Off to the Wards, then. Dorumon slipped off the bench, taking Mei's offered hand. It was getting even more crowded here, so if they wanted to get to the Wards without too much hassle, then they had to go right now. Not many people who were busy going from one place to another would take much notice of a girl and her Digimon friend unless they bumped into each other.

Dorumon looked around, sniffed the air, then started leading them away from the bench. He had no scent that he could associate with the Wards that he could follow yet, but he had memorized the small map that he had seen on the datapad. So he knew where they were supposed to go, at least in theory. These crowds of people proved to be real obstacles. "Let's be careful, Mei..." he said as they weaved through yet another group of people. "I don't want to step on anyone's toes."

Literally and figuratively. Both would result in them getting yelled at.

Their small statures could only get them so far, for they soon arrived that what seemed like an impassible wall of people. Dorumon stopped and looked from one end of the crowd to the other, but sighed when he couldn't find any space for them to get through.

Mei kept her grip on Dorumon tight, just in case the crowd made her try and let go. She wouldn't. She wasn't prepared to lose him in this crowd. She was probably way lighter than he was - she was a waifish teenage girl, after all - and if she was knocked loose of him, she would get jostled around the crowd in a way that she wouldn't be able to find him again. If the crowd was particularly bad, she might get knocked down. And, Mei knew she wasn't much of a shouter, so she wouldn't be able to draw his attention to her.

But, at least Mei was able to easily step around people because of her small size. Even if Dorumon wasn't particularly tall, he still had his tail and he leaned forward as a natural part of his stature. He just, overall, seemed to take up a lot of room. It made it harder for them to dodge around people that Mei would have easily slipped through on her own. They were still moving quickly than Mei would have if she was an adult, however. Dorumon was probably more careful than an adult, who would have pushed and shoved their way through.

Not that it mattered too much. They came to a wall of people that didn't look like it was moving.

"Is something going on?" she asked, trying to rise onto her tiptoes to see. It didn't work; she was too short. "Or is there just so many people that moving is this slow?"

Dorumon stood a little higher up on his toes, but like Mei, he was too short to make much use of the added height, especially with all these people around them. His ears twitched as he listened. There was no yelling or screaming or anyone otherwise raising their voices for whatever reason. He didn't hear any shots being fired or any other signs of a fight. There was nothing to hint that there was something going on up there.

"I think there's just too many people..." he replied as he dropped back to his natural stance. "I don't hear anything going on up there. It's just that there isn't a lot of space..." Dorumon had never seen so many living beings - Digimon or otherwise - crammed into such a small space before. It was a little surprising to him.

"Maybe there's another path we can take," he added, looking up at Mei. "Or maybe we just have to wait until the crowd disperses." He didn't mind having to wait - he'd rather do that than risk getting shoved and losing track of Mei. As usual, he worried about her safety. Unlike a lot of their friends, Mei didn't have a way to defend herself from danger. And like any other city, the Citadel was bound to have some dangerous people living in it.

Hm, so there wasn't any sort of commotion going on up there? That was almost a shame. It gave an excuse as to why there was so many crowding the area. To be fair, Mei had followed the pathway that had been mentioned in the tablet she had, and that was likely to be the most popular route. There was a whole lot of people who were trying to make their way out of the docking area to go into the rest of the Citadel. She was sure only certain people could have clearance to get through quicker.

And, they were there on a Saturday, if Mei had checked the calendars correctly. Back home, that was a busy day for people because a lot of people didn't have work. Maybe it was the same deal here. She wouldn't have noticed since she came here. All the adults she knew were unconventional and didn't seem to have regular jobs. It was odd, but she had gotten used to it. After all, her mother was a doll maker and that was something that people often found weird, especially with the traditional dolls that littered their home, which was more or less a doll museum.

"We should just wait then," Mei said. "Once the area pans out a bit, people will get moving. We just need to make sure we follow the crowd closely enough."

She'd rather wait than wander off and get lost. She was patient. It would be fine.

"Okay." Dorumon was fine with waiting. A lot of Digimon were impulsive, but he definitely wasn't. If there was a way to avoid trouble, then he would take it, as long as it wasn't bothering anyone else. He didn't want to be a bother to anyone if he could help it. Whenever he was with Mei, he even tried to be a little more careful, for her sake as well as his own.

"Let's wait over there." Lightly tugging on Mei's hand, Dorumon went over to a clear space that was near the crowd, but not too close. Mei said they should follow the crowd closely when it finally moved, and this looked like the best spot they could stand in without getting jostled. While they waited, he looked around, watching people as they walked.

"I must be the only Digimon here." The dragon had seen a few animals, even a couple of Pokemon, but he hadn't caught sight of any other Digimon. In fact, the number of Digimon that Dorumon had met down on the planet so far was surprisingly small. The most anyone had seen of them was when they stormed Neo Domino City during Calamity months ago, but those ones had all vanished somewhere.

Where had they all gone?

Mei tried to rise on her tiptoes once more, just to see if - maybe - the crowd had started moving again. But, it hadn't so she lowered herself back down again.

Mei looked at Dorumon as he gave her a tug. She followed after him as he led her to another space so they weren't going to be jostled. There was enough space for her to stretch her arms out, which was a lot nicer than having to stand with people breathing down her neck. Because of her height, she always felt really crowded in situations like that. It was like being penned in, and she hated that feeling.

"Holland said he saw other Digimon before," Mei commented, looking at Dorumon. "Lloyd and Black said so too." But, she hadn't done so. She hadn't bothered to travel out too far yet, though. She mostly went places that were close to the Axolotl because she didn't like wandering so far from home. Back in her world, she would roam the city but it was a small city and her house was always just a quick bus ride away.

But, they had come to the Citadel and that meant they were a world away from the place they called home now.

"Maybe we can see some on here," Mei said. "Are some really big? Maybe that's why we don't see a lot here. They wouldn't fight." Human sized buildings didn't accommodate large sized creatures.

"Some get really big," Dorumon nodded. "Too big for this place. But a lot are my size, or your size, or just a little bit bigger." It really depended on the Digimon. None that were too big would bother coming to the Citadel if they couldn't move around easily. For most Digimon, being able to move was an important part of their survival, and being in a place that restricted them so much would be uncomfortable for them. Especially if they knew just how many people here carried weaponry with them.

"I can grow bigger, too," he then added. "Just not right now." Dorumon currently didn't meet the requirements, nor did he see a reason to evolve. Which suited him just fine - nobody worried about him when he was this size. And he was able to go to pretty much all the places that any person could go to. The only downside was that he couldn't fly right now, but that was okay, too. Flight was something he didn't need at the moment.

Maybe one day, though, he would evolve and take Mei for a ride up in the sky. She might like that.

Aah, so Digimon could be of all sorts of shapes and sizes. Just like animals, really. Except maybe even bigger. Could they get as big as a blue whale? On her home world, that was the biggest living creature, though she heard some of the aquatic dinosaurs got even bigger than blue whales. Mei wasn't the most versed in dinosaurs as that had never been a focus of the Japanese education system. They would rather bore teenagers to death with mathematics.

"You can get bigger?" Mei asked. Her one visible eye grew in surprise. She hadn't been expecting that. She had been told that Digimon did a thing where they evolved into other Digimon. Pokemon did that too, though from what she understood Digimon could get bigger and get smaller, while once Pokemon evolved they were stuck in that form unless they evolved again. She just never thought it was something that Dorumon was capable of doing.

"What do you look like when you get bigger?" she asked, curiously. "Do you still look like you?" She paused before adding, "I mean... if you got bigger, would I still be able to tell you're Dorumon?" Sometimes, when things changed, they weren't recognizable.

Mei had had a lot of change in her life; she wasn't always its biggest fan.

If he evolved, would he still look like him? Dorumon hadn't thought about that very much before. Mostly, he thought about how he looked different compared to normal Digimon... and how he once looked like the swarms of Digimon that attacked him and his friends. They were created from his data, though, so that made sense.

But if he evolved, would Mei be able to tell it was him?

"My name will change, but it'll still be me," he replied. "I'll still be a dragon with fur... for the most part, anyway. My strongest form, Alphamon, is a lot different." A Royal Knight, actually. But Dorumon supposed that he still had a few draconic features even as Alphamon. They were just less obvious.

"But, you know, Mei... I think you'd know it was me, no matter what appearance I take." She wouldn't have to scrutinize his appearance too much. They were friends. Her instincts would tell her that it was him. Right?

Alphamon sounded like a pretty cool name. It reminded Mei of some of the fantasy books she had read growing up. But, besides that, Dorumon would simply still be a dragon with fur, even if his name had changed. And, Mei was pretty sure he was right. She wouldn't have not be able to recognize him. They were friends now. She wouldn't just forget her friends.

There were a lot of things in the world that could make her forget things, but she didn't think something as simple as a change of form would help her forget Dorumon. He was like her best friend in this world. It was nice having a best friend. She had had one before, but Misaki was no longer alive. She had passed away. For some reason, some of the memories Mei had of her sis-, no her cousin's death were fuzzy. She didn't know why.

She didn't want to think about that part right now.

"I agree," she said with a nod. "Big dragon or little dragon, I'd know my Dorumon." She smiled at him then. A genuine smile. She wasn't always good at giving those.

The crowd started to move, causing Mei to look. "Oh, lets get behind them, quick," she said, making sure she could move into a space with the crowd so they would be able to follow all the people in.

Dorumon couldn't help but smile at Mei's response. It wasn't often that he saw her smile like that, but they were the best of her smiles, reserved for when she really meant something. And she meant this. Even if Dorumon evolved, she would know it was him, whether he was a larger dragon or a Royal Knight. There were some things that a change of form and a different name couldn't hide.

Then the crowd started to move, giving them their chance to get through. "Oh, right." Dorumon walked with his friend, making sure that nobody would come between them. There were still a lot of people ahead of them, and the space behind them was quickly filled with even more people. He couldn't see much besides them. Maybe if he had been configured with a taller height...

...no, he didn't need that. He had Mei holding onto his paw. That was all he really needed to get through this place. While his sharp ears and nose kept him alert to their surroundings, Dorumon kept his eyes ahead, waiting for the moment when the crowd dispersed into a larger space, giving them a way out of it. Sure enough, there it was. "We can move ahead now without bumping into anyone. Let's go!"
