Riki

Riki pushed open the door, sneezing when the dust struck his nose.

Today he was out here, doing some exploring! There were tons of places in the Arid Badlands he could've gone to, but instead of choosing any of those, he picked a certain building that Wes had told him about. Apparently, there used to be Pokemon poachers hiding out in here? And then Wes and Black and Celebi kicked their butts. And they rescued all these Pokemon, including Goodra! It seemed like it had been an eventful day.

No poachers awaited Riki here - just dust and dirt and all the damage that had been caused by the battle. Anything of value was either taken by Wes when he returned here later on, or swiped by looters. Still, Riki headed deeper inside. That battle had taken place months ago! A lot of other things could've happened by then. More bad guys could've moved in, although if that was true, Riki should've heard and smelled them by now. So no new bad guys, then.

Riki stepped into a room and found it filled with empty, open cages. "Hmm..." This must've been where the poachers had kept all the Pokemon before they were set loose. Even though nobody had came here for months, it still smelled of Pokemon. And sadness.

At least those Pokemon were off living better and happier lives now! The Nopon hoped so, at least. Riki left the room to check out the others.

“Hey! Get back here!” Ninten yelled after the small Pokémon that had run off with something of his. The Pokémon, in particular, was a small Piplup, and while its similarity to a penguin was certainly an asset towards him going easy on him, he wasn’t entirely thrilled with the small creature.

Tight in the Piplup’s hands was a small X-transceiver, the one that he had gotten from White to use as a cell phone for the Network. He had been in the midst of preparing a message for Holland and Talho to let them know where he was when the Pokémon had come out of nowhere and had taken it to play with it. Ninten had, of course, taken offense and that resulted in this grand chase that led him all the way out here.

He had never really been to the Arid Badlands, but he had decided that he didn’t really like it. The Piplup had vanished, and in the midst of the chaos, he had wandered into what seemed to be some kind of abandoned facility. He heard footsteps from afar and readied his bat.

This place felt funny to him. There was a lot wrong with this place – the sadness, the despair… the torment. He was getting a headache just from that alone.

“… Hello…?” Ninten cautiously called out.

Riki perked up. There was someone else in here! And why not? It was not only an abandoned building, but it was an abandoned building with the entire front wall gone because a certain Tyranitar had smashed through it. That meant that there wasn't any wall or door to keep people out!

Although he happened to use the side door. Riki had wanted to see that room with the cages first and the door was closer to it than the front. Following the sound of the voice, he soon came across a very familiar face.

"Ninten!" Riki sprang towards him, but was mindful enough to not tackle him. Ninten seemed a little on the fragile side and the Nopon wouldn't want him to break anything again. That was okay - Jack was still a prime target for his tackle greetings! Instead, he danced around the boy, happy to see a friend all the way out here.

...did Holland and Talho know that he was out here? Riki thought that they would be keeping a closer eye on him after what happened in Briggs. Oh well.

"Riki surprised to see Ninten here!" he chirped. "Maybe heard story from Trainer friends too?" It was a great story, full of action and heroism and bad guys getting beaten up! Why else would Ninten be all the way out here in the Badlands? All by himself?

It was Riki! Ninten relaxed as best he could in the atmosphere of this building, tilting his head at Riki’s question and wondering what he was talking about. Story from the trainers…? White hadn’t told him anything interesting lately except for her apparently needing to break up a fight between two of her Pokémon.

“No… What story is this?” he asked, wanting at least some kind of explanation. “I only came here cause a Piplup stole my transceiver phone thingy White gave me! If I lose that thing, she’s gonna kill me!” It was, of course, an exaggeration, but he knew how White could be. She’d be mad.

Ninten tightened his grip on his bat, glancing around. “… So… what is this place? I don’t like the way it feels…” It was pressing into his mental brain, the feelings of this place were affecting him to the point of bringing down his mood. What kind of story did the trainers tell Riki? What happened here? Whatever it was…

… It hadn’t been good.

Ninten wasn't here because of the story, but because a Piplup stole something from him? Something given to him by White. Well, they'd better go retrieve it, then! And then White wouldn't have a reason to yell at Ninten. White was loud when she yelled!

Apparently, Ninten could tell that something happened here. Riki would be happy to explain! "Building used as poacher hideout. Keep Pokemon in cages. Friends Wes and Black drop by, rescue Pokemon, save Goodra! Now bad poachers in cages." Except for one, apparently. Riki had been told that one guy wasn't all that bad and even helped the Trainers get everyone out of this place.

Riki hadn't bothered to go into much detail - the two Trainers had been here, so they could tell the story better than he could. And Ninten had a Piplup to look for and probably only wanted the short version of it, anyway.

A creak came to Riki's ears from some distant part of the building. "Hm? Sound like something opening." Maybe that was the Piplup? Or was there someone else here?

Riki rambled off an explanation, as Ninten turned to consider the area. So, this place had Pokémon in it, and they had been kept in cages? It was nice that Wes and Black had been here, then. They had saved the day, and rescued all those Pokémon. Goodra was nice and safe, too, living with them on the Axolotl. He’d seen Goodra around.

“… So this is where Goodra came from…?” Ninten had ultimately decided that the Dragon-type was safer with them.

But, that was when that creak sounded and Riki and pointed out that it sounded like something opening. Ninten turned to the source as well, immediately suspicious. What if it was the Piplup? Well, then he’d have to stop it, penguin or no. “Let’s go check it out, if it’s that Piplup, I have business with him!”

The words started and the moxie returned to him, he headed off in the direction, tiptoeing to avoid detection, and his bat tight in his hands. But, when he looked around, he didn’t see any Piplup – just a swinging cupboard door.

“… Huh…”

And then they were off, sneaking towards what was hopefully the Piplup. This wasn't really a place for a small Pokemon to play! There were broken things and rusty things and practically anyone who braved the Arid Badlands was able to enter the building with no problem. What if more Pokemon poachers decided to show up?

Carrying his Biter, Riki tiptoed after Ninten, but all they found so far was a swinging cupboard door. Riki pouted. Not only was Piplup not here, but there wasn't anything all too interesting about a cupboard door!

The next sound he heard was a loud crash, followed by things breaking.

"Sound like Lucy in ship kitchen," Riki commented. Ninten would understand what he meant by that. He started tiptoeing that way, even though with such tiny feet, he barely made a sound to begin with. But this was a time for being sneaky! So he was going to be sneaky!

Though it wasn’t Piplup, it seemed they had a visitor. There was crashing and banging going somewhere. Like a bull in a china shop. Riki made a quip, and Ninten couldn’t help but nod at it.

“… Yeah, it is. What do you think it is…?” There were all kinds of thoughts swirling about in his head, which did a bit to alleviate the pain of the bad vibes that this place was giving him. At least it was a distraction – distractions were nice from bad thoughts.

Ninten decided to mimic Riki for the time being, which meant getting into as much of a sneaky mode as he could get as well. If they could get the jump on that Piplup – if that was the Piplup – them they couldn’t get caught.

Together, they inched closer and closer…

But once they got there, it became clear that it wasn’t a Piplup. Penguins were much smaller than whatever that was, so Ninten hesitated for a moment, before whispering to Riki, “… What is that? Because that isn’t a Piplup…”

"It a box." Not quite. Whatever it was, it was hiding under the box, out of sight as it pulled doors off of cabinets and rummaged noisily through their contents. It didn't seem to notice that the two of them were there. Maybe it would be for the best if they kept it that way. Or should they do something about it while they were here?

Riki turned to Ninten and looked up at him.

"Keep sneaky or bash on head?" he asked. They didn't know what this thing was. If they tried attacking it before they figured that out, they might end up in tough fight. And in the meantime, Piplup had even more time to get away from them or even leave the building! So they would have to think over their plan carefully.

As carefully as Riki could bother to. The Nopon was quite tempted to sneak up on the box and bash it - the best of both worlds, with the added bonus of both worlds' downsides! Of course, they were here for Piplup and not this, so if Ninten wanted to just sneak on by...

It seemed to be a box, but both Ninten and Riki knew right away that whatever it was they had found, it was under the box. Ninten narrowed his eyes, and glared out at their adversary, wondering what it was they should do. Riki had suggested two options; it was up to them to figure out what was the safest and yet quickest thing they could do.

They were running out of time, and there was no telling where the Piplup had gone with Ninten’s X-transceiver. But maybe that was why they should be careful. Ninten felt that little tinge in his head, but he wasn’t sure it was solely because of whatever was lurking and waiting in the box.

“… Maybe we should play it safe, and keep sneaky for now,” Ninten suggested, tightening his grip on his bat and looking down at Riki with a determined expression. “If we’re not careful, we could end up getting jumped. Whatever is there might not be alone, and there’s no telling what it’ll do.” If they kept quiet and tried to sneak past, then the Piplup could be found, but he didn’t like not knowing what was in the box.

Sneaky it was, then. Riki nodded. "Ninten follow Heropon," was all he said before he started tiptoeing past the box. It seemed quite preoccupied with ripping things apart, so that should make it easier to sneak past. Then again, if it just happened to notice them and turn around, then it was going to be pretty steamed that they were even here in the first place!

So they just had to be really sneaky, then.

Thankfully, all the noise it was making masked their footsteps. Slow and steady, Riki eventually made his way to the other side of the room and slipped into the next. Here, there were old claw marks on the walls, likely from the Pokemon who used to be here. "Box not hear us from here," he chirped. Unless whatever was hiding under the box had really sharp hearing, but that didn't seem to be the case.

Carefully and on his tiptoes, Ninten followed after Riki, trying his best not to let his bat drag across the floor or to make anything louder than a footstep. It was pretty lucky that the thing in the box, whatever it was, was making enough noise to not notice them, and Ninten thanked his lucky stars. He just wanted to track down the Piplup and get out of this place.

They were able to slip into the next room, and Ninten allowed himself to relax – that is until he noticed the claw marks on the walls. He gulped at the sight, and approached, glancing around the room.

“… This room feels bad, too,” Ninten told Riki, already feeling the pounding of leftover emotion and turmoil. “… I’m glad that Wes and Black were able to do something about this place.” There was nothing that could be done about the emotion left behind, but Ninten would just have to push through it.

Now, where was that Piplup…?

Ninten didn't like this room. Riki had to agree - it smelled funny and his instincts told him that it hadn't been a fun place in the past. He really didn't understand why some humans treated Pokemon badly. They treated other creatures badly at times, too.

Although it wouldn't be fair - for Ninten, or the Trainers they both knew, or their other friends - to say that this behavior was just limited to humans. Other people were prone to doing the exact same thing. There were bad Nopon, too. Riki knew that all too well, after he and his friends prowled Frontier Village looking for Nopon to help. They ended up busting a few bad eggs!

Riki sniffed the air. "Old Pokemon scents. But fresh one, too! Smell like birdie." That had to be Piplup, right? Unless some Flying-type decided to roost in this building for whatever reason. Riki thought that a lot of Pokemon would stay away from this place, even if they were looking for shelter. "Scent went that way," he added, pointing.

On the bright side, Riki seemed to have caught the scent of the elusive Piplup. Perking up a little, he gained a small smile and steeled himself up for a possible confrontation in order to get his X-transceiver back. It was almost a matter of time – Ninten could tell! He was almost excited, in fact.

“Great! Hopefully, it’s the same Piplup,” Ninten hoped aloud and began to look around. If they were lucky, maybe they’ll…

… There! There was some kind of movement up there. Ninten peered further ahead, thinking he had sseen some kind of movement happening further in the next room. He tried to sense what kind of being could have made the sound, but was surprised by the underlying feeling of danger lurking nearby. The thought caused him to shiver just a little, but he wasn’t about to let that stop him.

If he didn’t get that X-transceiver back, he’ll be in a lot of trouble. Not only was it from White, it was to make sure he had a quick means to call everyone else on the Network, too. Ever since that fiasco in Briggs… Well, it seemed everyone was wary about him being alone for too long.

They followed after the scent, quickly finding its source in the next room. Movement, along with a quick flash of blue... that had to be it, right? Riki couldn't quite see it around the old and worn out furniture. This place was a mess, either because poachers weren't the neatest of people or because other critters dropped in to poke around earlier.

But there was something here and unlike the critter from earlier, this one might just be that Piplup they were looking for!

Riki studied the layout of the room for a moment before he turned to Ninten. "If Riki sneaky to other end and be noisy, scare maybe-Piplup to Ninten?" And then Ninten could grab it and get the thing it had stolen from him! As long as it really was Piplup this time. There was always a chance that it wasn't Piplup and Riki would just tick it off, but he was prepared to jump to Ninten's aid if things turned out that way!
