As the brightening morning sky swept away the remnants of dawn, the hoverbike tore across the desolate ground. Shades concealing his eyes, the rider stared ahead. His two closest friends were tucked into the sidecar, enjoying the wind as it blew past their faces. The bike's engine and hover systems rumbled and hummed as they worked to keep the machine running smoothly.

The Trainer and the two Pokemon remained silent.

Wes had to get away, even if it was for just a few hours. There was just so much he had to think about and he couldn't sleep for any longer with it all tossing and turning in his mind. So he had a quick breakfast, scribbled a note that he was going out for fresh air, then got Umbreon and Espeon into the bike's sidecar and away they went. They headed straight for the place on the Western Continent that was closest to the arid landscape of Orre.

It wasn't exact, but good enough.

Deciding he had enough of going straight, Wes leaned into a curve, sending the bike into a new direction. Before he had to go back to his life here on this planet, he wanted to clear his head. For him, riding his bike off into an open landscape with no destination in mind was, in its own way, therapeutic.

Sometimes, a man needed a break. Even an admiral.

Hackett had left the Citadel. He was only going to be gone for a total of five days, without an escort. Any longer and his troops were supposed to send a search party out to look for him. A small part of him - the small, devious part that had been the teenager who helped pull pranks on his fellow recruits - thought it would be interesting to not return on schedule, just to see if they would be able to pull off what they were supposed to.

But, he had thought against it. Even if it was a test, if he had gone missing, no one on the Citadel would ever let him leave again.

And, sometimes, a man seriously needed a break.

"Uncle Steven, look!"

Hackett turned from where he had found shelter from the sun under a rock formation to where his charge, Arc, was pointing with one of his small stubby star arms downward. It was hot outside, though he was lucky to have decided on a space suit as oppose to his uniform for the day, as it was made to withstand many extreme temperatures. The sun on this planet was nothing in comparison.

"What is it?" he asked, going to join Arc by the cliff face. He instinctively reached for his gun, though he didn't draw it.

"Someone's riding a bike!" Arc said, excitedly. "And, it's floating!"

Hackett frowned. The bike was floating... in a way. Half of it, at least. It was interesting; he had never seen one like it.

When a rock formation appeared on the horizon, Wes planned to simply pass right on by. He did so, but as he caught a glimpse of who was using it for shelter, he was caught by surprise. "Is that a Luma?" he called to the twins in the sidecar. They both looked behind them briefly before answering in the positive.

What was one of Rosalina's kids doing all the way out here?

Curious, Wes turned the bike around and went back the other way, passing by the formation again. This time the bike was slightly closer to the rocks and he had a better view. Yeah, definitely a Luma, although he couldn't recognize this one. By now, he could tell apart most of Rosalina's family - it was pretty much like telling apart Pokemon from a group of the same species. He just had to look at individual features - little quirks that set one apart from the others.

This one was with a guy in a space suit for some reason. At the risk of looking a little too suspicious, Wes let the bike race along for a just a bit longer before he turned back again for a third look.

The bike got closer to them, and Hackett was able to make out the details of it. To him, it looked like a piece of junk and the sort of them that had been more common place on his home planet decades and decades before he was even born. One would never find something built that way unless they were going into museums in certain countries.

But, then again, he had seen such things as being common place still in other worlds. He shouldn't have been too surprised that there were functioning ones showing up. It was still an odd choice for a bike design. He didn't find it aesthetically pleasing. It was, to him anyways, sort of hideous. He hadn't been raised in the nicest parts of his hometown or anything, but maybe the slicker designs he was used to growing up made looking at something that seemed so bulky not as appealing.

Not only was it bulky, but it was circling around, as if it had noticed them looking down on it.

"The rider sees us," Hackett said to Arc, who looked at him curiously before looking down at the bike again. It might have been too obvious to some, but Hackett had spent a lot of missions where he had to pay attention to these details. It was good that all that desk riding hadn't made him completely useless.

"Oh," Arc said before he floated out a bit. "We should say hi then!"

Hackett felt a twinge of alarm. "Arc-"

"Hello!" Arc called down to the rider, waving his small stub arms. Hackett winced. Sometimes, he forgot that Arc could be reckless like a child. The last person he had dealt with that was reckless Shepard. But, Shepard always got good results, even if gunfire started flying.

Hopefully that wouldn't happen. Hackett liked to believe that he personally wasn't reckless. Sometimes, though, it got the better of him. Spending years as a field soldier would do that to someone. At least, his back wasn't aching today if a fight did break out. Medigel could do magical things.

Wes couldn't help but smile. Lumas were, by nature, extremely curious, to the point that common sense didn't always have to apply. In Saturn Valley, they tended to flock towards anything new, shiny, or simply something they hadn't seen much of before. They expected people to be friendly and explain unfamiliar things to them.

Which might not be the safest thing to do, out in a place like this.

Something about the guy who was with the Luma bothered him; he didn't know why yet. Still, Wes slowed the bike down, stopping not too far away from the kid. The bike's engine quieted to a low rumble, enough that it could be talked over.

"Hey," he greeted in return. "Sorry if we startled you. I was just wondering what a Luma's doing all the way out here in the Badlands." It was a dangerous place, and it was pretty far from Saturn Valley, half a world away. Umbreon was watching the little guy with curiosity, but Espeon had his eyes on the man in the space suit, trying to figure him out without the use of his telepathy.

"Uncle Steven, look, they're coming closer!" Arc said, excitedly. He seemed more interested in the bike and the person riding it than the fact that the man could very well be a bandit. Hackett wasn't used to how bandits might have dressed as anyone who constituted as a bandit back home was still dressed in the same sort of manner.

But, the man greeted them in a friendly manner. That made him mildly less suspicious. Mildly.

"Hello," Hackett said in greeting. He reached an arm up automatically and snapped a salute. It was such a common reaction for him, considering he was around soldiers most of the time. It was just a general reaction for them, even though it wasn't something he had to do. As a higher rank - the highest rank - he didn't quite need to do it. "Admiral Steven Hackett."

"I'm Arc!" Arc piped up. "I"m here with Uncle Steven!"

Hackett couldn't stop the small smile that appeared on his face at that statement.

"I'm familiar with Rosalina, his mother," Hackett explained to the younger man. "Arc took a liking to the Citadel when they came to visit, so he's opted to live with me."

"Living with Uncle Steven on a space station is the best!" Arc piped again.

So... Arc and Uncle Steven. Or rather, Admiral Steven Hackett. The guy who was currently in charge of the Citadel. Wes had heard of him, and just knowing that he was right here in front of him made him both a little wary and concerned. Encountering people with authority almost always gave him that feeling.

"I'm Wes," he replied, pushing his shades up from his eyes and onto his head. For a moment he was worried about giving out his name - people have been after him since Calamity ended - but he ultimately decided that it was okay. Likely Hackett wasn't one of those people; this guy had far more important things to do than trying to catch Victors for bounties. "And these two are Umbreon and Espeon." The twins piped up with friendly greetings of their own.

"I've been helping Rosalina with a certain project," he then explained, "so I've been seeing her and her family a lot these days." It started because of Lloyd, but Wes found that he wasn't just helping out because of him. The Trainer really did enjoy working on the project, building and maintaining vehicles, testing them out on the track. And just having someplace to go, being with other people and getting out of the Axolotl for a while.

It gave him something to focus on, which kept him from constantly worrying about current events and what his enemies might be up to when he wasn't hunting them down.
