Amaterasu

It was strange, but there was something really off about how normal Silent Hill could be at times. Amaterasu preferred the town to be either cloaked in fog, or... that other phase. Those, she could understand and deal with. When the town was normal, that was when it was the strangest to her.

She made her way down the street like any stray dog would. Like most of the world's residents, the townsfolk left her alone, understanding that she wasn't a regular mutt. But she was also one that didn't go out of her way to attack people, which was probably why people were so tolerant of her going wherever she pleased. The wolf was also capable of purchasing stuff, which she knew was part of the reason why shopkeepers didn't mind her browsing their wares.

Amaterasu wasn't doing that today. Instead, she was just wandering the town, following any strange scent she could pick up.

And there were a lot of them. Quite a few didn't seem to go anywhere, but she knew better. She was probably picking up ones that crossed or overlapped more than one of the town's phases. The problem was that she couldn't tell unless she actually followed the trails to the end, or at least to as far as she could follow them. There was also that feeling that the town could shift at any time, and that something could attack her even in its peaceful state...

Getting a little bored of trying to track things but being unable to actually catch them, Amaterasu found a spot off the side of the nearby road to watch cars go by. She wasn't planning to chase them, although judging by how some of the vehicles picked up speed when they saw her sitting there, their drivers were worried that she would.

Aha! Silent Hill! Oogie Boogie's old haunt!

... New haunt?

It didn't matter! Oogie Boogie had returned to some place in this blasted, confusing world he had gone to before. This time though, there was something weird about it that he couldn't quite place his finger on. Something was different, but he couldn't recall just what it was that made this place so odd to him.

Oogie Boogie walked down the street, eyes narrowed. He studied the area around him, watching cars go by and humans walk by. The occasional non-human also made their way through, but Oogie Boogie paid as little attention to them as he did everything else.

Just what was different about this place?

Oogie Boogie stopped by the side of the road, scratching his head and not noticing the dog that was seated not too far away from him.

"I don't get it," he said out loud. There was clear befuddlement in his voice. Maybe this wasn't really Silent Hill. Maybe he was somewhere else. It was only then that he turned and noticed the dog. "Hey, you. Are we in Silent Hill?"

Now, there was something Amaterasu didn't see everyday. And she got to see a lot of weird things on a daily basis. There was a creature clearly resembling a sack of some kind. The scent she picked up from him was that of old burlap and live insects. A ton of them - she was able to pick out each and every kind that must be crawling around inside of him. He seemed confused about being here.

She couldn't blame him.

When he noticed her sitting here, he asked if they were in Silent Hill. The wolf barked a positive reply. Yes, this town was Silent Hill, even if it didn't seem to be Silent Hill. A lot of people knew about it due to its stranger phases and the dangers that came with them. It was odd, visiting the town when she didn't have to worry about that.

The wolf made a positive reply, signifying that they were indeed in the real Silent Hill. Huh. This was not what Oogie Boogie was expecting. Did he remember Silent Hill right? He was pretty sure the place he'd been in before was nothing like this place. Sure, some of the buildings looked similar, but it had been all dark and misty and spooky before. Just the way he liked things.

Not like this. This was far too human. Oogie Boogie wasn't a fan of humans. Humans were annoying. It was one of the reasons that he liked terrorizing them. They were so stupid that they deserved to be scared.

But, there was nothing scary about this place.

"I don't like this Silent Hill," he announced out loud to anyone who was listening. "How do I make it go back to how it was before?" He turned to address the wolf again as he spoke. If she knew that they were in the right place, then she probably knew how to make it go back to the way it was before.

Wait... he wanted the town to go back to one of its other phases? Most people were happy when it was normal like this. Amaterasu supposed that a big sack of crawling bugs would prefer one of the spookier phases. And in a way, she did, too - she knew what to expect whenever she was roaming around in the fog, or the... other side.

She didn't mind the fog. The other phase sapped at both her energy and her ink, which wasn't really good for her.

Anyway, there wasn't really a way to change Silent Hill to the form one wanted it to be in. Amaterasu answered by letting out a small huff and then curling up on the ground - if the sack wanted the town to change, then all he could really do was hang out in the area and wait for it to do so. That could be really boring, she knew, and it almost seemed random when the town shifted and how long it stayed in any one of its phases.

Oogie Boogie stared at the dog for a moment longer. Huh. It didn't seem like there was a way to switch Silent Hill back to one of its superior forms manually, so if he wanted to see it that way, he was going to have to wait for it. That was annoying. Oogie was not the most patient of people, and he was going to require something to entertain himself with while he waited.

His stomach made a rumble as it thought. He was going to have to feed himself first.

Oogie went and flopped himself down onto the grass next to the dog, making the ground rumbled a little with his weight hitting it. From within his storage in his gut, he produced a large fast food bag, opening it and pulling out the large carton of french fries. He had picked these up at some human place. They had been rude and didn't give them for free, but he was able to super-super size them and that was okay by him.

And, there weren't any lingering bugs on them, not that it mattered to him. He was practically made up bugs. He delicately picked up his first fry and popped it in his mouth. Delicious.

It seemed like they were waiting together. Amaterasu wasn't really waiting - she didn't mind if the town remained this way the entire time she was here - but it wasn't like she had anything else to do right now. Leaving required effort, something she wasn't keen on at the moment. It was one of those times when she felt like being lazy.

Nobody was in danger right now, so lazy she was going to be.

The sack had whipped out a large bag of food and the goddess really wished he hadn't. It smelled so good and it was highly distracting. He had fries and she was trying her best not to beg ask for one. She only did that when her friends were around. And only if they had something like bacon, which was one of the great wonders of this planet.

Head resting in the grass, she forced herself to stare at a bumblebee buzzing around nearby. Amaterasu didn't mind bees. They were very important to life in many worlds, including this one.

Oogie Boogie munched on the french fries he had withdrawn from his stomach. Within him there were several compartments that he could organize his stomach to. It was one of the benefits of being a creature such as himself. Humans were weak, which was why they couldn't do such things. Things that went into their mouths went all to the same place.

Oogie glanced at the dog, who was staring intently at a bee. Bees were nice, and Oogie Boogie liked them. They stung people and sometimes those people died from an allergic reaction. That meant the bee died as well, but some sacrifices needed to be made from humans to suffer like they deserved to.

The wolf was probably hungry, especially since she was able to smell the glorious food that Oogie had brought with him. How poor for her. She should starve.

Then again, Oogie mused to himself, she did answer his question when he asked and good subjects were always rewarded. So, Oogie pulled a pack of chicken nuggets out of his stomach as well. They didn't contain any slobber or bugs on them - again they were properly compartmentalized. He tossed them over to her without a word or a glance, and continued eating his french fries.

The moment the pack hit the grass, Amaterasu's head snapped up and she stared at it. That looked like food. More importantly, it smelled like food. She prodded the pack with her nose, pushing the lid up. It was food - chicken nuggets, in fact. If they tasted as good as they smelled, then that would be just fantastic!

It didn't matter if she had eaten something earlier today - Amaterasu snapped up the tasty morsels as if she was starving. Her tail wagged in both happiness and appreciation for her sack companion, who had been so thoughtful! Now she really did hope that the town would shift, so all his waiting paid off and he could go about doing whatever he planned to do.

Goddess she may be, she couldn't change the town for him, but there had to be something she could do to repay him. It would probably end up involving more food. He seemed to really like food. Like Riki, if Riki was much larger and was made of bugs.

Oogie Boogie snacked as he stared out forlornly at the street. A pickup truck drove by; its back was full of wood. It looked like someone was going to have a campfire. If only they would set the entire town on fire since it was so utterly boring like this. Why couldn't the Goddess simply leave Silent Hill in the form it should be in?

He finished his french fries and promptly eat the wrapper they came in. Unlike before, this time it went into his gut as oppose to wherever it was in him that he tended to store things. He didn't need to save it because he no longer had any need for it. He wasn't like humans who saved useless things for no reason, and he wasn't like them being incapable of digesting such things.

He was bored sitting here to wait. Oogie Boogie had never been the most patient of people, after all. He was going to find something interesting about this town.

"There needs to be something to do in this hell hole when it's not in its proper form," Oogie Boogie announced as he stood up. He brushed himself off as much as his short arms were capable of doing. That was an indication for the wolf to follow him. If not, he was going to get his chicken nuggets back. He started off down the street.

Amaterasu finished off her chicken nuggets quickly. She didn't mess around when there was food to be eaten. That would just be an excuse for something to swoop in and steal your meal. Nobody - especially her - wanted to have their food taken away from them while they were in the middle of eating it!

It looked like they were going to wander around now. That was probably better than just sitting around doing nothing. Amaterasu would've preferred naptime, but at least there might be something to do around here while they were waiting.

Yawning, the wolf stretched, then picked up the empty packaging and tossed it into the nearest garbage bin. Then she padded after the sack, as if following him was a normal thing for her to be doing.

Oogie Boogie's feet barely made a noise on the ground as he walked along the street - not on the sidewalk but on the paved street itself. The sidewalk was typically where the humans were walking and it was annoying having to constantly knock them out of his way. Sometimes when he did that in the bigger settlements, the cops were called to attempt to arrest him.

Not that it ever worked. Oogie Boogie was a king, and he was above jail.

But where was something interesting to keep a king's mind in this place?

As he walked, he heard a commotion further down the street. He was unable to see anything, so he turned towards the dog. Dogs had noses (Oogie, of course, possessed no such thing). They used their noses to sniff things.

"You," he said, pointing purposefully at her. "Find whatever loud noise that is." Then, he would assess if it was worth their time.

Well, his time. He didn't care about the mutt's time.

Find what caused that noise. Got it. Amaterasu didn't really need her nose for that - it was loud enough that she could just pinpoint where it was from the sound alone. But still, there might be some kind of clue hidden in whatever scent she could pick up, so she sniffed the ground. Most of the scents she found were ones she already knew about. Humans, animals, plants, vehicles, garbage.

Also, the scents she must be picking up from the town's other phases - the kind of scents that no normal animal, no matter how sharp their noses were, could ever detect. As a goddess, her senses were much stronger, allowing her to explore the world in a different way than others.

The scent Amaterasu honed in on was normal enough, but it seemed to be coming from where that commotion was. She barked at the sack and then started following the trail, her nose close to it. Wherever this led them, she hoped it was interesting. Something that would help them pass the time. Hopefully, not something that involved fighting. Or work. That nap was still sounding pretty good in her head.

Oogie Boogie waited, his foot tapping almost impatiently, as the dog figured out where the scent was coming from. It looked like she had managed to do that simple task and was now leading him towards it. Good. If she couldn't do even that, then she was going to be a fairly shitty minion and Oogie Boogie couldn't deal with minions who couldn't complete the simplest of tasks.

For a moment, he was reminded of Lock, Shock and Barrel who probably only had a fifty percent success rate in the things he made them do. They had a huge habit of screwing things up for him. In fact, most of his problems were their fault.

In comparison, the minions he had been granted in this world were better to work with. More obedient even. It was no wonder - this world was more appropriately treating him like the king he was. Sure, Radiant Garden was his only location right now, but his kingdom would expand as he took other places over. He was sure of it.

When they came across the loud ruckus, Oogie Boogie was able to make out a cluster of humans who were dressed in the typical garb of the people of this town. But, there were two of among them that looked out of place.

Oogie Boogie couldn't figure out why. Maybe it was the dark splotches that were forming on their bodies. They seem to be why everyone was making a fuss.

Amaterasu was unsurprised when they found a bunch of humans clustered together. That was what humans did - whenever something happened, they gathered around to see it. Sometimes even when it was dangerous to their health. It was something she didn't quite understand, but she normally assumed that they did it out of curiosity. Her own curiosity had gotten her into trouble before.

And what were these people worrying about? A couple of ghouls, apparently. Amaterasu could literally smell the taint in them. Now that she was close, it wasn't overpowered by the other scents that covered this town.

One ghoul was yelling something and grasping at a mailbox, like that would save him from the agony he must be feeling. The other suddenly lunged for a guy who was standing nearby. While the other humans started yelling more, Amaterasu simply passed through the crowd and slammed her head into the ghoul's stomach, knocking her off her feet.

Sitting on her rear, the ghoul screamed obscenities at the wolf. Amaterasu looked uninterested, but she knew that these two being here was an issue. The taint that was eating them up was somewhat contagious. She was probably immune, but these humans...
