Jack listened to the sounds around them as they got closer to their destination, or wherever it was that the phantom Umbreon was leading them. He didn't quite know what he was feeling over seeing it. It wasn't quite like he was uncomfortable, but it was something akin to that. It was possibly because he was fully aware that these phantoms were meant to represent people he knew, and he didn't like the idea of things copying them.

As they got closer, Jack was able to see more of the figures in their wispy existence. He was able to pick out some of them, having met the people who they represented. It was eerie looking at them. They weren't full coloured in like they should have been. At times, Jack thought maybe he was able to see completely through them and other times they looked fully solid. He didn't even know if any of that was simply a trick of the eyes.

"Are they... reenacting something that happened here?" Jack asked. He only managed to tear his eyes away from the scene to glance at Lucina, but he also flashed a quick glance upward. Was the Goddess watching what was going on? Was she a part of this? Was this just another way for her to amuse herself in between her games?

"They might be..." Lucina said, returning Jack's glance. The more she looked around them, the more she could see that there were multiple phantoms for some of the people represented here, all moving differently. She wished she knew more about phantoms now. While she could tell Jack a bunch of details about time travel, what she could say about what they were currently seeing consisted of less facts and more of her own assumptions.

She could only believe what she saw with her own eyes and yet, was what she was seeing real?

Hand on Falchion's hilt, Lucina continued forward. The Wes phantom from earlier didn't make a move against her; it simply sat down in the grass, its two wispy Pokemon sitting protectively on either side of it. Suicune never took her eyes off of the trio as she also passed them. Lucina had to wonder what the Water-type was thinking, seeing these images of the friends she had made several years ago.

As her own eyes turned straight for the center-most point of the field, it was as if she couldn't look at it directly. As if she was trying to stare at the sun, only it wasn't light that was threatening to blind her.

Instead, Lucina focused on another phantom in the distance, for the sake of having something to stare at. It was a... car. Ylisse didn't have cars, but she had lived here long enough to know what they were. She wasn't sure what it was doing here, nor was she certain if she wanted to find out. "It hurts my eyes to look towards the center now. As if it doesn't want to be focused on at all."

Should they proceed? Lucina didn't know if this was all just something the Goddess had set up for amusement, but she was starting to feel rather uncomfortable being here. If their host wasn't simply toying with them, then they may actually be in over their heads... or they were quickly reaching that point.

Jack wasn't sure if he liked what was going on around here. It was an unsettling feeling, being in this area and he could feel the skin on the back of his neck prickle. Whatever it was that was going on was unnatural. It didn't scare him - Jack didn't really scare at all - but it was something he knew he had to worry about.

And, if the Goddess was involved in this, which he was pretty sure she was, then there was all the more for them to worry about.

Jack licked his lips before he followed after Lucina. He kept an eye on all that was going on around them, but he felt the weird sensation to his eyes from the car before he even saw it. He couldn't quite look at it, and that annoyed him greatly. Jack hated not being able to look at something that was bothering him. It was clear this thing was something important. How it was supposed to be important was yet to be discovered.

Obviously, though, it was meant to be discovered. Who knew what would happen if they didn't approach it. That could be more deadly than poking at it.

"Let's get closer," he said, though he raised his arm. The one weapon he was able to bring with him to this world were his duel monsters, who the Goddess so graciously allowed to be summoned as more than simple holographs. That was the one thing he approved of her doing. Before he took a step, he added, "But be cautious. We don't know if this thing can attack or not."

"It does seem out of place." It wasn't the car that concerned Lucina the most, however. She could look at it just fine, provided that she kept the very center of the field out of her line of sight. It was that center, off in the distance, that was causing problems for her eyes. Her quick glances towards it revealed to her that it just seemed to be an empty space, but...

Shaking her head, Lucina focused on the car. It was parked further up, so even if they didn't look at the center of the field, they would still head towards it as they approached the phantom vehicle. As they walked to it, the voices in the air gradually quieted, replaced by this heavy pressure on her senses. Lucina couldn't describe it, but she instantly preferred the voices over whatever was going on now.

Halfway there, Vivillon started shivering against her back, prompting her to return her Pokemon to her Pokeball. It was just the three of them now - her, Jack and Suicune. The Legendary stepped in front of the two so she could lead the way, in case something jumped out at them.

Upon reaching the car, Lucina didn't find anything strange about it, aside from it being a phantom. She changed her mind as she started walking around the vehicle, pausing when she noticed another phantom laying on the ground in front of it. Due to its lack of color and semi-transparency, it took her a moment to recognize who the fallen figure was supposed to represent. When it clicked, her eyes widened and she took a step back.

Jack waited as Lucina returned Vivillon to her Pokeball. Jack didn't blame her for wanting to go, either. She wasn't a combat Pokemon, trained the way Black or Wes' typical teams were. Being out in a place like this wasn't somewhere she needed to be if she didn't have to. And, they still had Suicune with them, not to mention Jack's duel monsters and Lucina's sword skills. Vivillon could take the rest.

He approached the car, trying to keep himself from looking at the center where the weird, blinding light was coming from. He was tempted to stare at it, because he wasn't the sort who liked being forced to look away, but he didn't. There was more important matters to attend to.

Jack circled the car, noting it was a phantom, much like Wes and his Pokemon companions had been. But it wasn't the only phantom there.

In front of it was a small figure. Jack knew it and he was sure that Lucina recognized it too. He'd been told what went down during Calamity, as much as the people present wanted to be describe it to him. He understood why they didn't want to share all the details. From what he was told, it wasn't the most pleasant of experiences.

He stepped away from the car, looking away. "What's the point of all this?" he asked. It was starting to annoy him. If this was the Goddess' doing, he would have some choice words for her. Though he knew he would need to watch his tongue, if he didn't want whatever ridiculous punishment she was likely to inflict on him.

That made him more annoyed.

Whatever had happened during Calamity, Lucina hadn't known this particular detail. She wasn't sure how much Rhyme had told anyone, but Wes had been rather quiet about that final challenge. If he had any details to share, it was likely he would've only told people he was really comfortable with, such as Jack and Holland, maybe even Black and White. The few details Lucina did know... this hadn't been one of them.

And these phantoms were reliving these moments, over and over again. Why?

"The center." It was just over there, beyond this car. Lucina didn't look at it, for it didn't want to be looked at. But to truly understand what was going on here, they might have no other choice but to head there and see what they could find. If the Goddess hadn't wanted anyone to go there, then it was likely she wouldn't have allowed them to go this far and see this much.

Sensing what Lucina was thinking, Suicune nodded. The royal nodded back and then turned to their friend. "Shall we brave it, Jack Atlas?" They had come this far and they might be two of the few in the Network who had the willpower to keep going beyond this point. They shouldn't give their friends and family a reason to attempt this trek if they could help it. Not Wes, not the children and not Holland and Talho, who also had their son to worry about on top of everything else.

Whatever they found there - trouble, a warning, or even nothing at all - this may be their only opportunity to learn about it.

Jack wasn't sure there was supposed to be a point to all this that was happening. He was sure the Goddess was sitting wherever it was she spent most of her time, watching what they were doing and judging what their reactions was. He doubted that these phantoms were always here. If they were, someone would have mentioned them by now, and he hadn't heard about these particular entities. He was brave, and he knew Lucina was too, but they weren't the only ones to venture this far into the field surely. Someone might have gone this way, if only to pass through.

At least, Jack believed so. Either way, he didn't fear these phantoms and doubted he was the only one who was willing to go in this way.

Jack didn't look at the bright spot of the center. Instead, he looked off of it, as if gazing somewhat past it. It hurt his eyes to look at it. It wasn't like he was trying to say he was weak, but he preferred retaining his perfect eyesight all the same.

"We might as well," he said with a small scoff in his voice. "I doubt anything will really happen until we go there." And, he preferred if they were the ones to check it out. He knew they could handle it, and he didn't want the others in their group to attempt it.

"Then let us proceed." Suicune led the way and Lucina followed her, hand resting on the hilt of her blade. Neither of them looked at the center, they just headed towards it. After two minutes, it didn't felt like they made much progress. It was as if the center kept moving away which each step they took.

And then, suddenly, they were getting closer to it. The ground underneath Lucina's feet seemed to tremble with each of her steps. Any and all sounds grew muffled before they simply disappeared. The air was heavy, bearing weight on her shoulders. The closer they got, the easier it was to look ahead, for her eyes seemed to have adjusted to whatever had been deterring them earlier.

At the center, the world around them shook. The ground had its own erratic pulse; when Lucina waved a hand in front of her, it left a trail of afterimages. "Time seems... different here," she commented; her voice sounded like it didn't come from her mouth, but the very air around them.

"And what is time?" A trail of wisps swirled around and formed another phantom. Lucina recognized it immediately, and it wasn't anyone who had been involved with Calamity's final night. Her eyes narrowed as it continued to speak. "Not every place, nor everyone, is bound by its chains. You should know this, Foreseer."

Lucina didn't draw her blade. Not yet. "Why do you appear before us now, in this time and place?" 'Marth' smiled before replying; two phantoms appeared behind it, clearly meant to be wispy copies of Lucina's companions. Just as it was a copy of her.

"The three of you seek your answers, and your path has led you to here. After encountering so many phantoms who relive even the most painful of memories in silence, you come across one who can speak. Am I the key to your answers, perhaps? Or simply another memory?"

Jack was starting to feel more aggravation as they attempted their trek towards the center of the field. At first, it didn't seem like it was going anywhere. He didn't pick up speed as he moved though, even he was starting to get impatient over it. If there was some sort of higher power who was putting on this ridiculous farce - Goddess or otherwise - he didn't want them to get the satisfaction from him showing his emotions physically, even if it was hard for him to keep them at bay verbally.

After what felt like some time, it looked like they were finally making progress. They reached the center, and Jack was surprised by what greeted them there. Phantoms of themselves waited for them. Either he nor Lucina had been at Calamity's final game, and so they didn't fit in with the rest of the phantom that milled around this field.

And yet here they were.

"Stop speaking in riddles," Jack retorted to the phantom. He'd seen people try to speak like this. It was some sort of power play, and it didn't make them look as intelligent as they wanted it to be. "State what you're doing here and what you want us to do instead of trying to make yourselves seem mysterious."

It could insult him if it wanted and if that what made its tiny phantom brain feel better; it didn't stop it from looking absolutely ridiculous. It only made it look more so. Whoever it was that was causing these problems were unimportant if this was how they tried to convey themselves. He had no time for all this baubles and sparkles they were trying to use to disguise themselves. People who did that often had no fall back and they needed to hide it. They needed to prove that they weren't.

"Straight to the point, as usual," 'Marth' replied, unfazed by Jack's attitude. "And just how many times has your directness cost you and those you hold dear, former king?"

"Jack does have a point," Lucina retorted. "We're here to get to the bottom of this. Judging from your words, you appeared here to give us answers. So, speak. Tell us about this place, phantom."

"Very well, then." 'Marth' looked out at the strange, empty landscape. "As you are well aware, this was where the Goddess has hosted two of her parties, with the latter's outcome truly deciding whether the world lived or died. Whether she had them here because this place meant something to her, or simply because it was usable space, even I don't know. But what took place here had a remarkable effect on this field. Memories have seeped into this area, changing the flow of time and altering the atmosphere. Or, perhaps that's simply what the Goddess wants everyone to believe."

"Neither Jack nor I have been here for Calamity's final game," Lucina pointed out. "So why do you stand here now?"

"You sought answers and so we appeared from your subconsciousness. Even you three, who hadn't been there when Calamity ended, aren't immune to the effects of this place." 'Marth' paused, as if considering Lucina's thoughts. She couldn't read the phantom's expression, for it was hidden behind its mask. "Some things, however, are unknown to me. Our gracious host could have very well sent me as a guide, or as a messenger with a warning. Either way, I'm here to answer your questions."

Jack grunted, but didn't respond verbally. As predictable as he assumed it would be, the phantom attempted to mock him. This sorts of things were all the same with no originality. At one point in his life, he might have gotten angry enough to retort back to it, but he knew how to hold his tongue these days.

Most of the time.

Lucina carried on the conversation with it for them, so Jack found no reason to converse with it. Instead, he glanced around the field. He didn't quite see many of the phantoms moving around, though he thought he was able to make out one. He couldn't tell what it was, though.

The thing's explanation of this place made some sort of sense, if only because Jack had experienced odder things in his life. When the phantom said it would give them answers to their questions, he barely knew where to begin.

"Do the rest of these memories..." he began, trying to gather his thoughts, "not you, but what we saw. Do they only re-enact what took place here? So you only see the people who were there?" Or, were there other things taking place here? All he'd seen were the Calamity things he had been told about, nothing more.

"Of everything that has happened here in the months that this world has existed, Calamity has the strongest influence," 'Marth' replied. "It is the final game that left the strongest impression, as well as the most enduring of scars. Since it's also the reason why this field works the way it does, it's those memories that take the clearest shape. You may, by chance, see phantoms of others who have visited this place, although their presence will be much weaker."

"And only if they stepped into this field's boundaries in the first place," Lucina reasoned. Her phantom nodded. "Do any of these memories pose a threat to others?"

"No... at least, not to you three. Our forms are only lingering memories of those we represent. We cannot physically harm you." To prove it, 'Marth' stepped forward, reaching to touch Lucina's shoulder. She felt a chill when its hand passed right on through. "You also possess both the physical and mental fortitude to reach the center, where the field's effect is at its most powerful. Others may collapse from the atmosphere, or they may be overwhelmed by the emotions that flood the air."

Jack absorbed the words that were being described to them, though he wasn't full certain if he understood it all. He knew that Calamity had caused something here, which was why the phantoms were able to form at all. And, apparently he and Lucina were strong enough to make it here while someone else wouldn't be able to.

There was still something that bothered him: why were they able to do this? Why did the Goddess decide that this was important to include in her world? Like everything else in this place, it wasn't possible for it to exist without her go ahead, but there was no explanation of why it was here to begin with. She didn't even bother giving one of her annoying dream speeches to let them know it was here, whether to be informative or to be taunting.

Jack's annoyance of these thoughts showed on his face, though he didn't question the phantom out loud. He simply watched as it demonstrated that it couldn't harm them by passing its hand through Lucina's shoulder. Watching it was... mildly unsettling.

"Is it going to stay this way?" he asked then. "Is this field just going to remain like this or will it go as time passes on?" And, Calamity becomes just a memory to the people who lived there.

"That," answered 'Marth', "is something even I'm uncertain of, I'm afraid. Calamity was enough to cause time to bend here and memories to manifest. The effects could simply fade away after a time, yet they could very well remain for months, years. Lifetimes."

"So long as the Goddess chooses to keep things this way..." mused Lucina. "If she didn't like it, she would've done something once she realized it was happening. The fact that the field remains in this state, and that we're standing here speaking with you, means she has a reason not to touch it."

"It's possible." 'Marth' shrugged its shoulders. "When the subject turns to the Goddess, who can truly say?"

"Indeed." Lucina looked around at the field. She almost felt like time had stopped at the center, but she wasn't entirely sure. There was still so much that they didn't know about this field, even with someone providing them with answers. Why had the Goddess included this field in her world, and why had she chosen to keep what was now affecting it? Was there something important here that they were overlooking?
