It was now Rhyme’s turn for the New Year’s event. She had gotten a mysterious text taking her to Death Weapon Meister Academy, and once she had gotten there, the staff and students had all filed out in preparation, only allowing those involved to step inside.

Rhyme wasn’t entirely sure she wanted to go in, but she had to take care of this. If she didn’t, then the Academy would be destroyed. She couldn’t allow that to happen, so she had come regardless of her fear. Ring Tone stood next to her as she waited ominously in front of the big gates, wondering what to do and where to start.

It would probably help if she had assistance, though.

With a swallow, Rhyme turned to the crowd that had started to accumulate around the gates. A lot of the people in Santa Destroy had likely started to realize that this was the next location up for grabs. She glanced at the crowd, before asking with a shaky voice, “… I don’t want to go in alone, would anyone like to help me? ‘Two heads are better than one’, after all...”

Ness was clueless as to what exactly was going on in this place. The boy had crossed the ocean on a ferry to see what the other continent had to offer, to see if there was any place he might like to make his home aside from Saturn Valley. As much as he liked the Mr. Saturns, their valley wasn't too much like Onett. He'd prefer to live somewhere that at least felt similar, if he couldn't be back there, but his search had been put to the side upon realizing that a crowd was forming near a large building

A girl around his age stood apart from the crowd, just in front of it, and looking back. She appeared nervous, shaken as though in danger, and Ness frowned slightly. Could this be one of those trials that Roy hinted about? He hadn't thought that the other male had meant it so literally. While travelling he had overheard bits and pieces of this celebration that was going on, and it just sounded cruel to him. Make people create new lives in a strange place only to threaten those lives... It didn't make sense.

What Ness did know was that he was good at healing and could potentially be of some assistance to the other girl, so when she called out to the crowd to see if anyone wanted to go with her, he silently walked forward and raised his hand in answer, readying his trusty bat. Whatever he was walking into, he was ready if it meant he was helping someone who needed it.

A boy stepped up when she had asked for assistance. One that caused her to doubletake and blink in amazement. When had Ninten changed his shirt and hat? In truth, this shirt seemed more like one that Lucas would have worn, what with the yellow striping alongside the blue that was on Ninten’s original shirt. The hat, instead of the red brim, had a blue one, too.

“… Ninten?” Rhyme asked, almost unsure. “You didn’t say you were… I suppose it doesn’t matter. It’s good that you’re here.” She turned back to the school, Ring Tone with a stern expression. “… I’ve never been here before. I’m not sure what to expect.”

The text had said that she would need to take a few quizzes in some of the classrooms in order to locate the chest. She was just glad that she also didn’t have to worry about the key on top of everything else, since she already had it. So, with that, she prepared to step inside.

“Ready, Ninten?” Oh, if only she knew she was calling this boy by the wrong name.

Ninten? Who was that? Ness glanced behind him, wondering if she'd been talking to someone behind him, but no, no one had the light of recognition in their eyes, and looked at him strangely for looking back. Any thought of correcting the girl died under those gazes. They were expectant, almost. Did some of them know this Ninten kid, too? Maybe, or maybe his head was making things worse. Overthinking wasn't going to help him here.

The grip Ness had on his bat tightened as he followed the girl up to the large, intimidating structure. Instead of answering verbally, which probably would have given him away, he rested his bat on his shoulder and nodded. Maybe he'd tell her after they got inside and he wasn't being pinned with all those looks. The worst part about this situation to him was that he couldn't even ask her name because she was under the impression that he was someone that he wasn't.

Taking the front out of habit, Ness pushed the door open and held it for Rhyme. Only once the door closed, he looked to the blond if only to ask, "What is it we need to do?" He needed to know what he was up against if he was going to help her effectively. He wasn't going to worry about how the Ninten kid might act, really. She would figure out that she was mistaken sooner or later.

Taking a closer look around, it appeared that there were labels on each of the classroom doors. Each a different question. Was he supposed to help her answer these? He could do that without his bat.

Now that they were in the school, Rhyme felt her heart deep inside of her chest thumping hard against her rib cage. There was a foreboding feeling of dread – Rhyme knew if she didn’t manage to figure out all of these puzzles, then they were really in for it. The school would be destroyed, and them along with it.

“If we don’t solve the right puzzle, then the chest won’t appear,” she told Ninten, moving a hand to grasp the bell hanging off her neck. “I have the key for it… I got it at the tea party. We just need to get the chest to appear.”

So, that left the question of which door to open, and which puzzle would be the one to bring the chest to light. There was no telling what kind of subject the Goddess would have picked for it, and also… if they even had the time to do that many puzzles before hitting the right one. Rhyme found herself tapping a finger to her chin in thought, before finally approaching a door.

There, on the door in big black sharpie on a piece of paper taped on, was the words, “Pokémon Typing”. It was a subject that would be unique to this world. The Goddess likely went with all kinds of subjects that wouldn’t be limited to just things Rhyme could have learned from school back in Shibuya.

Opening the door, she found multiple tiles and curtains, showing different element symbols she recognized from the charts that were on display in the Center at Mt. Moon. Looks like this was her first puzzle.

“… This might be a bit more complicated than I thought. Any ideas, Ninten?” Ninten knew Wes pretty well, after all. He’d been a part of the Network longer than she had, and Wes was one of the founding members to her understanding. Surely he’d picked up a few ideas on typing from Wes?

(Note: The puzzle requires that the challenger step on the tile to a corresponding curtain. The curtain displays one type. The challenger must step on a tile of a type that would be super effective against it. Once the corresponding tile is pressed, the curtain will open to reveal another.
Ex: A grass-type curtain would be activated by a fire-type tile.)

(So it's like the Striaton gym. Gotcha.)

Ness furrowed his eyebrows and gazed at the type symbols. He was far from aquainted with pokémon typing, but who better than a pokémon to ask about it? The Herdier who had followed him around when he met Roy decided to follow him all the way here, and he had invested in a Pokéball to hold her when she got tired of walking.

"Duchess..." he murmured as he released her from the black and gold ball. The normal type stretched and gave a soft bark of greeting to the three in her presence as Ness moved to pet her head and motion to the room. 'The room is a puzzle based on pokémon types. Do you think you can help us?' With a soft huff, Duchess shook out her thick fur and nodded. Ness made a mental note to buy ribbons for her fur at some point. No doubt she would like it groomed.

"Duchess says she'll help us." He stated for the girl's sake. He didn't know if she could hear his thoughts or not, so for the sake of simplicity, he decided to explain whenever he had converstations with fauna in the presence of others. It was actually something of a habit he had developed ever since Jeff joined his group.

“Oh! You have a Pokémon now, too?” Rhyme asked, when Ninten brought out the Herdier. Ring Town cheerfully greeted the other Pokémon, and then the group turned to consider the curtains before them.

Hopefully, this puzzle would turn out to be far easier than it seemed at first glance. Rhyme wasn’t entirely sure that she was confident enough in her abilities to fully be able to participate. But, she had an ace in the hole, so to speak. Ninten was here with her, and he was able to communicate with Pokémon. They had two between them.

The first curtain that waited before them was green, a beautiful shade of it. Three coloured tiles were placed before it as well – one red, one blue, and the last yellow. Rhyme tilted her head at the sight and turned to Ring Tone, who gestured toward the red tile.

“… Yeah, that makes sense… Fire should be able to stop Grass, right…?” Rhyme very carefully stepped on the red tile, and the green curtain moved, opening up for the next question. “Ninten, you try the next one.”

Watching the girl, he quickly picked up on her unease and glanced to Duchess who gave him an affirmative nod. He wasn't sure of himself at all, as this was the first he'd even heard of typing pokemon and the concept of battling them had already been odd to him. Between their two pokemon, however, they would get through this. The little pink fox cat thing she had with her seemed to know it's stuff, so he assumed it was a pokemon, too. That said, he wasn't terribly surprised by that fact. The pokemon with Roy had been some kind of lion cub.

As soon as the name Ninten left Rhyme's lips in reference to him, Duchess appeared to take offense and gave a bark in protest. Ness gave a slight smile at the pokemon. Duchess seemed determined to stick up for him on things like this.

The green curtain slid open of its own accord then, ripping him from his thoughts as they were confronted with yet another curtain and set of tiles. this curtain was a lavender colored one with an eye in the dead center. It unnerved him just slightly, if only for the fact that it had appeared so suddenly. The tiles before it were a rust color red, a very pale, almost white shade of blue and an olive green. Ness had absolutely no idea what these symbols could mean, Aside from the olive one. That one was clearly a bug.

'The curtain is eluding to Psychic-types, and the tiles are for Fighting-, Ice-, and Bug-types.' Duchess explained, walking over and sitting beside the Bug-type tile, 'Of the choices, Psychic-types are weak to Bug-types.'

Ness acknowledged the information with a quiet nod, and went to go stand on the tile his pokemon had indicated. the curtain slid open and he looked to the girl with a shy smile, Ness figured if Duchess was going to have a fit every time, he should just tell her.

"I... um... My name isn't Ninten..."
