So this was the train!

Smiling nearly from ear to ear, Dorumon peered out through the open window, the wind ruffling his fur and ears. The scenery rushed past as the train continued on its way across the Western Continent. He had never been on a train before, so he never knew just how much fun it could be.

Just one more new thing that he got to experience while living here.

"Do you always ride the train?" he asked Mei, finally pulling his head away from the window and sitting properly in his seat. Dorumon was aware that he stood out in this car. He was the only Digimon, as well as the only dragon. At least he wasn't the only one covered in fur! There was some cat lady sitting near the front of the car. She had given him a smile when he had first stepped inside.

Dorumon thought it was safe to assume that the Flying Pussyfoot was how many people got around. Not everyone could drive, and not everyone could fly. He could fly... just not right now. Maybe one day...

Mei stared down at her cellphone. It had been upgraded from the one that had come with her to the world. Apparently, hers was old fashioned. Something about it being nearly twenty years in the past, if what Black had said was anything to go by. Jack had bought her a new phone so she was able to easily contact the others in case she needed help. She thought it would be an useful thing, seeing as she didn't come with any sort of fancy powers like some of the others.

Her screen had a photo on it. Black had taken it and sent to it her. She didn't understand why Black had sent her an up close photo of Jellicent where his face seemed to fill the whole screen, but it was kind of cute, in a weird way. So, Mei made it her wallpaper so she no longer had a default one.

"Hm?" She shoved her phone into her pocket. "Oh, yeah. I take the train when I need to get around. I can't drive yet." She wasn't sure if she was ever going to be capable of driving in this world; she wasn't sure how a license here would work. One would normally have to be a resident of a country and go to their local motor vehicle place for a test. Yomiyama City wasn't here. Here, she wasn't really a resident of anywhere that could count. She lived on a moving airship.

"It's easier to take the train from city to city," she continued to explain. "Especially in comparison to walking everywhere. That's tiring." And, she wasn't so energetic that she could bike everywhere. She looked Dorumon over. She had been the one to pay his way on. "You know, we should get you a bag or something to wear. You can carry money for train fare if you want to ride it and I'm not with you."

Dorumon had recently learned that only certain people could drive. Something about... licenses? Everyone who had their own personal vehicle had one. In theory, anyway. It sounded a little complicated.

Since the train went from city to city, Dorumon could see why Mei said it was easier to take it instead of walking everywhere. Some of the places here were really far apart! The catch was that everyone had to pay each time they wanted to take the train. He wasn't really used to using money; Mei had to pay for him this time. Besides, he didn't have any way to carry money.

Which was why he perked up when Mei suggested a bag.

"And then maybe I can carry other things, too." Wearing stuff wasn't normal for Dorumon. Some Digimon did, but he obviously didn't. But in this world, with so many different things going on, it might be really useful to have something to keep money and supplies in. "I don't really know much about bags... but I think I'll need one with an adjustable strap."

Just in case he ended up evolving during an emergency, or something like that. Dorumon wasn't sure if Mei knew that about Digimon. The only thing a lot of people knew about Digimon was that they swarmed Neo Domino City several months back.

Mei was pleased that Dorumon had actually liked her idea. She knew it wasn't always likely that people would approve of changes to how they were living their lives. But, she was pretty sure that Dorumon's world didn't typically use these sorts of things. At least, from what she heard of Digimon. They were humanoids who made the same types of cities that humans did.

"Maybe we'll get one in the place we're going," Mei said. She wasn't much of a shopper, but she would go shopping with Dorumon. They had a goal in mind and knew what they were going for. Plus, Dorumon wouldn't be the type to be super picky over what he wanted in his bag. As long as it had an adjustable strap, it seemed to be alright. There were a lot of bags like that. Mei was sure there were even ones that would have been longer than bags normally would be for a human as there were larger people in this world too.

She went quiet again so she could look out the window. She didn't think that Dorumon would mind that she wasn't talking all that much. She just wasn't much of a talker.

The train did pass some creature that was really large. Mei sat up a bit so she could look out her window more. She wondered what it was supposed to be. She hoped it would ignore the train.

"I'm looking forward to it, then," Dorumon replied. They now had a goal to keep in mind, and he really was looking forward to it. Mei probably had a better idea of what to look for in a bag, too. He probably wouldn't have thought of this idea at all if he was still wandering the world, all by himself.

Dorumon was so glad he had befriended Mei. If he hadn't met her, would he still be wandering around alone? Maybe he would've met another person, but would they be friends? Would he have a home to return to, like he did now?

Mei had gone quiet, so Dorumon looked out the window again. By now, he understood that Mei was a quiet human, which was perfectly fine. Not everyone was talkative all the time. The scenery outside the train was enough to keep him occupied, although the sight of a large creature by the tracks worried him a little.

"What do you think that was?" he asked, glancing at Mei. The train had went by so quickly that he had trouble picking up the creature's scent. Whatever it was, he sure hoped that it was peaceful...

Even leaning her forehead against the glass, Mei couldn't see the big creature anymore. She hoped it resembled a lot of other large creatures and was slow and lumbering when it moved. If it was a sprinter, the train was probably screwed. This wasn't some fancy metro. This train was something old-school that didn't really get to see the light of day anymore where Mei was from. Sure, it was faster than walking. It might have even been faster than a car, if one was going above the speed limit. Mei wasn't even sure what the speed limit was. At any rate, this train wasn't as fast as the trains back home and she was sure something that could move fast enough could catch up to it.

"I don't know what it is," Mei answered truthfully. "You remember those large things we had to pass by in the forest though? Maybe it's something like one of those." There was quite a large number of large beasts in Makna Forest. Most of them seemed to ignore you if you made a wide enough berth around them. If you came across anything that might attack, you would probably need to sneak around them. Mei was pretty good at going unnoticed so she hadn't had to worry too much about that.

She was hoping she wasn't going to have to worry about giant beasts while on the train. It just wasn't the place one could expect to experience that.

Not that anything in this world would be something to expect.

"Want to explore the train?" she asked Dorumon, getting up from her seat. It would make time go a lot faster than if they just say around, staring out the window.

Makna Forest really did have a lot of large creatures roaming around, didn't it? Dorumon had been relieved that none of them decided to attack them as they left Raftfleet. Mei didn't look like she had anything to defend herself with, so Dorumon would've been the one to protect her. And he wasn't sure how well he'd do against a bunch of large vicious creatures with his current strength.

But he would still fight. He didn't like fighting much and he didn't like seeing others get hurt, but he would fight if he had a good reason to.

It didn't look like they would have to worry about anything attacking the train, at least not right now. Mei suggested exploring it. "Sure," Dorumon nodded, slipping off his seat. "I've never been on a train before, so I don't really know what the inside of one looks like." But now he could find out. It was something he would probably never learn about back in the Digital World.

There were a lot of things here that he had to learn about. Dorumon didn't mind. A different world ought to have different things in it, things that he wasn't used to.

Mei shoved her hands into her jacket pockets. Today, she wasn't in her uniform. Instead, she was wearing some clothes that she had picked up shortly after she had gotten there. Mei didn't mind school. She actually kind of enjoyed learning. But, she didn't want to be wearing a middle school uniform all the time. It was a nice uniform and all. It just wasn't every day, all day material.

"Most of the train cars will probably look the same," Mei said. That was typically how trains worked. Farther up in the train, the cars were probably made for fancy first class people. They probably had private rooms and all that. Mei had never been in one of those. She had never had the means or reason to have to ride in a first class car. Honestly, she thought it was a waste of money. Why couldn't the rich just ride with everyone else? They'd be able to fit in so many more people on the train and would not have to take as many trips.

That was the rich for you, though. They were kind of useless when they weren't doing their actual work.

"The interesting thing is being able to see the people who are riding on the train," she added. She paused, taking a look around. There were a few people who were sitting in their car, but Mei had chosen one far down the row because she thought it would be more empty than the others. It was weird how a lot of people wanted to sit closer to the front. It was like they didn't want to be anywhere near the luggage. She thought that would be super silly. Wouldn't you rather be closer to your stuff than so far away from it?

Mei didn't understand people sometimes.

"Let's go then," Mei said. She led the way down the train car, opening the door so they could head into the next one.

So seeing people who were riding the train was more interesting than the train itself? Dorumon thought he understood why. So many people took the train, right? And there were so many different kinds of people here, from many different worlds. A train in the Digital World would likely have nothing but Digimon riding it. That clearly wasn't the case here.

There weren't many people in this car. Maybe there would be more in the next one?

Dorumon followed after Mei, the claws on his feet lightly clicking on the floor. While he could hear it, he thought that most of the other passengers couldn't - the sound of the train running along the tracks muffled it somewhat. He was being very careful with how he moved - he didn't want to accidentally bump into someone who was sitting close to the aisle. The last thing he wanted was to bother anyone.

Once they reached the end of the car, Dorumon waited as Mei opened the door. The Digimon followed after her as soon as he was able to, and... look! Mei was right; this car looked pretty much the same as the previous one. The only real difference was the people who were in here.

Mei stepped into the next car. It was exactly like the car they had just been in, if one was simply looking at the car itself. But, the people who were in the car were different than from the people in the car they had just left. Some of them looked interesting. Mei had learned a lot about the world since she had come here, even in the short amount of time she had been here. She had some help, of course, but learning about things was something that always interested Mei.

"Dorumon, let's sit for a second," she said. She slid into the back seat of the train car. Most of the people who were in the train car were seated farther up so no one would be able to hear her if she was speaking here. She wanted to take a good look at the people around her. That was what they were snooping around for, wasn't it?

She shifted so her feet were tucked onto the seat and she was raised on her knees, arms resting on the seat before her. It was also empty, meaning she wasn't awkwardly invading anyone's personal space as she did that.

"I think that guy at the very front is a mage from the College," she said, just loud enough for Dorumon to hear what she was saying. "He has a robe on that looks like the ones they wear there. Also, see his staff?" She didn't point it out but she was able to see it leaning against the window.

Now they were going to sit down again? Dorumon didn't ask why; he just slid onto the seat beside Mei, shifting a bit so he wasn't too close to the aisle. Unlike Mei, he didn't change how he was sitting afterwards. If he tried that, he'd probably puncture holes into the seat with his sharp claws, and he was sure that would cause all sort of problems that they didn't need. Instead, he tried to sit up straighter, peering over the top of the seat in front of them.

The Digimon could see the person Mei was talking about - he had a robe, as well as a staff. While Dorumon knew that there was a college for mages somewhere up north, he didn't know all too much about it. He wondered what kinds of people went there, and what they learned about.

"Are there a lot of mages in this world?" he inquired. Magic seemed to be something that a lot of worlds had in common. But apparently, a lot of magic was different from each other. Dorumon wasn't sure if he would be able to tell the difference.

Dorumon wanted to know if there were a lot of mages in this world. Mei probably wasn't an expert on the topic. She hadn't even really run into a lot of mages. She just knew about them, mostly. She even tried remembering if anyone in the Network was a mage, but she didn't really remember. Some of them had fancy powers, she was sure. But, she wasn't sure if it was magic.

"I think so," she said. "Magic seems to come in all sorts of forms, from what I hear. Like remember when we were in Raftfleet? They have a thing called Runes, which they just attached to compatible people and then they're capable of using the type of magic that Rune has." Mei had wanted to see if she was compatible with any Runes, but she had gotten caught up with Dorumon and hadn't had the chance to check out any more of the shops that she had wanted to.

She had gotten a really good meal out of it, though. It had been a delicious meal and she had gotten to meet Dorumon too. It had been a good day overall. It just meant she had to go back one day. Maybe her and Dorumon could go back together again someday.

"I think those two are from the Citadel," she said, indicating the two who were sitting a few seats ahead of them. From the backs of their heads, they looked odd. She couldn't tell what they were supposed to be either, but they were colourful. She hadn't quite mastered the names of all the alien races, anyways.

Dorumon hoped that if they ever ran into any mages, they were friendly ones. Some mages probably weren't. But that was how everyone was, though. Some people and creatures were nice, like Mei and everyone else living on the ship. Others weren't nice, and they caused problems for everyone else.

It was the same in the Digital World. Just a fact of life, he guessed.

Mei then pointed out the two people sitting a few seats ahead of them. "The Citadel's that big city in space, right?" Dorumon asked. He had heard that there was a city in space - a really large one, with all kinds of people living in it. The dragon had never been to space before, so he had no idea what it was like up there.

Maybe he and Mei could go up there one day, to see what it was like. Just another place they could explore together, if they ever got the opportunity.

It was such a hard thing to try and describe the Citadel to another person. In Mei's time, people talked about making space stations and maybe one day living on the moon. In some world out there, that was a possibility that people thought of as an every day part of life. Mei wanted to go up there one day, to see what advanced technology from aliens looked like.

"We should go one day," Mei said. She wasn't sure if Dorumon would want to go up there, but she hoped he would go with her. She liked hanging out with him. He wasn't someone who talked so much it annoyed her. She wasn't the most social person. Someone who wanted to speak every single second was someone she preferred avoiding most of the time.

She couldn't see anyone else on this train car were interesting to her. Was that a rude thing to think? Mei thought it probably could be, but no one here could read her thoughts so it didn't matter.

Well, she thought there was no one here that would be able to read her thoughts. She was pretty sure it was possible for some people in this world. The very idea of that was unsettling to her, and she didn't like it. She hoped no one tried it on her.

"Should we check out the next car?" she asked Dorumon.

Mei said what Dorumon had been thinking, and he nodded. They really should go up to the Citadel one day. It was certainly a place worth checking out, and he didn't think he wanted to go there without the person who was essentially his closest friend here on this planet. They might learn a lot being up there in space.

He was learning some stuff right now, simply by being on this train.

"Okay," Dorumon nodded when Mei asked if they should check out the next car. Maybe there would be more interesting passengers to spot, or something else. Slipping off the seat, he stepped onto the aisle, then carefully backed up to allow Mei to go ahead of him. This was the first time he had ever been on a train, and he felt uneasy at the thought of leading the way. Also, he wasn't sure if he could open the doors at each end of the cars.

That was something he had to learn about. There were so many different kinds of doors in this world...
