at them, sinking its teeth into the bookshelf. It wouldn't let go until Varric pried it off, allowing the Khajiit to stab it. "Read about 'em in some novels I found here. Never thought they'd actually be related."

"If one looks closely, everything is related, although you may have to tilt your head sideways and squint to see it." One of the monsters stormed down the stairs then. Fortunately, a group of vampires was in its path, slowing it down. It grabbed them with its claws and threw them out of the way, solving that little problem.

There was some noises that got Ronald on high alert - if he hadn't already been on high alert with one of these death hounds trying to gnaw on his ankle. He kicked away the death hound before using his death scythe to cut clean through it. It was kind of nasty, getting some of its blood and guts on him, but that was something he just had to get used to.

Boy, his dry cleaning bill was going to be astronomical after today though.

"What's that?" he asked. He didn't see quite where the others he was fighting with were, but he didn't need to. Something burst into the room, and he took that as his cue to move to the far side of the room. He wasn't sure what it was supposed to be, but it didn't particularly seem concerned with the vampires' well-being. That didn't mean it was on their side, though.

It was followed by a couple of others who seemed determined to tear up whatever they could. The building was starting to feel crowded, so Ronald kicked a side table, causing it to slam into the nearest wall noisily. That drew some of their attention as he darted for the back door, causing them to follow him where he would have more space to wipe them out.

Vampires. Vampire mutts. And gargoyles. All ugly as shit and wanted to kill anyone who still had a beating heart. Okay, sure. The players might be different, but if Varric changed a few details, this still could've easily been another night in Thedas somewhere. Not really sure what that said about the kind of world he was from.

Actually, that said a lot. Said a lot about this world, too. It wasn't really something he wanted to think about right now.

Even for him, it was starting to feel crowded, especially after the gargoyles had charged down the stairs. This building wasn't meant to host fights involving hordes of vampires and everything else that might just happen to be vampire-related. The shinigami went to lure some of them outdoors, thinning out the ones remaining inside. Varric started to move that way, using the furniture that hadn't been destroyed yet for cover.

The dwarf stopped partway there and picked off a few more vampires that were heading his way. The Khajiit was nearby, only attacking when someone got close to her. They wanted to thin out the horde, but trying to make sure that the gargoyles didn't notice them was important, too. Varric saw one of them pick up a guy like he was a stuffed toy and throw him through a closed window. He wasn't keen on ending up the same way, and he was pretty sure that was one of the milder things that those creatures could do.

Okay, Ronald had managed to get a fair few of the vampires and their gargoyle and mutt companions outside. The important thing now was that they didn't spill out on the street and cause even more damage. That was always the problem with things like this - they were hard to keep under wraps. It was really lucky that Ronald was pretty good at keeping things under wraps. It was a shinigami trait.

Well, a trait shinigami were supposed to have. Ronald was one of the ones who liked playing by the rules because that meant he wasn't getting in trouble and got to have his days off. Some other shinigami... they weren't so well behaved.

Unfortunately, Ronald was occasionally tasked with being their underlings, which was management's way of making him be their babysitter.

He wasn't anyone's babysitter here and he expected everyone to be able to pull their own weight and not get killed. So, he didn't focus on if any of the others with him were getting in his way. Instead, he punched at vampires, connecting with jaws that was enough to knock them out if not out right dislocate it.

"Can't bite anyone that way," he muttered as he spun to the next gargoyle. It was trying to make its way out of the yard. He point a quick end to that.

A bunch of the vampires had gone to deal with the mob that was invading their lair. There wasn't too many of the bloodsuckers left, so Varric opted to help clean up the ones that were still here before he headed out. The air outdoors was shit, but it was still better than the air indoors - warm, stuffy, smelling like a room filled with corpses. Because that was exactly what it was.

As soon as he and the Khajiit were outside, they were attacked by a gargoyle. It wasn't fast enough to reach them before it was shot.

The mutts and the gargoyles were still standing their ground, but it seemed like the remaining vampires were reevaluating their choice to keep the lair they had claimed. They were even utilizing one of the most basic strategies that mankind has ever developed - get the hell away and regroup somewhere safe.

"Guess some things don't change when you're undead." Varric took aim with Bianca and started picking off the runners. He didn't want these guys to come back here for revenge, nor did he want them to find some other place to settle down in. That just meant more missing people who might end up getting chomped on.

Fighting with these things was starting to get exhausting, and not just in the sense his limbs were getting tired, though they were. He was starting to feel mentally exhausted trying to keep up with the vampires who seemed to attack on instinct instead of planning. He wished he was capable of being so aimless in how he thought, but he wasn't quite that stupid.

Maybe after a few drinks he would be, but not at the moment.

Ronald tried cutting through the vampires as quickly as possible. Every now and then, there would be another gargoyle or death hound in his path, but he mowed his way through them as quickly as the vampires. He didn't really care about the mess he was making on his suit now; he was simply going to go get it washed ASAP. No one was all too concerned with someone looking a mess in this world; there were too many things that could cause a blood spill for people to worry all that much if the person with it wasn't looking rough.

Though some people will still think he's a murderer. He'd have to work that one out later.

He cut through a vampire. And, then there was silence. No one was rushing up at him. He glanced around the yard. "...Is that it?"

Almost suddenly, it was silent. In his head, Varric counted to four and as if on cue, he could hear a chorus of rough voices cheering from the other side of the building. Yep, right on time.

"Well, I hope so." They were standing in a yard covered with dead bodies. Shot and stabbed and ripped up into pieces. "Sounds like the cowboys got the rest of them. But I still have to go back inside and see if I can find my people."

"Or what remains of them," added the Khajiit grimly.

"Yeah," the dwarf sighed, turning to look at her. "I was getting to that." After seeing the sort of vampires they were up against, as well as the condition of the building, he didn't have all that much hope. But as long as there was a chance that they survived, he had to check. And make some decisions afterwards, whether he wanted to or not.

Ronald stared at the carnage around them. Now that they were all stationary and you didn't have to peer through the chaos, one could see just how many of them there were. Ronald was a shinigami; he had been a shinigami for a long time. Seeing this much death wasn't something he liked. It was always a shame for people to die before their time. It was one of the reasons he wasn't so into doing certain parts of his job.

"...I'm not cleaning any of this up," he announced. "I'll go see what the cowboys are up to while you guys find... whoever it is you're looking for."

And, maybe pass the cleaning up onto the cowboys. It was their town, after all. Ronald was just visiting, and had decided to help after someone shot at him. It wasn't his fault the place looked like a shit hole. Not that it looked a whole lot better beforehand. Thieves' Landing had always been a shit hole.

Ronald easily hopped the fence and went around to the front of the house. If he was lucky, no one would try to attack him because they thought he was a vampire. Some people have made that mistake in the past.

"Guess it's just you and me," remarked Varric to the Khajiit as the shinigami left for the front of the house. He couldn't really blame the guy. Who in their right mind would want to stay here, now that the battle was over? Nobody, really. Necromancers, maybe. And darkspawn - as long as it wasn't bright outdoors, they would probably like munching on the corpses.

"The stench is terrible," commented his feline companion. "But this one shall watch your back. Or at least the back of your head."

"Thanks. Now let's get this over with." Varric was careful to make sure whoever he was stepping over was dead - for good, this time - as he started to make his way back to the house. Both he and the Khajiit still had their weapons drawn as they entered the darkened interior. The dwarf didn't need proper lighting - he could see enough. And he didn't really feel like seeing more. He was pretty used to seeing the bloody aftermath of a battle, with gore splattered all over the place, but there were stretches of the Deep Roads that were cleaner than this house.

Shit.
