Carly was willing to go along with his suggestion to simply break the chair leg as opposed to finding something they could use to fish whatever it was inside of it out. Great. He wasn't one of those who cared too much about historical value of items, anyways, though he could see the concern on her face. It was probably because he lived for so long; it was hard to be so concerned about things when you could very well be older than the artifacts in question.

Ronald took the chair leg and went over to the table where anything that might fall could easily drop onto it. Holding the chair leg in both hands, he gave it a few experimental bends, testing it out. Once he was sure he had a handle on how strong it was, he gave it a snap.

It broke about two thirds down, and he left the longer half on the table. It had almost reached the item, but it still needed to be tugged out a bit. He tried, but his fingers were too big. He turned to show it to Carly. She probably had skinnier fingers than he did. She might be able to grab the end and pull it out.

"Try tugging it out," he said, offering her the leg.

Wow, Ronald was strong. He just snapped that leg in two with his bare hands. But it looked like he still wasn't able to reach the object they were trying to get at, and he suggested that Carly give it a try. "Okay," she replied, taking the broken chair leg again. She reached into the hollow space inside, and her fingers just barely hooked on a string of some kind.

She pulled the string out and was greeted by the sight of a small ornate key dangling at the end of the loop.

"Would you look at that!" No need to guess what lock this key was for - they already knew where it was. And that meant that they could now stop shifting through broken furniture and piling up stray chair legs! She had to wonder what that box was keeping that its key was hidden in such a way. Was it really important to someone?

It was a relief to Ronald that it really did have the key they were looking for inside of it. He was hoping for that. If there was anything but it, he would have been exceptionally annoyed. Not because he was that easy to annoy - he liked to believe he was pretty laid back - but because what else could possibly be in there? He didn't need more plot twists.

"Sweet," he said with a grin. "Let's go find out what's in that box."

He went back to the rubble, letting Carly carry the key. He made sure to go up the side of the rubble in a specific way so Carly knew which way to follow him so it was easier for her. He didn't want her to fall backward and hurt herself. He would probably be quick enough to catch her (probably) but he didn't want anything to go wrong.

Because in times like this, sometimes shit went wrong when you least expected it.

Once he landed on the other side, he made sure the box was still there. Then, he went to make sure that Carly got back down, safe and sound.

It was really nice of Ronald to make sure that Carly got back to where they were earlier safely. If he hadn't, she would've taken longer because she had to be careful not to fall. And being careful was never a guarantee. Not for her! If Carly could count the times that she thought everything was fine and then whoops!...

It made her queasy just thinking about it.

Once they arrived back at the box, Carly reached for it and pushed the key into the lock. Turning it, she heard a click. "It looks like we got the right one..." she said, although she couldn't imagine there being any other keys hidden here like this one was. She carefully opened the lid, worried that the hinges might snap because they were so old.

They held. Inside the box, buried in a soft shiny lining that looked like silk, was a book.

Carly reached in and lifted it out, holding it in both hands as if it was fragile. "It's really pretty..." The cover was encrusted with gold and jewels and was probably worth more than everything she owned. Why lock up such a beautiful and expensive book like this? Maybe it was a noble's journal...?

Ronald walked over to where the small box was kept and waited as Carly opened it. It seemed like time moved in slow-mo, but that was probably because he was seriously curious as to what was inside of the box. When she did open it, he was mildly disappointed, but only because he was expecting more than a book.

It sure was a fancy looking book, though. He had to give it that much. He expected it was owned by someone who was rich, because this was the palace and it didn't really matter how nice the royals were, they weren't letting the poor run amok in the palace. It was a nice thought to think royals would let that happen, but it was just that - a thought. They weren't the only people who had a say in what was going on in a palace. If they did anything that other nobles thought was wrong, it meant their rule was in jeopardy.

Oh, did Ronald see shit like that go down before.

"Open it and lets see what it says," he said to Carly. She had the book. It was up to her to take a peek. He didn't think they were invading anyone's privacy; whoever did write in it would have been long dead by now.

The book, thankfully, didn't have its own lock. Carly knew that some journals did, so anyone who wasn't supposed to read it couldn't. If this book had such a thing, then they would've had to find that key as well, and she wouldn't have a clue where to start looking for it. Shuffling a little closer to Ronald so he could see, she cracked the book open, worried that the artifact would literally crack into pieces after staying shut for so long.

It didn't. The pages within didn't even look yellow or brittle. The handwriting was crisp and clear in the lines; from the context, Carly could tell that it was a guy who had owned it. And it wasn't just a journal for him to keep his thoughts in - it looked like he was writing these for his betrothed to read.

"There's a lot of day-to-day stuff about the palace in here..." Carly commented after a few minutes of browsing through the pages. "But then there's something about him having to go to another planet on family business. When he came back after a few weeks, she wasn't anywhere to be found." It continued on, saying that everybody looked, but they couldn't find anything that would lead them to her.

The last entry stated that he was going to hide this for her in a place only she would know, in case she was still alive and had escaped what dire circumstances made her vanish to begin with. What was strange was while the key was clearly hidden, the same couldn't be said for the box the journal was kept in. Maybe he wrote the last page on the kingdom's final day and never had a chance to do what he said he was going to...

Ronald read over Carly's shoulder about the details of this guy's life as he wrote to his beloved. By the end, it was clear she disappeared and he had left the journal for her to find. By the looks of things, she never found it, as that meant he and Carly wouldn't have been able to open it the way they did. If she located it before, she probably would've kept it instead of leaving it here for anyone to find. A tragedy befell the Moon Kingdom, probably roughly in that time. It looked like the star-crossed lovers didn't find each other again.

"That's... sad," Ronald said, a small frown in his face. He wasn't the most romantic person ever, but he liked things better with a happy ending. Who didn't? He'd seen a lot of tragedy in his life, but there was something peculiar about reading about it, as opposed to seeing it first hand. It left a lot to the imagination and you couldn't quite figure out if it was better or worst than you thought it was.

"You think we should take it with us?" he asked. "The researchers would probably like it." He didn't know what they did with things like this, but they always seemed intrigued with the day-to-day activities of a long forgotten and dead culture.

It really was sad. That made Carly feel sad in return - this guy really cared for the woman he was going to marry. And then she disappeared while he was away on a trip... and then whatever happened to the moon happened! It was tragic. These people deserved better than dying how they did and then having their home and culture destroyed and forgotten.

The reporter sighed as she placed the journal back in its box.

"I think we should..." Carly replied as she closed the lid. They could've just brought the journal to the archeologists, but knowing them, they would probably be interested in the box as well. It was a shame that it was she and Ronald who got to read the journal instead of who it was intended for, but at least they could make sure that these two lovers weren't forgotten again.

Making sure the lid was secure, she picked up the box. "Okay! Let's head back to camp." If there were other places to explore, they could do that once this was taken care of.

This felt like a closing to their exploration, but Ronald knew there was so much more for them to look at in this place. The moon kingdom was a lot bigger than someone might have given it credit, particularly because a lot of it was in ruins. But, there was evidence of people living here and that meant there were so many lives who lived through these hallways. There was a lot to learn about them. Even if it turned out sad, like the journal they found.

"Maybe we can coax them into lunch before he go looking around some more," Ronald suggested as he headed back towards the archeologist group. Lunch would be nice. Sometimes, having something to eat before doing a task helped out a lot. He hoped they had good food on them, too. He hadn't thought to bring any with him. He didn't think he was going to be staying this long. But, there was more to search for and he was looking forward to it.

As long as he got his stomach filled first.
