Kay hummed along to the radio that she had recently placed in her tank as she drove. It was a shame that tanks didn't normally come with a radio, but she could also see why. You probably shouldn't be bopping along to some tunes when you were going to war. That could probably get you in big trouble.

But, Kay wasn't going to war. She was driving her M4 Sherman through the Deep Roads. ...Which was probably as dangerous as going to war, but she was in her tank that was tough enough to take blasts from even the craziest of mages that could be found here (she even had it tested at the College because one could never be too certain about these things!). She hadn't' actually seen any darkspawn yet, though. She had found the nearest opening to Santa Destroy and had managed to fit her tank inside, but there hadn't been any darkspawn.

Maybe they didn't come so close to the surface. Was that a good thing? Kay had heard all sorts of bad stuff about darkspawn, but she hadn't actually seen one before. In person, anyways. Sometimes, the Santa Destroy local news had a report on them, but she only been half paying attention to any of those. News was never her thing, even at home. Only her mother watched it on occasion. If her dad was there, he'd be watching baseball.

Or, pro-tankery matches. Her dad had good tastes.

Anyways, her she was, in the Deep Roads with a M4 Sherman, paying some pop music. She wasn't one of those special people who thought they were above current pop music. They were so stupid to listen to when they tried acting superior. Maybe that was one of the reasons she liked to pay it so loudly when she could. She would do that at practice at home, if any of her teammates were feeling extra superior.

Paying attention to make sure she didn't ram her tank into anything, she turned a corner, going in deeper.

After hearing all kinds of tales from pirates in a Sabaody pub, Faris knew better than to venture into the Deep Roads, now that she and some of her crew were on a trip heading into one of the world's two continents. In fact, she wouldn't even be down here if all of the men she had brought with her would just stay put where she left them (in this instance, a camp outside of Santa Destroy with five barrels of rum). Unfortunately, her newest lad had wandered off while she wasn't looking, and it didn't take a genius to follow his footprints to a large opening into the underground tunnels.

So she had to go in. Some of the other men had offered to accompany her to search for him, but it was dangerous, and they were wasted at this point. No point in dragging them along. Faris followed the lad's footprints - good thing he had such dirty boots - deeper into the tunnels, where the branches they led down occasionally coincided with the tracks of some large, heavy vehicle.

Faris was wondering what it could be, but the answer eventually revealed itself on its own, rolling around a corner and onto the path she was currently following. The captain simply went up a pile of debris on the side of the road, waiting for it to pass by.

It was strange, but it wasn't enough to surprise her; something had to be pretty extraordinary before it could do anything of the sort.

Kay sang along with the song that she was playing in her tank. It really was super lucky that the music echoed in a good way in here. It was possible for things to echo in a bad way. Echoes were normally fun, but it really sucked when they echoed in a bad way. The song finished, and she went quiet, focusing more on the path ahead of her. She hadn't seen any darkspawn in a long while...

Wait a minute.

There was someone there, and they had moved out of her way. That was definitely not a darkspawn thing to do. The last time she had encountered a darkspawn anywhere and they had noticed her, they had hopped up onto her tank, thinking they were going to break into it. With a sword. With a sword. Not even magic, but a sword. How silly could they be? It hadn't worked, of course. Kay had also driven her tank around as wildly as she could and thrown them off, zipping off and leaving them behind before they were capable of doing anything else. It had been pretty wild.

But, this person... They weren't a darkspawn. They looked human. Kay slowed her tank right down, though she didn't properly park it in case she needed to get moving quickly again. She climbed up to the opening and pushed open the hatch.

"Heeeeeey!" she called out to the person. She squinted at them. They looked rather... "Heeeeey, did anyone tell you that you dress like a pirate?" She had watched a lot of pirate themed movies. She knew what a pirate looked like, definitely!

Oh? It stopped. Faris was hoping it would just go by, allowing her to continue on with her search. But the vehicle had stopped and a girl appeared from its hatch. A rather loud girl. This wasn't exactly a place one should be loud in... then again, the vehicle she was in looked rather sturdy. She probably thought that the darkspawn down here wouldn't be a problem.

Anyway, this might actually be an opportunity. Trying to remember her manners - what passed for manners to her, at least - Faris exhaled and approached, although she kept a respectable distance away. Just in case the girl decided that she didn't like pirates and tried to run her over.

"That would be because I am a pirate, lass," she replied. She didn't just dress the part - she had a ship, a crew and everything else that landlubbers would assume pirates would have. Except for the hook, eyepatch and parrot.

Syldra was much better than some fleabitten, feathered mimic.

"An odd place to find pirates, I'm sure. Have you seen another scurrying about?" That lad was getting punished once she dragged him out of here. If he was still alive.

Kay's mouth popped open to form a small "o". This guy was seriously a pirate! Like Blackbeard or Calico Jack or Ching Shih! A pirate! Kay had really liked stories about pirates growing up. They had always seemed so cool and dashing when you were reading about them being the good guys, even if they were doing a few dastardly things. Kay wasn't stupid though. She knew they were criminals. She also knew this world was kind of whacked out so you couldn't always use the same logic for everything.

Besides, Kay wasn't really scared of being in front of a pirate. She came equipped with a tank. It had live ammo in it right now (for blowing up darkspawn if she needed to do just that). She would use it if she needed to, and a pirate couldn't move as fast as a girl who knew her way around a tank the way that Kay did. She didn't like the prospect of shooting someone. She preferred not killing anyone, but Kay also knew the world she was in was dangerous and shit happened. She was old enough; she could handle it.

"Cooool!" was what she said out loud. "I have not seen any pirates besides you." And, that was the truth. She hadn't seen much of anything. And, she said as much out loud. "I haven't seen anything in a while. Not even a darkspawn. It's kind of weird, really. They're normally everywhere." That would have been such a casual thing to say if someone was familiar with darkspawn. They were freaky deaky things. "Did you lose, like, a crew member or something?" Pirates had crews. It was understandable. Though weird, considering where they were.

"Aye. Although I didn't so much lose him as he wandered off on his own," Faris replied, annoyed. The annoyance wasn't directed towards the girl, but rather the fact that the captain was down here in the first place for what seemed like the stupidest of reasons. This could've all been avoided if that idiot had just stayed in camp! "Blasted greenhorn. He'd better hope that I'm in a forgiving mood when I track him down."

And if she wasn't, then he was going to wish that he died here. She didn't take acts of such stupidly so lightly!

"Might prove to be a boon, though, if the darkspawn are scarce. I may find the scoundrel alive after all." Even if there were darkspawn prowling these tunnels, Faris would still search for him. The lad was an idiot, but he was part of her crew, and she wouldn't leave anyone behind, even if it meant more effort and danger for her. Faris never shied away from danger - she took it head on, consequences be damned.

Kay nodded in understanding. She had dealt with newbies in her club, too. Maybe a club wasn't exactly the same thing as a pirate crew, but she was sure there were some similarities. Sometimes, the girls, who even if they displayed all sorts of calm and collect while they were still at the school, but the second they left and got into a tank, they were running off. They were so excited - or so nervous - to be in a tank, that they weren't paying any attention to the actual training they were supposed to. More than once, Kay had to stop practice to go locate them, as their practice grounds were huge and the girls had gotten lost.

"I feel ya," she said out loud to the pirate. "Sometimes, newbies wander about. This is a shitty place to be wandering though." If he had gotten lost in the city, it would have been aggravating to deal with. But, also, there was a lot less danger and there would be people there to help look for him. In the Deep Roads, he was bound to be attacked by darkspawn. And, if he didn't know how to deal with them, then he was in trouble.

"You want a ride?" she asked. "You might find him faster. And, you're less likely to be tainted." The longer he roamed around down here, the more likely he was going to get tainted himself. Her tank was fine; it had been blessed by some priest. She forgot who they worshiped, but she had heard a mage from the College talk about that god before. Either way, she was totally fine against the taint for the moment.

Faris raised an eyebrow when the girl asked if she wanted a ride. She just learned that she was a pirate, and she offered her a ride anyway. Pirates had a tendency to steal the vessels they find, but Faris assumed that the girl didn't think she would do such a thing.

In this case, she'd be correct. Finding the lad was a priority, and Faris didn't have any time to waste trying to figure out how to drive the damn thing. And the girl was... nice enough, she supposed. She didn't shoot at her. Faris had an idea of the damage that cannon at the front of the vehicle could inflict.

"Alright, lass," she replied with a nod. "We'll find that greenhorn together and drag his sorry ass back to the surface." Faris wasn't afraid of darkspawn - her powers were more than a match for any tainted creature living below ground - but she had heard of the corruption that seeped into every fiber of their being. She'd rather not experience the taint firsthand, because apparently there was no going back once one was infected by it.

That lad had better not do anything else that was so reckless. It occurred to Faris what she may have to do if he had.

Cool! So they were going to go adventuring in the Deep Roads together!

...Well, sort of. They had an actual, proper, serious goal in mind that they needed to accomplish. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. Not that the Deep Roads could be sunshine and rainbows, but it was nice of a girl to dream, right? She would have liked to live in a place that didn't have a location that was crawling with darkspawn. But, she also felt it wasn't a very nice thing to wish darkspawn could have just never existed. They didn't choose to be that way, did they? She wasn't sure. Maybe she would go look it up someday.

"Hop on in, then!" she called before disappearing into the hatch again. She needed to wait for the pirate to get inside and pick a seat. Then, she could close up and get rolling again.

Kay wasn't exactly sure where the other pirate they would be searching for could be. But, if he wasn't in here all too long, he could be too far away. And, they were in a tank that could do a decent speed and cover more ground than a person can by simply walking.

Or, running, if they were being chased by darkspawn.

Faris walked over to the vehicle, stepped up onto its surface, and made her way up to the hatch. She peered down it before climbing inside, settling onto the first empty seat she found. There were others, but she wasn't feeling particularly picky about where she sat. As long as this thing got them going, then that was what mattered.

"More room in here than I thought," she commented, taking a moment to study the position of the seats and the controls, figuring out what each of them did on her own. Again, she wasn't here to steal it, but as someone who owned a ship, she couldn't help but try to figure out in her head how it moved. It was possible she might have to steal one of these someday. Not today, and not from someone who had been nice enough to help her find one of her crew in what could essentially be the depths of hell.

Not quite what she was expecting to do when she set out to search for the lad, but she had done stranger things before. Far stranger.

Kay waited, balanced on her knees on a seat, until the pirate was inside. Then she scrambled back to the hatch and pulled it close, letting it lock in place. She normally didn't do that during matches. It had been a very rare thing for her to lock the tank at all back home. But, the tank came with a lock for battles, in case enemies climbed on top and attempted to get inside to attack the people operating it. Because they were in the Deep Roads, Kay thought it was important to keep it locked. She couldn't fight a darkspawn up close. Not one chance in a million.

"It's an American M4 Sherman," she said brightly, as she climbed over to the driver's seat again. She started the tank up again. Because of the closed quarters, she let it move slowly at first, until there would be more space to speed up. Sometimes, tanks took a little bit too. This tank could probably pick up speed faster than some others she knew. Most of the time, it came up to tank size. "It requires a team for full operation. Some tanks can be used by a single person, but those are often smaller ones. Maybe used for recon."

Kay's voice sounded excited as she spoke. It always sounded excited when she spoke about tanks.

"I'm Kay, by the way," she said.

A strange name for a machine, but Faris had been hearing a lot of similar names for the machines on this planet. The girl pointed out something she had already guessed - the tank required a team so it could operate at its fullest potential. "Just like a ship and her crew," she remarked. "Everyone plays their part."

The girl sounded rather excited, talking about this thing. Maybe she felt the same way Faris felt about ships, although the captain normally didn't get so excited talking about them. Not something she really did.

"Faris," she replied when the girl introduced herself as Kay. While Faris was well aware by now that the name she had used all these years wasn't exactly her real name, she still used it. Her crew called her that, her friends called her that... the only ones who didn't were the people at the castle. She wasn't cut out for being a princess, so she continued being a pirate. Faris was who she shall be for the rest of her days.

Faris? Faris was a pretty cool name! It even sounded like the type of name one would expect to hear of a pirate. She couldn't think of any other occupation that was more fitting for the name than pirate. Maybe some people were just born to do a specific thing. Like her and tankery! She was going to be a pro-tankery player when she was older and graduated from high school. She was still debating on university, even if she knew it was kind of late in the school year for applying. She could just take a year off (or could have, whatever). She would go straight into the pros, if she was allowed. And, when she finished that, coaching was always an option!

Just thinking about tankery put Kay into a good mood. She was tempted to turn her music back on - blast her pop music super loud - but it might have been a disturbance to Faris. Pirates didn't have pop music, did they? They probably sang... sea shanties and all that. Sea shanties were pretty cool, she guessed. She didn't listen to them.

She wondered if she could find a CD with them.

"What exactly does this guy look like?" Kay asked. She was moving the tank slowly so it could take a sharp sloping corner.

It was a good question to ask, although Faris doubted that there were any other pirates stupidly wandering around in the Deep Roads, pissing off their captains with their idiocy. If there were, though, it was probably best if Kay could tell the lad apart from anyone else. Hopefully, whenever they did spot him, he wasn't food for the creatures down here yet.

"He's 'round your age, I'd figure. Short brown hair, piercings in his ears, scars on his arms. Dressed exactly how you think a pirate ought to dress." There was no mistaking what kind of occupation her crew had - they all dressed like pirates. Some of them had eyepatches, but Faris didn't bother with such things. The lad didn't wear one, either.

"Bit on the scrawny side, too." Now that Faris thought about it... maybe the creatures wouldn't eat him. Not enough meat on his bones to put in the effort of killing him for a meal, although she assumed the darkspawn would just try to kill him anyway.

Kay wasn't all that surprised that she was supposed to be looking for a typical pirate. The description Faris had given her definitely sounded like your run-of-the-mill pirate. Kay hadn't even realize that real pirates had a tendency to dress that way at all. She had always thought it was just a movie thing, where they had come up with a way to express what a pirate was supposed to be by appearance. They had done that with a lot of things, like vampires and ninjas and vikings. She had always thought pirates was another one.

Maybe there was truth in television after all.

"I dunno if the darkspawn care how much meat you have on your bones," Kay commented thoughtfully. She didn't think it would matter to them if you were scrawny or not. "I think they just kill you, and that's it. But, I don't really know. I never seen a darkspawn attack someone before." Kay honestly didn't want to, if she could help it. That was kind of why she had a tank.

She turned another corner. This one was easier to move.

"Have you been here long?" she asked, conversationally. It was always nice to her to know when people were new to the world or not. It fascinated her to know people were still coming.
