The trunk of the tree had a smiley face carved into it. This was the twenty-seventh time Kaito had seen it, not counting the time right after he had carved it there. Back then he had been feeling optimistic. Now he just felt annoyed, and it was almost like the face was taunting him.

Making a face right back at it, the teenager turned and looked out at the rest of the woods. The tree was right at a fork in the path, and he had gone down both branches several times over, only to come back to this exact same spot. Every single time. It was unbelievable! How was it even possible to get this lost in a forest? It wasn't even that big of a forest, according to most of the maps he had seen of the continent.

It was getting dark soon, too.

Groaning, Kaito swung his backpack off and sat down at the base of the tree. One of these paths had to lead to the way out somehow. Was he missing something? Before he bothered to go on his twenty-eighth trip around the woods, he'd better think about what he had seen so far first. A pain in the ass, but maybe this was why everyone treated the place like it was haunted or something.

Kay flicked her flashlight on. Then, she flicked it off. On. Off. On. Off. On. Off. On. Off. On. Off. On. Off. On. Off. On. Off. On. Off. On. Off.

Nope, she was still lost.

Kay sighed and flicked it on again, training it on the pathway she was following. She was told that she was probably going to get lost in Kokiri Forest, but she also thought it would be a fun adventure, so here she was. She was not having a fun adventure, though. She was lost in a forest. At least, she had a flashlight and supplies, which included a really big stash of batteries.

Did it get really dark here at night? It was a good thing she brought her flashlight with her so she'd be able to see.

"Lucky," she murmured to herself. What wasn't going to be lucky was the scolding she'd probably get from Sami.

As she walked, she came to a stop when her flashlight caught sight of someone else. She immediately flicked her flashlight off. Was that really another person? Should she go talk to them? Or should she run?

Okay. Kaito had gone down the left path. It led him back to this tree. He had gone down the right path. Same deal. Over and over again. Even when he took different turns along the way, he always ended up back here. So he was going around in circles, even when he was making sure that he wasn't. There had to be a trick to it and he wasn't going to be able to leave until he figured it out.

Good thing he didn't have a show tonight. Well, he'd be either at home or backstage, preparing for it. So he wouldn't have been anywhere near this place.

Too bad he didn't have a show tonight.

Kaito saw a beam that was obviously from a flashlight, but then it went off. By now, it had gotten dark and he couldn't see who was holding it. His backpack was close to him, so he slipped a hand into one of the pockets. Anyone who was watching him would only notice that he sat up a little straighter against the trunk of the tree.

Then he vanished in a cloudy puff of glow-in-the-dark glitter.

From somewhere else in the forest, an owl hooted. Overhead, the leaves on the tree branches rustled with a breeze.

"You lost, too?" Kaito asked as he appeared beside the girl with the same visual effect.

Wow, without her flashlight on it was hella dark around here. Kay couldn't really see a thing. She glanced upward, and there was no sign of the sky above either. All she could really make out around her was the trees that were closest to her. That meant she couldn't see the person who she had just caught sight of with her light beam and they hopefully couldn't see her either.

She was really hoping that whoever it was wasn't dangerous. Even so, she was running through all the self-defense techniques Sami had taught her back home, just in case she needed them.

All those thoughts went out the window when someone spoke behind her.

"AHHHHH!" Kay screeched, spinning around and swinging her flashlight upward in a quick arc. She felt it connect with something, though she wasn't sure what. She could only barely make the outline in the darkness of a person. All she knew was hit them, and she hit them hard.

And just like that, Kaito took a flashlight uppercut to the chin.

"AHHHHH!" he screamed, not because he was scared, but because the hit had been enough to knock him off-balance. He ended up landing on his back with his backpack cushioning the fall. Or not - all that it did was make his back hurt, too. It took him a moment to shake off his daze and sit up, rubbing a hand over the spot where the flashlight hit him.

"Ow ow ow ow ow!" Crap, was he bleeding? Yeah, his chin was bleeding. She had actually hit him hard enough to make him bleed. "Why the hell did you do that for?!" Kaito did sneak up on her and gave her a fright, so he did deserve it, but still!

...he needed to work on those sudden appearances, if he was going to get clocked by random objects whenever he tried them.

Kay's heartbeat was going super fast as she stared down at the guy she hit. She had clocked him hard enough that he had crashed to the ground, which would have been just enough to let her have a chance to run for it but her feet didn't move forward at all. Instead, she stared at him, dumb-founded.

It was a boy about her age, and he didn't look like some crazed killer. If he had been the one who she saw in her flashlight beam, he had moved hella fast, but he didn't look like someone who was out to get her. And, it was pretty obvious she was strong enough to knock him on his feet. Maybe he wasn't dangerous to her.

Kay flicked her flashlight back on, looking quickly at the spot. It was empty. She turned her flashlight beam back to the boy.

"You snuck up on me, you dweeb!" she retorted. "Has no one taught you manners? If you sneak up on people like that, you should expect a thrashing! Especially if someone's carrying something they could use as a weapon!" A flashlight counted as a weapon in this scenario, definitely.

What had it been that he said earlier? Was she lost? "Yeah, I am lost," she finally answered. She patted her hand over her heart. "Gosh, I feel I've had a heart attack."

Kaito grumbled under his breath. Seriously, she should've looked before she swung that flashlight like a club! What if she had smacked someone who was a hell of a lot more fragile? There were people like that around here, and they'd probably shatter like glass!

Okay, he knew he was at fault here, but still. She should've looked!

Pulling his backpack off, Kaito opened it and pulled out a pack of bandages. He went through a lot of them, although usually he was Kid when the accidents that resulted in him using them happened. Peeling one open, he plastered it over the cut on his chin. That'll have to do for now. Not going to sit around in some haunted woods trying to disinfect it.

"Least it's just me." Kaito zipped up his backpack, swung it back on and stood up. He looked at the girl as he brushed the dirt off his clothes. Now that he was able to get a better look at her, she was actually pretty cute. "I mean, I hear that some really creepy crap happens in this place after dark." And it was dark now, but what he had heard about this forest were probably just rumors.

Right?

Phew, it looked like he was alright. Kay was glad for that because he didn't seem like one of the things in this forest she needed to worry about. And, she highly doubted any humans wishing to do harm upon people would pick such a place to do their evil doings. That must meant they needed to be extra careful about themselves not getting in danger while also hoping someone would happen by.

Nope, she was pretty sure this guy was safe.

Kay watched him take out a bandaid. At least, his cut was going to be alright. If she had caused any real damage to him, she would have felt bad. As it was, she only felt a little bad over it since he was the one who crept up on her in the first place. Though, if he was bleeding from taking damage with a flashlight, then he might even be flimsier than she was.

"Yeah, sorry about that," she said, an apologetic look on her face. "You should probably not be all sneaky when people are expecting those, though. Otherwise you get a flashlight to the chin."

She peered over her shoulder for a moment, making sure they were still alone.

"I wasn't expecting to be stuck here at night, but here I am." She sighed before looking back at the boy and sticking out her free hand. "I'm Kay, by the way."

"Eh. If it wasn't dark, it would've gone better." Or, at least the girl would be less likely to clock him in the face with a flashlight. His timing was just off, that was all. Also, he picked a girl to surprise who happened to hit just as hard as Aoko. Next time, he'd look for that and make sure that his target wasn't freaked out over the surrounding area.

By not being in these woods at night. Or at all.

See, he already figured it out.

The girl introduced herself as Kay and Kaito considered pulling another trick, but after what happened, he decided not to. Yet. "Kaito," he smiled as he shook her hand. "I know people tend to stop and camp wherever they are, but you'd have to be crazy to sleep in a place like this." Some people liked sleeping in forests, sure. But those forests were nice, pretty forests that looked mysterious, yet safe at night. In the dark, the trees here looked like they would grab any campers and chomp them down. How could anyone even think of getting some shut-eye while surrounded by them?

Well, there were some really crazy people out there. Kaito knew that some people thought that he - and his alter-ego - was crazy, but camping out in creepy forests was where he drew the line.

Kaito sounded like he was Japanese, like she was. She was pretty sure she went to primary school with a Kaito before, but she couldn't even remember what he looked like. He had pulled her hair once, though. She remembered that. In retaliation, she had kicked him in the shins.

She didn't know why, but she had a thing for taking revenge on Kaitos. Weird.

"Yeah, camping out that doesn't sound like something I'd like to do," Kay said, looking back around them. It seemed rather peaceful where they were now, but she knew better than to believe it was. It was always when things were quiet that you needed to be the most on your toes. You never knew what sorts of tricks the forest had planned for you, and she was definitely not sleeping here so she was at her most vulnerable.

"I don't even know if staying stationary for long is a good thing," she said with a frown. "It might get ideas." The word idea was quieter than the others, just so the forest couldn't hear her. If it could hear her. She didn't even know, but she wasn't going to risk it.

"Soooo, what do you think we should do?"

Kaito wasn't superstitious, but after experiencing some really crazy crap on this planet - nearly all of which, by the way, wouldn't have happened in his world - he knew that this forest might actually be sentient. Anything could be sentient here. Hell, there was a Pokemon that was pretty much a bunch of gears. Like, just imagine the kind of worlds weird things like that were from!

Picking up a stick off the ground, Kaito plucked off all the branches on it and then twirled it around in his fingers. When he stopped, the stick was now a flashlight, which he turned on.

"Can't sleep and can't stay still, soooo..." Only one thing left. "We just have to find the way out, right?" Kaito wasn't going to admit that he got circled around the same area twenty-seven times. Nope. Kay didn't have to know. It didn't happen! "C'mon, let's go." There was another branch in this path that he hopefully hadn't tried yet, so they might as well go do that. Kaito started heading down that way.

Okay, they had some sort of plan! It wasn't a very good plan, but it was a plan nonetheless, and it was more of a plan than whatever Kay had been thinking when she was wandering around by herself. And, maybe she wouldn't admit to it, but it was kind of relieving to have someone with her. Even if they were a stranger and even if they were both lost, at least she had someone to talk to. Someone to bounce ideas off of to at least try to figure out where to go.

"Lead the way," Kay said, a cheeriness in her voice, as she took off after him. She made sure to point her flashlight in directions he wasn't so they would be able to see more of the area around them. What would be the point in having two flashlights if they were only going to shine them in one spot?

The only noises that followed them were the sounds of their footfalls as they walked the path. Kay still found that an unsettling thing about this place. Forests were supposed to be noisy, even if there was nothing going on. Bugs and birds should be heard. There were even nocturnal ones of each that made sure the noise kept going no matter what time of day it was.

As Kay thought over how odd it was that there wasn't any, she heard an owl hoo. That made her stop.

"What?" She turned and pointed her flashlight behind her. The owl had sounded really close. "Why all of a sudden?"

So here they were, wandering around some creepy forest while shining their flashlights at nearly everything. Kaito found the whole place stupidly quiet. And he couldn't help but feel that there was someone watching them. It was really annoying, but he ignored it for now and tried to focus on finding the way out of here, so he and Kay could go home and never come to this place ever again.

When they heard an owl, he stopped as well and shone his flashlight around. It sounded like it was nearby.

"Don't see it," Kaito said after a while. Was it camouflaged? Normally, he was pretty good at spotting things that were hidden in plain sight, but these woods were kind of throwing him off a little. Sometimes, in the corner of his eye, he thought he saw tree branches reaching for them, but whenever he pointed his flashlight at them, they were perfectly normal and still.

Maybe it was the shadows? With the two of them searching like they were, the moving beams of light could cause an accidental illusion.

Kay was not sure how she felt about the forest suddenly deciding that now was the best time for it to start making noises at them. Whenever she tried to look for the owl she was pretty sure she heard, she couldn't see it. It was possible it was hidden in the branches and leaves, but then she would hear it again, coming from other direction. When she pointed her flashlight that way, there would only be silence.

Their surroundings weren't any better, either. It was like the darkness was trying to close in around them, but when she tried to look at it, it would stop. She hated things trying to catch her unaware. She liked knowing when things wanted to jump her, so she could get right back at them.

Subconsciously, she stepped closer to Kaito for safety. It would be harder to tangle with two teens than it was to tangle with one.

"We need to keep moving," Kay said. There were edges to the forest. Every forest ended somewhere. If they kept going straight, then they were bound to hit one of the edges sooner or later. Hopefully.

"Yeah." Kaito agreed completely. If they kept moving, then they should find the edge of the forest sooner or later, unless they wound up going around in circles. Like he was doing before. It irked him that something that was normally mundane like a forest was seemingly screwing with him. It was just a large patch of trees and bushes! It shouldn't harassing people who got lost in it!

But he still felt like these branches were reaching for them...

"So," he started, staring ahead of them as they walked but keenly aware of what was going on around them. "You got any hobbies?" It sounded like a dumb thing to ask about right now, but Kaito did so for a reason. If these trees were actually sentient and bent on trapping them, then he wanted him and Kay to look like they hadn't noticed anything. Every trick and escape plan he could think of right now worked best when what he was using them against was taken by surprise.
