The sun was already below the horizon as Armstrong led the way to Trost District. After Arystar had left him and Miranda to go seek out things on his own, the Major and his companions went off on their own as well. His hope was to be able to get back to Briggs soon. While he was no longer in his home of Amestris, that didn't mean that he didn't have duties to his fellow soldiers who were here in this world. He needed to, at the very least, drop by.

But, the journey to Briggs needed to be left for another day. For now, they needed to find somewhere to rest for the night. Trost District was the closest settlement to them once the sun started to set, and so Armstrong had gone mildly off course to reach it. It was getting quite dark now, with the moon beginning to show and the sun no longer around, but it wasn't too late to find evening accommodations.

"We're almost there," he announced to Miranda and Pikachu.

The statement was almost unneeded. The wall loomed over them, blocking up the moon and some of the stars, and casting a deep shadow over them. Even so, it didn't intimidate Armstrong. In fact, he could practically feel in the air how the building was created to protect.

The gateway looked like it was ushering in the last travelers as well. It looked like they had made it just in time.

Miranda stifled a yawn and rubbed a gloved hand over one of her eyes. "That's... that's good," she mumbled in reply. They had done so much walking today and she was feeling tired. Some exorcists could walk for hours on end, but they were far more athletic than her. And while one of her talents that set her apart from her friends in the Order was the ability to stay awake for days, she could only really do that if she was seriously worrying about something or focusing on using her Time Record.

She and Pikachu looked up at the tall wall, which blocked most of their view of the night sky. Clearly, it was meant to protect what was inside, while keeping out a particular kind of danger.

"We should hurry on in... before the gate closes." Miranda wasn't keen on the idea of staying outside at night. While she and her friends had done that before during their travels, she felt uneasy at the idea that there might be something so dangerous out here that this settlement required such a wall to keep them out. Maybe the Goddess had been nice and left those dangers back in the world Trost District was from, but... you know...

Armstrong nodded. If the gate was going to close for the evening, which it looked like it was, he wanted to be on the other side of it. Otherwise, they were going to have to look for somewhere else to stay for the night, and he wasn't sure how much farther his companions would be able to walk. It would be another long distance more on foot to get to the next nearest settlement.

He got to where the gatekeepers were and approached one. "Party of three," he said, seeing as the man had a clipboard. It didn't look like he needed any personal information from what Armstrong was able to spy on his clipboard. It only looked like he was trying to keep track of how many people were coming in at this late hour. Probably in case there were crimes, so the authorities would be able to track a party of the suspected number.

The man glanced at Armstrong and then at Miranda and Pikachu. He scribbled something down before pointing his pen at the gate. "Hurry on in," he said. "We're closing up in about fifteen minutes."

Armstrong nodded before leading his group inside. At least now that they were in the walls, he felt better.

"We needed to find somewhere to stay," he said. If all else failed, they could sleep outdoors. Armstrong didn't mind that so much. Sometimes, it was necessary.

When they approached the gate, there was someone there, writing things down. Miranda assumed he was keeping track of visitors, and it wasn't long before she and her two friends were through the gate. She felt quite relieved to be on the other side of that wall. It actually felt a lot safer in here, even if she knew that there was a chance that the danger the wall had been built to protect against might not even be in this world at all.

There were plenty of other things out there that were dangerous. If Miranda had been living by herself on this planet, with no friends to travel around with, she'd probably stay home until someone from the Order found her.

"Maybe there's an inn nearby?" she suggested. "I wish I had a map of this place..." Throughout their travels, Miranda had been acquiring maps of different areas in the world and they had proven to be quite useful. But they hadn't spent enough time here previously for her to buy one.

The atmosphere inside of the district was quite nice. Armstrong wondered if part of that was because they didn't have to deal with the large titan creatures he heard about, for which the walls that surrounded the town were built to keep out. He wasn't sure how he would like to live in a world with such creatures hounding settlements on a regular basis. He came equipped with alchemy but it didn't seem like that was the case with that world. It would make things all the harder for them.

He was thankful on their behalf that while they were whisked away to another world, they were in one where the usual threats back home weren't plaguing them. At least for their time here, they were being given a reprieve.

"I do wish as well," Armstrong said in reply to Miranda. A map would be nice. It would certainly help them find their way around. "As compensation though, I do come with a distinct sense of direction that can only be found PASSED DOWN THROUGH THE ARMSTRONG FAMILY FOR GENERATIONS." He coughed into his hand, as if covering up the rising in his voice.

"Follow me," he added more calmly before he started down the street.

Miranda didn't even blink when she noticed the rise in volume in Armstrong's voice. By now, she was so used to it that it was normal for her. The Major was especially loud during times of battle, but she had realized that they haven't been drawn into a lot of fights lately. That was something she was glad for; despite being an exorcist who should be used to battle, she preferred not being in them at all.

"Okay," she smiled at him before they headed off down the street. Pikachu waited until her human companions were walking side by side, then sprung from Miranda's shoulder to grab onto Armstrong's arm, gripping his sleeve. The Electric-type then climbed up to sit on his shoulder. Armstrong was a lot taller than Miranda, so Pikachu was able to see the town better from up here.

When Pikachu decided to climb onto his arm, he tilted his arm in a way to help make it easier for her to climb up. He smiled at her perched on his shoulder. She was such a lovely creature! He had never seen anything like her before coming to this world, but he was glad that, by chance, she was there for him and Miranda to meet. It made them a complete trio.

Or, quartet if he was to count their newest companion of Arystar Krory. He hoped the man was doing alright in his solo travels. Armstrong may have to seek him out afterward to make sure he was alright. The man greatly reminded Armstrong of Miranda, and while she was able to take care of herself, he felt better checking in on her every now and again when they weren't together.

As they walked, they passed by the occasional citizen who didn't do more than spare them a glance but Armstrong was sure that was because they were trying to wrap up their day so they could head home and not because they had any ill will towards the trio.

He walked down the main street they were following past a couple of blocks before a building with a sign caught his eye. It was old fashioned, and there were no lights on it but he could clearly make out the word 'inn' scrawled on it. It looked like he had gone in the right direction. His instincts had been correct!

Miranda found the place a little quiet. It was probably because of the time - everyone was wrapping up whatever they were doing so they could head on home. Most of the civilized areas in the world were like that - alive during the day, quiet during the night. Some businesses remained open into the wee hours of the morning, but even then, there were usually less people out and about.

Neo Domino was a city that was awake both day and night in some of its areas. Miranda recalled all the bright lights and signs downtown when she was there one evening. She hadn't seen anything like it in her world and it was actually kind of pretty to look at.

The sign they were approaching wasn't brightly lit, or even lit at all. But it did say that the building it was next to was an inn. "I hope there's some vacancy left..." she murmured. In some places, the inns and hotels really filled up at night because of all the visitors. She didn't think that Trost District was a hotspot for tourists, but even so...

Armstrong nodded to Miranda's hope that there would be some vacancies left for them. There was always a risk that a place like this would be full. It wasn't the largest of inns either. Armstrong normally didn't have an issue with inns as most locations in Amestris had some form of military occupation where he could stay at the barracks. But, coming here, he had gotten more used to figuring out evening accommodations.

He had a feeling this one would have a place for them. And an Armstrong's instincts were never wrong.

He pushed the door open, causing a small bell to jiggle. He was greeted with warmth and light from inside, where a fire was roaring in the hearth on the other side of the room. Instead of a desk, there was a table where an elderly woman looked as if she was doing a crossword by candlelight.

"Oh, hello," she said, looking up once she heard the jiggle. "Are you dears looking for a room?"

"Yes, we are," Armstrong agreed, politely. He stepped away from the door so Miranda and Pikachu would have room to enter as well.

What a lovely little place. It was so warm and inviting. Miranda had to smile at the sight while she stepped up to the table. The elderly woman set aside her crossword puzzle and opened up a ledger. "I only have one room left... two, if I count that other one. But I'm afraid that the last guest broke both the door and the window, and I couldn't possibly rent it out to you."

"B-Broke?" Miranda inquired.

"Why, yes. We heard some horrendous noises in the wee hours of the morning... woke everyone up. We found the door snapped in two and the window all smashed up. The man who was staying the night in there was gone. I asked the guards to look for him, but I haven't had any time to ask someone for repairs..." The woman's expression became a concerned one. "The strangest thing about it, dears, was that there were claw marks in and around the windowsill. All inside, yet the man didn't come here with an animal."

"Oh?" Armstrong asked as the woman said there was technically two rooms available, but she didn't want to rent one out to them because a previous tenant had caused damage to it. The damage she said was extensive, and Armstrong was surprised that the man hadn't hung around to pay for the damages. That was the righteous and honorable thing to do. How could one be so ashamed that he would leave someone else with that?

"I do not approve of him not paying for that," Armstrong said, a less than noticeable frown on his face, obscured by his mustache. "I hope you're not too put out by the costs."

"Oh no, sweetheart, we're fine," the woman said as she started making notes down in her book. "I'll put you down for the night in the other room, if that's fine."

"That's perfectly fine," Armstrong replied, already pulling out his wallet. He always felt it was his duty to pay for their nightly stays. As he did so, placing the money down before her, she passed the key to their room to Miranda to take.

Miranda took the key, thanked the woman and started to head up the stairs. She saw nobody in the hallway; since the woman had said that she gave them the only room left, there had to be other people behind all these closed doors. Glancing at the number on the key, Miranda found their room... and then double-checked, because it was right across from the room that was damaged.

There was tape across the doorway, deterring people from entering. Miranda stared at the splintered remains of the door, then looked into the destroyed interior, the torn wallpaper and the shredded mattress. Most the window and the wall around it was gone, leaving the sill surrounded by claw marks.

Pikachu muttered a comment. Did that old lady rent out the room to man or a tiger?

"W-Well..." Miranda said nervously to her friends as she turned and unlocked the door to their room. "Even if he didn't pay for the damages... I hope he doesn't come back tonight..." She stepped in and placed her bag on one of the beds. Seeing that other room reminded her of Dylas, but she was pretty certain that it hadn't been him staying there. Their newest friend was fine when they had left him and besides, he was a unicorn - he didn't have the claws to make marks like that.

Armstrong gave the elderly woman a polite bow before he followed Miranda up the staircase.

Upstairs was peaceful and quiet with not a soul in sight. It was fairly late and most people would probably be getting ready for bed if not already asleep. It was where Armstrong likely would have been if they hadn't been out traveling so late. He was a soldier, and soldiers knew that staying out late wasn't always an option. Their days often ran of schedules.

But, Armstrong was away from his typical military life here, so he didn't have to operate so strictly on that schedule.

He paused, looking into the damaged room. Even more so, he thought it should have been prudent for them to pay for the damages they had caused. The room had clearly been wrecked nearly beyond recognition. How could one do so much damage and simply leave it that way? Armstrong blew his breath out through his nose before following Miranda into their own room.

"This is nice," he said. It was a small room, but it had two beds, which was all the group of them really needed. Even if they had no qualms about having to share a bed to sleep in for the night, Armstrong was very large and took up the entire bed on his own. There would be no space left for Miranda in such a situation. He would rather sleep on the floor if needed.

Armstrong pulled his jacket off and draped it on the lone chair in the room. His muscles hadn't been able to breathe lately so it was nice to give them some air, even if it was a little stale. He went to the window and opened it a crack.

"I don't think whoever that was would come back tonight," he commented, looking out into the night air. "Not many would flee causing that damage only to return to the scene." Not unless he was a fool as well as a vandal.

This really was a lovely little room. It was neat and tidy, and there were beds for both her and Armstrong. Pikachu didn't need one; she usually curled up by one of their pillows and slept that way. Miranda closed the door before she sat down on the bed where her bag currently rested. She took off her Black Order jacket and carefully draped it over the end of her bed.

"You're probably right..." she replied as she removed her boots, running a hand over her socked feet. They were a little sore from all the walking they had done today. While exorcists traveled from place to place often, it was often by boat or by carriage. And she wasn't exactly the most athletic exorcist, either. Miranda had probably done more traveling in this world in the time she had been here than when she was back home.

"I shouldn't worry about it too much... I won't be able to sleep, then." Miranda looked at Armstrong. "Besides, with you and Pikachu here, I feel almost as safe as I can possibly be." Almost, because Arystar wasn't with them right now. She had to wonder where he currently was, and if wherever he had traveled to was treating him kindly. Miranda knew that some people looked at her friend in a negative light, even if he hadn't done anything to them.

Armstrong stared out over the town. It was quite lovely and peaceful out there. He knew the District had been plagued by giants in its home world. From here, he could see the wall just fine and was capable of imagining what it was like to have one such giant bearing down on them. The thought was an unsettling one. He was glad the Goddess didn't choose to bring them here as well except under special circumstances.

"We will sleep just fine," Armstrong said, turning away from the window. He pulled it closed before he left it, having no intention to leave it open as that only invited people to attempt a break-in. He believed no one would bother them, but he might as well not give anyone any openings. "No one will bother us this evening. Trost District isn't a high crime location." Unlike some place like Dunwall, which did have its fair share.

Armstrong flicked the small lamp by his bedside on. It didn't exactly flood the room with light, but it gave a small glow to the room that made it a lot more cozy than it had been moments before. He sat on the side of his bed, feeling it sag a bit under his weight. That was a normal thing for a bed to do when it was carrying his weight. Very few people were capable of making a bed that could bear his weight without it. The bed he had back home in his family estates was one such bed.

But, it was enough.

He reached down and removed his boots then, wiggling his toes once his soaked feet were free. He didn't lie down just yet, though. He wasn't sure if he would go to sleep just yet.
