Jack stepped around the camp carefully. He didn't want to disturb anything in the camp that could give them answers. It was lucky that he was so naturally graceful, then. Lesser people might have knocked things aside. Jack could only imagine what Riki as a human would be, without all the natural agility and balance that the Nopon came with.

Inwardly, he winced at the thought.

Jack turned at the sound of Riki's voice. He walked over and crouched down by the drag marks that Riki had discovered. He ran a finger over one of them. Dirt tumbled with his fingers. It wasn't packed down, which meant these hadn't been tread on for a long time. At least, not any time recently. Was this where the camper was?

"Had they been kidnapped?" Jack mused as he stood up. His brow furrowed as he continued to stare down at them, his gaze slowly going up the path to where it disappeared from sight. "Do you think we should follow it?"

Kidnapped? By who... or what? Riki could imagine that someone knocked the camper out and dragged them away... but that didn't explain the damage done to the tent. So maybe the culprit was some dangerous creature that wanted the camper for lunch!

A big scary creature would definitely tear up a tent like this!

Which was why, when Jack asked whether or not they should follow, Riki gulped.

The Nopon looked at the drag marks, eyes going from where they started to where they disappeared into the brush. Then he looked at the tent and its tattered side. Then he looked up at Jack. He really didn't want to get eaten, and he didn't want Jack to get eaten, either!

But he also didn't want the camper to get eaten. And that was why he made the decision that he did.

"Heropon and Duel King run from nothing!" Riki declared, puffing out his chest. "Chase after kidnapper and give bash on head. Rescue camper then!" They were fearless warriors and no villain, nor hungry critter with sharp claws and teeth, was going to beat them!

Jack could tell there was hesitation from Riki's thoughts. He didn't quite blame the Nopon, not in the same way that he would blame anyone else who would hesitate when it came down to facing danger in the name of helping someone else out. Riki was a father; he had multiple children. He needed to think about that before he ran off recklessly. Jack didn't have that same constraints. Yes, he had friends, but he didn't have that obligation that said he needed to look after someone.

It was an odd thing to think about, but it was still something that people like them who went into battle frequently always had in the backs of their minds.

But, in the end, Riki agreed that they should give chance. There was a possibility that someone was in danger. It wasn't in his own nature to leave someone who could get killed, and he knew it wasn't in Riki's either. If there was some sort of dangerous monster that could possibly kill them waiting at the end of the trail, then they were just going to have to be prepared for it.

"Heropon and Duel King have no fears," he agreed. He had his duel disk on him. He didn't summon a monster, but he knew that he would be able to do so easily in case he needed it. He stood away from tracks, looking down the path that they led. "Think you can track it?" he asked, looking down at Riki.

Riki nodded. "Kidnapper leave trail obvious to Nopon senses. Easy for tracking." Even if the visible traces of the trail disappeared, he was still capable of following by scent and sound. While this forest wasn't quite like Makna, it was still a forest, and Nopon were built to travel through such places with the greatest of ease.

Even if they sometimes got lost.

Which he hadn't been, by the way.

Hopping over to the brush, Riki peered down the rough path. Then he turned to Jack. "Have to move sneaky-sneaky. Kidnapper not hear us then." They didn't want whoever or whatever it was to realize that they were being followed. If Riki and Jack could keep the element of surprise, then they would have the advantage.

The Heropon slipped into the brush, being a lot more quieter than he was while carving a path through the woods earlier. He still cleared the path for Jack, but he was being much more careful with how he did it.

Sneaky-sneaky?

Jack wasn't the one who would ever admit to such a thing, but he wasn't necessarily capable of being sneaky-sneaky. Whatever that was supposed to mean. Stealth, probably. He wasn't the best at that. He was the one in either one of his teams he was apart of - whether Team 5Ds or the Journal Network - who was most likely to crash into the area, announcing his presence. To him, his name was something to be feared by the people who opposed him.

Sometimes in this world, he forgot that not everyone already knew his name like they did back home. But, they would probably learn it.

This kidnapper was going to learn it pretty quickly, monster, human or whatever it happened to be.

Jack stepped into the brush, following after Riki. This time, he made sure to step much carefully, so his tracks weren't being left behind in a noticeable way. They needed to be as... sneaky-sneaky as possible.

Even saying the word in his head made him feel secondhand embarrassment. It sounded alright coming from a Nopon, but from him it sounded stupid.

He shook it from his mind, attempting to focus on Riki's moving back.

Riki continued to move quietly through the forest, pushing past branches and leaves, tiptoeing across fallen logs, hopping over rocks. Even with all these obstacles, the trail that the kidnapper had left was still quite obvious to him, so he didn't have to stop to make sure he was going the right way. He had been going the right way all this time. He was Heropon, and his kidnapper-tracking skills were the best of the best!

When he was about a foot away from a new clearing, Riki stopped abruptly, spun around and faced Jack. The Nopon put a finger to his lips. Now was the time when they really had to be sneaky-sneaky! Then he turned and headed off to his left, circling around the clearing while keeping a layer of brush between him and it.

Riki found a better place to sneak on through and slowly crept closer, pushing some of the grass away - but not enough to reveal his presence to anyone who might be in the clearing. There, right in the middle, was a tree. From that tree was a guy tied up and hanging upside-down from a branch. He was gagged and squirming a lot. Judging by his outfit, Riki assumed that he was the camper they were looking for.

Normally, he would jump in right away, but he smelled a trap.

If the pair had been doing just a regular trek through the forest, like they had been doing moments before until they had come across the abandoned camp, then Jack would have been more than willing to complain about the route that they were currently taking. It wasn't the easy way to go, as far as walking. Jack wasn't some uncouth mountain man. He preferred a trail as opposed to crashing through the brush like they currently were.

But, because they were going this way with a plan in mind, Jack didn't mind it as much as he normally would have. He was still unimpressed with the possibility that his jacket might get torn on all the branches they were pushing on the way. If something happened, he would have to take it to a professional to get it fixed. He wouldn't be able to deal with not having his coat. He was attached to it. Plus, it looked good.

When Riki turned to show that he should be quiet, Jack went still for a moment, not making a noise. He waited until Riki moved until he lowered himself into a crouch and followed suit, keeping down and low to the ground so he wouldn't be spotted anymore than the Nopon.

He thought that would be a hard sell, in comparison to Riki. Riki's colour pattern and size made it easier for him to hide among the grass. Jack was in mostly white; he stood out. Hopefully, he made himself not very noticeable.

"That looks like a trap to me," he muttered, lowly. "You see anything else around?" Riki was more likely to pick something up, particularly a scent.

They were in agreement that this was obviously a trap. Good, good. No running to the rescue and getting caught. Both Riki and Jack were very smart and knew better than to run into what was such an obvious trap. Most of the time.

Riki looked around the clearing. It was mostly empty, save for a few large rocks sticking out of the grass. Nothing seemed unusual... for most of them. One looked like the rock it should be, but something about it bothered Riki. It was the right color, and it wasn't shaped unusually, but it still stood out from the others...

Oh! The texture was slightly different! And it was very hard to see from here, but a few of the cracks in it looked too perfectly straight to be real...

"Rock over there not really rock," he whispered to Jack, pointing at it.

Jack stared at the scene before them in the clearing. What was the purpose of this? Was it supposed to be bait or something like that? But, for whom? It couldn't have been them, could it? No one knew they were here. Not for long enough to figure out some sort of trap for them. Then, who could this had been prepared for? Some helpless travel that some group of crooks wanted to harass and rob?

He didn't like the way any of this looked. It was too fishy, too shady. And, he hated being in a situation where he didn't know all the details right away. It made it harder to know how to proceed.

When Riki said something wasn't really a rock, Jack looked in that direction. It was hard to see what Riki was meaning until he was able to stare at it for a moment. But, once he was able to get a good look at it, it was clear to him that Riki was right. That wasn't a rock. Not a real one anyways.

"If it's not a rock, what is it?" he muttered under his breath. He glanced at Riki. "Maybe we should check it out first before we going seeing about saving that guy's ass." It could give them the answers they needed.

Maybe. Maybe it was just a fake rock someone threw on the ground. People in this world were frustrating at the best of times. He wouldn't have put it past them to do something that would annoy him so much like that.
