"Catch it, Maki!"

"Oof!" Maki caught the ball, trying to keep a hold on it despite just how large it was. Her arms were stretched out wide as she stood on the ground. If this thing had been a lot heavier, she could've been crushed by it. Luckily, it was just some kiddie toy. It was harmless.

Today, she was playing with the kids in the town she lived in.

"I got it~!" she called through the colorful bubble, causing the small humans to cheer in reply. Hah. They were so amused by the simplest of games. But it was part of her image here to play with these kids. Cute, sweet Maki, playing games with the kids, helping adults with random stuff and getting helped in return. In the months she had lived here, she got to know pretty much everyone - their names, their personalities, their likes and dislikes. What kept them going each and every day, and what kept them awake at night.

Not that she would use any of that against them. In Radiant Garden, she wasn't part of the yazuka. She was just the small girl with the big shell hanging off her back, a friend from an ocean far away. It made living here a lot easier when nobody knew who she really was inside.

"Now you catch it!" Maki threw the ball to the next kid, and the game continued.

Here, she was just another resident. The moment anyone tried to fuck things up for her, she was going to stab a bitch.

Black

It felt like it had been forever since Black went to Radiant Garden, which was why he chose it for his stop while biking through the Western Continent. He already drank through all the bottled water he brought with him, and he stopped to restock as much of it as he could. He couldn't carry too much, but he had enough in his backpack for the rest of the day and then some. Until he decided where he really wanted to go.

Who knew, he might decided he was staying here for the evening. He wasn't much of one to make too many plans when he was just wandering. He liked going where the wind took him.

Black walked through the streets of Radiant Garden. Today, he wasn't alone. Back when he dealt with some stuff in Midgar, he picked up two new Pokemon. One of them walked with him right now. Lickilicky was one of the newest members of his team, and he walked next to him, looking at everything with curiosity. He liked bringing his Pokemon to walk with him as much as possible; it was probably way more interesting than being stuck in their Pokeball all day.

He briefly wondered what exactly that was like. He couldn't imagine.

As they walked, something rolled and bumped into Lickilicky's small feet.

"Licky?" he questioned bending over to pick up what looked like a ball. It looked like they were interrupting a kids' game.

The last throw was a little off; the girl it was intended for wasn't able to reach the ball before it went rolling along the street. Some of the other kids went for it, but stopped when they saw a big, strange-looking Pokemon pick it up. Now they weren't sure what to do. Maki supposed that was reasonable - they all knew that Pokemon could be dangerous, although she doubted that was the case here. This Lickilicky was with someone.

Someone she knew, in fact.

"Hey! Black!" The mollusk started waving her arms. "Blaaaaack~!" They had met on the train before. Black was one of the few human kids around here that Maki didn't feel like immediately launching to the moon. He was nice to her and unlike a lot of kids, he wasn't a fucking brat. "Could you and your friend toss that back to us? Pretty please?"

Lickilicky was clearly fascinated by the ball. Black only recently got Lickilicky, so he wasn't sure if the Pokemon was familiar with human communities before they met. Maybe he had never seen a ball like this before, made for children to play with.

When the trainer glanced up, he could see children approached them. They stopped, seemingly wary that there was a Pokemon in their presence. Black could understand that. Children in his own world were way more likely to run up to a Pokemon showing up with a trainer, but this world was a little different. A lot of kid were from worlds were running up to supposed monsters was not the best course of action. Even here in Radiant Garden, people grew used to having heartless around and they weren't creatures children should be approaching.

Before Black could speak, he heard a voice - a familiar one. It took him a moment to spot her. "Hey, Maki!" he called. He looked at Lickilicky who looked at him before throwing the ball back to the kids. They seemed curious now. "He's safe," Black said, reassuringly, to them. "Kind of squishy too."

A couple of the kids came over to investigate him while a few, like the one with the ball, went back to the game. Black circled over to Maki.

"Hey, how you've been?" he asked, his eyes watching the ball as the game resumed.

The ball was returned and the game continued. It soon flew Maki's way again, and she caught it and tossed it back for the next kid to catch. By then, Black had circled around to see her. She stepped backwards so she was closer to him, while letting the kids know that she was - for now, anyway - checking out of the little game they had going on.

"I've been alright," she replied to him, maintaining the cheerful tone of voice that the people of this town knew her to have. "I got some traveling done, and look! Haven't been sat on or eaten!" It might've sounded weird for anyone who was larger than her to say things like that. But at her height, getting sat on was a constant problem because most humans were idiots, while a lot of creatures liked eating smaller creatures. Bigger fish eat smaller fish and all that shit.

In truth, though, she was usually bored, which was pretty much the reason why she spent a lot of time outside of Radiant Garden. "What about you? Meet a lot of new Pokemon?" That was what Trainers did, right? Meet Pokemon. Whether they caught said Pokemon or not really depended on a bunch of things that Maki didn't really care too much about.

While Black's main focus was on Maki, he kept an eye on the game of ball that was going on right next to them, just in case. If the ball came flying their way by accident, neither one of them were going to get hit by it. He would be able to catch it just fine. He hoped so, anyways! All those years of playing ball as a kid needed to come in handy sometime!

Black laughed as Maki pointed out that she hadn't been sat on or eaten yet. He could tell that was probably a win in her books. There were plenty of things in this world that could sit on or eat Black, but he was also big enough to do both of those things to Maki if he so chose to (which, of course, he didn't). That meant anything that could do them to him could definitely do them to her.

"I picked up a few," he said to answer Maki's questions. He looked back over at his Lickilicky, who had attracted some of the kids to him. "That's my Lickilicky. I picked up a Mamoswine along with him not too far back." The story of how he got them was an interesting; rarely did he have Pokemon just invite themselves to him. Normally, he needed to do the tried and true method of battling them to catch them.

"Everything in Radiant Garden been peaceful then?" he asked then. He knew with the Goddess playing her games, not everywhere was always safe, even if it normally was. Radiant Garden wasn't the safest of towns to live in, considering the heartless, but it was still better than some. He'd hate to see that ruined.

Maki glanced at the Lickilicky. So that one was a new Pokemon? She hadn't seen all of Black's Pokemon before and just assumed that if he was walking around with one, then he must've had it for a while. Huh. Well, at least he was making new friends. It was probably good for a Trainer to have a lot of Pokemon he could count on.

Especially with all the shit that happens around here. Dumbass bandits, psychopathic mages, starving monsters, the Goddess getting bored and wanting to see something blow up...

"Peaceful as it can be~" she chimed in reply. On the surface, Radiant Garden was picture perfect. None of the problems the rest of the world faced were visible. In reality, it was the main hive for Heartless. Stupid, pointless bastards who had nothing else to do with their time besides hiding in shadows and sneaking around to attack and troll residents and tourists alike.

So why was she living here? Because she actually liked it here. Fuck those Heartless!

"Are you just dropping by today?" It was kind of nice that people still stopped by this town even with its Heartless problem. Maki would've been stuck hearing people complain about it, otherwise. Lots of businesses here relied on visitors to help keep them afloat.

Black was pleased to hear that everything here was still as peaceful as Radiant Garden could be. Sure, the heartless were a problem but the city handled that problem fairly well and it could definitely be a lot worse here, like people being unable to leave their homes all together because so many heartless were streaming everywhere.

And, he knew clearly whoever unlocked the chest here managed to pull the feat off, otherwise this place wouldn't be here anymore.

That wasn't something Black liked thinking about. It made him mentally shudder.

"I'm just dropping by," he said in reply to Maki's question. "I haven't been here in a while and I like checking in to see what's going on." There was always something new going on in this world, what with all the problems the Goddess threw at them as well as all the new people who came to the world on a regular basis. It made living here rather interesting. It was something to focus on instead of worrying about being dragged from your home world.

Lickilicky came over then, the kids following after them. He seemed rather pleased that he managed to make a train like he did. That made Black smile.

Nothing much was going on here. Barely anything happened here; occasionally, the Heartless swarmed to the point that most people stayed in their homes until they thinned out, but that was almost treated like a thunderstorm. Wait until it passed. Pretty normal shit here. If Maki wanted to see something interesting, she usually had to travel out into the rest of the world to see it.

The most exciting thing that happened recently was the whole thing with the chest, and the next event that would actually make it to everyone's calendars would likely be next year's Struggle Tournament. If they were holding one. It was still a few months away, anyway.

But it was a good thing that nothing much happened here, she guessed. Maki didn't have to worry about leaving and then coming home and discovering that the town was destroyed. That would be annoying.

"Is there anywhere here that you're thinking about checking out?" she asked, watching as Lickilicky came over with his train of children following him. "I can help you get there if you're having trouble reaching it." Maki liked Black enough to not mind tagging along with him. It would break up her day a little, too.

Nothing interesting was going on in Radiant Garden, but that was entirely fine. Sometimes, it was better to keep all the interesting things away from home. And, there was a lot of interesting things that happened in this world. It wasn't that Black was bored of his own world, but he was born there and grown up there. Most of the things that surprised him didn't surprise him or wow him the way things here would have. But this world always had a way of making him feel like he was having his first day here.

It was exciting to live that way. It kept things interesting and moving along.

"Somewhere specific to go...?" Black's expression took on the look as if he was thinking. Lickilicky wobbled from one foot to the next, waiting to see what his trainer said. Black had pretty much come straight here from eating the town and didn't really get a chance to look around. He glanced at his Pokemon, who was still familiarizing himself with being a Pokemon who had a trainer.

Black always wondered what that must have been like. To be a Pokemon who was caught and needed to adjust to its new trainer's lifestyle. Black hoped he didn't make it hard on his Pokemon.

"We can go shopping," he said to Maki. "Maybe grab some ice cream or something." Lickilicky cheered at the sound of that. Black couldn't help but grin; he was pretty sure Lickilicky wasn't sure what ice cream even was yet.

Maki made sure to look and act excited. Shopping was usually a pretty mundane thing, but sometimes, it got interesting. Her current persona would be excited over something like that, and she did want something to do. Shopping it was. "Great idea! I know the marketplace really well by now. If you're looking for something, I'll try to get you to the right shop!"

Like a lot of other markets in this world, there was a little bit of everything here. Vendors from different worlds often set up shop here in order to expand their businesses. Most people didn't have to go very far from home to do their shopping. Nice to know that there were some convenient things about this messed up world.

"The ice cream here's really good. I bet Lickilicky will like it~" Maki added, turning to look up at the Pokemon with a smile. What a silly looking guy. But she did know enough about Pokemon to understand that some of the ones that looked really silly were pretty formidable bastards. Appearances weren't everything.

If they had been, then she would've really been a sweet mollusk. Maki didn't think she could live like that all the time.

They were going to get some ice cream first then. Black was pretty ecstatic about that. He was fourteen years old, and that essentially meant he was technically still a kid. And, what kid didn't like ice cream? He knew this place was famous for a specific type of ice cream that wasn't really found anywhere else in the Goddess' World, and he wanted to try it out. A quick glance at Lickilicky told him that his Pokemon liked the idea of them getting ice cream right away.

Black still didn't know if Lickilicky even knew what they were talking about when they mentioned ice cream, but he was happy his Pokemon was excited. It was probably because Lickilicky figured out that ice cream was food. In their short time together, Black came to realize that Lickilicky liked to eat.

"I heard there's an ice cream stall around here somewhere," he said, looking over at Maki. "Can we go check it out first? We can try some of that."

Then, they could go shopping. Black wasn't always the biggest shopper, but he liked going places that had the sort of things he wasn't likely to find at home. He wasn't interested much in shopping for food or clothing - really, anything that was a necessity - but he sure liked looking at things that would be considered weird or not normal where he was from.

Ice cream, huh? They could do that. "Okay, then!" Maki replied as she swung her shell off her back. "Follow me~" She jumped onto her shell and it flew up on a stream of water. For her, it was easy to control the pressure so she wasn't zipping around town and spraying people by accident. As long as she kept the shell at just the right angle, the only thing getting wet was the street.

By now, the people of Radiant Garden were used to finding trails of water. They dried up within minutes whenever the weather was nice. Which was so damn often it could be considered boring at times.

Staying at a slow speed so Black and Lickilicky could easily keep up with her, Maki waved goodbye to the kids as she passed them. They waved back and then she was on her way. It was a short trip over to the ice cream stall. "Here we are~" she announced as she stopped and hovered in place. There were a few people already there getting ice cream so they would have to wait a bit.

Ice cream it was! Black was pretty stoked that was where they agreed to go first. He knew ice cream wasn't necessarily the most filling of things one could eat - not even the most filling of things one could find here in Radiant Garden - but Black was getting kind of hungry. It was nice outside, and there wasn't anything better to eat in the warmth than ice cream. At least, he thought so. And, he missed getting ice cream all the time in Castelia City.

"Let's go," he said to Lickilicky. He and his Pokemon wished the children farewell before they followed after Maki. Black didn't even need to look up at her. He was capable of following after the water trail she was leaving behind her. Lickilicky walked behind him as they made their way to the ice cream stall.

When Black first saw it, he paused. Maybe he was getting flashbacks of having to wait in line in Castelia for ice cream, only for it to all be out by the time he reached it. It was one of the most disappointing feelings he ever had. But, he shook it off because the line he wasn't long at all. He got into the back before pulling his wallet out of his pocket.

"Let's get one for each of us," he said to his companions. "My treat." Lickilicky seemed quite pleased over that, even if he didn't have any money of his own and Black was always going to be paying for him anyways.

Black had paused for some reason. Maki assumed it was because of some memory about ice cream. She couldn't tell if it was a good or bad memory, but the moment passed and the kid was soon standing in line, offering to buy ice cream for each of them. The mollusk smiled and landed on his shoulder so she didn't have to keep using her shell - that way, she wasn't constantly flooding the ground under their feet with water.

"That's really sweet of you, Black," she chirped as she pulled her shell's strap back on, letting it hang behind her again. "Thank you very much!" Maki was capable of paying for her own stuff, but it was really nice whenever someone she knew offered to buy something for her. Even if it was just ice cream. If everyone was nice like that, then she'd have less people to kill.

She hummed as they waited in line. Once they got their ice cream, she planned to go back to flying on her shell, mostly so she wouldn't drip ice cream on Black's shoulder. Maki liked him enough to do that.
