Cinnamon even wrote down the quote that Flemeth had given. It didn't quite make sense, but she only needed to hear it once in order to write it down. She would still have to read it over several times before she could recite it later, but she would rather do that than simply remembering every single little detail the moment she acquired it. She liked being able to actually study.

She wrote down the rest of what Flemeth said, taking note of the murmur in the room. A test dummy... for death and destruction magic? It sounded risky, even dangerous. But this academy was used to dealing with death and destruction, so someone was bound to be brave enough to volunteer. Cinnamon wasn't going to, though - unlike the organics in this room, she was technically not alive, and so she wasn't sure how that would affect Flemeth's magic.

Maybe it would still work, seeing as her own healing abilities worked on organics on this planet. But she didn't want to cause a bump in the lesson if it didn't.

"I'll do it," said an older student as he raised his hand. "I'll be your test dummy."

Ah, a volunteer. Flemeth had expected there would be someone in an academy that fancied death who would take her up on her offer. She knew this wasn't the way things were taught in the Circles, but she looked down on their way of teaching. They were often too safe with how they showed students to use their magic, and that was how their rules worked. For everyone's own safety, they would tell someone. They would forget to inform the mages that they didn't ever want them to come into their full potential, because the Chantry did not approve.

"Now," she said out loud as the student came to face her, "the fun thing with entropy is that it is not necessarily something that you used to outright kill someone. You could use it simply to cause misfortune upon your opponent so they make their own end."

That was what she was going to use on the student before her. She would never outright kill a student. That was counterproductive; how could they learn if they were dead? The staff also wouldn't take lightly to it. Not that any of them would be able to do anything to charge her, but she would stay on their good side. She found the Academy intriguing.

"Boy, attack me," she said to him with a nod. "Not at full force. Don't use your death weapon. We wouldn't want you to really hurt yourself. Swing your fists at me. I won't even move." She stood still as the boy went for her but she pointed at him, casting the spell Misdirection Hex on him. Even as she stood in front of him, not moving, her swung at her - and missed.

There was a collective "oooh" from the audience as the student kept missing Flemeth. Try as he might, he couldn't seem to touch her. All his punches missed. They went past her head, or by her shoulders; while it looked like some got pretty close, they were still all missing by at least an inch. To keep missing hitting someone when they were so close and standing completely still... that was normally impossible, wasn't it?

Using misfortune to deflect your enemies' blows... Cinnamon thought that was very interesting! She jotted this down, then glanced up from her notes to watch the scene at the front of the room again. How long did this spell last? Was there a cure? Not everything had a cure, but as a medic, she was very interested in cures whenever they could be applied.

Maybe this spell couldn't be quickly reversed and the student would have to wait until it wore off. Sometimes, time was the only cure for these sorts of things.

Flemeth let the boy swing at her a few more times before she reached out and took him by the arm, firmly but gently, and twisted him so he was in a hold he wouldn't have been able to break out of. Again, she did it gently so it wouldn't have done more than prevent him from being able to break free of her. She held him there for a moment as she waited for her spell to wear off. She didn't use it at its fullest; if she did, it would have lasted longer. As it were, she wanted to make sure that the spell would wear off fast enough that she could send him to his seat without him missing it and falling to the floor.

Once she was sure he was alright, she released him and gave him a gentle push to let him know he could return to his seat. Once he was seated, she could see all the people around him immediately converge on him, probably to ask him questions about how it felt to be under the spell. He looked like he was quite willing to soak up the attention.

With half a smile, Flemeth turned back to address her audience.

"As you can see, a spell like Misdirection Hex can be quite useful, particularly if you want to stop someone from hurting you but you don't want to hurt them in return. They can simply wear themselves out or give you the opportunity to knock them out with no harm to yourself." She cleared her throat. All this talking was making her throat dry.

As if on cue, one of the teachers came and placed some water bottles on the table behind her. Flemeth grabbed one without acknowledgement of the teacher and took a drink. Once she placed it back down, she turned back to the students.

"Entropy isn't all funny pranks on your friends to make them look foolish, though," she said. "Like many Schools of magic, Entropy is split into trees. In this case, four trees. Misdirection Hex is part of the Hex tree. While it may be the one you can use most harmlessly to your opponent, the others are more damaging." These ones she would not test on the students. It would be too dangerous. "Vulnerability Hex and Affliction Hex both remove a person's resistance to other elements - the former to one target and the latter to a target and anything surrounding it - so any sort of attack of such will be fully damaging.

"Say, you're flame resistant," Flemeth continued, snapping her fingers so a small flame appeared above them. "Whether you or your clothes, it doesn't matter. But with one of these hexes, that resistance goes away." The flame grew, suddenly, hot enough that the students in the front row could feel its heat. "And, then you're simply toast." She snapped her fingers again and the flame disappeared.

"The final hex is the Death Hex," she said. She shrugged her shoulders slightly. "I'm sure you can infer from its name what it's capable of."

Okay. So the Misdirection Hex wasn't really damaging, although other hexes potentially were. There were hexes to remove resistances, and Cinnamon understood that while that in itself wasn't harmful, the lack of resistance in the face of certain attacks were. People and gear that were meant to be fireproof suddenly weren't. It would take someone by surprise, not to mention that their defense wasn't effective anymore.

So, in short: hexes were scary and not to be messed with. Fortunately, it looked like they could wear off, as the hex on the volunteer did. Cinnamon wasn't sure if it was the same for every single kind of hex, though. Should she ask?

She felt a little too shy to ask about it now...

The audience murmured at the mention of the Death Hex, and Cinnamon worried that someone was going to ask for a demonstration. Thankfully, nobody did.

The students seemed to like the Hex tree. That was fine. Flemeth found it an interesting branch of magic to use when she didn't want to try too hard and exert too much physical effort. She also got to see some of her opponents wobble around like idiots, much like the student she had tested the spell on. That always made battles entertaining.

But, they needed to move on.

"Besides Hexes, there are three other branches to Entropy," Flemeth said. "First is Weakness. What it does is enhance weaknesses in your opponent in multiple ways. It can reduce their movement or paralyze them.

"The Disorient tree is used to confuse or startle your opponents. Such abilities like Horror makes a target cower in fear. Many a mage will say it causes them to see their worst fear before them so they are unable to move. Sleep, of course, places a target under a deep sleep. And, Waking Nightmare, the most devastating of these spells, will trap a target in waking nightmare, either stunning them or causing them to hurt themselves or their allies in panic.

"The last is the Drain Life tree. It does what you assume it would do, which is draw the life force out of its target until they are dead."

She paused, listening briefly to the murmurs, before she spoke again. "Of course, there's ways to deflect or remove this. And, some can resist them, if they themselves are physically or mentally strong enough to overpower the spell." Sometimes stopping a magic that messes with your mind was as simple as that - be stronger than the spell.

"And, that's Entropy. What type of magic would you like to learn next?" She wasn't going to use Entropy for more physical demonstrations. It was too dangerous, and she didn't care for killing anyone. Not at the moment.
