Oh, those hawks had been pretty skeptical. A scrawny human - or beorc, he guessed - like him, who had to get around the ocean on a giant golem, climbing up one of these mountains? They didn't think it would be possible. But he sure showed them!

...or, at least Aden would like to think so, but he didn't see any of the local laguz around. Oh well, who cares! He was climbing up here for himself more than he was for those guys.

With a grunt, he pulled himself up over the edge of the cliff, turning and sitting there with his legs hanging off the side. Fleury let go of his back to sit beside him, while Klefbom just flew up and sat on the Earthmate's other side. Sure, Aden could've taken the easy way up here and just flown on the Gold Dragon's back, but again, he wanted to prove to himself that he could get up here on his own. And he did!

All those scratches and bruises he acquired on the way up here hadn't slowed him down at all.

"Can see pretty far from here." Past all the lower mountains and rough terrain was the port they stopped at, Ymir towering nearby. After passing by Phoenicis so many times - often with laguz dropping in to question them - the hawks have finally accepted that the giant Plant Golem wasn't a threat to their island. They even seemed pretty entertained by the idea that such a thing existed and that, for the most part, he only listened to Aden.

Beyond Ymir and the port was the great ocean beyond.

"So! Now that we're all the way up here, what should we do?" Fleury replied with chatter that few people besides Aden could understand. "Just sit back and relax, huh? Guess we can do that for a while." It was a little chilly, but they did work to get up here. Might as well enjoy it.

Holland never been to Phoenicis before. It was an island of nothing, if someone was being really honest with themselves. The island was mountainous without much terrain that humans would find useful if one wanted to farm or build here. There wasn't a full city, as far as Holland was aware. He knew there was a castle here somewhere - Phoenicis Hall as they called it - that housed their kings of old, but it was off limits to visitors, which was fair. Who waited strangers poking around your king's house when your king wasn't even there?

So, Holland never bothered to go there. But, he was here now because he was feeling curious. As leader of the Journal Network, he thought it was more prudent for him to get to know the area around him since information was something they needed in their job. Others have come here before, but he might as well get an aerial view of the place.

That was why Holland was in his LFO. He was stopped as he came over the docks, but the laguz who stopped him only seemed curious about his LFO. He explained what it was, demonstrated his lifting skills in it. They liked it, and they let him pass. That was how he found himself soaring in his LFO over the island.

The island wasn't too big, and he would be able to cross it no problem but that wasn't his goal. He circled it a few times, trying to mentally map it out. He lowered himself down among the mountain peaks for a closer look. As he turned around a mountain, he saw a guy he had seen before.

Holland stopped the LFO and popped the door of his cockpit.

"Hey, Aden," he called, loud enough for his voice to carry to the younger man.

Aden

Usually when a giant machine suddenly showed up out of nowhere, people would be worried about it. But Aden had seen that particular one before, as well as its pilot. "Hey, Holland!" he called back, waving. If it was just him and his LFO, they had nothing to worry about. And if Aden wasn't reacting negatively, neither did the two monsters he was with.

Klefbom studied the LFO quietly, while Fleury turned to Aden and chattered again, asking just who Holland was. "Oh, he's a guy I met at the College." They were both there for the New Year's challenge, along with the resident mages. And they fought a dragon - not the largest one Aden had ever seen, but still big - and got the key from it. Once that was all done, everyone hung around for a while. Aden got to talk with Holland then.

"So, how you've been?" The fight at the College hadn't been that long ago, but a lot of things could've happened since then.

Aden looked to be well. Holland was glad for that. He only saw Aden not too long ago when they both took part in one of the Goddess' games at the College of Winterhold. They were able to have a feast afterward at the courtesy for the mages, who thought to treat them for helping out. That meant they had a chance to talk and get to know each other a bit. He liked Aden. Over time, Holland learned how to get a good read on people, so he always knew after a bit of talk if they were someone he could get along with or not. Aden fell into the former.

Holland was curious over the monsters Aden had with him, so he took his LFO closer so he could get a better look at them. They were kind of cute and not the type that Holland normally thought of when he thought of monsters. But, he also lived through the Coralians attacking his home world, and those - when not talking about ones like Eureka and Anemone - were not pleasant to look at.

"I've been good," he said. Now that he was closer, he didn't have to shout for Aden to hear. "Been kind of busy and all." He had mentioned to Aden before he was a family man, and that was something that kept him on his toes. He didn't have to explain that. "I haven't been checking out the Goddess' other days though. My friends have been, and they're keeping me posted. You take part in any others yet?" He knew some people wanted to be involved in multiple ones, and he wondered if Aden fell into that group.

Nice to hear that Holland was doing well. Aden knew from their chat back at the College that the guy had a pretty active schedule. Might be why he hadn't checked out any of the other challenges, too. "Not yet. Just been doing my own thing." Taking care of the farm and exploring faraway places. Aden could say he was also busy, just in a different way than Holland. "Maybe the next time one happens nearby, I'll get there in time to take part."

He knew that Holland had gotten closer so he could see the two monsters better. Might be the first time he had ever seen ones like these. The monsters from Aden's world didn't seem to be as numerous here as the wild Pokemon. You had a better chance running into one if you were actively looking for them and knew that they were around.

"Oh, right. This is Fleury and Klefbom." Aden pointed at each of them as he said their names. "And you've probably seen Ymir while you were heading up here. He's pretty hard to miss."

Fleury and Klefbom? Those were unusual names. Holland didn't judge though. He long ago learned that names were one of the things that varied from world to world, or even regions in each individual world. They could have been perfectly plausible names in Aden's world, or even the world of whoever decided to call them that.

Hell, for the longest time, Holland couldn't understand who would call their child Black or White. They were named for colours, and that was beyond odd to him, but he didn't question it out loud. It seemed like it was perfectly plausible thing where they came from.

"Yeah, I saw him but I didn't really put two and two together," he replied. "I didn't even think he was yours." He was used to seeing monsters of all types and there was often more than one of them lurking around. Seeing the large golem out at sea wasn't something that dawned on Holland as potentially being something he knew. It hadn't attacked him, so he left it at that.

"You heading up the mountain?" Holland asked, glancing upward. It wasn't the highest mountain here, but it was a fair size. Heading up the highest one was probably folly for anyone who didn't have some sort of unnatural power to them that let them breathe in such thin air, and Holland didn't remember Aden telling him he had anything like that.

Holland didn't think he would like to climb even this mountain. He had drank one too many beers in his lifetime to make that walk a comfortable one.

"Yeah, I get that sometimes." A lot of people wouldn't believe that such a large golem had a master, that he wasn't just roaming around wild. Even some folks back at home would've thought that way, if they've never been to Fenith Island before. Most of the golems in Aden's world were nowhere near Ymir's size.

Holland then asked if Aden and his friends were heading up the mountain. "That's what we've been doing," Aden replied, shifting a bit to glance over his shoulder and up at the peak. "Some of the hawks said I couldn't do it, but I'm up here." All that telling him that it was impossible did was make him all the more determined to climb. Aden didn't like being told that something was impossible and would go out of his way to prove people wrong, whether it actually benefited him or not.

He was stubborn. Some people would even say that he was crazy. But Aden felt that risks and challenges just made life more interesting to live. It wouldn't be fun if everything was so easy, right?

Holland had to admit - he was impressed. The size of the mountain was pretty formidable. It was the type of mountain he could imagine the trainers back home in the military would punish recruits by threatening to make them run up it. Once during a training camp, that had been a punishment, though the mountain wasn't as big and Holland didn't get punished. He never did anything that deserved a punishment because he was always the perfect soldier.

Or, he was up until he went AWOL, stealing an airship and taking several soldiers with him. Aside from that part, he had always been an exemplary soldier.

"Want some more company?" Holland asked. He wouldn't mind the walk, and he was in good enough shape to make it through the climb. Besides, part of the mountain was out of the way so it wasn't like he needed to climb the whole thing. And, he could use the fresh air, as well. Holland spent a lot of time these days cooped inside, but he also had a child to take care of.

"If we can find a ledge I can park my LFO on," he added. It wasn't like anyone was likely to steal it; it would be locked up and there wasn't likely to be someone who came by who even knew how to fly it.

"Sure," Aden replied, standing up and brushing the dirt off his clothes. "The more, the merrier, right?" Unless it was one of those times when it wasn't merrier. The Earthmate knew from experience what those were like. But this clearly wasn't going to be one of those times, unless they stirred up some trouble along the way.

The challenge of getting up to this point had already battered him, but Aden barely felt it. They were just scratches and bruises, not enough to keep him from going on.

"That ledge over there looks wide enough," he then added, pointing to it. Should be enough space for Holland to land his LFO. Klefbom yawned and stretched, while Fleury hopped onto his feet and shook some of the dirt from his wool. Like their friend, they were ready to continue. Klefbom was one of the strongest monsters that Aden and Calcifer had, and Fleury was a lot tougher than he looked. Even a mountain like this wasn't about to stop them, especially if Aden was determined to climb it.

Good, they were going to go for their mountain climb together. Holland needed the exercise. At his age, he could still get away with being able to maintain his health without trying too hard, but he was getting older and that wasn't going to work forever. He also had a kid, who he wanted to make sure he was always healthy to be around for.

"Alright, give me a moment," Holland said. He took his LFO to the ledge in question, landing on it carefully. Some people, even when experienced, would have a problem landing on a ledge like that while in a LFO. Holland was lucky he was better than most people at both regular lifting and LFO piloting. Only someone like Eureka or Renton would be able to land as smoothly as he could.

He made sure his LFO was shut down completely and climbed out. Once it was all locked up, he made his way over to where Aden and his two monsters were.

"Ready when you are," he said. Aden could lead the way. After all, Holland was the one who invited himself onto this hike. He could be a follower for it instead of trying to derail wherever Aden planned to go.

"Alright! Let's go, then." Aden went ahead, jogging along an uneven slope that could just barely pass for a pathway. Fleury ran after him, while Klefbom let Holland go ahead of him. The dragon could just fly, but for the time being, he was sticking to the ground like everyone else. Might as well see where things headed from here.

The path was somewhat short, leading them to a set of large rocks that formed a natural staircase of sorts. Aden went up them, hopping over the gaps. Fleury did the same, although he took his time with some of the wider spaces. Klefbom had an easier time since he was pretty big - he crossed most of the gaps as if he was just stepping over a puddle.

When the steps got steeper, Aden had to grab onto them in order to scramble up.

Holland let Aden go ahead, and then one of his monsters. It looked like he was supposed to go next, so he followed after them, though he did move a bit more slowly than the two ahead of him. He hoped that the one behind him - the one called Klefbom, if he could recall correctly from what Aden said - didn't mind that he wasn't moving as quickly as his owner and friend were. He needed to make sure he was careful as he walked. Going over the edge wasn't something he wanted to do.

Holland made a quick glance down. Nope, going over the edge wasn't something he wanted to do.

As the pathway turned more difficult, Holland paused so he could take his jacket off and tied it around his waist. It was kind of warm out that day, even if they were climbing up a mountain and the air was getting marginally thinner. Climbing up a mountain trail like they were was tiring work, even more so than some exercise did. He was starting to sweat.

He wasn't as fond as having to use his hands to help climb up the trail, but it still wasn't too difficult for him. There were certain military missions he'd been on that had far harder climbs than this one, where the climb was almost harder than dealing with whoever was on the other side.

Holland glanced upward at the pathway. "There's loose rocks up there, Aden, be careful," He called. There was dirt mingled with the rocks, which would make them tumble easier.

"I see 'em." Aden paused and pulled his hat off his head. It was getting warm up here and while it might've given him some protection from the sunlight, he didn't want to lose it on a difficult climb. It was silly, but he was really fond of this hat. Sure, he could make another one that was exactly the same if he ever did lose it, but he was trying to not resort to that if he could.

Stuffing the hat into a coat pocket, he took out his pair of work gloves and pulled them on. Probably should've worn them sooner and spared his hands of the scratches he got. Hadn't really thought of it.

Aden took a deep breath, as if testing how thin the air was getting up here. As he did, Fleury moved past him and went up the pathway, carefully moving around the looser rocks. Aden watched him, then proceeded to follow the sheep. Being human, he was heavier than Fleury and there were a few steps that caused the rocks to tumble, but he quickly moved to steadier ground whenever that happened. He soon got to the other side.

"Made it!" he called back down to Holland and Klefbom. It required some effort to get up here, but it wasn't too bad.

It was mostly a subconscious decision on Holland's part to try and step in the same places that Aden had been in. Maybe that was more of his military training kicking in. Even after all the years since he ditched it, he still couldn't quite shake it from his mind. The thought somewhat aggravated him. While he had been proud of his military career while he was a soldier, he looked on those days less fondly now. It was interesting just how they looked when he no longer wore the uniform.

He had to place his feet carefully as he climbed. While his boots weren't slippery, they weren't meant for mountain climbing. If he was going to fall, he wasn't going to do it because he slipped on a stupid loose rock.

He was hoping he didn't fall at all.

He got to the top of the pathway. It looked like they reached their destination now. Holland stretched his hands over his head, feeling the stretch throughout his body. One wouldn't think you could get so full of aches after what didn't feel like a long walk, but the motion of trying to get up a mountain could do that. Going downhill was typically easier, but they were still going to have to climb and it was harder to climb downward because you couldn't quite see where you were going.

"It's nice up here," he said, turning on the spot as he looked around at their surroundings. "Nice view." While they were up here, they might also well rest for the climb down.

Klefbom waited until Holland was far up the path before he followed him, claws easily digging into the dirt and rock. Aden wasn't entirely sure why he chose to climb up this time. Before they met Holland, the dragon didn't seem to care whether he was climbing or flying, and he did both on the way up. Now he was putting more effort into it. Maybe having someone new around made him think that he couldn't just take the easy way up.

Dragons had a lot of pride, apparently.

"I know, right?" Aden agreed when Holland commented on their surroundings. "Never really got to climb any mountains back in my world. More of an ocean kinda guy." And he still was, even though the farm he and Calcifer ran together was far inland. At least the ocean of his world had plenty of things to climb scattered throughout it. And his frequent trips up and down Ymir had been enough to teach him the basics of climbing mountains.

Ymir was a lot like a mountain. Gigantic and unless he had somewhere to go, he was unmovable. The big guy would stand in one spot all day if he didn't have anything to do. Aden had long since assumed that the golem was content with standing still, as long as he got fresh air, water and sunlight. Ymir was part-plant, after all.
