Amaterasu
© Jen // CURRENTLY Offline

Amaterasu huffed as she carefully stepped across the soggy ground. It didn't matter that she was capable of walking on water, so she shouldn't have to worry about sinking through this terrain. She just didn't want to be here.

The goddess had been tracking a Shadow Lopunny across the Eastern Continent, so she could purify it with her brush. The speedy critter had so far kept one hop ahead of her, and eventually the pursuit had led to this land of tough terrain and prowling undead. The scent of rotting corpses and the evil that caused it was rough on her sense of smell, and it had distracted her enough that she lost track of her quarry.

It was also rather wet where she currently was.

Once she had made it to more solid ground, Amaterasu sniffed the air. She had enough of the stench, but she needed to find out where that Lopunny had gone. It took her a moment to pick out a particular scent hidden deep within the rest of the air - the scent of a corrupted heart. As soon as she determined its path, she took off at full speed.

She had to find that rabbit before it ended up in even more trouble.

Holland had told Jack that the place called Kijuju was pulled from a world that had geography that mimicked his own and that it was from somewhere in Africa. It also apparently had zombies. He had never been to Africa, though he didn't recall a place called Kijuju there. Not that he was an expert on Africa or anything. He also wasn't very fond of zombies either, but Jack came equipped with a steadfast curiosity that saw him dropped off nearby and riding his D-Wheel into the area.

The Autonomous Zone in the name suggested that Kijuju wasn't just the city but also the surrounding swamp-like lands around it. Jack was careful to keep his D-Wheel off the lesser trampled terrain, as he didn't want to get stuck and have to dig it out. If that happened Jack would...

He didn't know what he would do. He just knew he was likely to be pissed.

As he drove, he noticed a familiar sight up ahead - a white wolf running.

"Ammy?" he said under his breath. He didn't know she was going to be here. Picking up speed on his D-Wheel, he went after her.

Amaterasu heard a vehicle behind her. Its distinctive quiet hum could only mean that it was a D-Wheel, and she could also pick up Jack's scent. That was surprising. She didn't think that he would come to this land without a good reason. All that riding through here would do was make his outfit and his D-Wheel less... white.

Her own white coat was currently spotted with dirt and mud, although that was the result of a scuffle she had with the Lopunny before she had chased it into Kijuju. Black was going to pounce on her the moment she headed back to the ship, she was certain. But he would have to wait to give her a bath - she wasn't going back until she cornered that Pokemon and saved it!

She spotted her quarry up ahead, bouncing through the swamp without even caring that one wrong move could be its last. Unfortunately, before she could get close enough to it, it spotted her. The Lopunny fled, making quick work of the distance. All Amaterasu could do was continue her pursuit, leaving an alternating trail of flowers and water lilies in her wake.

What exactly what Ammy doing? From Jack's spot, it looked a little like she was chasing after something, but he wasn't able to see what she was chasing.

Wait, no. He was able to see something running off ahead of her. He couldn't make out what it was, so he sped up, moving quickly. His D-Wheel was able to move really fast, otherwise it wouldn't have been as useful to him. He overtook Ammy, glancing at her. He was still some distance from her, but that was fine.

From here, he was able to see what it was she was chasing. It looked like a...

Jack had to think for a bit. What had Black and Wes called it? A Lopunny. That was what it was called, he was sure. If it wasn't, he didn't particularly care. Either way, it didn't matter to him. What he knew was that Ammy was chasing it, so he might as well help.

He picked up speed even faster, going at a speed that a vehicle from a different time period or even a different world might not have been able to muster. It was one of the perks of dueling in Neo Domino; their eye for advancement was often centered on things that made dueling easier.

He sped past the Lopunny and moved ahead of it, cutting it off so it skidded to a stop, clearly confused.

The Lopunny skidded to a stop. Amaterasu also skidded to a stop. There was a moment where the Pokemon frantically looked between the wolf and the duelist, trying to come up with its next move. A normal Lopunny might've quickly slipped out from between its pursuers and continued fleeing across the landscape. Or it could've tried to jump over either one of them - it was strong enough to do that.

Instead, this one screamed.

Cloaking itself in a purple aura, the Lopunny lunged towards Jack. Amaterasu jumped between him and the Pokemon, knocking it back with a swipe from Solar Flare. Instead of switching to something different, the Lopunny tried it again and again, forcing the goddess to deflect the attacks each time. None of the attacks were getting past her, yet the Lopunny just kept trying, not even concerned about its own welfare.

There was this moment where everything seemed to freeze and no one was moving. Jack stared at the Pokemon before him as it seemed to try and figure out what it was supposed to be doing. Even Ammy wasn't moving for that moment of time.

And, then the Pokemon started screaming.

"Jesus Christ!" Jack snapped as he pressed his hands against his helmet, forcing it against his ears. The cushioned insides helped block out some of the sound, but not as much as he would have liked. There was a wince on his face as he looked back at them. He looked just in time for the Lopunny to lunge at him. Instinctively, he flinched, but Ammy got in between him and it before it was able to hit him. He was thankful for that as he wasn't sure what kind of attack that had been and if he was capable of deflecting it, but now wasn't the time to say anything. The Lopunny was still on the attack.

There was something wrong; it was simple enough for Jack to tell, but he wasn't sure what it was. He had seen a lot of things in his life that weren't quite right, and he knew it such a situation when it showed itself to him. He just wasn't sure what they were supposed to do about it.

"How do we stop that?" he asked, once it was clear it wasn't going to stop attacking Ammy. They could let it wear itself out, and yet that might have not had the desired results, seeing how the thing was determined to keep going.

Amaterasu wasn't attacking; she simply used Solar Flare to block the Lopunny's attacks. If she did attack the Pokemon, she wasn't sure if it would be able to handle it. She didn't want to harm it, if she was able to. Badly injuring Lopunny would be counterproductive to her goal of rescuing it from itself.

It might be an evolved Pokemon, but the goddess' strength far outmatched it. She had to be careful. Jack, too.

Amaterasu didn't have an answer for Jack, mostly because she couldn't actually speak to him. But she made a grunt and jerked her head, trying to suggest that he should go around and try distracting it. They needed the Lopunny to feel vulnerable, even if just for a moment. Hopefully then she could get through to it and use her brush to rip out the lock on its heart.

Without anyone getting hurt. Jack was able to defend himself, but Amaterasu promised to jump in if it made a surprise lunge for him again.

This Lopunny was persistent. Jack was sure now that there was something wrong with it, but he still couldn't place what it was. It probably explained why Ammy was chasing it in the first place as she wasn't the sort to normally chase down something like a Pokemon. He couldn't even imagine her trying to eat one, even if she was carnivorous most of the time.

But, that wasn't too important to think about right now. What they needed to do was knock it out, or something, so it wouldn't be trying to attack them so relentlessly.

Ammy couldn't speak - at least not in a way that a person like Jack would be able to understand her - but he assumed the gist of what she wanted was for him to distract it so she could subdue it. That was understandable enough, seeing as he already did something of the sort earlier by cutting it off.

Jack revved up his D-Wheel before driving it away from Ammy. He circled around a bit, as if he was leaving them completely, before coming up behind the Lopunny. Pointing his D-Wheel directly at it, he revved his engine, sliding only slightly towards it while otherwise breaking. It would look much like he was threatening to run it over.

Amaterasu kept her eyes on the Lopunny, even while Jack went behind it. As soon as he revved his engine, the Pokemon sprang away, only to turn around and face a set of sharp teeth. It promptly attacked Amaterasu again and when she deflected the strike, it spun around, cloaked itself in its purple aura again and launched itself at Jack.

As fast at it was, Amaterasu had gotten between it and Jack's D-Wheel in time, taking the blow. It didn't hurt her, as the impact was absorbed by her Godhood barrier. This time, she retaliated, slamming her head lightly into the Lopunny's chest.

Even though she hadn't put all her strength behind it, the headbutt was enough to send the Lopunny flying in an arc, crashing into the soggy ground. It still got up, dazed, and staggered towards them. Amaterasu whipped out her Celestial Brush and encircled it with her ink. The result was immediate - an explosion of flowers engulfed the Lopunny as its dark aura burst and dissolved away.

Amaterasu approached the Lopunny as it fell to the ground, unconscious. She examined it - she had freed it, but it looked like it needed medical attention. She carefully swung the Pokemon onto her back and padded back to her duelist friend. They weren't going to find any help out here, meaning she would have to carry it out. Unless Jack had a better idea?

Jack simply kept up his portion of the plan as Ammy worked whatever it was she was planning to do in the first place. He wasn't even sure what they were doing to begin with, but clearly Ammy had some sort of task to accomplish against the Pokemon.

When she knocked it out, Jack stopped his D-Wheel, setting one foot down against the dirt. He felt the soft squish of the marshy, swampy ground beneath it. He made a face, though he quickly dropped it once Ammy approached him with the Pokemon of her back.

He frowned at it. Clearly, it was injured. Normally, he would simply think that it probably deserved them because it was attacking them, but he had understood there was something wrong with it as well. Clearly, it needed some sort of medical attention.

"The city isn't too far from here," he said. Kijuju was the name of the autonomous region they were in, but there was also a city that bared the same name and Jack knew it wasn't too far away. "There's people someone there who can help it." The city wasn't some high-tech metropolis like Neo Domino, but it was probably better than Dunwall.

At least, half of it was better than Dunwall. He heard there was a class divide in the city. As someone who grew up in Satellite, he disliked the concept but he would live with it if he had to.

"This way," he said, turning his D-Wheel and taking off.

Oh right, there was a city nearby. Amaterasu hadn't been there yet. While she liked roaming this planet, she usually avoided this end of the Eastern Continent because of how soggy it was. She didn't mind the dirt, but she didn't like getting wet. That was why she ran over the ocean instead of swimming in it.

Also because she was a poor swimmer - her normally limitless stamina failed her whenever she had to paddle through water. Not that she would admit it to anyone, though. Nobody needed to know.

With a bark, Amaterasu ran after Jack, mindful of her passenger. She didn't have to worry about Lopunny waking up and attacking them again - she had opened up its heart and purified it. Or was it a she? She thought it was a she. Anyway, they were off to get Lopunny some help. Hopefully, there was someone in the city who knew how to treat injured Pokemon, and that they wouldn't be delayed by any of the undead on their way there.

In a lesser vehicle, driving through the swampy environment around them would have been way more difficult. But, the Wheel of Fortune was far superior than most other vehicles. It didn't get too bothered by the terrain it needed to traverse upon. Jack wasn't sure if that would be the case if he stopped. The D-Wheel might get stuck then. He wasn't going to risk that right now. Not until he reached the city.

It was lucky he looked at the maps of this place too, getting a good study of them. Otherwise, he might have gotten lost. This place was huge. Probably one of the biggest in the world for a region, right up there with Briggs and the various forests.

But, there it was, looming in the distance. The walled city of Kijuju.

Jack drove until he reached it. The gate was closed, but that was too be expected, considering there were zombies roaming around in the swamp.

He stopped in front of the gate. He could tell whoever was up there was checking them out since their heads popped over the top. When they disappeared, he assumed they were going to go open the gate. They just had to wait now.

Amaterasu kept up with Jack's D-Wheel. It was easy for her. Not only was she one of the fastest runners on this planet, she had unlimited endurance. Vehicles could break down and creatures could wear themselves out to the point of dying from exhaustion, but she would outlast them all. As long as there wasn't something out there bent on stopping her.

The city's walls soon appeared in her sights. Once they arrived, she slowed to a stop, waiting as the people guarding the gate made their assessments of them. To many humans, the appearance of a wolf was enough reason for them to keep their gates shut and even open fire. Amaterasu was with Jack, however, so maybe they would think she was tame.

If they didn't recognize her outright. The goddess was known for roaming both continents. With her appearance, it was difficult for anyone to mistake her for any old wolf.

After a moment, the gate opened, granting them access to the city. Someone else appeared, his rifle pointed not at them but at the landscape beyond. The undead might be attracted to this spot by the sound of the gate; the people living here weren't about to let any of them follow visitors into the city.

Once the gates were opened, someone appeared, clearly on the outlook out for the zombies who roamed the lands. Seeing as Kijuju was deposited here with the zombies, Jack knew the man was likely to be experienced in the task. It must have come as something bitter when the Kijuju landscape was transported here with the rest of the city. Not only was their home pulled from their world into another, but it brought the one thing it would have been nice to get away from.

While the man was doing his search, Jack rode his D-Wheel through the gate. Once they were safely inside, the man re-entered and the gate started to close behind them.

Kijuju was interesting to look at as a city. It wasn't entirely run down. There were wealthy parts to the city like any other while it also sported a slum. A river ran through the city, dividing the two sections. Jack's understanding of the place was that it was mostly isolated in its home world, which made sense to him.

He rode the D-Wheel to down the main street until he found an open parking lot. He rode into there and parked the D-Wheel. Vehicles weren't as common on these streets as they were in Neo Domino and he didn't know the place. It would be easier to get a good look of the place on foot.

Time to find somewhere that would look after a Pokemon.

Amaterasu followed Jack into the city and to the parking lot. As she waited for him, she took a look around. Maybe if she was lucky, she could spot a sign to a clinic or something. Unlike a lot of other wolves, she could actually read. It didn't matter what language the words were in, although she wasn't sure if that was the result of some natural ability she had as a goddess, or the universal removal of the language barrier that was in place in this world.

No matter. She didn't see a sign.

But she did notice the next best thing - Pokemon scents. Amaterasu was certain that one of them was an Eevee - they smelled similar to their evolutions, like the twins living on the Axolotl. Another was a Clefairy like the ones living at Mt. Moon. The rest, she wasn't completely sure of, but there was definitely something about their scents that screamed Pokemon to her.

Nudging Jack's leg with her head, she headed off in that direction, Lopunny still draped on her back.
