After speaking to her quartermaster, Faris ventured further into the port town.

Her ship was docked here for the afternoon as cargo was either brought out to be delivered or brought aboard for transport. To supplement the booty they took from the ships they captured, Faris and her crew were dabbling into more legit services, such as transporting both cargo and passengers. Here in this world, it was good to have some kind of business to fall back on when needed. And developing a list of contacts would be beneficial to them as well.

Having one of the few ships that could sail across the ocean without wind was good for her reputation, even if most people she came across thought she was a man.

To be honest, she didn't care.

The captain headed into the marketplace, eyes scanning each of the stalls for wares that might be useful. Standing in the midst of bird laguz, beast laguz and humans who weren't dressed quite as fancily, the purple-haired pirate felt like she stood out somewhat. This port town was different than the ones she had grown used to.

But in a few ways, it was the same. The docks, the ships, the workers. The energy of the town, especially here in the market.

Faris stopped at a stall to look over some compasses. The one she currently owned had a large crack in the glass. A shark jumped aboard one day and tried to eat both it and her hand. A tooth hit the compass. Faris promptly booted the damn fish off her ship.

And now she was seeing if she could get a replacement.

Rhyme was slowly making her way across the world.

It seemed like a good idea at the time – the keys would be endangering every part of the world for the new year celebration. If she could have a visual for every piece of their world, perhaps it would help her in motivation for saving her piece. Phoenicis was her latest exploit, as she stepped across the town with Ring Tone at her heels.

The place was more interesting that she had, at least, anticipated. The abundance of activity was a little like Shibuya during the high peak season of a sale. In every town, she found the hustle and bustle of the people the most familiar thing about it, even if it the town or city was a far cry from her own Shibuya.

A marketplace had come into view in moments, and she started going through the stands, to speak with the people. There was so much going on and so much to see that she tried to see all of it.

Visuals and ambiance was important to her right now. The emotions, too. Noise was attracted to such things, and when she was a Noise, she could feel everything around her. She recalled the emotions better than what she learned, who she met, or what she saw. It was just the way it worked, even if she was aware of everything going on.

She stepped up next to a person with purple hair going through compasses. Ring Tone tried to prop herself up to see what was on the stand, and Rhyme held one out for her to see.

“They’re compasses, see? They help you find North,” she pointed out to her Sylveon before she replaced it on the table. It had been a nice one, she thought, but she had no reason for a compass. She had her phone, at least, and a list of people that would come running to help her if she got lost.

It seemed the person they were standing with needed one, though.

Faris had gone through the compasses carefully, even testing each one's accuracy with her current one with the cracked glass. She had made up her mind on one when a girl with a Pokemon appeared beside her, explaining to her fluffy companion what a compass was. The pirate paused to listen to her brief explanation.

"Aye, that's true, lass," she remarked, "although anyone who knows the night sky can find North using the stars as well. Doesn't help during a stormy night out at sea, though." She handed the compass to the seller, along with enough gil to pay for it. "This one, please."

"Sure thing." The man checked the price on the compass and counted the money. Unlike many of the people living on this island, he wasn't winged, yet he had pointed ears. Faris had seen enough elves and Hylians during her voyages that she was sure he didn't belong to either of those two races. With everything in order, he handed the compass back to her, along with a written receipt. "Safe travels, Captain."

“I can’t say I can do that! That’s pretty neat that you’re able to find it that way,” Rhyme complimented once the woman had said her piece. It was a really cool ability to have in her opinion. She couldn’t say she knew the night sky enough to be able to tell left from right, but this woman was able to tell all that and a bag of chips.

Rhyme watched as the woman paid for one of the compasses, giving a smile to the salesperson once he had handed her a written receipt. He then called the woman something curious.

“Captain?” Rhyme looked up at the woman in awe. “You’re a real ship captain?” Even Ring Tone was immediately impressed, and together the two looked up at the woman in awe and inspiration, both clearly excited and with stars in their eyes. “That’s so cool! What kind of stuff do you do, then?”

"Interested in the ocean life, eh?" Faris allowed herself a chuckle. Children and their curiosity. "My crew and I sail the high seas, making several stops during our rounds. We transport cargo and landlubbers like yourselves from one place to another, as long as the coin is good."

"Captain Faris has one of the few beorc sailing ships able to travel without wind," commented the compass seller, slightly amused. Likely because the fact that Faris was a real pirate hadn't been brought up. He'd better keep it that way. Everything she had bothered to mention was true enough. "His ship can travel faster than a lot of 'em, too."

"And as captain, I make sure everything's in order." Faris crossed her arms. "Whip the lads into shape if I have to." Not literally, but she didn't take kindly to her men loafing off on the job. She made sure they were all fulfilling the roles assigned to them as members of her crew.

“Where I come from, there are all kinds of storybooks with pirates and sailors of all kinds. Shows, too.” Rhyme was already all ready to explain any further. She’d told Ring Tone all the stories she recalled, telling her about Peter Pan, and Captain Hook. Of Captain Nemo. She’d read all kinds of books on the subject.

It was exciting to meet a real captain. Even more to learn that apparently, the ship that – apparently, he – sailed was able to travel without wind. All kinds of worlds existed out there, and all kinds of use of ships, magic, and even weapons. Tron in Radiant Garden had told her of a ship from his world known as a Solar Sailor, able to fly on beams of light. What kind of power did Captain Faris’ ship run on, then?

“It’s so cool your ship doesn’t need wind. What do you use, then?” Rhyme was all ears, ready to hear and learn. “It must be so tough being captain!”

Storybooks of pirates, huh? Well, she was better than any pirate from a tale. She was real, just as real as those pirates raiding ships around Sabaody Archipelago. And like a lot of them, she happened to have a few things that set her and her crew apart from the rest of the rabble out on the ocean.

"Don't you spoil it, laguz," Faris remarked, glancing at the compass seller. While she didn't know what tribe he was from, his usage of the term the laguz here used for humans pretty much confirmed that he was one of them. He smiled at her.

"Wouldn't dream of it."

Faris turned her gaze back down at the girl. "It's something you'd rather see for yourself than hear about, lass. In about three hours, my ship leaves for Dunwall. If you're interested in going there, you and your Pokemon are welcome to set sail with us, and you'll see what powers my ship for yourselves."

And since Faris was in one of her better moods today, she won't charge for the trip. There won't be any raiding of other ships along the way, either - they had a destination to get to. Those crews were lucky, at least for the next day or two.

The vendor they were with almost spilled the beans – or at least, Rhyme thought that he would, until the pirate captain had stepped in and demanded that he not spoil the surprise. That was when the captain turned to Rhyme and Ring Tone, and offered to give them a ride to Dunwall, to see his ship for themselves.

“Really?” Just the thought had caused Rhyme to get excited, to the point of nearly bouncing on her toes. Ring Tone was also clearly interested – her face had perked instantly, her ears jerking at just the words.

It was so exciting – they’d get to ride a real ship, one that rode across the water, as if they were pirates or sailors themselves. Rhyme’s heart pounded at just the thought. Imagine if, one day, she could tell Beat, Neku or Shiki about this little adventure, sailing across the water with a real captain, and his crew.

And with an unknown power source, too.

“That would be so exciting!” Rhyme voiced. “Thank you so much for inviting us! We’d love to!”

Hah! Look at how much those young faces brightened at the thought of riding a ship out on the ocean waves. There were actually kids out there who wouldn't think it would be interesting at all - they were spoiled by those fancy motorized boats she had seen before, as well as things like cars. But none of those fancy high-tech vehicles could match a ship riding the waves, surrounded by nothing but water and the sky.

"Finish whatever business you have on this island," Faris said to the girl and her Pokemon, "and come to the docks in around two and a half hours. I'll be waiting for you there." With other passengers - the ones that had to pay for the trip - she would have one of her crew stand out and wait for them. But these two were her own personal guests, and she was responsible in making sure they found her ship on time and that they were all set to go.

"And not a word about those other details," she said, pointing a finger at the compass seller as she started to leave.

"Lips are sealed, Captain," the laguz replied before the pirate disappeared into the crowd. He looked back at the other two. "Well, kids, you'd better get going and do whatever you need to do here. It's not often that Faris takes a shine to anyone. You wouldn't want to make him wait."

“In two and a half hours…” Rhyme repeated the words firmly, committing them to memory. “Got it! We’ll be there!” She turned to Ring Tone, a smile on her face. “We better go make sure that we have nothing else to do around here.”

The idea of a real ride on a ship like Faris’ fresh in their minds, Rhyme and Ring Tone turned to the laguz merchant as he spoke. “Don’t worry! We won’t make him wait!” It’d be rude after the friendly offer to give them the ride. Rhyme imagined that it wouldn’t be easy trying to run a ship while having a twelve-year-old and a Sylveon on board.

With a little salute, she tried to look as professional as possible before saying, “I’ll meet you at the docks in two and a half hours! We’ll make sure to not make you wait!” And with that, the two were off down the market street to finish some shopping of their own.

"Everything's ready?" Faris asked her quartermaster. It was getting close to the time they set sail, and she was just going over a few things. The man nodded.

"Aye, Cap'n. Cargo's secured. Got all our own supplies replenished. Our payin' guests are all on board, ready to go."

"Which leaves just a couple of certain landlubbers. Dismissed." The man nodded and went back on board. Faris remained at the foot of the ramp, scanning the crowds at the docks for the girl and her Pokemon. Compared to the humans, laguz and a few members of other races, she thought that the pair would stand out. Most of the people here were clearly adults, save for a few young bird laguz here and there. The local children.

Probably never been on a ship before. They don't need to be with those wings of theirs.

Faris looked up at the sky, watching the clouds, reading the weather from their appearances. The wind out away from the island seemed steady, but that might not be the case the closer they got to Dunwall. Which was fine - they wouldn't need it.

“Come on, Ring Tone!” Rhyme cheered her Sylveon on as they raced about in the streets. They had finished up looking around the place and had even bought a few trinkets. Merely souvenirs, but they would always remind her of this trip to Phoenicis.

Finally, the two of them had made it to the docks, and just in time, too! With a wide smile, Rhyme kept a look out for their new friend – Captain Faris, himself! It was an exciting opportunity they were about to have. Rhyme had never ridden a ship before coming to this world, and now she had ridden the ferry between the two continents quite a few times…

… But Captain Faris’ was like one from the storybooks, and she could tell when she saw all the ships that were currently docked in. And, somehow, his didn’t need the winds in order to move.

Ring Tone cried out, and Rhyme looked up to see Captain Faris waiting by a ramp. “You’re right, Ring Tone! There he is!” And just like that, they began to move through the crowd to make their way to Captain Faris. She hoped they weren’t too late!

“Here we are!” she announced as they made it. “I hope you weren’t waiting too long?”

And there they were.

"Not at all," Faris replied. They were ready to set sail, but she hadn't had to wait for these two for very long. She wasn't known to being patient, but her guests had given her nothing to complain about. "We'll be setting sail as soon as you're on board, so let's be off." As she turned and started up the ramp, her crew scrambled to get their final preparations ready. She didn't have to say anything to them - they all knew what they had to do.

Once she reached the deck, she turned and looked the girl and her Pokemon over. "Your names?" So she had something to refer to them by. The compass seller had already mentioned the captain's name to them, but she had yet to hear their own. Now would be the time to get that out of the way, before they sailed out on the ocean's waves.

Rhyme smiled, glad they hadn’t kept Faris waiting too long. He led the way up the ramp and right onto his ship, which was bigger than she had initially been imagining. It was like she was part of Peter Pan or even an anime that she had used to watch on television.

Faris then asked for their names, and Rhyme smiled up at him. “My name’s Rhyme, and my Sylveon is called Ring Tone. It’s a pleasure to meet you!” She gave a little bow in her introduction, Ring Tone bowing her head as well. With their introductions given, Rhyme looked around some more excitedly, glancing about.

“So this is your ship! It’s so cool, Captain Faris!” Ring Tone gave a chime of agreement. This ship was a classic – and Rhyme was excited to see how it moved and got around without using the wind.

Rhyme? The only one on the planet, as far as Faris was aware, who went by Rhyme was one of the Calamity Victors. Which meant that this girl was worth a pretty penny. But, even as a pirate, Faris felt like kidnapping a young girl and holding her for ransom was distasteful. Years ago, she would've considered it. Nowadays, she certainly wouldn't. Her sister and their friends had rubbed off on her in ways that she was still discovering.

Rhyme and Ring Tone were under her protection, for as long as they remained on this ship. Anyone who came by and interrupted their trip was going to be in for a painful lesson in manners.

"Don't let me keep you from exploring her, then," Faris replied, seeing how excited the two were. "Come to me with questions if you have 'em." She wasn't worried that they would stick their noses into anything that they shouldn't be sticking their noses into. Anything that guests weren't supposed to see was already locked up. So besides that, they could go wherever they wanted.

She left them to do whatever they wished, barking a few orders to her men as she stepped up to the helm. Within a few minutes, the anchor was up, the sails were down and they pulled out of the harbor. There had been a slight lurch when they first started - as if the ship had been tugged out of her spot in the docks - but for now, the wind was enough to get them away from the island. Whether it stayed that way remained to be seen.
