Calcifer

Calcifer waited patiently some more. It wasn't too hard for him, not being able to help. Back home, he didn't do a whole lot of helping anyways. Mostly, he was just there when Sophie needed to cook or if they had to boil water or something. If not for any of that, Calcifer mostly just sat around, seemingly doing nothing.

Of course, he was the magical power that held the castle together and kept it mobile, so that was probably important or something. A lot of people didn't quite understand that because he wasn't doing any physical labour. And, those were normally the people who weren't used to doing physical labour themselves and liked trying everything they could to get out of it.

Humans were so contradictory sometimes.

Wilson went to do as Sable bid, pouring more water onto the creature. It sighed once more, clearly happy with its new state.

To Calcifer, it kind of just looked like a lump of white fur. It was very hard to make out where its face was, but there were bumps in the fur, indicating possible facial features. Slowly, it started to rise out of the tub.

"Maybe it needs some help drying off?" Calcifer suggested.

There it was, nice and clean! Sable silently beamed at the white, clean state of the creature, even though she still had no idea what it was supposed to be. All she saw was fur. It was white fur, though, with no dirt stuck to it at all.

It was also wet fur, dripping buckets as the creature rose out of the tub. Calcifer suggested that it might need help getting dry, whatever it was. Sable nodded and set the scrubbing tools to the side. "We need towels..." she said, looking around. Her paws had been cleaned off by that last rinse, so she didn't have to worry about picking anything up and getting dirt on it.

And she did spot some towels, just as white as the creature was. Sable went over to them and picked out the largest towel she could find. "Here we go..." The seamstress went back to the creature and looked up at it, then back at the towel. How was she going to do this...?

With all her might - she even made a small grunt - Sable threw the towel up. It unfolded, draping neatly over the creature's back. Oh! She did it! She grabbed one end of the towel and started drying the fur she was able to reach from the side she was on.

Wilson went to dry himself off from the water, grabbing a towel to do so with. It was really lucky he had his own hands. Otherwise, it might have been way harder for him to accomplish if he didn't have hands to help with the task. He would most likely roll around on the towel while it was on the floor.

The creature itself had sat down on the mat that was just sitting outside of the tub, probably so the floor wouldn't get entirely wet from the person who was inside. Of course, the creature was fairly large, so it was still forming a bit of a puddle around the edges of the mat. That would be alright though. There was definitely bathhouse staff that would be able to mop it up once they vacated the room.

Calcifer wondered if, at least for the drying process, he could help.

"Hey, can one of you pull me over?" Calcifer asked. "I can get out of the lantern and turn my heat up." That sounded like a weird thing to say, but it was something he was perfectly capable of doing. It would help speed up the drying off process a lot faster.

What Calcifer said only sounded weird for a moment. He was a fire, after all, so it did make sense that he could turn his own heat up in order to help dry off the creature. Sable went over to him, gripped the wagon's handle in both of her paws and then pulled it over. It wasn't too heavy and she was able to get it fairly close to the creature. Not too close, though - she didn't want any accidents, especially after the bath had gone so well!

"Here you are," she said to Calcifer. "Please be careful as you climb out of your lantern, okay?" The floor wasn't completely wet, but she wouldn't want him to tip his own lantern out of the wagon and end up in a puddle. A puddle wasn't something most people would be concerned about, but Sable didn't want Calcifer to get hurt!

"I'll be careful," Calcifer reassured Sable once she had his wagon closer to the creature. It was easy enough to push his door open from the inside - it had been set that way so Calcifer could get out in case of emergency, and he thought this could probably qualify as an emergency - but he made sure to be extra careful as he pulled himself out.

Calcifer moved at a bit of a crawl to get himself out of the lantern and to the edge of the wagon. He hoped the creature wouldn't try to shake dry. That could have turned disastrous.

Once he was in a good spot, Calcifer took a deep breath. Slowly, he started to rise up, expanding mostly upwards as both his flames and his heat began to grow. Soon enough, the entire room would have been able to feel his warmth, even somewhat.

"Is this helping?" he asked.

Sable was surprised by how tall Calcifer had suddenly grown, voicing a small "oh!" as his flames started reaching towards the ceiling. That was quick! But it was working - the room started to feel warmer. "I think that ought to help a lot," she replied, going back to the creature's side. She grabbed the towel again and continued drying the wall of white fur she was once again facing.

Once she was sure that part was all dry, she moved the towel to a wet patch and started to dry that, too. With everyone working together, they should have this creature completely dry and fluffy very soon. And it should feel even better once it was dry, although they might need to brush out some tangles.

If the creature didn't mind. But it took a bath and it was now getting dry without complaints, so maybe it would like that idea.

Calcifer hummed as he let his fire heat up the room. If they weren't in the bathhouse, it might have caused some alarm to have so much heat in one room. But, that was pretty much a common thing in a place like a bathhouse, because they often had sauna rooms in them or the heat off the hot bath water helped the place warm up.

It was lucky because he wasn't sure how to explain the scene to anyone who came to check on what was happening in the room. It looked kind of silly to him, so it would look kind of silly to the spirits who worked there.

Once Calcifer was sure that his heat could do no more and the creature was practically dry, he shrunk back down to his normal size and crawled back into his lantern, letting the door swing shut behind him. He settled down, tucking his arms and legs in. He felt a lot better in the lantern.

Finally, they had gotten the creature clean and dry.

Sable still wasn't sure what it was supposed to be. All she saw was fluffy white fur, although she could tell where the head and face was. She just... wasn't sure what she was looking at. There was just so much fur!

She set the towel she was carrying down for a moment, gently removing some of the more noticeable tangles in the creature's fur by hand. Once she was satisfied with what she saw, she picked up the wet towel and went to drop it in a basket that contained other wet towels. Then she took a moment to regard the creature again with curiosity.

Whatever it was, it sure looked happier now that it got all that stuff removed from its fur. "Maybe we should tell the staff that we're all done...?" she then asked, turning to look at Calcifer.

Calcifer watched as the drying finished off, and then settled down quietly. He thought they had done a nice job about it. The creature looked quite happy with their work, even. It was kind of content to just sit there and be clean and dry.

What did they do now?

Sable suggested letting the bathhouse staff know. It was probably their job to do what Calcifer, Sable and Wilson did. They had seemed like they didn't know what they were supposed to be doing. Maybe the staff who were on duty today didn't have any ideas about that. But, they should know about cleaning up, right?

Hopefully. If not... Well...

"Let's go find some staff," he said to Sable. "They should know what do to next."

Sable peered out of the room. She could see people lingering not too far away, discussing just what happened to the creature to begin with. From what she could overhear, this wasn't an isolated case. What was going on?

Everyone seemed like they were busy talking. Sable didn't want to interrupt. She wasn't very good at butting into the middle of a conversation, especially with strangers. The hedgehog felt a lump in her throat. All she had to do was go over there and tell them that they were finished giving the creature a bath. But she was finding it difficult to actually do what she was planning to do!

Thankfully, a cat lady noticed her peeking out and approached. "Hey, did you..." she peered in through the doorway. "Oh, yeah... this is embarrassing. Our own guests took care of it already."

"It's okay..." Sable murmured, looking up at her. "We didn't mind." Given the choice to either stand around or help out, she would help out. Wasn't it the right thing to do?

Calcifer waited as Sable went to see if there was anyone to inform about what they did.

He hunkered right down into his lantern, even letting out a little yawn. He was feeling sleepy. Some people didn't think it was possible for him to get sleepy and tired. He wasn't sure why. Sure, he was a fire and not a human, but he was still a physical, sentient being. It was perfectly normal and nature for them to get tired.

In fact, Calcifer was a real fan of sleep. He normally slept until his humans woke him up in the morning. Even now. If Sophie wasn't such an early riser, getting up on Aden's schedule would have been a pain to adjust to.

He heard words being exchanged so he leaned towards the glass to try and get a better look but he was unable to see out the door from where he sat.

"Sable?" he asked. "Any news of what we're going to do now?"

A few more words were exchanged and then the lady left. Sable turned around and walked over to Calcifer, hearing him ask about what they were going to do now. "Someone from the staff told me that she was sorry we had to go out of our way like that, but I didn't mind." Someone needed help, so they helped. It was better than just standing around. It was nice to feel appreciated, though.

"She'll be back in a few minutes... but she also said she'll get a fancy meal prepared for us and our new friend." Sable normally didn't eat much, but she did feel hungry after all that work. The fluffy white creature was probably hungry, too. And Calcifer and Wilson. They could all go eat and relax. It sounded like such a lovely idea right now.

"It's alright," Calcifer agreed. "I liked helping too. I don't get to help others all that much since I'm kind of not very mobile." In fact, in this world he was probably able to do a lot more to help other people than he had been able to back home. Back home, he was often stuck to the castle. Sure, he was able to take his star form and fly, but it was a lot more trying than normal and he wasn't able to really help anyone in that form anyway.

Maybe he could give off some light, but that was about it. He wasn't sure how much use that would be. Flying was nice, but he liked being a fire.

Calcifer waited. He wondered if they were just going to eat here in the bathroom, or if they were going to have to go somewhere else. The question was answered soon enough as someone opened the door and said that they had they had food ready for them in the dining hall. Wilson got up and took a hold of the handle of Calcifer's wagon.

"I guess we go there," Calcifer said to Sable.

It was nice that Calcifer got a chance to help someone, especially since he normally couldn't. He was in a different world now, though. So maybe he would have many more opportunities in the future. Sable hoped so, at least. It just felt good to help others!

They waited for a few minutes, not really talking. Sable didn't mind that at all, since she was used to not talking for long periods of time. Once they were told that they could go to the dining hall, she nodded in agreement to Calcifer's remark. "Let's all go together." She didn't mean just them, but the creature as well.

As the hedgehog carefully stepped out of the room, their new friend moved to follow, but stopped to let Wilson and Calcifer go first.
