They stood at the edge of the very same field that was ignored and shunned by nearly everyone else. At her ear, Lucina heard Vivillon murmur something in worry, and she reached back to pat her Pokemon's head. Beside them, Suicune stood silently, peering out at the expanse of grass that stretched out before them, Makna Forest looming to the north.

Not many ventured into Calamity Field on purpose.

Even some of Lucina's friends in the Network avoided it. Wes always stayed clear of it; she understood his reasons for doing so. Riki said that the air smelled so funny, he didn't mind taking a longer route around it whenever he traveled between Makna Forest and the rest of the continent. Lucas said something felt really off about it, even if he was standing some distance away. And while Amaterasu would run through it as a shortcut, even she didn't linger for very long.

Lucina had originally been planning to search Dunwall as part as her ongoing research on the trade dealings between both continents and the ocean, but when this assignment came up, she opted to take part in it. Some interesting rumors had recently popped up and the Network needed someone to confirm them. So she volunteered. And so did Suicune, who apparently had been to this field before and didn't quite trust it to be as tame as it looked.

All they were doing now was waiting to see if anyone else would join them.

"There's no breeze," the swordswoman commented to break up both the time and the silence. Indeed, if she had arrived here blindfolded and didn't know any better, she would assume that she had gone indoors. No wind at all. Just grass and part of the river. Nothing else.

They were just standing at the edge, and Lucina already felt uneasy. Were any of those rumors true?

Avoiding an area someone would avoid for varying reasons wasn't something someone like Jack Atlas did. Given, he didn't have the same sort of sense that someone like Wes or Lucas did, but he didn't see much reason in avoiding it all together. If he needed to go there, then he was going to go there. Simple as that. And, right now, he needed to go there.

Most of the Network wanted to avoid the place, so he wasn't going to push it, but Jack rode his D-Wheel to the edge of Calamity Field. Unlike some of the others, he only got a small sense of something wrong here, but that was probably due to the fact he knew about what happened here. What exactly that was? It was a lot, and it was something that affected the world as a whole. It wasn't something anyone could have easily ignored if they were here at the time. You didn't even need to be in the immediate area. He wasn't; he still knew.

As he rode, he was able to see someone who looked familiar. From the distance, Suicune was much more recognizable but closer up he was able to easily make out Lucina. Each of the members of the Network were easy to identify to him. Jack took his relationships and friendships with people very seriously. These people were his friends, and he would be able to recognize each of them in a heartbeat.

He rolled to a stop next to her.

"Lucina," he said as he climbed off his D-Wheel. He gave two the Pokemon present a nod too. "Vivillon. Suicune."

A strange, yet familiar sound reached Lucina's ears, and it wasn't long before Jack rode up to them on his D-Wheel. "Hello, Jack," she greeted him with a nod. She didn't ask why he had gone out here. If it wasn't because he was passing through, then it was because he was here for the assignment like they were. Suicune silently nodded to Jack in acknowledgement, while Vivillon seemed visibly relieved that he was now here.

"It's eerie, isn't it?" Lucina then remarked, turning her gaze back to the field before them. "There's no air current here. It's almost like we're in a giant box." A box without tangible walls, and yet nothing within seemed to spill out of it. She could smell the nearby river, as well as the grass. But while that grass looked green and healthy, it was still. No wind rustled it, no insects chirped on its blades.

While the planet in general was so full of life, Jack had been the only living being they had seen in the time since they arrived here.

Jack climbed off of his D-Wheel before taking off his helmet and placing it on his seat. He wasn't going to need it for the time being. His D-Wheel would be perfectly safe in this spot while they were doing whatever it was they wanted to do to investigate. No one was going to come by here. Even if they did happen by, they weren't hanging around long enough to figure out how to hack his D-Wheel's security system.

"It's is," he agreed, glancing around. His eyes narrowed as he looked. It didn't look like it was a place that would cause any suspicion, but that was only if someone didn't know what occurred here. One could almost feel it in the air that something happened here a while back. He didn't think any of this was a reason to be afraid of this place, nor a good enough reason to avoid it.

"You have any idea where you want to start?" he asked, glancing down at her. She was the first one here; she had more time to mull it over. Jack, on the other hand, hadn't thought all that much about it.

Where should they start? The only things they had to base their choice on was what they already knew of this place - which wasn't very much, to be honest - what rumors they had heard, and what they could currently see. Visibly, there wasn't much that stood out. The rumors could only be checked once they were further into the field and until then, their knowledge of the field likely won't be much help.

"I think we should head to the river first," Lucina said. "This field is not the only area it goes through - we can see if there's anything different about this particular stretch of it." While she didn't know very much about rivers, they did have Suicune with them. Surely, the Legendary Pokemon could pinpoint anything strange that might be in the water.

"Then, I suppose... we shall try heading to the center of the field." That was where both the maze and the colosseum had been during Calamity. They say that the atmosphere got even stranger the closer one ventured to that spot. So Lucina thought that perhaps that ought to be their ultimate goal - head towards the center and observe what happened as they went.

River, right. They were going to head to the river. Jack had no plans of action - he wasn't always the best planner when it came down to things like this - but if Lucina thought going to the river was a good idea, then they were going to do just that. It was possibly the only actual landmark this place had. It was a good a place to start as any.

"Let's go then," he said. They were wasting daylight just standing there. They probably looked really good simply standing there - Jack believed they were both good looking people - but when there was a job to be done, they needed to do it. And, they were likely to look good doing that as well so there was no loss. He took off down the field, moving at a quick stride.

Jack didn't quite know where the river was, but it wasn't on the edge of the field they were standing on so he knew they simply needed to go straight ahead and they would get there. Sure enough, they reached it after a time. He heard it before he saw it, but it came into view soon enough. The river wasn't running too quickly, which was good - no one was getting washed away in this.

Jack approached it before crouching down to look at it. His brow furrowed, but he couldn't tell if there was anything wrong with it or not. It was a good thing they had Suicune, then. She would have a better idea than he would.

They headed to the river. Lucina made sure to match her pace with Jack's - she wasn't about to be the reason why they lingered here longer than they should. Vivillon followed after her, keeping close and ready to dive under her cape at a moment's notice. Suicune walked beside the two humans; she looked alert, yet calm.

As soon as they arrived at the river's edge, the Water-type wandered onto it, stepping lightly on the surface as if she weighed nothing. The first time Lucina had seen her do that, she was amazed. Even now, she wondered how Suicune was able to walk on the water - many other Water-type Pokemon weren't able to do that at all.

"It seems normal enough..." Lucina said as she walked along the shore. "And very clear." Not cloudy at all. Very drinkable, although she refrained from doing so. The most unusual thing about it was the lack of anything living in or around it, besides the algae growing on the rocks and aquatic plants adding their own splashes of color. Fish would be one thing - not every body of water had them - but there weren't even any insects.

Suicune took a careful sip of the running water she was standing on. It was clean; there wasn't anything wrong with it.

Jack pulled off a glove and trailed his fingertips along the water's surface. He didn't expect anything to happen, but one could never be too sure in this world, especially when dealing with things that directly related to the Goddess. Nothing did happen, though, aside from Jack getting his fingers wet. Suicune didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with the water either. There didn't seem to be anything living in it, but if this place gave off such a vibe to humans and other human-like creatures, Jack wouldn't be surprised if even bugs avoided the place.

He stood up, slipping his glove back on.

"Nothing seems to be amiss here," he agreed, looking at Lucina. "I think its just a river passing through this place. Obviously here before any of the Calamity stuff happened. It's probably abandoned like this because of the vibes the whole place gives off."

Either way, he didn't think they were going to find much here by the river. It was just that, a river. Unless some monster jumped out at them, he didn't seen why they needed to hang around it for much longer, though they could probably follow it somewhere. They just needed to be careful to not completely leave the field all together.

"To give off such vibes that everything besides plants avoid the area... the presence of this place is very strange, indeed." And it was such a sizable area, too. Why had the Goddess decided on such a place? Nobody seemed to know what kind of world it was from; Lucina suspected that the Goddess had simply created the area from scratch. If so, had she meant for it to be so strange, or was that simply a side effect of the events that had happened here?

Or was there some other reason entirely?

"That leaves us with a trip towards the center." As Suicune stepped off the surface of the river, Lucina turned and faced their next destination. The swordswoman's eyes narrowed. "People have said that they experienced strange occurrences that became more frequent as they approached. Unexplained noises, fleeting shadows and most recently... phantoms of the Victors."

Some even claim that the entire field was haunted. Perhaps it was. Lucina had yet to see anything that would sway her opinion, however.

Jack thought this was definitely a place the Goddess made from scratch. The roads and fields that were between each major location - not to mention certain things like the train stations for the Flying Pussyfoot to stop at - were created by her and didn't belong to any one world. He tried to remember what might have been here at all before Calamity had happened, but he couldn't think of anything. It must have been an insignificant place then, nothing but filler until the Goddess chose to put something here.

"Phantoms?" Jack asked before scoffing. He thought that was ridiculous and people were showing their foolishness, but he didn't say anything else about it. It wasn't like ghosts didn't exist here; the Mansion in Oerba was proof enough of that. To him, though, the idea that there was phantom versions of people like Wes or the Doctor floating around was simply ridiculous.

Of course, he needed to prove them wrong himself, so he turned in the direction they needed to head and started walking. He wanted to see for sure if these ghosts were real, though he doubted here.

Though, as he moved, he could tell the air felt a little heavier. He shook his head. No use acting like that was too significant a thing. It could be all in his head for all he knew.

"How far do we have to go?" Jack asked Lucina. He wasn't familiar with the place and hadn't bothered doing the research. Lucina would probably know more of that than he did.

"I'm not sure," Lucina replied. "I only know that these occurances should become more frequent the closer we get to the center." She had never been here before. More than one person had reported the same thing, however, so it had to be that they were witnessing something while here in the field. It was up to her, Jack and the Pokemon to see it with their own eyes.

The air felt... strange. Heavy. Not with humidity or fog, but something that wasn't to be seen.

It was after a few minutes that Suicune nudged Lucina's arm, prompting her to look the same way that the Legendary was. Several meters away was a moving figure, wispy and white. It was small, running through the grass on four legs.

"Jack... look over there." It clearly wasn't supposed to resemble any of the Victors. But its shape, with its long ears and tail, reminded Lucina greatly of Wes' Umbreon.

There wasn't much noise as they moved, other than the sound of the grass brushing their shoes as they walked. Jack wasn't someone who stared down at the ground as he walked, unless he was following after a trail that he needed to follow. That, to him, was a sign that someone was shy or meek, or even both, and Jack was neither of those things.

But, he didn't see anything. Not immediately.

When Lucina stopped him, Jack slowed, turning to look in the direction that was pointed out to him. There was some sort of phantom there, moving through the grass. Jack's eyes narrowed and he frowned as he looked at it. It did resemble Umbreon on a bit. Jack wasn't the most versed when it came down to Pokemon - he was far more familiar with the kinds that the trainers he knew had - but Umbreon was one he was definitely familiar with. And, Umbreon would have been with Wes while he was here.

Jack's gaze went upwards, but only briefly.

"You don't suppose the Goddess knows we're here and is just messing with us," he muttered, just loud enough for Lucina to hear. Maybe this wasn't a normal occurrence. Maybe she was bored and saw they were here and decided she wanted to play with them.

"Perhaps?" Lucina replied quietly. "I would assume that she had other things to do with her time besides playing games with travelers, but..." This was the Goddess they were speaking of. It was possible that the phantoms were simply what the Goddess wanted them to see, so she could watch how they reacted. Or maybe they were remnants of memories that had taken a life of their own, and that the Goddess liked them enough to keep them here.

It was difficult to say until they found out more.

The small phantom approached them, stopping several feet away. It watched them for a moment. Then it purposely turned and trotted away, heading towards the center of the field. "It appears that it wants us to follow it." Lucina knew that there was a possibility that it was trying to lead them to a trap, but if they turned away now, they might never see it again.

They had an assignment to do, and Lucina wasn't about to shy away from their quest. Not yet.

Jack snorted, an almost disgusted sound. The Goddess was most definitely the sort of entity who would be watching them from wherever she was and attempting to cause them more annoyances. If she was even watching right now. They were never going to be certain. She only showed herself when she wanted to, and Jack couldn't even remember the last time she bothered to appear. Maybe during the Mist. That was the last time he could personally recall anything.

If it was up to him, she would stay the hell away. Unfortunately, he didn't get to make those decisions. A lot of things in this place would be different if he did.

The phantom Umbreon wanted them to follow it. Jack didn't like that. When mysterious beings came up and decided they needed to be followed, that normally meant bad things. The most likely conclusion was it was a trap of some sort. Jack expected something like that, so he might as well be prepared. If it wasn't, then there was no harm done.

Jack followed after it. He was sure the air was getting heavier as he walked. It was almost stuffy here, as if he was in an overheated room.

It wasn't long before Vivillon retreated underneath Lucina's cape. That was, it seemed, the Pokemon's safe spot. She was a shy creature who got nervous easily. Her blue wings poked out on either side of the cape, giving her Trainer the appearance of a fairy. Lucina let her remain there as they walked, following after the phantom of Umbreon.

The air was getting heavy and soon, it was no longer silent. They were quiet, but Lucina heard them. Fragments of sentences, although she could only make out a few of the words. But she recognized at least two of those voices, even with what little she could pick out from the muffled noise. There was no way she could mistake Doctor Eggman's voice for anyone else's.

The same could be said for the Victor she was much more familiar with. The phantom Umbreon led their small group to two other wispy figures. The similar-sized one with the forked tail was clearly meant to be Espeon. The taller, more humanoid figure, with spiky hair and tattered coattails, holding its right arm as if it was injured...

"That's Wes." Wary, Lucina stopped some distance away - enough to give her time to draw her blade and strike if the phantom decided to charge at them. It didn't; it simply stood there, a silent sentinel. Waiting.
